French composer Cécile Chaminade composed over four hundred works in the shadows of her contemporaries Brahms and Saint-Saëns, yet her music was so popular that “Chaminade Clubs” sprang up in the United States during her lifetime. Debussy’s early trio, also overtly Romantic, is offered as a companion work, with both trios now increasingly heard in concert halls around the world.

Elim Chan conducts the Symphony in a stunning quartet of works that delve into the great unknown. In Nänie, Brahms memorializes a beloved friend with a poignant choral funeral song, transforming sorrowful resignation into humble gratitude. Renaud Capuçon regales us with the lustrous melodies, vibrant textures, and glittering pyrotechnics of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Arvo Pärt’s shimmering a cappella Magnificat exemplifies the tintinnabuli style, which the composer invented and named after the bell-like resonance produced by a triad. John Adams’s Doctor Atomic Symphony, a condensed instrumental version of his 2005 opera, cloaks Nuclear Age anxiety in dark orchestral splendor.

Nature, itself rich in sound, has always found its way into music – as onomatopoeic imitations of thunder, the lapping of water, or birdsong, but also as an expression of inner "feeling" in the face of its sublime beauty, power, and menace. In the grand opening concert, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and Music Director Daniel Hope dedicate themselves to the work that stands out among musical depictions of nature like the highest mountain peak: Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, "Pastoral ." Beethoven masterfully gives expression to this inner experience of nature without merely "painting" it in sound, even when he has the nightingale, quail, and cuckoo imitated.

If Mahler’s first three world-encapsulating symphonies come from an adult’s point of view, his fourth wonders how a child’s perspective might be different. But the childhood dreams Mahler weaves are not all naïve. Though we eventually arrive at Mahler’s childlike vision of heaven – In Das himmlische Leben, the part he composed first – menace and terror are present too.

Anton Bruckner dismissed his Symphony in F minor as a mere “student work”. Yet it is far more than that. The first symphony he completed, it reveals a composer setting out with extraordinary ambition – yet it was never performed during his lifetime. For conductor Simone Young, it testifies to Bruckner’s hope of establishing himself as one of the great symphonists of the 19th century: “It promises that perseverance and dedication to one’s calling will ultimately prevail.” This will be the symphony’s first performance by the BRSO. The concert will open with Bach’s Ricercar a 6 in Anton Webern’s colourful orchestral arrangement. In between the two works will be one of the great classics of the repertoire, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor – performed by Augustin Hadelich, whose intensity and sensitivity have established him as one of the outstanding violinists of our time.

And you'll never forget the night Kelly Hall-Tompkins played this piece in Nashville. It’s a work rooted in swing, blues, and the American fiddle tradition that sounds like nothing else. Apart from its vivid, romantic melodies, what makes Felix Mendelssohn’s Overture to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” a remarkable work is the composer was just 17 and a half years old when he wrote it, making it the most youthful work in the orchestral repertoire that’s regularly heard today. Arnold Schoenberg and Ludwig van Beethoven, conversely, both were 32 and at turning points in their development when they made their contributions to this program. Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 for just 15 musicians not only was his first effort for chamber orchestra, it also came at a pivotal stage in his transition from late-Romantic to atonal music. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 – bold and energetic with touches of humor – was one of his final pieces in a purely classical style. Though the optimistic and innovative work has hints of Haydn and Mozart, it also foreshadows the Beethoven yet to come.

Sol Gabetta, among the most eloquent of all advocates for Felix Mendelssohn’s cello works, devotes the first half of her recital with Kristian Bezuidenhout to music composed in the mid-1800s. Robert Schumann stipulated that his poetic Fantasiestücke, conceived for clarinet, could also be played on the cello, thereby adding three engrossing pieces to the instrument’s Romantic repertoire. This season, our Berliner Philharmoniker Ensembles series is dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven; 2027 marks the 200th anniversary of his death. Beethoven’s “Große Fuge” is a work of astonishing modernity and expressive power – qualities that many of his contemporaries found bewildering. Yet the work left a profound impression on the young Felix Mendelssohn: shortly after Beethoven’s death, the 18-year-old composed his Opus 13, in which he repeatedly alludes to the music of his great predecessor, including the Große Fuge. The programme opens with Beethoven in a lighter mood – with the Serenade in D major and the Duet with Two Obligato Eyeglasses.

Mendelssohn then unfolded the legend of La Belle Mélusine , a fairy-tale overture with melodious waves. Ravel, with his Menuet antique , revived the grace of a bygone era, while Debussy, in Nuages (from the Nocturnes ), suspended the sky in its luminous grays. The renowned Dover Quartet, named by BBC Music Magazine as one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years, makes its first appearance of the season on this two-work program, which includes Mendelssohn’s last chamber music work—the passionate String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 80, which the composer wrote while consumed with grief over the sudden loss of his beloved sister Fanny and just two months before his own sudden death at the age of 38. The Dover also plays the less-well-known but also powerful String Quartet No. 4 by the 20th-century Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, who saw her reputation grow after World War II. Keen-eyed observers will notice a common thread running through this summer’s program. Four composers feature throughout: Haydn, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, and Jon Deak. Together, they paint a broad, if not comprehensive, history of classical music. Josef Haydn (1732 – 1809), widely acknowledged as the inventor of both the symphony and the string quartet, codified much of the classical era. Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847) was a true romantic and wore his heart on his sleeve. Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 – 1975) typified the complexities and contradictions of the 20th Century, his music touching upon emotions like irony or despair. Finally, Jon Deak (b. 1943), our Composer-in-Residence, has, in his unique and very 21st Century manner, blurred the line between music and theater.
