Italy has always been a place of longing. For centuries, the country and its ancient cultural treasures have served as a source of inspiration for poets and thinkers. Artists and composers - mostly young men from good families - traditionally set off for the south in their youth and brought home groundbreaking ideas that constantly renewed local art. Georg Friedrich Handel's cantata "Il Delirio amoroso" was written at the beginning of his study trip in Rome in 1707, but the 22-year-old could not get enough of Italy - his trip lasted an incredible four years! Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy stopped off in the same cities more than a century later: Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples, among others, inspired him to write his "Italian" symphony. It exudes a light, southern charm and conjures up images of his journey.

Mozart's only clarinet concerto is one of his late works and is always associated with his enthusiasm for the warm sound of the clarinet and its adaptability. He composed the concerto for his friend Anton Stadler, through whom he was well informed about the possibilities and peculiarities of the instrument. The melodies cover the entire possible sound spectrum, even in the lower registers. To this day, it is a calling card and one of the highlights in the repertoire of clarinet literature.

Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” orchestrated by Ravel, follows, transforming the solo piano work into a vibrant orchestral showcase. Mussorgsky’s composition, inspired by drawings and designs by Viktor Hartmann, transports listeners to an art exhibition, culminating in the majestic “Great Gate of Kiev.” This concert weaves together American, German, and Russian music with a French flair, offering a rich and diverse musical experience.

Inspired by seeing the ruins and moors of Scotland, and especially Mary Queen of Scots’s Holyrood Castle on a walking tour, Mendelssohn created his aptly named Third Symphony. Its pages are filled with both dark, meditative strains, as well as lively and spirited passages, but its emotional heart beats in the beautiful, stately Adagio. Our principal winds gather for the world premiere of a concerto commissioned for them by the DSO from one of the most sought-after American composers, Sean Shepherd, praised for possessing “a fantastic gift for orchestral color.” (The New York Times)

Pianist Christopher Guzman enjoys an international performing career that showcases a broad range of styles from the Baroque era to the avant-garde. Since winning top prizes in international competitions such as the Walter M. Naumburg Competition, the Seoul International Music Competition, and the Isang Yun Competition, Guzman has performed across Europe, North and South America, and Asia. As a result of winning the top prize at the Concours International de Piano d’Orléans in France, he has toured that country extensively, giving performances and teaching master classes. When she was 12, she gave a full recital, broadcast on Russian television, which caught the attention of Mikhail Pletnev and later became his protégée at Central Special Music School.

The connection between Niels W. Gade, who became one of the most significant, if not powerful, composers in Denmark in the 19th century, and the fine Mendelssohn family in Germany is important. It was Felix Mendelssohn who premiered Gade's first symphony in Leipzig; and then Gade also became part of the very fertile environment of the city there. Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel could not, as the time (and both father and brother) demanded, be a professional composer and musician – for her, music was simply "an extra piece of jewelery she could wear". But she both played and composed and was highly regarded; also by her brother, who for her 25th birthday composed Psalm 115 as a gift. Gade's probably best-loved work, Morgensang fra Elverskud, and the gift from her brother are respectively before and after her own cantata Lobgesang, which she composed a year after giving birth to her son, Sebastian. It is a work that has references to JS Bach, whose importance was enormous, and which the two Mendelssohn siblings

Felix showed exceptional talent as both a pianist and composer at a very young age. He gave his first public appearance as a soloist for Dussek’s “Military” Concerto at the age of nine. By the age of twelve, he was taken to give a performance of music by Bach and Mozart for the famed poet Goethe, with whom he developed a lasting friendship. Indeed, it is said that the third movement Scherzo of Mendelssohn’s String Octet in E-flat Major, was inspired by Goethe’s poem, “Walpurgis Night’s Dream”. Felix continued to develop as a composer in his youth under the tutelage of Carl Frederich Zelter.  He wrote five operas and eleven symphonies, among other works, before reaching adulthood.

The foyer is only there for the break - but why? This time we are daring to do something special: we are transforming the foyer with its cool atmosphere and also the music hall of our orchestra's own venue into a veritable exhibition hall to bring music and art lovers together. Nine large-format originals by the Nuremberg artist Manfred Hürlimann will be exhibited in the foyer of the music hall and the pictures will be in direct contact with the music. For the visitors, the dance-like sounds of the piano trio from the Romantic and Modern periods meet the power of Hürlimann's pictures of the classical muses of antiquity. In his three concert parts, both worlds transform the foyer and the music hall into a space that you have definitely never seen or experienced before.

The Israel Philharmonic and Lahav Shani return to the desert to present this incredible program featuring two symphonies by two beloved composers. Mendelssohn composed the Scottish Symphony after an extensive tour of Scotland with his friend Karl Klingemann. Upon viewing the ruins of Queen Mary’s castle, he wrote, “I think I have found there the beginning of my ‘Scottish’ Symphony.” Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 came on the heels of an intense bout of depression, and its journey to a triumphant finale is an excellent example of the symphonic trajectory per aspera ad astra, “through struggle to the stars.”

Formed in 1994 by Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff, along with Hanna Weinmeister and Elisabeth Kufferath, the ensemble has become one of the most sought-after quartets of its generation. The “poetic, charismatic and virtuosic” (Sunday Telegraph) Elias Quartet illuminates the final string quartets of three masters of the genre. Haydn’s unfinished D Minor Quartet conveys the composer’s power and ingenuity at his advanced age; Britten’s ephemeral, distinctive Quartet No. 3 contains a multitude of colors and contrasts; and Mendelssohn’s F Minor Quartet exudes anguish and poetic melancholy, having been written soon after the death of his sister Fanny and just two months before his own passing.
