Mozart never ceases to amaze! Alongside the famous Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the OM’s string players will perform a manuscript that was newly rediscovered in 2024. Prior to Mozart, Maddalena Sirmen was the first woman to publish string quartets. Fanny Mendelssohn followed in her footsteps with a magnificent quartet.

The first half of this program presents works by the husband-and-wife team of Robert  and Clara Schumann presented side-by-side. Clara’s “Three Romances” for violin have  been re-arranged for orchestral accompaniment by yours truly, and will be performed by Sedona Symphony’s own concertmaster, Sarah Schreffler. For Robert Schumann’s  cello concerto, we’ve got the great young cellist Gabriel Martins joining us — who, as  luck would have it, has a strong Sedona connection!

We end our anniversary celebration as we began: In the bright surroundings of Mogens Dahl Concert Hall and in the company of good music friends. Trio con Brio Copenhagen, together with Andreas Brantelid on cello, has put together a varied and festive program with a cello extravaganza and Mendelssohn's dramatic piano trio in C minor as the end of a four-day music festival.

Shapiro’s Zoomies! is a playful and energetic new work inspired by the joyful, unpredictable bursts of energy we love in our canine companions.  The spotlight turns to celebrated violinist Tim Fain for the world premiere of Shapiro’s Violin Concerto: At the Shore of the Sea. Lyrical and expansive, this evocative work reflects the meeting point between land and water expressed through Fain’s breathtaking virtuosity. Anchoring the program is Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 11, a brilliant and passionate work composed when Mendelssohn was just 15. The program begins with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture, a richly atmospheric tone poem inspired by the rugged beauty of Scotland’s coastline.

In its program, the Amatis Trio follows in the footsteps of Voltaire's Candide, who discovers the complexity of human existence on his travels. Mozart's K. 502 reflects the initial lightness of the literary masterpiece, while subtle harmonic shifts already hint at deeper complexities beneath the surface. The blend of struggle and spiritual triumph in Mendelssohn's Second Piano Trio seems like a metaphor for Candide's path to resilience and enlightenment. Liszt's Tristia, in turn, moves the listener to reflect on their own search for fulfillment in an imperfect world.

An evening that invokes the spirit of Romanticism: the overture to »Der Freischütz« introduces a key work from the era, whose magic spell was cast early in the Dresden career of Carl Maria von Weber. Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor combines poetic expression with formal clarity. First performed in Dresden in December 1845, the work sees the piano and orchestra enter into a lively dialogue. The programme concludes with Mendelssohn’s »Scottish« symphony, an atmospheric piece permeated by a sense of vastness, melancholy and hymn-like power. Drawing inspiration from a visit to Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace in 1829, the young composer did not complete the symphony until twelve years later.

Beethoven's piano sonatas are one of the absolute monuments, not only in piano literature, but in classical music as a whole. At the concert in Mogens Dahl Concert Hall, Fujita performs Beethoven's first piano sonata, where he still stands on the shoulders of Haydn and Mozart, but heralds what is to come.

The celebrated Yorkshire pianist, Sarah Beth Briggs, makes her fourth visit to the series with another festive programme of simple and sparkling pieces. She begins with Scarlatti’s ‘Pastorale’ sonata, whose melody comes from an old Neapolitan Christmas song, and four of Mendelssohn’s charming song-like Christmas pieces. Debussy’s famous Suite looks back to the courtly dances of the French Baroque and includes the stunning Clair de Lune. Tchaikovsky portrays a jovial Troika ride in November and the pure joy of Christmas, before Sarah’s programme ends with one of Mendelssohn’s finest piano works: 17 variations, full of energy and passion.

Many musicians, composers, authors and academics have undertaken similar journeys in search of a creative home. One such figure is the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, whose much-loved Ninth Symphony From the New World was written during his time as a professor of composition in the US. In this symphony, Dvořák allows the musical roots of his beloved Bohemia to meet the sounds of Native American traditions.

We are absolutely delighted to perform for you the world première of a new composition by Dominic McGonigal — ‘Sunset at Sea’. Dominic’s work has been described as having “great textures and a perfect sense of spacing and pacing” and his ‘Ave Maris Stella Takes Flight’ recently won the Palimpsest Competition at Canterbury Cathedral.

After training as a chorister, Dominic read music at King’s College, Cambridge where he sang bass in King’s Chapel Choir. He found his voice as a composer with his 'Missa Et Incarnatus Est', a large work for 8-part choir, soloists and small orchestra. These days he combines a career in the music business with performing and conducting, including appointments as musical director of COMA Voices, Stoneleigh Choral Society, the Church of St Anselm & St Cecilia in Holborn, Opera Spezzata, EJMS Big Band and St Giles Consort …. and as for this piece, you’ll just have to come and hear it for yourself.

As one of the most original and prolific composers of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten left behind a particularly extensive and rich oeuvre. In 1962/63, he composed a "Symphony for Cello and Orchestra" for Mstislav Rostropovich, distinguished by the equal treatment of solo and tutti, which unfold in virtuoso interplay. Britain, in this case Scotland, became a source of inspiration for the young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, whose Scottish Symphony  grew out of a lasting travel experience in the Nordic landscape and culture and remains one of his major works. Highly Romantic scenery is brought to life, carried by orchestral sounds rich in form and color.

Nothing lifts the spirits quite like the opening of Mendelssohn’s symphony, which bursts into life with an irrepressible energy that could lift you off your feet. The composer once referred to it as ‘blue sky in A major’ and these postcards in sound from an epic 10-month foreign tour seem drenched in Mediterranean sunshine. Prokofiev’s concerto, written on the cusp of his resettlement in the Soviet Union, melds exquisite surface beauty with dark foreboding in his gripping, emotionally-charged concerto, performed by Chloë Hanslip. And to open, Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, inspired by a performance of a Haydn string quartet.
