Friendship and common bonds of artistic curiosity and empathy unite the outstandingly fine players of Trio Zadig. The Paris-based ensemble, who recently received a coveted five-star review from Diapason magazine for its Mendelssohn Legacy album, opens with an impassioned miniature by Lili Boulanger before traversing two mighty four-movement works from the 1840s, Robert Schumann’s intensely romantic Piano Trio No. 1 and Felix Mendelssohn’s dramatic Piano Trio in C minor.

The program opened with an unexpected Vivaldi: his Concerto for Two Cellos RV 531 , reimagined for cello (Cyrille Tricoire De Haro) and bassoon (Rodolphe Bernard). A rare dialogue between two instruments, between Baroque virtuosity and the complicity of the soloists. Mendelssohn then unfolded the legend of La Belle Mélusine , a fairy-tale overture with melodious waves. Ravel, with his Menuet antique , revived the grace of a bygone era, while Debussy, in Nuages ​​(from the Nocturnes ), suspended the sky in its luminous grays. As a grand finale, Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony burst forth in vibrant fanfares and majestic dances. A night of stars, breaths, and strings.

Jordi Savall, the winner of the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize 2026, has made a substantial contribution to shedding new light on repertoire from the Classical and Romantic periods with his magnificent original-sound orchestra Le Concert des Nations. His intensely trenchant and sharply focused interpretations have produced incredible performances of symphonic works by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Bruckner which can hardly be surpassed. Following the homage to Jordi Savall organised by the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation during the season 2025/26, the visionary conductor who is renowned for his meticulous approach will be presenting an evening of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy at the Musikfest Berlin featuring the “Scottish” and “Italian” symphonies alongside his overture The Hebrides.

The renowned Dover Quartet, named by BBC Music Magazine as one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years, makes its first appearance of the season on this two-work program, which includes Mendelssohn’s last chamber music work—the passionate String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 80, which the composer wrote while consumed with grief over the sudden loss of his beloved sister Fanny and just two months before his own sudden death at the age of 38. The Dover also plays the less-well-known but also powerful String Quartet No. 4 by the 20th-century Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, who saw her reputation grow after World War II. The quartet is at once forward-looking (a stance Bacewicz was firmly dedicated to) and folkloristic.

Keen-eyed observers will notice a common thread running through this summer’s program. Four composers feature throughout: Haydn, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, and Jon Deak. Together, they paint a broad, if not comprehensive, history of classical music. Josef Haydn (1732 – 1809), widely acknowledged as the inventor of both the symphony and the string quartet, codified much of the classical era. Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847) was a true romantic and wore his heart on his sleeve. Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 – 1975) typified the complexities and contradictions of the 20th Century, his music touching upon emotions like irony or despair. Finally, Jon Deak (b. 1943), our Composer-in-Residence, has, in his unique and very 21st Century manner, blurred the line between music and theater.

The concert begins with Mozart’s Trio in E major, a graceful and lyrical work highlighting his gift for chamber music. From there, the program moves to the Sonata for Violin and Piano by Maurice Ravel, the great French composer of the early 20th century, whose music shimmers with color and atmosphere.

The Chiaroscuro Quartet is named for the Italian term for light and shade in art, an apt description of their refined phrasing and ability to illuminate familiar works with their subtle period-instrument tones. The ensemble’s recording of Mendelssohn’s Op. 13 prompted the Observer to conclude that its ‘unadorned sound is a shock to the ears of the best, most arresting kind’. It begins this morning with the intricate musical argument of Beethoven’s final string quartet, considered by the composer Robert Simpson to contain ‘the most sensitively coloured quartet writing in existence’.

Full focus on the music: Every year, several members of the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra travel to Italy, more precisely to the picturesque little town of Montepulciano, not far from Siena. There, surrounded by the sun-drenched Tuscan landscape, is the Academy of Music and Performing Arts, where the musicians can intensively hone selected works that they will present to the Duisburg audience upon their return from the south. Fittingly, this time's program includes Brahms's cheerful String Quintet No. 2, which he composed during his summer vacation in Bad Ischl. This will be accompanied by Mendelssohn Bartholdy's String Quintet No. 1, composed in the spring of 1826, when he was 17 years old.

At the age of 22, Richard Strauss traveled to Rome and Naples. He subsequently captured his impressions in a composition: "From Italy." He called this work a "symphonic fantasy"—it is no longer a symphony (despite its four movements), but it is not yet a symphonic poem either. The third movement, "On the Beach of Sorrento," unfolds a fascinating, almost impressionistic soundscape, unusual for Strauss. The composer spoke of a "mood picture," an interweaving of natural sounds (wind, water, birdcalls) with his own feelings.

After opening the season with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 7, Chief Conductor Marcus Bosch concludes the Philharmonic Concert series with the composer's Symphony No. 9 – and it's time to say goodbye. Composed in Toblach and New York, this large-scale symphony is Mahler's last completed work. The then New York Chief Conductor looks back with nostalgia, bids farewell, and seems to capitulate with his visions. The result was an impressive and bold sonic edifice, with which he builds a world using every means at his disposal – ultimately crossing the threshold to modernity.

Few works begin as majestically as Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto. Pianist Alexander Melnikov is able to unleash his highly emotional virtuosity right from the start. The most beautiful melodies and subtle nuances follow on the path to the thrilling finale. Felix Mendelssohn's overture "Ruy Blas" was also once described as "brilliantly chivalrous," opening the program with solemn wind sounds and stormy vehemence. The evening then embarks on a grand journey with Mendelssohn's atmospheric "Scottish Symphony." The evening will be conducted by the celebrated Maxim Emelyanychev.

Among Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's instrumental concertos, his Violin Concerto has held a particularly high status since its composition and premiere in the mid-1840s. As a work of great melodic qualities, harmonic finesse, and rhythmic intensity, it has not been without reason that it has garnered much admiration. Maurice Ravel's ballet music for Daphnis et Chloé , composed and premiered for the Ballets Russes in 1912 , is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of French Impressionism, featuring floating sounds and rich color nuances, as well as a wordless chorus. A story from Greek mythology is impressively relived with and through music.

Hallé Choral Director, Matthew Hamilton, takes the helm for this spectacular season finale. A true showstopper, Mendelssohn’s Elijah captures the full spectrum of humanity’s struggles and triumphs, bringing the powerful story of the prophet Elijah to life through music. For this masterpiece, Sheffield’s resident orchestra and chorus will be joined by a star-studded cast of soloists who will weave this rich tapestry of sound, blending rousing choruses, lyrical arias, complex choral fugues and vivid orchestrations, ending with a triumphant “Amen”.

A sextet? A chamber concerto, rather, which Felix Mendelssohn completed in about ten days, in the spring of 1824 – he was only fifteen years old. The music flows like pure water, the general tone, both light and virtuoso, draws an evanescent Andante, escaped from the generous muse of an adolescent who would say: "I would gladly exchange my virtues for the sins of Mozart." Clarity, transparency, generosity are also the qualities of the third of Dvořák's string quintets, breathing far from his native Bohemia, the fresh air of the Midwest, where the composer was staying at the time: pure enchantment.

Felix Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" combines feather-light ghost dances and sparkling gaiety. The music, composed in 1843, is arguably the most beautiful musical setting of Shakespeare's comedy of the same name. In it, young people lose themselves in a fairy world and experience turbulent emotional turmoil. 150 years earlier, the British composer Henry Purcell composed his equally heartwarming stage work "The Fairy Queen" on the same subject. Marie Jacquot, the future WDR chief conductor, also leads the musical mythical creatures of Norwegian conductor Kristine Tjøgersen through the enchanted summer night forest.

Vintage baroque meets pure rock in this spirited double bill. Because when Vilde Frang and Kammerorchester Basel tackle Bach together, you know sparks will fly. The Norwegian string queen chose not only a violin concerto but also a harpsichord concerto, massaged into string music. And then there are Mendelssohn's string symphonies, brimming with youthful exuberance, and the Holberg Suite, in which Grieg proves that the spirit of Bach lingers even in the Far North.

Felix Mendelssohn filled his magnificent Second Symphony with festive fanfares, roaring orchestral cascades, and atmospheric choirs to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press. The first thing Gutenberg printed with his revolutionary invention was the Bible, and there Mendelssohn found verses that praise both God and enlightenment. When Mendelssohn’s cantata symphony is performed in Berwaldhallen, the Swedish Radio Choir will be joined by the Västerås Sinfonietta and soloists and conductor Simon Crawford-Phillips.

Experience the artistry of Sir András Schiff in his dual role as pianist and conductor. One of today’s foremost interpreters of Bach and Mozart, he leads from the keyboard in a sunny concerto by each. He then takes the podium for Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony, a piece inspired by the composer’s travels in the dramatic landscape of the Scottish Highlands.

Brahms’s magnificent First Symphony was many years in the making. The wait was worth it – it’s a 45-minute journey through all the poetry and power an orchestra can conjure.
