The Leonkoro Quartet, founded in Berlin in 2019, is framed by brothers Jonathan and Lukas Schwarz on first violin and cello, while the middle voices are formed by Amelie Wallner on second violin and Mayu Konoe on viola. The Israel Philharmonic and Lahav Shani return to the desert to present this incredible program featuring two symphonies by two beloved composers. Mendelssohn composed the Scottish Symphony after an extensive tour of Scotland with his friend Karl Klingemann. Upon viewing the ruins of Queen Mary’s castle, he wrote, “I think I have found there the beginning of my ‘Scottish’ Symphony.” Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 came on the heels of an intense bout of depression, and its journey to a triumphant finale is an excellent example of the symphonic trajectory per aspera ad astra, “through struggle to the stars.”

Formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, they have studied with the Alban Berg quartet in Cologne and were the resident String Quartet at Sheffield’s Music in the Round as part of Ensemble 360 from 2005 to 2009. They are currently the ensemble in residence at the RNCM, where they continue to teach and perform.

Everyone knows the tale of Felix Mendelssohn’s trip to the Hebrides, and the sonic enchantment that emerged from that (slightly choppy) boat trip to Fingal’s Cave. What more can we say? These isles sometimes have that effect on visitors. Jean Sibelius ran into fogbanks as his steamer took him to Britain, and you can hear them swirling around the expansive Finnish landscape of his sunlit Third Symphony. And Magnus Lindberg’s radiant First Violin Concerto was hailed as an instant classic after its premiere in 2006. Two of the most dynamic young stars in Finnish music – violinist Tami Pohjola and conductor Taavi Oramo – bring a special freshness and energy to music filled with sea air and northern light.

Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann preceded Amy Beach, paving the way for the tonal worlds of the 20th Century Romantics (like Rachmaninoff and Beach). Sergei Rachmaninoff and Amy Beach were contemporaries, and I find that their music pairs together well. Making his debut with the PS Phil, Sir Antonio Pappano leads the London Symphony through this thrilling concert featuring Mahler’s expansive Titan Symphony. In another PS Phil debut, Janine Jansen brings Mendelssohn’s cherished violin concerto to life. This program also features the rarely heard Sinfonia No. 5, Visions by George Walker, composed in 2016 in response to the 2015 shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC.

Through the centuries, the trio ensemble structure has created opportunities for compositional ingenuity through its enormous musical range and variety of texture and color. These qualities come through in Haydn’s greatly admired Trio in E Major and the inspiring trios of Shostakovich and Mendelssohn in a program curated for the audiences at Wolf Trap and performed by three of chamber music’s greatest virtuosos.

Sir Stephen Hough returns to Burlington for a doubleheader of two composers’ first piano concertos. Mendelssohn’s propulsive work is partnered with the East Coast premiere of Hough’s The World of Yesterday, informed by musical sketches he composed for a WWII-era film score. A symphonic poem by Polish composer Wojciech Kilar, whose movie scores include Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Portrait of a Lady, and English composer Anna Clyne’s tempestuous piece round out this concert.

Nikolay Lugansky was born in 1972 in Moscow. He was studying at Central Music School at Moscow Conservatory under Tatiana Kestner and later on with such professors as Tatiana Nikolayeva and Sergey Dorensky. He continued his postgraduate education under Dorensky supervision. The initial stage of his career as the solo pianist brought him the title of the laureate of the I All-Union competition of young musicians in Tbilisi (1988), VIII International competition of J.S. Bach in Leipzig (1988), All-Union competition of S.V. Rachmaninoff in Moscow (1990), International summer academy Mozarteum (Salzburg, 1992) and the win at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1994.
