In 2024, she won the coveted UBS Young Artist Award: the young, up-and-coming cellist from Salzburg, Julia Hagen. In addition to the opportunity to perform with the Vienna Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann at the renowned Lucerne Festival, which the press hailed as "brilliant," the award places the talented, full-blooded musician in an illustrious gallery, including names such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Sol Gabetta, Martin Helmchen, Vilde Frang, and Kian Soltani, for whom the award has once opened the door to international careers. In the master concert at the Mozarteum Foundation, the artist and her piano partner Annika Treutler will devote themselves to the cello works of great composers, including a detour into the world of fairy tales.

A virtuosic horn concerto by the young Strauss, framed by a lighthearted Schubert symphony and Mendelssohn's overture about the beautiful mermaid who leaves her mermaid realm to live happily with her knight. What could be better – for the horn as well as for this "Quick & Classy" concert? Audiences can also look forward to the principal horn player of the hr-Sinfonieorchester, Kristian Katzenberger, and an early work by the Viennese Romantic composer. While modest in its means and brevity, and reminiscent of Mozart, its rich harmonies and ethereal melodies make it a true Schubert.

To mark the significant anniversary of the Reformation in Hesse, which the Protestant Church will celebrate in 2026, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) will perform a celebratory concert in Homberg (Efze) under the direction of Austrian conductor Katharina Wincor. The program at St. Mary's Church will feature a virtuosic horn concerto by the young Richard Strauss, performed by hr-Sinfonieorchester's solo horn player Kristian Katzenberger, as well as two captivating orchestral overtures by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The orchestra will also present the Fifth Symphony by Franz Schubert as the main symphonic work of the concert.

Fabrizio Falasca is considered among the leading Italian violinists of his generation. He regularly performs as soloist in the most prestigious theaters and festivals throughout the world, such as the Royal Festival Hall in London, Brahms Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, Salle Garnier in Montecarlo, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova and the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli, to name a few. He is in demand as a guest concertmaster with world class orchestras including the Philharmonia of London, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and regularly leads the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari Orchestra, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra, Teatro dell'Opera Orchestra in Rome, Petruzzelli Orchestra in Bari. In 2016, he won the Concertmaster position of the Tyroler Symphonie Orchester Innsbruck, and in the same year he joined the Philharmonia Orchestra in London as Assistant Leader, position currently held. In 2022 he won the Concertmaster position of the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari Orchestra. He regularly performs chamber music with his string quartet, the Philharmonia Chamber Players, and with musicians such as B. Canino, F. Petracchi, J. Ju, and A. Pompa-Baldi among others. Falasca is often featured on the Italian national broadcasting Radio RAI, as well as on BBC Radio, and is a prolific recording artist for various labels such as Centaur Records, CPO, Aulicus Classics, Amadeus and Brilliant Classics. He is a laureate of the Vittorio Veneto and the Postacchini International Violin Competitions. Fabrizio studied with Salvatore Accardo at the Stauffer Academy, with Felice Cusano at the Fiesole Music School, and Dora Schwarzberg. After his studies in Italy, he was rewarded a scholarship and graduated with Master of Music at the Royal Academy of Music in London under So-Ock Kim. His teachers includes M.Vengerov and L.Kavakos. He is currently violin professor at the Conservatory of Potenza, Italy and at the London Performing Academy of Music. Beethoven composed his Second Symphony in 1802 during a stay in Heiligenstadt, and at that time his hearing loss was becoming a serious problem. At the same time, he wrote the personal document Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he describes his inner struggle with his deafness and the desperation he felt that his musical career might be over. He even considered suicide, but decided to continue both living and working. Symphony No. 2 thus reflects the decision to fight on. The music is filled with energy and optimism – a work that radiates vitality, joy and determination. In this way, the symphony is both a result of his suffering and a sign of his indomitable spirit that refused to give up.

All of these solo projects have been enthusiastically received by critics, whether for his "sharp articulation" (Frankfurter Allgemeine), his convincing "sensate mind and exquisite artist of tone color" (Rondo), or his interpretations that come across as "grand, almost visionary narratives" (Kulturspiegel). His playing, NDR Kultur summarizes, is "colorful, thoughtful, courageous, and dreamily assured."

Cello extraordinaire and artist-in-residence Maximilian Hornung is performing as a soloist for the Chamber Music series at the opera house, where he will present two cello concertos. After the technically demanding, classic C Major Concerto by Haydn, he will perform an exciting new work by Georgian composer Vaja Azarashvili. The latter is particularly close to Hornung’s heart. The popular octet by Mendelssohn will serve as the energetic finale.

In 2024, the Trio con Brio Copenhagen celebrated its 25th stage anniversary: ​​a quarter-century of ensemble history, during which the three have delighted audiences with their characteristic blend of harmonious interplay and instrumental perfection. They have already demonstrated their talent in Duisburg, too, in the 2022/2023 season with works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert, among others. This time, the program features Lili Boulanger, one of the most gifted composers of her time: she was the first woman ever to win the famous Rome Prize before her tragically early death from tuberculosis at the age of 24. However, she was still able to complete a pair of unlikely works for trio: one, "D'un matin de printemps," full of enchanting spring colors and hope, the other, "D'un soir triste," full of despair and melancholy. The only piano trio by Maurice Ravel follows in a cheerful and relaxed manner, in which the composer plays with sophisticated sound mixtures and intricate rhythms, while Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Piano Trio No. 2 strikes a particularly passionate tone and is, as the composer himself remarked, "a bit nauseating to play."

The Czech Philharmonic returns to Vienna’s Konzerthaus two years after its last appearance—and nearly a century after its debut there. Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov will be joined by acclaimed Italian pianist Beatrice Rana and a trio of vocal soloists: Stefanie Irányi, Martin Mitterrutzner, and Jongmin Park. The programme will include works by Mendelssohn, Ravel, and Stravinsky.

Hungarian maestro Iván Fischer has been a lifelong advocate for Hungarian music. His fascination with Béla Bartók’s connection to both tradition as well as modernity is a heartfelt conviction that can now be fully savoured in his interpretation of Bartók’s Three Village Scenes, which will be performed for the first time by the BRSO. The same applies to Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto, featuring Vilde Frang as soloist. Listening to the Norwegian violinist is a wonderful experience, because she plays every nuance – from the most delicate whisper to the most powerful bow stroke – with absolute conviction. A work that has not been performed by the BRSO for some time is Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony, known as the Scottish: it is the composer’s epic, sublime, and distinctly lyrical declaration of love to the land of the legendary Highlands.

Cellist Andreas Brantelid is one of the best musicians of his generation. At just 14 years old, he made his debut with the Royal Danish Orchestra, playing Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto – the same iconic work that cello legend Jacqueline Du Pré also made his debut with.


When he turned 30, he described his passion for music to DR with the words: “There's something about it that you can't help but do. I can't really give you an answer as to why I have the lifestyle I have, which is to travel a lot and play concerts all the time. It can't be any other way. It would simply hurt too much in the heart to say no to playing.”

Composers of the 19th century seized upon the violin’s ability to imitate the human voice and go straight to the heart; this program also shows the influence that skillful performers had on these composers and works. From Schubert’s masterful violin-piano duo, to American Amy Beach’s soul-searching Romance dedicated to violinist Maud Powell, to Brahms’s lyrical sonata inspired by his friendship with Joseph Joachim and Clara Schumann, and closing with Mendelssohn’s sonata that went unpublished for over 100 years until its revival by Yehudi Menuhin, the soulful sound of the violin resonates throughout this program.

The world-famous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs four of the most celebrated and richly textured pieces in orchestral repertoire in the first of two Sunday afternoon concerts.

The celebratory outer movements of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C embrace a glowing Andante forever associated with the romantic tragedy of the Swedish film Elvira Madigan.

Schubert’s Eighth Symphony is the best known of all his orchestral music, despite its famously – and mysteriously – unfinished state, in which darkly ominous yearning bursts into radiant optimism.

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis perhaps defined Vaughan Williams’ musical personality. Applying to a Tudor theme an admixture of English folksong and translucent orchestral textures learnt in Paris, Vaughan Williams achieved alchemy; a century on, the Fantasia is an established classic, from luminous opening chords to ecstatic counterpoint.

Voices carry at Sunset Center when we are joined by the Monterey Symphony Singers for a concert of Classical and Romantic masters. Tonal waves crash on the rocks of the Scottish Isles in Felix Mendelsohn's vivid concert overture The Hebrides. Composed for the Catholic Feast of the Corpus Christi, Ave Verum Corpus is a radiant gem and among a handful of works Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed in the final year of his life. Hear art song wunderkind Franz Schubert's venture into sacred choral music in the sublime Mass in G major. The program concludes with a composer credited with inventing the symphony form: Franz Joseph Haydn and his propulsive Symphony No. 104, "London."

Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a decidedly playful overture by a very youthful Felix Mendelssohn (composed when he was just 17 years old). This sparkling work captures the magic of the fairy kingdom, the humor of the lovers’ entanglements, and the grandeur of Theseus’ court. Violinist Rachel Barton Pine returns to play Korngold’s Violin Concerto — a lush and romantic work that glows with cinematic beauty and emotional depth — bridging the worlds of classical music and Hollywood film scores. Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune is dreamlike music inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s poem about a faun’s sensual reverie that paints a lush and languid musical landscape, and a sense of wonder. Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka tells the story of a tragic puppet brought to life by a magician, set against the vibrant backdrop of a Russian fair. All four of these lively pieces of music will fill us with a lightness of being.

Join cellist Annie Jacobs-Perkins for an evening of rich storytelling and dynamic energy. The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s whimsical A Midsummer Night’s Dream overture, followed by Bloch’s deeply expressive Schelomo, a Hebraic rhapsody for cello and orchestra. The lively Polka and Fugue from Weinberger’s Schwanda, the Bagpiper leads to a vibrant finale with Bernstein’s beloved Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
