Double Bass Concerto Competition

Due to the renovation of the Frankfurt Concert Hall, we are moving part of our chamber music series to the event hall of the Frankfurt Kleist Museum this season. This is a fitting opportunity for this Sunday matinee, as this museum will be opening the exhibition "Kleist and Music" in the fall of 2025. With this matinee, we are providing a piece of accompanying music to this show and to Kleist's era. The poet Heinrich von Kleist not only played the clarinet himself, but with Johann Baptist Vanhal and Iwan Müller, we have two of his contemporaries in the program. In Müller, we also have a clarinetist and composer who, as an instrument maker, made significant contributions to the further development of the clarinet.

The music at this concert is "real" Viennese classics". Vienna was Europe's musical stronghold and melting pot in the latter part of the 18th century. Here, a new musical style emerged that, compared to the Italian Baroque and Rococo of the past, was less elaborate and more simple and expressive. All the music we know and practice today as "classical music" has its roots there.

Dvořák’s String Serenade enchants with lush harmonies and folk-inspired melodies, showing off the best of the OPO string section. Vanhal’s Double Bassoon Concert will highlight one of the true gems of the orchestra in a lively and rich piece. Experience the Classical Era elegance and grace of Mozart’s Violin Concerto. Coleridge-Taylor’s Four Novelletten concludes the program pulling from African-American and British traditions to create a diverse and emotional melody. This program will create an evening of music showcasing the depth of the OPO Musicians and rich repertoire.

Join us for an enchanting evening of bassoon mastery featuring James Smelley, a talented Master of Music student under the guidance of David McGill. Highlights include Mozart's Bassoon Concerto in B-flat Major, K. 191, and Vanhal's Concerto for Two Bassoons in F Major, offering a rare treat with Alexander Lake joining Smelley for a captivating dual performance. Glière's Deux morceaux, Op. 35, Nos. 8 and 9, and Bozza's Fantaisie for bassoon and piano, with Nathan Canfield on piano, will further display the instrument's versatility and the performers' technical prowess.
