Three icons of Romanticism, an emotional intermezzo, a world-famous violin concerto and the sounds of the Rhein will make up the program of the Budapest Festival Orchestra in Montpellier. The first notes of the concert will be played in a commemoration: Brahms’s lament seeking calm will be performed in the orchestration and in memory of Victor Aviat, principal oboist of the orchestra, who passed away in May. The Mendelssohn concerto in the middle, comprising a challenging opening movement, a lyrical aria and a finale evoking A Midsummer Night’s Dream will feature the soloist Renaud Capuçon, a returning guest artist for the BFO. The former concertmaster of Claudio Abbado will use his 1737 Guarnieri violin to share the deep and nuanced tones of the piece, while displaying the virtuosity which makes him a favorite of audiences and critics. The program will conclude with a Schumann symphony inspired by pleasant experiences and calling to mind a peaceful riverside excursion.

Full focus on the music: Every year, several members of the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra travel to Italy, more precisely to the picturesque little town of Montepulciano, not far from Siena. There, surrounded by the sun-drenched Tuscan landscape, is the Academy of Music and Performing Arts, where the musicians can intensively hone selected works that they will present to the Duisburg audience upon their return from the south. Fittingly, this time's program includes Brahms's cheerful String Quintet No. 2, which he composed during his summer vacation in Bad Ischl. This will be accompanied by Mendelssohn Bartholdy's String Quintet No. 1, composed in the spring of 1826, when he was 17 years old.

Renowned for the intense focus of his music making and what the Guardian calls ‘the gentle, unshowy authority of his stage manner’, Konstantin Lifschitz combines the best of the great Russian tradition with tremendous poetic refinement. He begins with the Romantic music of Robert Schumann, before plunging into the headlong drama of Liszt’s First Mephisto Waltz and the striking contrasts of Brahms’s late Fantasien, which recall the fluctuating moods of Schumann’s youthful Kreisleriana.

In summer, we always look forward to guest performances at festivals in charming spa towns – and this time, under the direction of our principal conductor, we are fittingly presenting an all-Brahms program with pieces that also sprang from idyllic stays. The Hamburg native and later adopted Viennese composer enjoyed working on his compositions in scenic locations. He frequently traveled to Lake Wörthersee, for example: so many melodies, he remarked with a twinkle in his eye, were floating about there that one had to be careful not to "tread on them." He captured some of these melodies so playfully for his most important symphonic and concertante works that even his contemporaries perceived them as "moments of the highest poetic beauty" – or raved: "It's nothing but blue skies, babbling brooks, sunshine, and cool green shade!" After Brahms had spent his holidays in the Vienna Woods, his music was described as extremely "musical.

Romanian composer Tiberiu Olah’s Sonata for clarinet solo distils the energy and mystery of primeval folk music into a short work of immense character. Julian Bliss sets it in company with the lyricism of the second of the two Clarinet sonatas Brahms composed in his final years. In the programme’s second half, he and James Baillieu explore the melancholy moods of Robert Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op. 73 and restless contrasts of Brahms’s Clarinet Sonata in F minor.

We begin with Brahms’ ‘Tragic Overture’, which confronts darkness head-on. Composed in 1880 as the sombre counterpart to his ‘Academic Festival Overture’, it whips up a storm of emotional energy, embodying what Brahms called “the serious side of life”. 

Next is Sibelius’ haunting ‘Valse Triste’. Originally composed for a 1903 play, this melancholic waltz depicts a dying woman’s fevered dream, where she dances with memories and ghosts. At the end, four solo violins add a fragile, otherworldly coda. 

Shostakovich’s monumental Seventh Symphony completes the arc from despair to defiance. It was composed during the 1941 siege of Leningrad, a time of unimaginable suffering for citizens. This epic work transforms the nightmare of war – represented by the famous ‘invasion theme’ in the first movement – into ultimate victory.

German-born Rolf Schulte, whom The New Yorker has called “one of the most distinguished violinists of our day,” started playing the violin at age five under his father’s tutelage. He later studied with Kurt Schäffer at the Robert Schumann Institute in Düsseldorf, attended Yehudi Menuhin’s summer course in Gstaad, Switzerland, and studied with Franco Gulli at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena before moving to the United States to study with Ivan Galamian at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. At age 16, he made his orchestral debut with the Philharmonia Hungarica in Cologne, playing Mendelssohn’s Concerto. Under the auspices of Young Concert Artists he gave his New York debut at Town Hall to great acclaim.

The relationship between Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms is one of the most fascinating triangular relationships in music history. It was characterized by deep friendship, profound artistic admiration, and emotional intimacy that—one might hope—always remained within the bounds of social conventions. Robert Schumann, the visionary composer and music writer, and Clara Schumann, the exceptional pianist and passionate interpreter of his works, had a marriage marked by intense musical collaboration, but also by Robert's recurring mental health crises. When the twenty-year-old Johannes Brahms entered the couple's lives in 1853—young, brimming with creative energy, and possessing a talent that Robert celebrated with ecstatic enthusiasm as opening up "new paths" in music—a particularly close bond developed between the three of them. Robert treated the young Brahms with fatherly affection, nurtured his talent, and recognized his extraordinary genius, while Clara saw him as a kindred spirit and intellectual companion. The season finale will be breathtaking: the cycle of all Brahms symphonies will be completed, and Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto delivers pure drama. Musical essays are unusual, yet the connection between music and rhetoric already exists in works of earlier centuries. Barber brings the American essay genre into a one-movement orchestral form that, while not programmatic, is nevertheless rooted in a non-musical idea. Brahms's symphonic debut, which only saw the light of day in 1876 after decades of preparation and subtly represents a reaction to the national unification of Germany, appears to have a very similar structure.

The Budapest Festival Orchestra will conclude its guest tour in Bad Kissingen with a vibrant and colorful program. The concert will open with a choral work by Fanny Mendelssohn, a talented member of the Mendelssohn family who remained unrecognized, as orchestra members are keen a cappella singers and committed to the oeuvre of rarely performed composers. After the orchestra musicians, Gramophone Award-winning Julia Fischer’s violin from 1742 will take center stage. The soloist for Beethoven’s lone, grand violin concerto is not only a violinist: she is also a pianist, a quartet player, an instructor and the founder of a youth orchestra. As a reviewer wrote, “She has a pure tone, impeccable intonation, and immaculate technique, but she also has a warm heart and a radiant soul”. The concert will be concluded by the serene symphony of Johannes Brahms, written when he had finally stepped out from Beethoven’s shadow.

A finale with two masterpieces. Who doesn't know and love Schubert's only piano quintet with its famous variation movement on the "capricious trout"? The song's cheerful tone imbues the entire quintet with an aura of carefree musical joy, to which its bright, luminous sound also contributes. In stark contrast, this is preceded by Brahms's long-matured, final piano quartet, which reflects deep biographical conflicts. It is among the most impressive chamber music of the Romantic era. When he sent the final version to his publisher, Brahms once jokingly suggested that the edition of the score should include a picture of the composer "in a Werther costume"—an allusion to Goethe's despairing suicide victim, as well as a reflection on the lingering effects of his more than 20-year-long turmoil in his love triangle with Clara and Robert Schumann.

Brahms was not a symphonist like the others. Throughout his life, he wrote magnificent choral music, rediscovering Schütz and Bach, to whom, like Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Schumann, he felt a deep connection. Long before writing his First Symphony , his experience with the choir brought him gravity and jubilation, all human feelings contained in the seven movements of A German Requiem , three of which—the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th—are fugues reminiscent of Handel. After reaching the great German cities gripped by the fever of choral singing, this requiem of hope was heard in April 1873 in the British capital. Having become a pillar of the choral repertoire, it promises divine clemency. The two arias sung by baritone Stéphane Degout contribute powerfully to this spiritual happiness that he proclaims with faith.

Principal Conductor Ryan Bancroft takes to the podium for his final concert in the title role as we draw our 2025-26 Season to a close, starting with Stravinsky's symphonic poem Song of the Nightingale. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale, we hear the story of an emperor in his ornate Chinese palace and the glorious singing of nightingales that accompanies his life.

Johannes Brahms looked out over an Austrian lake as he worked on his Symphony No. 2. The music captures the menacing yet mellifluous view of nature he saw, as the passing clouds of day gave way to the infinite beauty of the sunset, the dark stillness of night and a glorious awakening to a new day. Before this, Sir Stephen Hough joins Marios Papadopoulos and the orchestra for a performance of his own piano concerto, a work ‘of jaw-dropping complexity and finger-crunching virtuosity’ for orchestra and pianist, in the words of one critic. The concert opens with purifying music by Ralph Vaughan Williams: his serene and somehow wholly English Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

Seven prisoners escape from a concentration camp during the Nazi era; only one survives and gropes his way to freedom on a dangerous path. Hans Werner Henze used the material from Anna Seghers's seminal novel as the basis for his Ninth Symphony, which, according to the composer, is "an expression of the greatest reverence for the people who resisted during the period of Nazi-fascist terror and who gave their lives for freedom of thought."

In his Serenade Opus 44 , a jewel of spontaneity straight out of Czech folklore, Dvořák alternates joyful village dances with more nostalgic melodies. They showcase bassoons and oboes with a subtle art of counterpoint. As for Brahms, his Serenade No. 1 marks his symphonic debut and deploys his classical architecture refreshed by romantic colors. The Orchestre National Montpellier reveals the full palette of melodies that seem blown by the wind – from the transparency of the minuets to the majesty of the finales. A sensitive homage to the instruments that sing, converse, and dance.
