Changes at home hit hard when viewed from abroad. For Dvořák, learning that his first love (and sister-in-law) was terminally ill back in Bohemia brought emotional anguish that was only intensified by distance. Brahms was no stranger tto emotional turmoil either, candidly writing about his struggles with depression, though his Second Symphony pushes the dark clouds away for an uplifting finale. Both composers’ struggles with dark times resulted in profoundly emotional music that is amongst the best either ever wrote.

Described by Strad Magazine as being, “vigorous, extrovert and emphatic players with a vitality all their own,” the Nisaika Quartet’s origins go back to the 1980s at the Curtis Institute of Music. Four chamber-music-hungry friends and classmates, coached by Karen Tuttle and Felix Galimir, went on to win Deuxième Prix at the 8e Concours International de Quatuors à Cordes, a moment described as one of the greatest adventures of their musical lives. After finishing their undergraduate studies, this group of tenacious young musicians went their separate ways to pursue graduate and job opportunities, but always found themselves connected through the years. Now, after more than four decades and four illustrious careers as performers and pedagogues, the Nisaika Quartet reunites for a very special performance, featuring works by Webern, Beethoven, Puccini and Brahms.

Few works convey the human struggle in the face of mortality, between hope and despair, light and shadow, as movingly as Johannes Brahms's "German Requiem." With an individual selection of biblical passages, the composer created a thoroughly personal promise of comfort, which he himself said he would have preferred to call "human" rather than "German." Christian Thielemann, the "sound gilder" (Hamburger Abendblatt), conducts the Staatskapelle Berlin.

We end our anniversary celebration as we began: In the bright surroundings of Mogens Dahl Concert Hall and in the company of good music friends. Trio con Brio Copenhagen, together with Andreas Brantelid on cello, has put together a varied and festive program with a cello extravaganza and Mendelssohn's dramatic piano trio in C minor as the end of a four-day music festival.

The Romantic composer Brahms now kicks off this program. Although he initially failed to win over his contemporaries with his monumental symphonic Piano Concerto No. 1, the work later established itself and became a lasting success. Anniversary Concert #1

At the first Pro Musica concert of the year, the musicians of the Odense Symphony Orchestra take the audience on a journey through three centuries of chamber music history; from the inventor of the string quartet to the most beloved clarinet quintet of the high romantic period to a quintet from one of the greatest pioneers of the 20th century. In Haydn's stormy and ambitious late quartet, for example, we can look forward to the "witch's minuet" in two-part canon. Prokofiev's circus-inspired quintet from 1924 for the sonically motley combination of oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass is the most whimsical piece of music you will hear in a long time. It was written for a traveling ballet troupe under the title Trapeze, but achieved immortality as a six-movement, picturesque quintet.

With his German Requiem, Johannes Brahms found his own musical tone and expression. Deeply connected to the words and messages of the Bible and the spirit of Romanticism, and grounded in the achievements of tradition, he composed an astonishing work in his early thirties, intertwining vocal and instrumental parts to create a harmonious whole. He masterfully handled both the choir and solo voices, as well as the orchestra, with a multitude of haunting expressive moments that have secured the work a central place in churches and concert halls around the world since its composition in the 1860s.

Known for her thoughtful musicianship and probing musical voice, Nancy Zhou resonates with audiences worldwide. More than 20 years since her orchestral debut, Nancy has collaborated with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Munich Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony, Naples Philharmonic, and San Diego Symphony, among others.

Their paths converged in Vienna – those of the composers Mathilde Kralik von Meyrswalden, Johannes Brahms, and Hermann Grädener. Mrs. Kralik von Meyrswalden, the daughter of a Bohemian glass industrialist, had come to the music capital from Linz. The two somewhat older gentlemen came from Northern Germany: Brahms, as is well known, from Hamburg, and Grädener from Kiel. Grädener's father, Carl Georg, born in Rostock, maintained close contact with the greats of the music world. Even Clara Schumann stopped by the Grädeners on her travels. Hermann Grädener, in turn, became a friend of Johannes Brahms in Vienna. His piano concerto, written in the 1880s, is among the discoveries that pianist Oliver Triendl has been pursuing for years.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra returns to Santa Barbara once again under the baton of its esteemed Music Director Emeritus for Life, Riccardo Muti. For more than five decades, Maestro Muti has been a commanding presence on the world’s concert stages, shaping the sound of leading orchestras and opera houses as one of the last of the great Italian maestros in the tradition of Toscanini. The Boston Musical Intelligencer praises the Isidore String Quartet’s “invigorating and refreshing” playing and “bold virtuosity.” Winner of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the group was formed in 2019 at the Juilliard School. Since that time, the quartet has appeared in major series throughout North America, collaborating with eminent performers including James Ehnes, Jeremy Denk, Shai Wosner, and Jon Nakamatsu. The Isidore Quartet’s 2024-25 season included concert appearances across the US and Canada, as well as at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and multiple cities in Germany. Since their Banff Competition-winning performance featuring Billy Childs’s String Quartet No. 2 (“Awakenings”), the quartet has developed a strong connection to the composer’s works, and in the 2025-26 season, they will premiere a new string quartet written for them by Childs.

The Washington Chorus joins Gianandrea Noseda and the NSO for three choral masterpieces by Brahms. Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) and Gesang der Parzen (Song of the Fates) grapple with fate’s inescapable hand—one offering celestial consolation, the other a foreboding omen. Nänie, named for the Roman goddess, is a powerful requiem set to the poem by Friedrich von Schiller. These mesmeric works choral set the stage for a visceral finale: Schumann’s Symphony No. 2.

Songs of Destiny & Fate

World-renowned violinist Janine Jansen will make several guest appearances this season at the Swedish Radio Concert Hall, Berwaldhallen. Together with the legendary conductor Antonio Pappano and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, she will perform Johannes Brahms' technically challenging and musically virtuosic Violin Concerto in D major, written for the legendary violinist Joseph Joachim. After the intermission, Pappano will lead the orchestra in Richard Strauss' early symphonic poem Aus Italien , which depicts Italy's landscapes, history, and folk life in four movements.

Brahms has composed some of the most beloved chamber music, loved by both musicians and listeners, and the music both fascinates and inspires constantly. It is music in a romantic tone language full of emotions and rich sounds and at the same time built up with a clear structure. Brahms lived most of his life in Vienna, but had roots in Hamburg – and perhaps that is precisely why his music also carries a fundamental tone of Nordic weight and reflection.

Aristo Sham, the Gold Medalist and “Audience Favorite” of the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will join Maestro Loh and the Waco Symphony in playing the first piano concerto of Johannes Brahms. This competition was named for American pianist Van Cliburn who, in 1958 during the Cold War, won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In tribute to that monumental feat in artistic diplomacy, the WSO will perform Tchaikovsky’s final 6th Symphony. We open this concert with music by American composer Jessie Montgomery. She wrote Starburst in 2012 for The Sphinx Virtuosi, the flagship ensemble of the Sphinx Organization. Montgomery writes the following to describe this work: “Exploding gestures are juxtaposed with gentle fleeting melodies in an attempt to create a multidimensional soundscape.”

Bach's works are of such grandeur and fascination that the choice of instruments on which they are played quickly becomes irrelevant. This is especially true given that Bach himself wrote many pieces for a variety of instruments. The Finnish accordion virtuoso Janne Rättyä was therefore inspired to create unusual Bach arrangements. He also tackled the wonderful piano Petitesses of Henri Dutilleux, as well as Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances, which perfectly complement the Hungarian-inspired finale in Brahms's masterful String Quintet.

The Minguet Quartet's programs are not just chamber music of the highest caliber, but always also an invitation to the audience to engage in dialogue and participation. The four musicians have already committed themselves to this with their ensemble's name: their namesake is the Spanish writer and music educator Pablo Minguet, who strove in his writings to provide access to the fine arts for all. The fourth chamber concert also features works from different eras in dialogue with each other: the concert begins in a truly classical style with one of the last quartets by Joseph Haydn, the inventor of the string quartet; at the end, we hear Schoenberg's String Quartet No. 2, nothing less than a milestone in New Music – the transition to atonality. Tradition and modernity also converge in the works of the Romantics Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann, as they are performed in the transcription by Aribert Reimann, one of the most distinguished composers of the second half of the 20th century, who died in 2024. The quartet also enters into dialogue with soprano Sarah Maria Sun, who is also known for her profound program ideas and as a specialist in contemporary music: she has already sung more than 400 world premieres.

Dialogues

Dvořák is the favorite composer of many classical music fans and orchestras alike. His music plays well – and is pleasant to listen to. It is often lighthearted, comfortable, and full of life. The Czech national classic is represented twice in our concert – with two concert overtures, one of which poetically captures rural moods and views, the other sparklingly immerses itself in a turbulent carnival festivities. Brahms' profound A minor concerto, the so-called "Double Concerto," features two soloists – a work tailor-made for our brotherly soloist duo of Claudio and Oscar Bohórquez. The two also plays a role in Schubert's Symphony in B minor. It consists of two movements, not four like a conventional symphony, which is why it is nicknamed the Unfinished . Nevertheless, it is a complete masterpiece. It moves forward with double the force.

Music and memory have always been close companions; you cannot have one without the other. Brahms’s First Piano Concerto, a work of symphonic vastness and one of its composer’s greatest masterpieces, was written out of his burning grief at the early death of his mentor Robert Schumann and his desire to write a piece that would preserve the older composer’s memory for ever. Dvorák’s Seventh Symphony sprang from his intense longing for the freedom and independence of his native Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), and his passionate desire to commemorate those brave spirits who sacrificed so much in the cause of their beloved country.

It’s a match made in heaven: revered conductor Riccardo Muti and his beloved Chicago Symphony Orchestra, reconvening in Berkeley for a program of orchestral gems for one night only. Muti, who turns 84 this year, stepped down as the esteemed ensemble’s music director to assume the role of Music Director Emeritus for Life in 2023, but his close rapport with this group of remarkable musicians continues to enchant.

From its soaring, dreamy and majestic melodies to the boisterous lilt of the finale, its uncompromising demand for virtuoso playing makes it the perfect showcase for any violinist, and we're delighted to welcome back the acclaimed Johan Dalene in the solo role.
