Musical essays are unusual, yet the connection between music and rhetoric already exists in works of earlier centuries. Barber brings the American essay genre into a one-movement orchestral form that, while not programmatic, is nevertheless rooted in a non-musical idea. Brahms's symphonic debut, which only saw the light of day in 1876 after decades of preparation and subtly represents a reaction to the national unification of Germany, appears to have a very similar structure.

The Budapest Festival Orchestra will conclude its guest tour in Bad Kissingen with a vibrant and colorful program. The concert will open with a choral work by Fanny Mendelssohn, a talented member of the Mendelssohn family who remained unrecognized, as orchestra members are keen a cappella singers and committed to the oeuvre of rarely performed composers. After the orchestra musicians, Gramophone Award-winning Julia Fischer’s violin from 1742 will take center stage. The soloist for Beethoven’s lone, grand violin concerto is not only a violinist: she is also a pianist, a quartet player, an instructor and the founder of a youth orchestra. As a reviewer wrote, “She has a pure tone, impeccable intonation, and immaculate technique, but she also has a warm heart and a radiant soul”. The concert will be concluded by the serene symphony of Johannes Brahms, written when he had finally stepped out from Beethoven’s shadow.

A finale with two masterpieces. Who doesn't know and love Schubert's only piano quintet with its famous variation movement on the "capricious trout"? The song's cheerful tone imbues the entire quintet with an aura of carefree musical joy, to which its bright, luminous sound also contributes. In stark contrast, this is preceded by Brahms's long-matured, final piano quartet, which reflects deep biographical conflicts. It is among the most impressive chamber music of the Romantic era. When he sent the final version to his publisher, Brahms once jokingly suggested that the edition of the score should include a picture of the composer "in a Werther costume"—an allusion to Goethe's despairing suicide victim, as well as a reflection on the lingering effects of his more than 20-year-long turmoil in his love triangle with Clara and Robert Schumann.

Brahms was not a symphonist like the others. Throughout his life, he wrote magnificent choral music, rediscovering Schütz and Bach, to whom, like Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Schumann, he felt a deep connection. Long before writing his First Symphony , his experience with the choir brought him gravity and jubilation, all human feelings contained in the seven movements of A German Requiem , three of which—the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th—are fugues reminiscent of Handel. After reaching the great German cities gripped by the fever of choral singing, this requiem of hope was heard in April 1873 in the British capital. Having become a pillar of the choral repertoire, it promises divine clemency. The two arias sung by baritone Stéphane Degout contribute powerfully to this spiritual happiness that he proclaims with faith.

Johannes Brahms looked out over an Austrian lake as he worked on his Symphony No. 2. The music captures the menacing yet mellifluous view of nature he saw, as the passing clouds of day gave way to the infinite beauty of the sunset, the dark stillness of night and a glorious awakening to a new day. Before this, Sir Stephen Hough joins Marios Papadopoulos and the orchestra for a performance of his own piano concerto, a work ‘of jaw-dropping complexity and finger-crunching virtuosity’ for orchestra and pianist, in the words of one critic. The concert opens with purifying music by Ralph Vaughan Williams: his serene and somehow wholly English Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

There are works considered significant in music history, yet rarely heard in concert halls. One such treasure is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's String Sextet "Souvenir de Florence." Composed immediately after his opera "The Queen of Spades," it reflects a composer who, after intensive work in Florence, translated his impressions into the unfamiliar territory of chamber music. At the beginning of 1890, Tchaikovsky spent three months in Florence, where he devoted himself entirely to composing "The Queen of Spades"—the opera was completed in just 44 days. Even during this time, he encountered a melody whose elegiac character captured the essence of the city. This memory of Florence became the "Souvenir," the seed of his later String Sextet. Only back in St. Petersburg did Tchaikovsky transform the ideas from Italy into their final form—especially since he owed a musical expression of gratitude to the St. Petersburg Chamber Music Society, which had made him an honorary member. With "Souvenir de Florence," Tchaikovsky ventured into new compositional territory: a string sextet that is classically structured yet explores all the possibilities of chamber music interaction. The movement follows traditional form: an expressive sonata movement, a lyrical slow movement in ternary form, a lively scherzo with trio, and a sparkling rondo finale culminating in a virtuosic double fugue. The rich palette of tonal colors and expressive possibilities makes the work a true challenge—and at the same time a joy—for the performing musicians.

A friendship developed between Joseph Joachim, the celebrated violinist, and Johannes Brahms, the quintessential composer, characterized by both artistic admiration and critical tension. Joachim, immediately captivated by Brahms's music, soon became his most important confidant and interpreter. Their letters reveal a complex interplay of admiration, loyalty, and sometimes wounded pride—a delicate web of mutual respect and high expectations. However, from 1884 onward, the friendship between Johannes Brahms and Joseph Joachim was no longer as untroubled as in its early years, for Brahms had sided with Joachim's wife in their divorce proceedings, and since then, the once warm relationship had cooled—marked by expressions and gestures of reserve, coupled with the quiet pride of two artists. Now, however, Brahms's "Double Concerto" for violin and cello was intended to be a sign of reconciliation—a musical dialogue that sought to bridge the gap between them.

Building on the recent successes of the Festival Chorus we’re delighted to be presenting them for this special performance of Brahms‘ A German Requiem. This so-called “London” version of the Requiem was originally created in 1869 by the composer as a four-hand piano version of the complete work, incorporating voice and orchestra parts together for keyboard performance. It was not, therefore, simply a setting of the choral work with piano reduction of the orchestral parts, and will provide a powerful showcase for our excellent chorus.

The Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra is the oldest continuously operating orchestra in the state of Oregon. From its inception in 1906 as a collegiate orchestra composed of nine members, the symphony has grown into a full symphonic orchestra performing 3 major classical concerts, a holiday concert, and a children’s concert each season. Professional musicians from throughout the Willamette Valley are joined by talented community members, OSU faculty, and OSU students representing a wide span of majors across campus. Brahms’s magnificent First Symphony was many years in the making. And it may never have seen the light of day without the support and friendship of Robert Schumann and his wife Clara – an article by Robert Schumann launched Brahms’s composing career when the three first met, and they soon became devoted friends. The symphony is a 45-minute journey through all the poetry and power an orchestra can conjure.

Bach — and beyond. For the grand finale of Lucerne Festival Pulse, Víkingur Ólafsson himself takes the stage to perform the composer’s famous F minor Piano Concerto. Following intermission, Hong Kong-born maestra Elim Chan leads the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in Brahms’s Fourth Symphony — a work that likewise bears Bach’s influence. The finale’s Passacaglia theme, which Brahms transforms with masterly skill, comes from Bach’s earliest surviving cantata, Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich (“For Thee, O Lord, I Long”), BWV 150. Even in Berg’s Violin Concerto — “one of the most Romantic ever,” as Víkingur calls it — a Bach reference appears in the form of a quote from the chorale Es ist genug (“It Is Enough”). For this performance, he has invited his favorite violinist, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, entrusting her with a special role: instead of an encore, she will play the original chorale. The orchestra will sing along, and the audience is invited to join in. “That’s something I’m not sure has ever been done at Lucerne Festival,” Víkingur says. “But the question is, can we really ever have enough of music?” The answer is clear: no — nor of Lucerne Festival Pulse, which will return for its second edition in 2027.

‘I will comfort you as a mother comforts her child": Johannes Brahms' Requiem in German touches the heart - because it focuses on the grieving bereaved and not on the deceased and their salvation. Brahms himself called his unusual and not at all liturgically bound contribution to the genre ‘funeral music as a beatitude for those who suffer’ and thus created one of his most popular works. The Alte Oper gives amateur singers the opportunity to rehearse this work in the specially formed Enthusiastenchor and perform it together on the stage of the Great Hall - supported by the choir and orchestra of the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst.

Members of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra come together for an exhilarating evening of supersized chamber music, guaranteed to set the pulse racing. Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence is a work of turbulent anguish masquerading as one of utter joie de vivre, in which a thick-set ensemble dances its way around a tune the composer noted down during an otherwise fruitless trip to the Tuscan capital. Brahms’s own sextet for strings is an early work that combines Mozart’s charm, Beethoven’s exuberance, Mendelssohn’s momentum and Brahms’s own luxuriance – and to quite magnificent effect.
