In 1880, Johannes Brahms told his publisher that he could not deny his "melancholy disposition" the opportunity to write a "tragedy overture" following the "Academic Festival Overture". "One laughs, the other weeps". As the latter does not refer to a specific drama, but to "tragic itself", he called it the "Tragic Overture". In 1883, Brahms then worked in complete silence on his third symphony. No passages from letters, sketches or earlier versions provide any information about its origins.

Bold, provocative and brilliant, Federico Colli has commanded attention since winning the Gold Medal at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012 and has built a reputation as a ‘pianist likely to dominate the world stage in years to come’ (International Piano Magazine). For his debut at the Royal Concert Hall he brings Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, whose imperious opening sets the tone for a dynamic, epically-scaled dialogue between soloist and orchestra. As expected, Beethoven’s gestures are grand and heroic but there’s also room for great tenderness in the slow movement, which so impressed conductor Leonard Bernstein that he adopted its initial theme for the song ‘Somewhere’ in West Side Story.

Today's concert is the last of three concerts where the Arild Quartet plays all the string quartets by the German romantic master Johannes Brahms. A quartet by Haydn and Mozart is also played at each concert.

The beautiful historic hall of mirrors in the balcony foyer at the Royal Theatre's Gamle Stage forms the setting for the concert. Before each concert, Toke Lund Christiansen talks about the lives of the three master composers, their brilliant music and their mutual relationship.

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program perform in a pair of afternoon concerts for which the program’s Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Soovin Kim, violin, and Daniel Phillips, viola. These concerts are the capstone of a weeklong residency at Caramoor in which these young musicians participate in workshops, reading sessions, and ensemble rehearsals, culminating in live performances with their mentors. Since 1992, this program has identified some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of a professional career.

Dive into the majestic world of Aaron Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring Suite, a collection of movements compiled from the ballet under the same name, this orchestral gem captures the essence of the American landscape with its lush melodies and evocative harmonies. The orchestral suite is cast in eight uninterrupted sections, opening with a slowly blooming introduction before the unison strings burst into an elated Allegro, setting the stage for a journey through the sprawling wilderness of the Appalachian Mountains. Featuring a set of variations on the beloved Shaker tune “Simple Gifts,” the suite takes you on a captivating musical adventure, where every note paints a vivid picture of nature’s beauty and tranquility.

When the sound waves of Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem embrace the soul, a musical portal to the transcendent opens. Composed between 1865 and 1868, this requiem is written with emotions ranging from consolation to hope. A unique feature is Brahms' decision to use German text, taken from the German Bible, which gives the work a personal and almost meditative character.

The always-evolving Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble features musicians from the legendary Met Orchestra in a variety of unique programs. Together, along with special guest artists from the Metropolitan Opera and beyond, they explore a boundless world of chamber music, adapting to fit the instrumental needs of any piece—from all-time classics to hard-to-find hidden gems and standout works by many of today’s significant composers. This evening’s performance—the ensemble’s first of the Carnegie Hall season—is presented as part of the Hall’s 2024–2025 spotlight on the music of South Africa.

The Escher Quartet, comprising Adam Barnett-Hart and Brendan Speltz on violins, Pierre LaPointe on viola, and Brook Speltz on cello, has received acclaim worldwide for its insightful performances and tonal beauty. Their 2023-2024 season is marked by ambitious projects, including performances of the complete cycle of quartets by Bela Bartok.

Jordan Bak, an award-winning Jamaican-American violist, brings his radiant stage presence and dynamic interpretations to the stage, promising an evening of captivating performances.
