It remained his last major orchestral work, which Johannes Brahms completed in 1887—a "final act of stupidity," as he announced to his publisher Simrock with characteristic irony. Brahms dedicated the Double Concerto for Violin and Cello to the violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom he had been friends for decades. This friendship had recently reached a crisis, however, and to break the ice between them, Brahms sent the score to his friend. Joachim gratefully accepted the offer; thus, a rapprochement was established, and the furious finale proved to be a veritable celebration of reconciliation between the two. A uniquely well-coordinated duo, the siblings Tanja and Christian Tetzlaff, come to Lübeck for this double concerto.

Back in Liège, pianist Piotr Anderszewski devoted himself entirely to Brahms's last works for solo piano. After having abandoned the piano for 13 years to compose his 3rd and 4th Symphonies , numerous lieder and chamber music works, Brahms wrote his pianistic testament during the summers of 1892 and 1893. These 20 pieces ( op. 116 to 119 ), which Brahms nicknamed "lullabies of my suffering", a mixture of pain and serenity, constitute a kind of personal diary in which Clara Schumann saw "an inexhaustible treasure of masterpieces" .

The soundscapes of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra's chamber concerts are as diverse as the characters of the musicians who perform in them. The demands in the orchestra pit are often characterized by the size and diversity of the voices. Chamber music, on the other hand, reduces this dimension to smaller ensembles and allows for intimate musical interaction. As in a dialog, different opinions come together, new ideas emerge and develop during the performance, opening up a creative space for spontaneous development.

An enticing selection of art songs spans familiar and overlooked repertoire from myriad styles, all rooted in great literature with settings of Walt Whitman, Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, and Strauss’s opulent Four Last Songs with texts by Hermann Hesse. South African soprano Golda Schultz, who has starred at the Opéra National de Paris, Metropolitan Opera, and BBC Proms, brings this program to life with her “remarkable depth and dimension” and “distinctively thrilling radiance” (Financial Times).

In the music world, the opinion of music critic Eduard Hanslick had a major influence at the time. Writing about Johannes Brahms' Second Piano Concerto, he said that the musical idea behind the work would develop ‘an undreamt-of richness, not according to the dry recipes of academic art, but in lively blossoming and growth’. It was fortunate for Brahms that this emotionally gripping, densely woven work with its great diversity was able to secure its place in the classical music world – and that we can experience it this evening in the sensitive interpretation of star pianist Khatia Buniatishvili and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under the baton of Jonathan Nott. The orchestra will accompany the concert at the Alte Oper with Claude Debussy's ‘Images pour Orchestre’, whose three parts are inspired by musical forms and traditions from England, Spain and France, taking the audience on a journey through the musical culture of these three countries. Antonín Dvořák 's famous "Dumky" Trio is the focus of this chamber concert. The dumka, a Ukrainian folk song, is brought to life by the contrast between a subdued mood and cheerful interludes. With a sequence of six dumky, Dvořák impresses listeners with his endless melodic imagination. His trio is flanked by two sonatas for cello, one by Johannes Brahms, who was Dvořák 's great admirer and supporter, and one by Ludwig van Beethoven, without whom Romantic symphonic and Romantic chamber music would be unthinkable.

In "Death and Transfiguration," the 26-year-old Richard Strauss intended to depict "the hour of death of a man who had strove for the highest ideals—hence, presumably, of an artist." The heroic "transfiguration theme," which embodies these ideals, was borrowed by film composer John Williams for his soundtrack to "Superman." The trumpet concerto by Johann Georg Neruda, a Bohemian composer of the 18th century, is in the "heroic key" of E-flat major. In its original form, the concerto was a horn concerto for a virtuoso in the Saxon Court Orchestra, tailored precisely to his abilities. Its triumphant success began in the 1960s in a version for trumpet. By a roundabout route and after much refinement, Johannes Brahms arrived at his Symphony No. 1. Here, Brahms heroically emancipates himself from Beethoven, a role model he perceived as overpowering, in a hymn-like finale.

Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski will perform Johannes Brahms‘ Piano Quartet in C minor together with musicians from the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. This emotionally charged piece reflects a turbulent period in the composer’s life. Brahms began writing the quartet during the final days of Robert Schumann’s life, torn by concern for his friend’s illness and his love for Schumann’s wife. Nearly 20 years later, Brahms returned to the work and thoroughly revised it. The piano plays a central role in the quartet, at times leading and at other times supporting the string instruments.

We are joined by Esme Greenwood as the centrepiece in our Spring concert to play Bruch’s Violin Concerto. From Sheffield, Esme started learning the violin at the age of 6, and is a precocious talent. Currently studying at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music she won her first competition two years ago when aged only 12. Not only a budding soloist, she also enjoys orchestral and chamber music, recently becoming one of the youngest players to be awarded a place in the National Youth Orchestra, which sees her performing in some of the country’s major concert venues including the Barbican, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.

Two English folk songs form George Butterworth’s idyllic The Banks of Green Willow, premiered just two years before the promising young composer’s demise in the trenches of World War I. German Max Bruch, captivated by Scottish traditions, wove these melodies into his violin showpiece, Scottish Fantasy. Meanwhile, Brahms’ expressive Symphony No. 1, finely dubbed “Beethoven’s Tenth,” gestated for 22 years due to his remarkable perfectionism.

Brahms had a tendency to understate, because the “very small piano concerto” is in reality an enormous musical drama for piano and orchestra. It is music with an enormous range, from the fiery and thunderous to the intimate and lyrical, and everything in between.

Vilde Frang is a Norwegian star violinist who is now visiting Örebro for the first time. Her choice of solo concert reflects a very conscious musician who carefully thinks through her repertoire. The balance of this, somewhat fragile, music against Brahms' heavyweights is also carefully thought out. From his opening heavy drum beats, Brahms sets the direction from darkness to light. Brahms had struggled with the symphonic form for many years before finally releasing this monumental work that has since become a cornerstone of the symphonic repertoire. "Anyone else could cobble together the main themes from his scraps," Johannes Brahms enthused about Antonín Dvořák's melodic ingenuity. He first encountered the young Bohemian's works in 1973 – and was completely captivated. He supported Dvořák wherever he could, and a close friendship developed between the two composers. It is therefore extremely fitting that the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia's concert will feature works by Brahms and Dvořák side by side. Star pianist Daniil Trifonov will play the Hamburg composer's exhilarating Second Piano Concerto, while the second half of the concert will feature Antonín Dvořák's magnificent Seventh Symphony under the direction of the newly appointed orchestra leader, Daniel Harding.

Clara Schumann’s songs express contrasting themes of love and longing; intimacy and loss; lightness and darkness. The lyrical melodies translate beautifully to the expressive tones of the clarinet.

In 2024, she won the coveted UBS Young Artist Award: the young, up-and-coming cellist from Salzburg, Julia Hagen. In addition to the opportunity to perform with the Vienna Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann at the renowned Lucerne Festival, which the press hailed as "brilliant," the award places the talented, full-blooded musician in an illustrious gallery, including names such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Sol Gabetta, Martin Helmchen, Vilde Frang, and Kian Soltani, for whom the award has once opened the door to international careers. In the master concert at the Mozarteum Foundation, the artist and her piano partner Annika Treutler will devote themselves to the cello works of great composers, including a detour into the world of fairy tales.

To put it bluntly, one could rightly describe Johannes Brahms's German Requiem as a misnomer. This work is not a requiem, a Catholic requiem mass in Latin, but one that is entirely devoted to the living. It is not about the deceased themselves, their journey before the throne of God, the horrors of the Last Judgement, or the anxious plea for mercy in the afterlife. Rather, it addresses all those left behind on earth, "those who suffer" and who, in their despair, need consolation.

Düsseldorf, autumn 1853: Music director Robert Schumann had just completed a violin concerto for the young Joseph Joachim when the next child prodigy came knocking at his door: Johannes Brahms. Soulful days full of music followed – until Schumann was committed to a sanatorium in early 1854 after a suicide attempt. The artistic friendship between Joachim and Brahms endured a lifetime, despite occasional bouts of trouble.

From imitating birds to composing symphonies, our March concert explores how composers are inspired to create orchestral music. The concert will open with Respighi’s charming suite of music dedicated to our flying friends, Gli ucelli (The Birds). Inspired by compositions from past centuries, imitating the calls and activity of birds, Respighi gives it a updated touch, using modern orchestral instruments. This delightful suite will be followed by Brahms’s powerful Symphony No. 1 in C Minor. Long haunted by Beethoven’s legacy, Brahms waited until age 41 to produce this masterpiece, the first of only four symphonies the composer would produce. It certainly is a work worth waiting for, with soaring melodies, tender moments, and glorious climaxes, and a perennial orchestra and audience favorite.

This season, members of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) will present two masterpieces of chamber music at the Theater Altes Hallenbad in Friedberg. Who doesn't know and love Schubert's only piano quintet, with its famous variation movement on the "capricious trout"? The song's cheerful tone imbues the entire quintet with an aura of unbridled musical joy, to which its bright, luminous sound also contributes. In stark contrast, the program begins with Brahms's long-matured, final piano quartet, which reflects profound biographical conflicts. It is among the most impressive chamber music of the Romantic era.

Making their respective debuts, Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni and German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott join the San Francisco Symphony in Dvořák’s wrenching and radiant Cello Concerto, a paragon of the Romantic cello repertoire. Although it was conceived in the United States, its beating heart belongs to the homesick composer’s native Bohemia. Brahms composed the Second Symphony on summer holiday in the Austrian province of Carinthia, where he awoke at dawn to swim in Lake Wörth, gorge on fresh crab in the afternoon, and hike for hours. A work of bittersweet depth, the Second revels in bright sunshine and lingers in cool shadows.

In this program, the Charleston Symphony will perform two pieces that were written by Johannes Brahms 25 years apart: Symphony No. 3, written at age 50, and Piano Concerto No.1, composed in 1858 at just 25 years old.

In March, violinist David Grimal will join ERSO as both soloist and conductor, meaning no separate conductor will be on stage for this performance. The programme features Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto, a work dedicated to his close friend and one of the 19th century’s most renowned violinists, Hungarian Joseph Joachim. This concerto is considered one of the four great German violin concertos. The second half of the evening will showcase Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8—the shortest and most Haydn-like of his symphonies, filled with unexpected musical wit and lighthearted charm.

Symphonic Lunch V: Grimal and Brahms

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was his composition teacher; in addition to a symphony and a piano concerto, he himself wrote a variety of songs, chamber music, and piano works. Yet today, hardly anyone knows Georgi Catoire. To mark the 100th anniversary of his death on May 21, the program opens with his melancholic Piano Quintet in G minor, in which, despite all its originality, echoes of Johannes Brahms can also be heard. Brahms himself is also represented, with his symphonic-like Quintet in F minor. Interspersed with this piece is one of George Onslow's 34 string quintets: Harmonic richness and cantabile melodies characterize the work, in which the composer also achieves a special richness of sound through the instrumentation of cello and double bass.

"The Fantastic" is the theme of this season's chamber concerts in the Apollosaal, based on the season's first opera premiere, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann . In 1857, grieving his late mother, Johannes Brahms began work on his choral masterpiece Ein deutsches Requiem. Brahms’s colleague Schumann believed Brahms would deliver ‘wonderful glimpses of the spirit world’. Brahms obliged with a Requiem unlike any other: a piece that carries the gift of spiritual comfort rather than the threat of impending judgment – a glowing message of brotherhood and consolation, a work of its time and place but with universal resonance. Two outstanding soloists and the Crouch End Festival Chorus join the orchestra and Music Director Marios Papadopoulos for Brahms’s consolatory masterpiece.

Proclaimed "a phenomenon" by the Los Angeles Times and "one of the best pianists of his generation" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished concert pianist, improviser, and composer. Mr. Goodyear has performed with, and has been commissioned by, many of the major orchestras and chamber music organizations around the world.

Last year, Orchid Classics released Mr. Goodyear's recording of his suite for piano and orchestra, "Callaloo" and his piano sonata. His recent commissions include an orchestral work for the Chineke! Orchestra, his Piano Quintet for the Penderecki String Quartet, and a piano work for the Honens Piano Competition. His suite for solo violin, "Solo" was recorded by violinist Miranda Cuckson on the Urlicht Audiovisual label, and his work for cello and piano, "The Kapak" was recorded by cellist Inbal Segev on the Avie Records label.

The great strength and nobility of Brahms’ Fourth and final Symphony places it among his most profound achievements. Valentina Peleggi conducts, and the Richmond Symphony’s own Neal Carey plays Dvořák’s elegy for a long-lost love, the impassioned Cello Concerto, composed during the composer’s American sojourn. To begin, a colorful new work, commissioned by the Richmond Symphony from Jasmine Guo. A composer for cinema as well as the concert stage, her distinguished works have been honored and acclaimed.

The Desert Community Orchestra will perform Nations, Narratives, and Cultures concert at Burrough High School Parker Performing Arts Center. The concert will present powerful musical voices of Europe and the Americas, highlighting nation-building and cultural identity through iconic orchestral works. Featured is Schubert’s Symphony in B minor, The Unfinished Symphony, Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, a celebrated symbol of Mexican music and culture. Sibelius’s Finlandia, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, and Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5.

Andrew Loveland, from Los Angeles California, will be conducting. He is a Guatemalan-American cellist and conductor from Los Angeles, CA. With over ten years of performing and teaching experience, Mr. Loveland brings a unique experience to his interpretations and performances on the podium.

Starting in the 2026-2027 season, Marc Albrecht will take up the baton as principal conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. This season, he returns to Antwerp with music by Brahms, a composer he has admired since receiving his first Brahms score at age 12. Brahms’ First Piano Concerto, originally conceived as a sonata and later adapted into a symphony, reflects his early struggles with the symphonic form. Martin Helmchen, a cherished guest of the orchestra, performs this Beethoven-inspired masterpiece. Arnold Schoenberg’s orchestration of Brahms’ First Piano Quartet, crafted 80 years after the original, transforms the piece into a stunning tribute to one of the 19th century’s greatest symphonic composers.

Brahms is not only one of the most famous and cherished composers in all of 19th century music, but an artist of rich and wonderful contradictions. A musical architect of incredible intellectual skill, he wrote music that tugs instinctively at every human heart. Anyone can listen it and be deeply moved and captivated by it, but each of us will always find that there is more and more to discover in it.

When conductor Jun Märkl and violinist Stefan Jackiw last performed together with the VSO, The Vancouver Sun described their collaboration as “stellar”. Ten years later, they reunite to present Prokofiev’s emotionally intense Second Violin Concerto. Takemitsu’s meditative Ceremonial contrasts the euphoric finale of Brahms’ First Symphony, a fitting homage to the composer’s hero, Beethoven.

Brahms Festival: Symphony No. 3 & Violin Concerto

Hailed as one of the greatest violinists of our time, Augustin Hadelich returns to the MSO to perform Brahms’s soulful Violin Concerto. Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts Brahms’s Third Symphony, a nostalgic work with a recurring musical theme of “free but happy;” wrote Clara Schumann, “All the movements seem to be of one piece, one beat of the heart, each one a jewel!” The program opens with a companion piece to Brahms’s Third Symphony: Glanert’s Vexierbild (“Hidden Image”) draws direct inspiration from the Third, but in Glanert’s words, “it’s my own Brahms.”

Inaugural Nina Simone Piano Concerto Competition winner Clayton Stephenson opens the program with Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 — a lush, expansive dialogue between soloist and orchestra that flows with both grandeur and intimacy. Then, Schumann's Symphony No. 4 bursts onto the stage with energy and romantic fervor, weaving a metaphorical journey of human struggle, introspection and ultimate triumph.

The result was his fifth piano concerto, for which we’re joined by a virtuoso whose pizzazz is matched by only his precision – Bertrand Chamayou.

What do you do if you’ve had a falling-out with a cherished friend and advisor and want to make amends? Well, if you’re Johannes Brahms and violinist Josef Joachim is your friend, a Double Concerto is the perfect peace offering, expressed in musical language. A give-and-take between violin and cello as they trade phrases and musical gestures full of drama and lyricism, confirming the emotional capital they’ve invested in one another over the decades. Bringing the concerto to life are Chad Hoopes, internationally lauded faculty member of Southern Methodist University, and world-renowned cellist Jan Vogler. Maurice Cohn also leads the first DSO performance of Weill’s Second Symphony, composed in the fraught Post-World-War-I period. The funeral cortège-second movement, says commentator David Drew, is followed by a rondo finale with “marches and counter-marches, and a demented tarantella coda.”
