Brahms is said to have destroyed over 20 string quartets before settling on this “No. 1,” and Prokofiev composed his “2nd” while an evacuee from Moscow as Nazi air raids bombarded the city.

A romantic programme with a close connection to Dresden. As royal Kapellmeister from 1817, Carl Maria von Weber had a long-lasting impact on the city’s musical life. His »Oberon« overture is a late vision of romantic opera that is both radiant and dramatically charged. Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto was premiered on 4 December 1845 at the local Hotel de Saxe with Clara Schumann as soloist and Ferdinand Hiller conducting. Clara noted in her diary: »The concerto is quite rich in invention. All the movements are particularly beautiful, all of a piece, fresh and not too long.« Johannes Brahms was also closely associated with Dresden, frequently performing here as a pianist and conductor of his own works.

The young Russian phenomenon Andrey Gugnin -- who, last season, entered our hearts with a magisterial rendition of the Grieg Piano Concerto, done miraculously with the LSO without rehearsal! -- returns for what will no doubt be an equally majestic reading of the first of two concertos of Johannes Brahms, with whom our season began.....And on our second half, in another great La Crosse tradition, our two winning Conductor Wannabees will regale us with their podium talents! Two works redolent of the joys of summer -- a  poignant, forgotten gem of the Englishman Frederick Delius, and the ecstatic and oh-so-French "Daphnis and Chloe" ballet of Maurice Ravel -- wind up what will be a magnificent grand finale!

The Sacramento Youth Symphony Premier Orchestra celebrates its 70th Anniversary with a landmark concert event. The 75-piece orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Ryan Murray, will perform Aaron Copland’s spirited, folk-inspired ballet suite Rodeo, featuring the instantly recognizable final movement, “Hoe-Down.”

The program also includes Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, Nos. 5 and 6, alongside two outstanding student concerto performances. Nathalie Stutzmann returns to Berwaldhallen to lead the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in music by two of the giants of music history, Johann Sebastian Bach and Johannes Brahms. The concert begins with the sinfonia and an orchestral arrangement of the final chorus from Bach's very first church cantata; BWV 150 Herr, nach dir verlanget mich. Brahms' last and monumental Fourth Symphony concludes the concert.

And the renowned conductor also greatly appreciates working with this orchestra: ‘I've been fallen in love with this orchestra!’ What beautiful words! Together, they embark on a joyful journey of discovery into the soundscapes of a Romantic and modern repertoire: after works by Bartók and Busoni, this concert culminates in Johannes Brahms' Fourth Symphony, a composition that opened the door to the musical future at the time. For the first time this season, a soundscape concert will take place in the DIE EICHE columbarium. An urn cemetery has been created in the historic granary at Hansahafen, enabling a pioneering form of commemoration of the dead and simultaneously serving as a venue for cultural encounters. The events focus on a different theme each year; in 2026, the theme will be nature. The soundscape concert will present works for string quartet and voice that touch on the themes of nature, love, life, and death in diverse ways. The songs in Paul Hindemith's cycle "Melancholie" based on texts by Christian Morgenstern are filled with dreams, moonlight, and ghostly voices in the forest and fog. Johannes Brahms' five Ophelia songs focus on the woman from Shakespeare's "Hamlet," driven to madness and suicide. Her fate is also taken up in the first of Robert Schumann's Six Songs, Op. 107. In addition to and between the sung songs in the program, songs without words from the cycle "Cypresses" for string quartet will also be heard, with which Antonín Dvořák created a touching portrait of his childhood sweetheart.

It's a shame the composers can't meet in person this evening. It would certainly be entertaining to hear what the antipodes Brahms and Wagner would have to say to each other. While the musical theater reformer, who landed his first international hit with "Tannhäuser" in 1845, and the symphonists world-famous not only for his "Hungarian Dances" treated each other with at most mild malice, there had been a proverbial blowout between Brahms and Hugo Wolf. Brahms' attacks on his older colleague, which Wolf regularly published thereafter, were often amused to recount to his friends. But regardless of what one thought of the other, what one heard were nothing but masterpieces.

Winner of the Gold Medal at the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Aristo Sham is a laureate of international competitions, with first-prize wins at Ettlingen, Gina Bachauer, and the Monte Carlo Music Masters, Sham has played across Asia, Europe, and the United States with the likes of the London Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. The son of a piano teacher, Sham began lessons at age 3 and was competing and concertizing by age 10. Soon after, he was featured in the UK Channel 4 documentary The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies. Balancing piano with other interests, Sham earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Harvard University and a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory. He proceeded to study at the Ingesund School of Music in Sweden and earn an artist diploma from the Juilliard School. While pursuing a career as a pianist, Sham continues to enjoy other interests such as travel, aviation, gastronomy, oenology, and language.

The finale for Season 76 features an incredible Side-by-Side performance with the IFS Youth Orchestra, under the direction of our beloved Dr. Thomas Heuser in his last season concert during his tenure as IFS Music Director & Conductor. The music for the combined groups includes the beloved symphonic poem Finlandia by Jean Sibelius, plus the comic Overture to Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss Jr., whose 200th birthday in 2025 will be celebrated worldwide. A composer of our time, Detlev Glanert, meets an icon of Classical music, Johannes Brahms. Glanert answers Brahms’ highly complex, dense, headstrong last symphony with a piece that he casually titles “Music with Brahms.” In this wildly dynamic orchestral piece, he reveals himself to be the successor to the great Romantic composer. The contradictions between gods and people are the theme of the poems Nänie by Friedrich Schiller and Schicksalslied by Friedrich Hölderlin, which Brahms put to choir and orchestra. Explaining his orchestral arrangement of Brahms's First Piano Quartet, Arnold Schoenberg told a music critic: "1. I love the piece. 2. It is rarely played. 3. It is always played very poorly because the better the pianist, the louder he plays, and you can't hear anything from the strings." In the end, Schoenberg created a new soundscape that develops a completely unique appeal without denying its origins. Complemented by Brahms's own arrangement of the Liebeslieder Waltzes and Richard Strauss's setting of Goethe's Op. 14, this program is conducted by Giuseppe Mengoli, one of the most versatile young conductors of our time.

The mighty opening movement of Johannes Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 begins with a timpani roll. And with its timpani and trumpets, this concerto was a flop at its premiere, with the composer himself as soloist: the symphonic ambitions of this piece were too new and unusual for an instrumental concerto, which is precisely why it is today regarded as a masterpiece. However, the scandal provoked by Igor Stravinsky's ballet "The Rite of Spring" at its premiere in Paris a good 50 years later cannot be surpassed. The audience erupted violently in response to music that sought to capture the atmosphere of a ritual "from pagan Russia" through the elemental power of rhythm.

For Igor Levit, there seems to be nothing less than going the whole hog. When he gets involved with a cosmos of works, he does so as intensively as possible. The name Johannes Brahms stands above the worlds in which the exceptional pianist currently prefers to spend his time, and his Brahms interpretations in the celebrated double bill in February 2025 will still be well remembered by Frankfurt audiences. Levit readily admits his deep affection for the music of the Romantic composer, emphasising its emotional richness: "I experience happiness, I experience sadness, melancholy, being in love, loneliness, longing - like a kaleidoscope of what we humans are capable of feeling. Nevertheless, Brahms' monumental First Piano Concerto is always one thing above all else for him: demanding. It takes and takes and takes," says Levit. Together with the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, he rises to the challenge - and will allow us to peer into the heart of the notes. Just as Edward Elgar looked into the soul of a close friend in each of his enigmatic ‘Enigma Variations’.

The concert opens with Carlos Simon’s Fate Now Conquers, a 2020 work depicting the “unpredictable ways of fate,” inspired by Beethoven’s journals and Homer’s Iliad. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 features soloist Miri Yampolsky, whose artistry showcases the lyrical elegance and innovation of this pinnacle piano work. The evening concludes with Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, a radiant and expansive masterpiece filled with warmth, hope, and a triumphant spirit.
