International audience favorite Janine Jansen is a violin virtuoso of rare sensitivity, whose sound has been praised as “one of astonishing power and beauty” (The New York Times). In this program, highlighting one of the most important musical friendships of 19th-century Germany, Jansen and pianist Denis Kozhukhin pair arch-Romantic works by Clara and Robert Schumann with Brahms’s genial Violin Sonata No. 2 and his achingly lyrical Violin Sonata No. 3.

Chamber concerts are very popular with our orchestra musicians, allowing them to showcase new flavours and put individual instruments in the spotlight. Now, there is a wonderful rendezvous with the horn – about which the »Ideen zu einer Ästhetik der Tonkunst« (»Ideas on the Aesthetics of Music«) as early as 1784 stated that it was »humanly conceived as a sensitive soul for almost all societies«. Many composers were inspired by the instrument with its snail shape and distinctive sound to create music – including Mozart, whose horn pieces were all written for the virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb. He first played in the Salzburg court orchestra, but soon moved back to his hometown of Vienna. Due to his somewhat simple-minded character, however, he was often the target of Mozart’s witty remarks, who sometimes notated the pieces he wrote for him in different colours or added mocking remarks to the score. One result of this humorous friendship was the horn quintet from 1782, a work with lots of inventive humour and thematic imagination. The second composition was written by Brahms, who once disparaged the horn as a »brass viola« – yet he probably only meant this tongue-in-cheek, as it was his favourite instrument, especially in his youth. This may be why he wrote the poignant horn trio in 1865 as a mourning piece, shortly after his mother's death. It is characterised by a romantic sense of nature and hunting scenes, but also by mournful lamentations. His close friend Clara Schumann raved about the »extremely interesting work« with its opening movement, which is »very rich in engaging melodies«, its »beautiful« Adagio and its finale, which »is full of life«.

Roman Fukshansky serves as the principal clarinetist of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Napa Valley, and is a member of the Sun Valley Music Festival Orchestra in Idaho. He appears regularly as a guest musician with the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and has performed with virtually all of the professional orchestras throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. »Anyone who preserves the ability to see beauty will never grow old.« These words by Franz Kafka are wonderfully fitting for our esteemed Honorary Conductor, who has been a legend on the podium for a long time. Whilst he is approaching the age of 100, he still has a passion for meticulous attention to detail. He also has a congenial way of passing his positive energy on to the audience with his music. When asked what his secret is, he answered: »The love of music. It’s like a fire that you can’t put out – it inspires me, it challenges me.« And he added very sympathetically: »I’m an ordinary old man, but when you’re in love at the same time, it releases unexpected power reserves.« Herbert Blomstedt is a master of the art of interpretation, and his deeply human and keen spirit is unmistakable. As a sovereign connoisseur of the work in question, he always gives them a very personal interpretation. His characteristic trademarks are small but precise gestures or caressing hand movements. Added to this comes the charisma of an artist who is completely at peace with himself, who no longer needs to prove himself to anyone and performs with unwavering joy. In his self-created programmes, he likes to focus on unknown repertoire from his Swedish homeland – but in keeping with the motto that »old love never dies«, he regularly returns to his musical favourites. And with the two symphonies by Beethoven and Brahms, he will once again endeavour to achieve exactly what he so desires in his role as conductor: »If I can move people’s hearts, then I am happy.«

Founded in 1994 when violinist Christian and cellist Tanja Tetzlaff joined with violinist Elisabeth Kufferath and violist Hanna Weinmeister, the ensemble has maintained a position amidst the highest echelons of quartet music making while its individual members continue their own careers. The results have been highly praised: ‘Supremely lyrical, exactingly detailed playing combined with impeccable balance and unanimity, resulting in an overwhelming performance,’ wrote The New York Times of one event.

There is perhaps no more beloved violin concerto than Mendelssohn’s masterpiece. Journeying from darkness to light, it begins restless, mysterious and questioning, and ends in a blaze of colour, full of joy and exhilaration. The sheer quality of the music and lightness of touch, bursting with unbridled vitality that leaves audiences clamouring for more, makes it a favourite amongst performers and listeners alike. Brahms’ First Symphony, although inspired by those of his hero Beethoven, broke new ground for symphonic form. It is a symbolic journey from darkness to light, the themes developed from a handful of motivic nuggets, all smelted together into a shining edifice, with nothing wasted. A turbulent mood is established at the outset, by turns dark and meltingly warm, often infused with a rueful quality expressing a strain of sadness in his personality never lightened by artistic success. Schumann’s majestic and vivacious Overture, Scherzo & Finale is a joyous work. It opens in dramatic fashion, dark and challenging, until a lively major melody appears, lightening the mood.

Following her thrilling 2023 recital debut with pianist Julius Drake, Singaporean-British mezzo Fleur Barron returns to PCMS with the “fearless, yet probingly beautiful” (The Strad) Parker Quartet. Their collaboration includes the premiere of a new song cycle for string quartet and voice by Anthony Cheung (co-commissioned by PCMS), as well as arrangements of Brahms’s and Mahler’s songs, and John Luther Adams’s stunningly serene The Wind in High Places.

This season, works for horn can be enjoyed in the chamber concert of the hr Symphony Orchestra in Friedberg - all about hr solo horn player Marc Gruber in a recently modified program. He will be able to be heard in a duo with Beethoven and Glazunov and, as planned, in a sonorous and soulful trio with Brahms. Instead of the planned horn concerto by Ethel Smyth and the "Music with Horn" by Vagn Holmboe, Grace Kyung Eun Lee will also present three distinctive duos for violin and piano in the first part of the concert.

In 1880, Johannes Brahms told his publisher that he could not deny his "melancholy disposition" the opportunity to write a "tragedy overture" following the "Academic Festival Overture". "One laughs, the other weeps". As the latter does not refer to a specific drama, but to "tragic itself", he called it the "Tragic Overture". In 1883, Brahms then worked in complete silence on his third symphony. No passages from letters, sketches or earlier versions provide any information about its origins.

And there’s no letting up after the interval, as Principal Conductor Edward Gardner conducts Beethoven’s ground-breaking and revolutionary ‘Eroica’ Symphony.

Bold, provocative and brilliant, Federico Colli has commanded attention since winning the Gold Medal at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012 and has built a reputation as a ‘pianist likely to dominate the world stage in years to come’ (International Piano Magazine). For his debut at the Royal Concert Hall he brings Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, whose imperious opening sets the tone for a dynamic, epically-scaled dialogue between soloist and orchestra. As expected, Beethoven’s gestures are grand and heroic but there’s also room for great tenderness in the slow movement, which so impressed conductor Leonard Bernstein that he adopted its initial theme for the song ‘Somewhere’ in West Side Story.
