ASOYE: Fall Concert

Emerging talent from the University of Oxford is to the fore in this concert showcasing the winner of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s Senior Concerto Competition and the world premiere of a piece presented in our 2024 Composers' Workshop. Alessandro MacKinnon-Botti is both composer and soloist in his Voice-Leading for beatboxer and orchestra, while Isobel Neary-Adams plays Walton’s dark, excitable, lyrical and quick-witted viola concerto. Having opened with Glinka’s sprightly Ruslan and Ludmilla Overture, joined by a cohort of Side-by-Side alumni, the concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s symphonic expression of hope in the face of adversity, his luminous Symphony No. 5 Supported by the University of Oxford in celebration of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s Silver Jubilee.

The evening promises a journey through Tchaikovsky's passionate Violin Concerto, showcasing the phenomenal talents of Philippe Quint, whose performances have been celebrated by BBC Music Magazine. The concert will also feature Rimsky-Korsakov's vibrant Capriccio Espagnol, praised by Tchaikovsky himself as a "colossal masterpiece of instrumentation." Audiences will be treated to a selection from The Nutcracker and the thrilling 1812 Overture, culminating in a brilliant fireworks finale that promises to dazzle and inspire.

The Palestinian-Jewish star pianist Saleem Ashkar in a meeting with Nordic brute force and poetry in the form of Edvard Grieg's piano concerto. The piano concerto is framed by Glinka's overture to the opera  Ruslan & Ludmilla  and Rachmaninov's large-scale Second Symphony. Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider is responsible for the musical direction.

Roman Fukshansky serves as the principal clarinetist of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Napa Valley, and is a member of the Sun Valley Music Festival Orchestra in Idaho. He appears regularly as a guest musician with the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and has performed with virtually all of the professional orchestras throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Roman has toured with the San Francisco Symphony under the direction of MTT, appeared as principal clarinet with the Verbier Chamber Orchestra, and participated in the festivals of Sarasota, Idyllwild, Attergau, AIMS in Graz, and the White Nights Music Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia.
