With the end of the 2024/2025 season, Axel Kober has stepped down as General Music Director of the Duisburg Philharmonic. It was a long and fruitful collaboration, for which the conductor is now being honored with the 2025 Duisburg City Music Prize, sponsored by the Köhler-Osbahr Foundation. For him, the award is a wonderful acknowledgment – ​​"to receive feedback, so to speak, after the years spent together that what we have done has left its mark." And, of course, he will try "to continue to remain connected to Duisburg's musical life." A promise he immediately fulfills in the 4th Philharmonic Concert. After programming Arnold Schoenberg's powerful "Gurre-Lieder" in his farewell concert as General Music Director, he returns to his former orchestra conducting works by two American composers and combining them with Beethoven's Symphony No. 7: Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question" sounds mystical and transcendental, creating an iconic work of American modernism. Meanwhile, in Samuel Barber's popular Violin Concerto, violin virtuosity and voluptuous melodies enter into a delightful liaison. Dance-like rhythms then characterize Beethoven's Seventh, which, with the Allegretto, also contains one of the greatest hits of the Viennese classic.

Gustavo Dudamel opens his season as the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music and Artistic Director Designate with a program spanning the American musical landscape. As the NY Phil marks the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, the Orchestra presents a World Premiere by Kanaka Maoli composer Leilehua Lanzilotti and Symphony No. 2 by the forefather of American classical music, Charles Ives. Yunchan Lim is soloist in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3, dating from the Hungarian composer’s time as a New York–based émigré.

We can often understand music even better when we hear the words it is based on. In a delightful blend of concert and reading, the Studio Orchestra Duisburg and narrator Natalia Hüskens juxtapose musical and lyrical pairs of works—concrete, as in the artistic encounter between Gabriel Fauré and Paul Verlaine, or Ralph Waldo Emerson and Charles Ives, but also imaginary ones. Antonín Dvořák drew inspiration for his "Czech Suite" from the sounds of his homeland, while Mendelssohn Bartholdy found it for his "Hebrides Overture" in the magnificent natural scenery of Scotland. What would the appropriate poems sound like? The first serenade concert provides the answer.

We begin with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro, a lush reimagining of Baroque melody. Charles Ives follows with his inventive Violin Sonata no. 4, blending hymns, folk tunes, and bold harmonies to create a vibrantly eclectic soundscape of American life. The first half closes with Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata no. 2, Poème mystique, which shifts to a more introspective tone, offering profound emotional depth rooted in his Jewish heritage. The second half opens with John Adams’s Road Movies, a rhythmic portrayal of contemporary life, and continues with Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano, honoring one of America’s pioneering female composers. We conclude with Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite, a brilliant fusion of classical and jazz traditions–a testament to the cultural mosaic of twentieth-century American music.”

»I love surprises and breaking with conventions, as long as they are subtle.« When it comes to developing dramaturgically sophisticated concert programmes, Jakub Hrůša always proves to be a creative mind and also enjoys experimenting. He is now combining two deeply profound musical creations: Charles Ives’ famous work from 1908 revolves around the question of existence. It ultimately remains unanswered in the room, and the magical piece ends on the exact same note with which Shostakovich»s Symphony No. 11 begins – so that the two compositions merge into one another impressively in our concert. The gripping symphony is subtitled »The Year 1905« and refers to the »St Petersburg Bloody Sunday« — but the work also reflects the just as tragic events of 1957 when it was written. Our Chief Conductor has selected the violin concerto by a composer who originated from his home town of Brno and had to seek refuge in exile in America: Korngold kept his head above water there by writing film music, which left traces in his violin concerto – for which we welcome Bomsori Kim as soloist. An exciting programme full of mesmerising undertow that is thought-provoking but also goes straight to the heart – especially through the conducting of Jakub Hrůša, who said of his favourite recipe: »It is important to find a balance in which you create with emotional charge and at the same time respect the craft. That’s when the best moments happen. And when the audience engages in this kind of valuable interaction, nothing stands in the way of happiness.«

The Atlantic Classical Orchestra presents "Pipe Dreams," a captivating concert that places the organ at the heart of its fourth Masterworks series. This event features the brilliant Andrew Galuska, Director of Music and Fine Arts at the Community Church of Vero Beach, Florida, as the guest artist. Galuska, an award-winning organist, will guide the audience through a rare opportunity to experience Horatio Parker’s Concerto for Organ. Parker, a late-19th Century American composer and renowned pedagogue, was a significant figure in his time, having served as both a professor and dean at Yale.

The concert opens with a piece originally composed for organ by one of Parker’s students, Charles Ives. The orchestral arrangement by William Schuman retains the wit, charm, and humor of the original. The second half of the program features Edward Elgar’s magnificent Enigma Variations, a theme and fourteen variations, each portraying a friend, showcasing a range of emotions from virtuosic to poignant, hilarious, and sentimental.

The fact that a classical conductor is also declared one of the best artists at a traditional jazz festival is unusual and offers special opportunities - for example, inviting him with an American program: from Gershwin to Bernstein to the symphonic jazz of Duke Ellington. But it is not just his awards as a jazz pianist at festivals in Chicago and Wisconsin or his performances as a chansonnier with songs by the music satirist Georg Kreisler that make Patrick Hahn stand out from the wide field of young conductors. The Austrian, General Music Director in Wuppertal since 2021, also has qualities in the classical profession that are rarely found in this form at such a young age. What Patrick Hahn recognized early on is the psychological aspect of the conducting profession: If a conductor knows how to encourage the musicians to achieve top performances and if he is an inspiration to the musicians, then they simply play better. A simple equation that absolutely works for Patrick Hahn. The soloist in Gershwin's "Concerto in F" is Frank Dupree, a pianist who also has a second source of income in jazz. Hahn and Dupree: when it comes to the "American style," these two are pulling in the same direction.

Ryan Bancroft is a favourite among Philharmonia fans. Tonight, he conducts the Orchestra in Leicester for the first time in music by Beethoven and Strauss.

The opening of Also sprach Zarathustra might be one of the most recognisable in classical music. But there’s much more to the work than its 2001: A Space Odyssey fame. In its half-hour span, Strauss takes us on a philosophical journey exploring the meaning of life. With blazing brass and sumptuous strings, he creates a listening experience full of intense feeling. It’s a real highlight of the orchestral repertoire and gives our players a chance to show off the renowned Philharmonia sound.

Charles Ives described the opening of The Unanswered Question as a ‘cosmic landscape’ and this concert is very much rooted in landscapes of all types, from Ives’s exploration of the human spirit’s connection to the realm of nature to the pastoral idyll of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Gavin Higgins’s Horn Concerto was written for our soloist, Ben Goldscheider, and is inspired by the Forest of Dean, where Higgins grew up. There are echoes of hunting calls and Wagner in a work that finishes with a movement uniquely inspired by the forest floor and titled Mycelium Rondo.

Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts a powerful program highlighting three generations of American composers. In Aaron Copland’s stirring musical portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the composer begins by suggesting “the mysterious sense of fatality that surrounds Lincoln’s personality” and ends by attempting “to draw a simple but impressive frame about the words of Lincoln himself.” MSO Principal Clarinet Todd Levy performs Richard Danielpour’s From the Mountaintop, dedicated to the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The evening concludes with Charles Ives’s Second Symphony, which samples classic American folk tunes such as “America the Beautiful,” “Turkey in the Straw,” and “Camptown Races” — the last of which Lincoln himself used as a campaign song, bringing the concert full circle.

"The history of American composition at the beginning of the 20th century revolves around an absent center," states Alex Ross, music critic for the New Yorker, and even titles the corresponding chapter in his bestseller "The Rest is Noise" "The Invisibles." This refers to composers such as Charles Ives, Wallingford Riegger, Carl Ruggles and others who had to work hard to establish an identity as American composers. Barbara Hannigan has made it her mission to bring these "invisibles" back to light. After intensive research in the Library of Congress, she presents a program that is probably unique in its form. It shows American music between 1900 and 1945 as if through a magnifying glass: from radical simplicity to radical dissonance to the fusion of classical and popular music, which reached its peak on Broadway. A picture of musical diversity that must necessarily remain incomplete, but even in this form allows fascinating and surprising insights. Hannigan's particular focus is on the individual, edgy, rebellious voices that sought their own expression and broke new ground.

Orff’s profane and profound pseudo-medieval cantata Carmina burana is the banger of all choral bangers: No one who has heard the opening movement “O Fortuna” even once, whether live or on a film soundtrack, could question its eternal-earworm status. Also on the program: A new piano concerto by John Adams, featuring pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and conductor David Robertson, a responsive and nuanced interpreter of Adams’s eclectic soundscapes.

With the opening program on the theme of "America", Santtu-Matias Rouvali shows the musical diversity of the continent. Jazz great Duke Ellington is an example of African-American composers. His orchestral triptych "Three Black Kings" is a musical tribute to three mythological and historical black personalities. As a contemporary composer, Julia Wolfe reflects historical and current events in her music. The German cellist Alban Gerhardt presents Wolfe's energetic cello concerto "Wind in My Hair" as a German premiere. Charles Ives is considered the central figure of new music in America and the first American symphonist to emancipate himself from the European musical tradition. In his Symphony No. 2, Ives quotes traditional American melodies and weaves them with references to European Romanticism to create a complex and expressive sound fabric.

Her untimely passing in 2022 foreshadowed the loss of her husband of 32 years, influential composer Frederick Lesemann who wrote much of his later music for her and whose music she championed. This concert is a rare opportunity to hear all of Piano Spheres’ Core and Emeritus Artists on the same stage at the same time! They will perform works by Charles Ives, Arnold Schoenberg and John Cage often performed by Svrček, as well as music by Lesemann written for her. This concert is a love letter from Susan and Rick’s colleagues, students and friends, three of whom (composers Donald Crockett, Thomas Flaherty and Bill Alves) have written pieces for this concert as part of the Piano Spheres ‘30 for 30’ commissioning program.

The Pacific ocean with its pounding waves, free flowing groove and sizzle on the sand provide the backdrop for Gabriella Smith’s Tumblebird Contrails. Keening gulls and playful ravens overhead, and a hallucinatory jet trail painting pictures across the sky mirror in the ebb and flow of the sea in this impressionistic musical portrait.

BBC NOW’s very own Principal Trombonist, Donal Bannister steps out of the orchestra and into the solo spotlight in a world premiere by Simon Wills, written specially for Donal, before Principal Conductor Ryan Bancroft continues his exploration into the works of Charles Ives with BBC NOW, this time with his First Symphony. Meditative melodies contrast with energetic themes and hymn-like tunes meld with soaring lyricism in this encapsulatingly Romantic symphony.

Richard Wagner’s atmospheric Prelude to his opera Lohengrin(1848) is followed by Kurt Weill’s visceral response in 1941 to the bombing of Pearl Harbour – his setting of four powerful poems by the great American poet Walt Whitman, sung by BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist James Atkinson. Weill, the German-born Jewish émigré, fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and made his home in the USA.

October 20, 2024 marks the 150th birthday of America’s great original composer Charles Ives. Growing up in New England as the son of a bandmaster, Ives developed a uniquely American compositional voice.   His music includes ragtime, gospel hymns, parade marches, and wild, visionary dissonance, all woven into a sound never before heard in classical concert music. World renowned guest artist Stephen Drury will celebrate the Ives sesquicentennial two days after Ives’ birthday with a special performance of Ives’ complete sonatas for piano, including the monumental “Concord” sonata with its musical visions of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne and the Alcott family, as well as the quirky and ironic “Three Page Sonata.”  30 for 30 composer Paul Beaudoin composed a piece that “suggests some of the wilder, fantastical adventures into the half-childlike, half fairy-like phantasmal realm” of the Concord Sonata. Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms shared a deep and enduring friendship that greatly influenced their music. Clara, a brilliant pianist and composer, was a close confidante and mentor for Brahms. Their relationship, rooted in mutual respect and admiration, inspired some of the most beautiful and heartfelt compositions in classical music. This concert celebrates their unique bond and the timeless music born from it.

The program will also feature Connecticut’s official composer, Charles Ives, in honor of his 125th Birthday Anniversary! Born in Danbury in 1874, Ives attended Yale University and worked in the insurance industry, while also becoming one of the most influential composers in American history. Three Places in New England aims to paint a picture of American ideals, lifestyle and patriotism at the turn of the 20th century by musically visiting Boston Commons; Redding, Connecticut; and Stockbridge, Mass.

This concert brings together the innovative sounds of synths and classical music, featuring composer and keyboardist Will Gregory, known for his work with the electropop duo Goldfrapp. The 10-piece Moog Ensemble includes prominent figures from the pop and classical music scenes, such as Adrian Utley of Portishead, Hazel Mills from Florence and the Machine, and composer Graham Fitkin. 

The first half of the concert is a tribute to the pioneering women of electronic music, Delia Derbyshire and Wendy Carlos, with performances of synth-heavy, sci-fi movie soundtracks. Highlights include Wendy Carlos's Moog-overdubbed Bach arrangements and the score for Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The program also features pieces like Bernard Herrmann's Fahrenheit 451 Suite, Charles Ives's The Unanswered Question, and themes from iconic films and TV shows such as John Carpenter's Escape from New York, Vangelis's Chariots of Fire, and the Doctor Who theme by Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire.

Adding a unique twist, the concert includes the London premiere of Will Gregory’s suite for synths and orchestra, Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project. This performance is enhanced by the presence of Matt Parker, a renowned stand-up mathematician, who blends comedy with mathematical insights, creating an engaging and educational experience. This event promises a captivating journey through the retro-futurist world of electronic music, celebrating its rich history and innovative future.

Experience a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the BSO launches its 62nd concert season, its eleventh with Music Director Manny Laureano. In the opening concert of the 2024-25 season, we will open with the irreverent and witty Variations on America, by Charles Ives, which will leave you chuckling.  The BSO will showcase its beloved concertmaster, Michael Sutton, as he interprets the lovely The Lark Ascending, written by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. This piece is guaranteed to provide you with a moment of wonder, as you imagine a bird in flight. Among the ten psalm settings by Charles Ives, the setting of Psalm 90 stands out as the highlight and, according to Ives' wife, was the only composition that completely satisfied him. Ives was a master at combining hymn-like elements with the modern sound effects of the choir and creating a fascinating sense of familiarity through the instrumentation with four church bells. Bruckner's F minor Mass follows, a masterpiece of symphonic choral music whose premiere was called off because the conductor considered the work "too long and unsingable." A hasty judgment that Bruckner himself was able to refute with a celebrated premiere under his direction. To mark the Bruckner year, this concert program with Thomas Hengelbrock at the podium can be heard not only in the Isarphilharmonie, but also in the St. Florian Monastery in Upper Austria. In Bruckner's long-standing place of work, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra has been putting on benchmark Bruckner performances since the Celibidache era. Then as now, the Munich Philharmonic Choir takes on the demanding choral parts.
