Three renowned visionary artists of the next generation combine talents in this eclectic new piano trio, Junction. Violinist Stefan Jackiw, recognized for musicianship that combines poetry and purity with an impeccable technique, returns with pianist Conrad Tao and cellist Jay Campbell. Tao, who appears worldwide as a pianist and composer, has been dubbed a musician of “probing intellect and open-hearted vision” by the New York Times. Approaching both old and new works with the same curiosity and emotional commitment, Campbell has been called “electrifying” by the New York Times. Recent concerts of the trio have included performances at Washington Performing Arts, Portland Ovations and the Royal Conservatory in Toronto.

SPCO Artistic Partner Richard Egarr returns to escort us on a musical journey that contrasts darkness and light. The overture to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beloved opera, The Magic Flute, calls upon the power of truth, love and beauty to conquer the darkness while The Unanswered Question, Charles Ives’ riddle-like work, features a contemplative trumpet solo asking the “eternal question.” The Great Major C, Franz Schubert’s monumental symphony begins reverently before being enriched with many moments of ecstatic joy. Ryan Bancroft is a favourite among Philharmonia fans. Tonight, he conducts the Orchestra in Leicester for the first time in music by Beethoven and Strauss.

The opening of Also sprach Zarathustra might be one of the most recognisable in classical music. But there’s much more to the work than its 2001: A Space Odyssey fame. In its half-hour span, Strauss takes us on a philosophical journey exploring the meaning of life. With blazing brass and sumptuous strings, he creates a listening experience full of intense feeling. It’s a real highlight of the orchestral repertoire and gives our players a chance to show off the renowned Philharmonia sound.
