BBC NOW’s very own Principal Trombonist, Donal Bannister steps out of the orchestra and into the solo spotlight in a world premiere by Simon Wills, written specially for Donal, before Principal Conductor Ryan Bancroft continues his exploration into the works of Charles Ives with BBC NOW, this time with his First Symphony. Meditative melodies contrast with energetic themes and hymn-like tunes meld with soaring lyricism in this encapsulatingly Romantic symphony.

This concert celebrates their unique bond and the timeless music born from it.

The program will also feature Connecticut’s official composer, Charles Ives, in honor of his 125th Birthday Anniversary! Born in Danbury in 1874, Ives attended Yale University and worked in the insurance industry, while also becoming one of the most influential composers in American history. Three Places in New England aims to paint a picture of American ideals, lifestyle and patriotism at the turn of the 20th century by musically visiting Boston Commons; Redding, Connecticut; and Stockbridge, Mass.

The first half of the concert is a tribute to the pioneering women of electronic music, Delia Derbyshire and Wendy Carlos, with performances of synth-heavy, sci-fi movie soundtracks. Highlights include Wendy Carlos's Moog-overdubbed Bach arrangements and the score for Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The program also features pieces like Bernard Herrmann's Fahrenheit 451 Suite, Charles Ives's The Unanswered Question, and themes from iconic films and TV shows such as John Carpenter's Escape from New York, Vangelis's Chariots of Fire, and the Doctor Who theme by Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire.

Adding a unique twist, the concert includes the London premiere of Will Gregory’s suite for synths and orchestra, Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project. This performance is enhanced by the presence of Matt Parker, a renowned stand-up mathematician, who blends comedy with mathematical insights, creating an engaging and educational experience. Experience a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the BSO launches its 62nd concert season, its eleventh with Music Director Manny Laureano. In the opening concert of the 2024-25 season, we will open with the irreverent and witty Variations on America, by Charles Ives, which will leave you chuckling.  The BSO will showcase its beloved concertmaster, Michael Sutton, as he interprets the lovely The Lark Ascending, written by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Among the ten psalm settings by Charles Ives, the setting of Psalm 90 stands out as the highlight and, according to Ives' wife, was the only composition that completely satisfied him. Ives was a master at combining hymn-like elements with the modern sound effects of the choir and creating a fascinating sense of familiarity through the instrumentation with four church bells. Bruckner's F minor Mass follows, a masterpiece of symphonic choral music whose premiere was called off because the conductor considered the work "too long and unsingable." A hasty judgment that Bruckner himself was able to refute with a celebrated premiere under his direction. To mark the Bruckner year, this concert program with Thomas Hengelbrock at the podium can be heard not only in the Isarphilharmonie, but also in the St. Florian Monastery in Upper Austria. In Bruckner's long-standing place of work, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra has been putting on benchmark Bruckner performances since the Celibidache era. Then as now, the Munich Philharmonic Choir takes on the demanding choral parts.

A work dazzling in its ingenuity, technical skill and range of expression Enigma Variations was an immediate popular success and catapulted Elgar into national and international fame. The original theme is remarkable in that it has the same rhythm whether it is played forwards or backwards, and the two halves of the phrase suggest two different keys that create drama into the melody. Sibelius’ last symphony shines with a unique radiance. It is the culmination of a lifetime of work in the direction of concision and organic unity within symphonic form; themes and ideas mingling together in a seamless tapestry of motifs. Schumann’s Cello Concerto is a thoughtful work, at times contemplative and questioning, at others stormy and tumultuous, even playful. Ives referred to The Unanswered Question as a “cosmic landscape” in which the strings portray “the silences of the Druids.” Over that quiet background the solo trumpet phrase asks “the perennial question of existence.”

Facts are scarce and mysterious. Schubert made no mention of the symphony during his short lifetime. It lay buried, like hidden treasure, in a cluttered study until the 1860s – more than 30 years after his death. The full score, clearly written in Schubert’s own hand, includes two movements: a wonderful melodic first movement and a heartbreaking second. And then, nine bars of a scherzo, followied by… nothing. The music stopped abruptly as if Schubert had been interrupted mid-thought.

NEC's Piano Department marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Charles Ives with two programs of his works for piano. 

Tonight's program - '“Ives Extended” - includes The Celestial Railroad, the Set of Five Take-Offs, works by Carl Ruggles, Lou Harrison and Henry Cowell, and rarely heard music for two pianos in quarter-tones by Ives, David Fulmer, and Georg Haas.

The ETSO season concludes with the World Premiere of a piece commissioned by the orchestra. Written by Dr. Kyle Gullings, Associate Professor of Music Theory and Composition at UT Tyler, “Gridiron Symphony” celebrates the traditions surrounding the East Texas passion for high school football. The concert also features other sports-themed works, including Olympic-inspired pieces by John Williams, Vangelis’s popular theme from “Chariots of Fire,” and Charles Ives’s take on the Yale-Princeton football rivalry. The entire family will enjoy this uplifting end to the 2023/2024 season.

Isabel Valasek is a soprano based in Pittsburgh, PA. She is studying under Sari Gruber at Carnegie Mellon University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance, a certification in Music Education and a minor in Drama. This year in Carnegie Mellon Opera, Isabel performed as Lucy in “The Telephone” by Menotti and will also be in scenes such as singing Adele in “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II, Lucy in "The Three Penny Opera" by Kurt Weill and Idamante in “Idomeneo” by Mozart. She was previously a soloist in Carnegie Mellon University’s fully staged production of “Considering Matthew Shepard” by Craig Hella Johnson and was a cover for Despina in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”.

The concert will feature an exceptional program, including Charles Ives' "Central Park in the Dark" and Sofia Gubaidulina's "Concerto for Viola and Orchestra," framing the world premiere of Minas Bourbodakis' "sparks, waves and horizons for orchestra." This piece, commissioned by Bavarian Radio’s musica viva series with the support of the Freunde des BRSO e. V., promises to be a highlight of the evening. Additional works by Milica Djordjević, including "Mali svitac for orchestra" and "Čvor for winds, brass, piano, and percussion," will also be featured.

Under the baton of internationally acclaimed guest conductor Duncan Ward, with Lawrence Power on viola, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks will bring these innovative compositions to life. Join us for an enchanting evening of music with the Symphonic Band's second winter-quarter performance on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 7:30pm CST at the prestigious Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Under the baton of Shawn Vondran, this concert promises a journey through a diverse musical landscape, beginning with Charles Ives's "Variations on America," a witty rendition that infuses the patriotic tune with unexpected harmonies and playful rhythms.

The night continues with Roshanne Etezady's "Against the Rain," a poignant piece inspired by Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem "Love Is Not All," exploring the depths of love's sacrifices and sufferings. The first half concludes with David Maslanka's "Traveler," a reflection on life's adventures, moving from vibrant energy to serene contemplation.

The second half is dedicated to Zhou Tian's "Sinfonia," a 2022 composition drawing inspiration from a rich tapestry of cultural influences, including 1940s and '50s noir films, the bustling New York City subway, Shanghai's Mid-Autumn Festival, and the historic completion of the US's first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

New Music New England is a new initiative of the New England Philharmonic celebrating the new music works from New England. Each concert presents music by artists based in New England that have yet to be heard by the general public. This inaugural concert makes reference to the grand musical traditions of the region with Charles Ives’s Three Places in New England, together with music by Wang Lu, David Sanford, and Kati Agócs, which have yet to be heard in Boston. The concert’s grand finale features Grammy Award-winning organist Paul Jacobs in the long-awaited Boston premiere of John Harbison’s “What Do We Make of Bach!”

Junction Trio combines the talents of violinist Stefan Jackiw, cellist Jay Campbell, and pianist/composer Conrad Tao, each of whom have been celebrated as soloists performing around the world. “Watching the trio perform, one really couldn’t tell who was happier to be there—the rapt audience or the musicians... These three are onto something special” (The Boston Globe).

The opening work on this program immerses us in Ives’ haunting mini-philosophy-lesson about the universe and man’s eternal search for meaning in it. Three groups of players (a string orchestra, a solo trumpet, and a group of flutes) make their arguments with the inevitable conclusion. The Westerlies, an “arty quartet … mixing ideas from jazz, new classical, and Appalachian folk” (~ The New York Times) with a ferociously unique vision of brass—and yes, named for the prevailing west to east winds—blow in to play Conrad Tao’s Westerlies Concerto. And in a classy-brassy pivot, an ear-stretching take on Dvořák’s exuberant string quartet, especially arranged for the OPO and The Westerlies, is bound to please!

Balanchine’s deep affection for his adopted home animates this program of ballets all set to American music. Western Symphony is a vivacious suite of dances taking inspiration from the mythical Wild West. A similarly buoyant spirit infuses Stars and Stripes, with Balanchine seamlessly wedding classical steps with the rhythmic marches of John Philip Sousa, orchestrated by Hershey Kay. Tarantella employs a sprightly piece of music by Louis Moreau Gottschalk for a zesty and playful pas de deux that never fails to delight. Rounding out the program is The Unanswered Question from Ivesiana, a hypnotically alluring dance that captures the haunting, otherworldly music of Charles Ives.
