"Five Ways to Die" Opera Premiere

Join us for the world premiere of "Five Ways to Die," a groundbreaking opera event presented by Experiments in Opera. This unique performance is scheduled for an exclusive run from June 27, 2024, to June 30, 2024, at a venue that promises an intimate and immersive experience. The opera will be showcased on the following dates and times:

- Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 7:00 pm
- Friday, June 28, 2024, at 7:00 pm
- Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 7:00 pm
- Sunday, June 30, 2024, at 2:00 pm

"Five Ways to Die" is the latest creation from the minds within Experiments in Opera’s Writers’ Room, a program initiated in 2019 that fosters collaboration between composers and librettists. This opera challenges traditional notions of authorship by bringing together multiple composers and librettists to craft a large-scale work that reflects the values of inclusivity and community collaboration. Previous works from the Writers’ Room include "Sisyphus 2017," "Aqua Net & Funyuns 2020," and "Everything For Dawn 2022."

This opera features a chamber ensemble of five musicians and a cast of six singers, employing maximalist aesthetics to explore themes of poison, plague, magical portals, and the ever-present shadow of death. The performance will include contributions from the following segments:

- "Water Prayer" with libretto by Marcella Murray and composition by Seong Ae Kim
- "Valhalla Valley Mall" with both libretto and composition by Jason Cady
- "MISCHIEF or RATHATTAN" with libretto by Britt Hewitt and composition by Jesse Gelaznik
- "Serials Killers and The City" with libretto by Joanie Brittingham and composition by Del’Shawn Taylor

The talented cast includes Alize Rozsnyai and Rose Hegele as sopranos, Melisa Bonetti Luna and Lisa Neher as mezzo-sopranos, Kannan Vasudevan as tenor, and Seth Gilman as baritone. The musicians bringing this opera to life are Eileen Mack on clarinet/bass clarinet, James Moore on electric guitar, Tristan Kastin-Krause on acoustic/electric bass, Joe Bergen on vibraphone/percussion, and Matt Evans on drumset.

The production team is led by conductor Dmitry Glivinskiy and stage director Shannon Sindelar.

The inaugural concert of Boston’s brand new Pierrot ensemble, Der Gestanke, will feature vocalist Rose Hegele, flutist Hannah E. Tobias, clarinetist Walter Yee, violinist Brian Stuligross, cellist Ashtyn Brown, percussionist Wesley Fowler, and pianist Daniel Nerger. The performance will include world premieres by Spencer Winell and Nicholas Tran, as well as Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire.

Renowned Swiss ensemble Lugano Percussion presents a concert of music for large percussion by leading Swiss and Italian composers. They are joined by soprano Rose Hegele (M.M. '18) and percussion soloist Matt Sharrock (M.M. '11 and instructor of core studies), performing two previously unheard pieces by beloved Boston composer William Thomas McKinley.
