The intrepid orchestral ensemble The Knights continues its multi-year Rhapsody commissioning project, inspired by the centennial of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The Knights invite several of today’s most visionary composers to each create an original rhapsody, which artistic directors Colin Jacobsen and Eric Jacobsen describe as “one of the most ecstatically joyful expressions of art ... [a] combination of virtuosity, improvisation, and unfettered imagination.” In this program, pianist and master improviser Aaron Diehl joins the ensemble, conducted by Eric Jacobsen, in a world premiere by Michael Schachter, a new suite by Keith Jarrett and arranged by Michael P. Atkinson, and the rhapsodic Gershwin masterpiece. The orchestra also treats audiences to Beethoven’s exhilarating Fourth Symphony.

The is program pairs internationally acclaimed violinist Timothy Chooi with Ji Su Jung, the first percussionist ever to be awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant. The artists present a program ranging from Piazzolla to Romantic works by Schumann and Kreisler to modern perspectives including a work by Keith Jarrett, blending violin and keyboard-leaning marimba. The program culminates in Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz’ Atlas Pumas, written for violin and marimba, and inspired by a soccer match.

Maki Namekawa, an indefatigable interpreter of contemporary creation, is celebrated for her close collaboration with minimalist composer Philip Glass. In 2014, she recorded the first complete set of Glass's Études, receiving unanimous acclaim. Glass's Piano Sonata No. 1, written for Namekawa in 2019, marks 20 years of their artistic partnership. The program will also feature Keith Jarrett's Ritual (1977) with its strange yet lyrical ostinati and Chick Corea's captivating Children’s Songs, inspired by Bartók's Mikrokosmos.

Widely recognized for his dual career, John Storgårds both plays and conducts Beethoven’s composition of poignant lyricism and songlike eloquence as well as Keith Jarrett’s Elegy, which pushes the boundaries of what we think of as “classical.” In Sibelius’s Third Symphony, listen for his new approach to symphonic writing — “the crystallization of ideas from chaos,” he calls it, where fragments of melodies slowly begin to coalesce as the music proceeds, gathering energy and ending in a glorious C-Major chord.
