Finally making its PUC debut after a pandemic cancellation, the U.K.-based Doric Quartet has been at the helm of a new generation of string quartets, winning countless accolades for its riveting interpretations and inimitable sound. We will have the extraordinary opportunity to get to know these musicians through a new work specifically written for them by Australian composer Brett Dean—a musical exploration of what he describes as the “strangely fascinating and invariably unsettling political climate” of this decade. Yet the Doric Quartet has chosen to complement that work with Beethoven’s optimistic, whimsically exuberant Quartet Op. 18, No. 5, and Schubert’s hauntingly transcendent final quartet — a piece which the Brentano Quartet’s violinist Mark Steinberg once described as ending “with a feeling of acceptance and hope.” In the hands of these exceptional young players, our 130th Concert Classics series will end on a most poignantly uplifting note.

San Francisco Performances favorite Jonathan Biss returns with an ambitious and intriguing series of recitals that ask contemporary American composers of three generations to consider and musically respond to the legacy of Franz Schubert. Tyshawn Sorey (b. 1980) is “a composer of radical and seemingly boundless ideas” (Wall Street Journal) who often melds composition and improvisation.

Jonathan Biss’s boundless curiosity about humanity and art make him a thoughtful and compelling performer. He is known for assembling programs that plumb the depths of history, explore sparks of creativity and affirm the unity of shared experience. San Francisco Classical Voice called him, “a pianist whose probing, incisive, and deeply considered performances are consistently challenging and rewarding.

Barber’s whimsical Violin Concerto spotlights ESO Concertmaster Robert Uchida with poetic music that will sweep you off your feet. It’s a mystery why Schubert left his eighth symphony unfinished, although one historian claimed, “He could never have finished it because nothing could approach the originality, power, and skill of the first two movements.” On the other hand, Beethoven wrote four different overtures for his one opera, of which the third is the most impressive, and most popular.

The overture to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beloved opera, The Magic Flute, calls upon the power of truth, love and beauty to conquer the darkness while The Unanswered Question, Charles Ives’ riddle-like work, features a contemplative trumpet solo asking the “eternal question.” The Great Major C, Franz Schubert’s monumental symphony begins reverently before being enriched with many moments of ecstatic joy. Join Salastina for an unforgettable evening of classical music with "Main Series No. 5: Schubert and the Pummel of Hummel," a concert that promises to explore the arbitrariness of fame through the lens of two iconic composers. This unique event is set to take place on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 8:00 PM, and will continue through Sunday, June 16, 2024, with performances across various prestigious venues in West LA, Pasadena, and Orange County.

Dive into the historical rivalry between Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Franz Schubert, as Salastina recreates the famous 1819 concert where Hummel's world-premiere performance was overshadowed by Schubert's now-celebrated Trout Quintet. This concert is not just a musical journey but also a reflection on how history remembers art and artists. The program will feature Hummel's Piano Quintet Op. 87 and Schubert's Piano Quintet D 667 "The Trout," among other pieces, allowing the audience to judge for themselves the fairness of posterity.

The talented ensemble for the evening includes Salastina's Co-Artistic Directors and Violinists Kevin Kumar and Maia Jasper White, alongside Resident Artists Meredith Crawford (Viola), Yoshika Masuda (Cello), HyeJin Kim (Piano), Benjamin Smolen (Flute), and Brian Lauritzen (Host). 

The event will also offer a wine and munchies reception, providing a perfect opportunity for mingling and discussion among classical music enthusiasts. For those unable to attend in person, Salastina Members may enjoy a free livestream of the concert in the Members-Only Lounge, ensuring no one misses out on this extraordinary musical experience.

Appl was one of legendary German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s final students, and here he showcases his extraordinary artistry in Schumann’s complete Liederkreis, an arresting Gregorian chant, and moving works by Schubert, Monteverdi, Richard Strauss, and other masters.

The program features a diverse range of compositions, starting with Ysaÿe's Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Minor "Obsession," performed by the virtuoso Augustin Hadelich. Experience the intense narratives of Ravel's works and the whimsical charm of Martin Butler's Roald Dahl-inspired "Dirty Beasts," with a cast of talented musicians including Inon Barnatan (piano), Rose Lombardo (flute/piccolo), and many more.

A highlight of the evening will be the US Premiere of Thomas Adès' "Catch," showcasing the talents of Mark Simpson (clarinet), Alexi Kenney (violin), Jay Campbell (cello), and Thomas Adès himself on piano. The program also includes Saint-Saëns' iconic "Danse Macabre for Violin and Piano, Op. 40," bringing to life the playful yet haunting themes of the night.

The evening culminates with Schubert's profound "String Quartet in D Minor, D. 810 Death and the Maiden," performed by an ensemble of exceptional musicians including Andrew Wan and Tessa Lark on violins, Teng Li on viola, and Jonathan Swensen on cello.

This piano-trio program unfolds entirely in the key of E-flat Major—a key that often expresses grandeur and majesty. An internationally renowned lineup of artists comes together for this tender yet thrilling program.

This concert features five extraordinary artists, each celebrated for their virtuosity, and sought after for their performances around the world. Returning musicians include pianist Sterling Elliott, recipient of the Sphinx Organization’s 2024 Medal of Excellence and a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and cellist Nina Lee, a longtime member of the Brentano String Quartet. The Masterworks season opens with the TSO’s beloved concertmaster Lauren Roth performing Beethoven’s sublime Violin Concerto, a dramatic showpiece written during one of the most creative periods in the composer’s life. Antonio Sarrier’s Symphony in D from the 18th century was long-lost until its discovery in an archive in Mexico. Schubert’s dynamic third symphony continues the TSO’s journey to survey the composer’s full symphonic output.
