At the centre of the evening are two iconic cycles of piano literature: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, a masterpiece of baroque structure and contemplative stillness, and Frédéric Chopin’s 24 Préludes, an emotional mosaic – from floating melancholy to eruptive passion. Xi Zhai, who trained in Shanghai and Frankfurt, has established himself as a subtle interpreter with exceptional expressiveness. His playing, characterised by tonal clarity, stylistic finesse and technical elegance, always focuses on the essentials: revealing the inner content of the music. As a precursor to the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, this concert program will feature exclusively works by Polish composers as a tribute to the history and culture of our eastern neighbor. Almost 150 years lie between the creation of Chopin's early concert pieces for piano and orchestra and the symphonic poem "Krzesany" by Wojciech Kilar. What all three works have in common is their reference to Polish folklore. At the end of the program under the direction of Krzysztof Urbański is one of the most moving works of contemporary music, which many concertgoers will unconsciously or consciously recognize. In the early 1990s, the middle movement of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's emotionally gripping 3rd Symphony became a favorite of radio stations and was also used frequently in films and series. The composition, entitled "Symphony of Lamentations", sets Polish texts about motherhood, love and loss to music, including a medieval Marian lament, an Upper Silesian folk song from the time of the Polish uprisings and, last but not least, a prayer written on the wall in the basement of the Gestapo headquarters in Zakopane in 1944 by an 18-year-old prisoner.

Superstar pianist Lang Lang performs the solo piano version of one of Fauré’s most popular works, followed by Schumann’s eight-movement masterpiece – a staple of the Romantic repertoire that the composer once called his favourite. The evening culminates in music by Chopin, including a selection of his mazurkas in which he took Polish folk traditions and made them his own.

Experience the enchanting melodies of Easter Island's only professional classical musician, Mahani Teave, in her debut U.S. concert tour at the Perelman Performing Arts Center. This special performance took place on September 28th at 7:30 pm, marking a significant moment in the Opening Celebration of PAC NYC. Mahani Teave, an award-winning pianist known for her chart-topping debut album and her role as a pioneering artist and humanitarian, presented an evening filled with the works of Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, and featured premieres by Chilean composers José Miguel Tobar and Alejandro Arévalo.

The recital, which ran for 95 minutes including a 10-minute intermission, was not just a showcase of Teave's natural pianism and genuine virtuosity but also a journey through her sincere, pure, and magnificent artistry, as praised by BBC Music Magazine. The program was divided into two parts, featuring classics from Johann Sebastian Bach, Frederic Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Sergei Rachmaninov, alongside the ancestral melodies of Rapa Nui brought to life through Tobar's "I hē a Hotumatu’a" and Arévalo's "Suite Rapa Nui."

This event offered a Pay-What-You-Wish ticketing option, making it accessible for all to witness the breathtaking talent of Mahani Teave, whose performance not only captivated the audience but also highlighted her commitment to bridging the creative world with education and environmental activism.
