“Dreams and restless thoughts came flowing to me from the waters of the river. More and more, I became aware that the love shown to me by others would not ultimately be able to make me completely happy, to give me the peace and serenity that I long for so much.” (Hermann Hesse, “Siddhartha”)

Quadrophenia: A Mod Ballet

Theatre Royal Plymouth

Oliver Mears directs a new production of Bernstein’s operas in which one family’s fate becomes a microcosm for the troubled soul of America.

Trouble In Tahiti + A Quiet Place

Royal Opera House

In a dystopian future, women are forced into childbearing servitude by an extremist theocratic regime. Escape is nearly impossible—but Offred, a handmaid, is determined to find a way back to her child, no matter the cost.

Based on the landmark novel by Margaret Atwood, this intense operatic drama gives voice to a terrifying, fictional world that is becoming increasingly prescient.

The Handmaid's Tale

War Memorial Opera House

A murderous affair. Director Philipp Stölzl makes his Royal Opera debut with a playfully surreal new production, featuring costumes by Antony McDonald. Charles Castronovo, Malin Byström, Aleksei Isaev, Anita Rachvelishvili and Kseniia Nikolaieva star, with Jakub Hrůša conducting.

Un ballo in maschera

The performance of her life. In Oliver Mears’s acclaimed production, Aleksandra Kurzak returns to the title role alongside Saimir Pirgu as Cavaradossi and Christopher Maltman as Scarpia. Daniel Oren conducts.

Tosca

Raised in poverty, street singer Gioconda has always craved security. But now she craves something more. Oliver Mears's new staging transports the action to modern-day Venice. Antonio Pappano conducts a star cast including Anna Netrebko and Stefan Pop.

La Gioconda

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui was a teenager when his father died. Thirty years later, now a world-renowned choreographer, he searched in vain for his father’s grave in an overcrowded cemetery in Tangier. Today he continues to search for him in this very personal creation, developed in collaboration with the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève and Eastman.

La Monnaie - De Munt

Famous orchestral scores by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Benjamin Britten, and Bohuslav Martinů form the musical heart of this three-part ballet evening. "See the music, hear the dance"—this was the motto of George Balanchine, the founder of the New York City Ballet and a grand master of neoclassical dance. For him, dance was visual music and should lead the audience to hear it in a new and different way. With pure beauty and perfectly choreographed formations of dancers, Balanchine's legendary piece "Serenade" is breathtaking. Cathy Marston's choreography "Against the Tide" was created for London's Royal Ballet. For this piece, she explored Benjamin Britten's Violin Concerto and the background of its creation in 2025. Ballet Zurich will perform a piece by Justin Peck for the first time. In his "Paz de la Jolla," developed entirely in the spirit of Balanchine and set to music by Bohuslav Martinů, the resident choreographer of the New York City Ballet celebrates a Californian beach atmosphere.
