Tower Music is one of the oldest traditions at the Carmel Bach Festival. It began in 1936 with the Heralding Trombones, led by two generations of the Stewart Family, Chandler and son Gordon, and the trombone quartet opened every Festival in the early days. The Stewart Family performed well into the 1960’s until the Festival Orchestra brass section was asked to carry on the tradition as it does today. They played from the balcony window of the old Sunset Auditorium which opened onto the parking lot – the window is still there, overlooking the foyer – and from the Carmel Mission bell tower, thus earning the nickname “Tower Music.”

This special event, scheduled for May 20 & 21, 2024, at 5:30 PM, is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of American music, featuring compositions by renowned composers such as William Grant Still, Amy Beach, John Philip Sousa, and more.

The program includes an array of pieces that celebrate the diverse musical heritage of the Americas, from folk tunes to the intricate rhythms of jazz. Highlights include Still's evocative "Miniatures," Schuller's dynamic "Suite for Woodwind Quintet," Beach's pastoral "Op. 151," D’Rivera's vibrant "Aires Tropicales," and Sousa's iconic "The Liberty Bell March," all brought to life by the talented ASO musicians: Diva Goodfriend-Koven (flute), Erin Gustafson (oboe), David Gould (clarinet), David Smith (French horn), and Gilbert Dejean (bassoon).

This performance is part of a free chamber music series in partnership with Bryant Park, offering music lovers a chance to enjoy live music in a picturesque setting. Join the Confluence Chamber Orchestra for a mesmerizing journey back in time with "Meet Me in St. Louis," a special concert series celebrating the opening of the Missouri History Museum's new World’s Fair exhibit. This unique musical experience is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, 2024, at 2:30 pm, at the Missouri History Museum, located at 5700 Lindell Blvd., Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri.

Dive into the rich history of the 1904 World's Fair as our orchestra members, having delved into the museum’s archives, bring to life the works performed by famous musicians of that era. This concert will not only feature a captivating selection of music but also offer attendees a walking tour of the fair’s most exciting music venues, all set against a stunning backdrop of iconic photographs from 1904.

The program includes a variety of pieces that echo the spirit of the World's Fair, including "The Star Spangled Banner" by Vanderstucken, "The Louisiana March" by Wagner, "Grand March from Tannhauser" by Sousa, "The Liberty Bell March," "The Streets of Cairo aka the Hoochee Coochee Dance" by Johnson, "Saint Louis Fire Company Anniversary Parade March" by Mills and Sterling, "Meet Me in St. Louis" by Joplin, "The Cascades" by Foster, "The Social Orchestra" by Bizet, "Intermezzo from Carmen," "Zampa Overture" by Herold, "Havanaise" by Saint-Saens, and the "William Tell Overture" by Rossini.

Christopher Wheeldon’s Carnival of the Animals makes a welcome return to the repertory. An engagingly whimsical tale, with a libretto by the actor John Lithgow, the dance depicts a young boy who falls asleep in the Museum of Natural History, only to dream that the people in his life have taken animal shapes. Three varied Balanchine classics complete this family-friendly program: the lively pas de deux Tarantella; the effervescent Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, which showcases its dancers’ virtuosic technique; and the jubilant Stars and Stripes, Balanchine’s danced celebration of America and the march-master John Philip Sousa

The Cape Ann Symphony proudly presented the "Blazing Brass" concert, a spectacular showcase of brass music that took place on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at 3:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church. This exhilarating concert featured an ensemble of five talented musicians who took the audience on an unforgettable musical journey through the decades. The performance included a diverse repertoire, celebrating the works of George Cohan, Leonard Bernstein, and John Philip Sousa, among others.

The performers for this special event were Sammy Costa and Kurt Charles on trumpet, Earl Powers on horn, John Mitchell on trombone, and Rob Needs on tuba. Together, they delivered a powerful and dynamic performance that captivated the audience. The program for the concert was thoughtfully curated to include a mix of classic and contemporary pieces, such as "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" arranged by Gillis, "Amparito Roca" by Dalmau, "Ain’t Misbehavin’" arranged by Norris, and "Fairest of the Fair" by Sousa. Highlights also included selections from Bernstein's "West Side Story" and a George M. Cohan Medley arranged by Nagle, showcasing the versatility and range of the brass ensemble.

The "Blazing Brass" concert was part of the Cape Ann Symphony's "Musicians Unleashed" series, which aims to bring unique and innovative musical experiences to the community. This event not only provided an afternoon of outstanding music but also demonstrated the incredible talent and passion of the Cape Ann Symphony and its performers. Balanchine’s deep affection for his adopted home animates this program of ballets all set to American music. Western Symphony is a vivacious suite of dances taking inspiration from the mythical Wild West. A similarly buoyant spirit infuses Stars and Stripes, with Balanchine seamlessly wedding classical steps with the rhythmic marches of John Philip Sousa, orchestrated by Hershey Kay. Tarantella employs a sprightly piece of music by Louis Moreau Gottschalk for a zesty and playful pas de deux that never fails to delight. Rounding out the program is The Unanswered Question from Ivesiana, a hypnotically alluring dance that captures the haunting, otherworldly music of Charles Ives.

All Balanchine I

Our first triple bill of the season sets the stage with a playful look at classical ballet. Welch’s Tu Tu is full of agility and speed, with tongue-in-cheek choreography that showcases superb classical technique. Set to Ravel’s Concerto for Piano in G major, the dancers are outfitted in brilliantly colored costumes inspired by Gustav Klimt’s gold-hued paintings. Next, the Company adds a new Balanchine work to its repertoire with the Houston Ballet premiere of the iconic Stars and Stripes. In all-American costumes with exuberant patriotic touches, this classic Balanchine work is set to five rousing marches from composer John Phillip Sousa. The program is capped with a world premiere by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, a Colombian-Belgian choreographer who has created works for internationally renowned companies such as Dutch National Ballet, Scottish Ballet and Les Grand Ballet Canadiens. Her first commission for Houston Ballet, this new work is inspired by the life of the famous 20th century Uruguayan poet Delmira Agustini, known as one of the first female poets of the modernist era.

Michelle Cann returns to the Grant Park Orchestra after a dazzling debut in 2022. This time she plays George Gershwin's irresistible mashup of classical and jazz, Rhapsody in Blue. The concert includes Aaron Copland's timeless Variations on a Shaker Theme, and a piece inspired by Aaron Copland, the Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Joan Tower. “For Ed” is a heartfelt tribute concert honoring the remarkable 20-year legacy of Dr. Edward C. Harris, who served as music and artistic director of the San José Wind Symphony until his retirement in 2022. Under the direction of Dr. David Vickerman, the San José Wind Symphony will perform a program that reflects Dr. Harris' profound impact on the ensemble and its audiences. In honor of Ed's instrument, the concert features Steve Sanchez, clarinetist, performing Oscar Navarro's II Concerto. The concert also features some of Ed's favorite works for band, as we celebrate his passion, dedication, and the musical excellence he fostered. Join us for an afternoon of music and memories as we honor Dr. Harris and his extraordinary contributions to the San José Wind Symphony!
