Dance has a special significance in all cultures. With his Four Black American Dances, the American composer Carlos Simon shows how important dance is for the black communities in the USA in particular. Simon has chosen four examples: a ring shout, a waltz, a tap dance and finally a holy dance, in which the exuberant forms of expression of black Protestant denominations come to life. Equally gripping are Erwin Schulhoff’s Five pieces for string quartet, in which the Prague-born composer takes up fashionable dances of the 1920s. In the version for large orchestra by Manfred Honeck and Tomáš Ille, the rapid rush of sound in these miniatures is immediately captivating. Antonín Dvořák traveled from Prague to the USA in 1892 to help establish an original American art music. Not only did he give his Symphony No. 9 the title From the New World, he also incorporated harmonic and rhythmic elements from indigenous and black music cultures. Manfred Honeck, General Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart from 2007 to 2011, will return to the podium of the Staatsorchester Stuttgart as guest conductor for this concert.

The University of Michigan Symphony Band closes its season with a very special performance in conjunction with the North Central Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA). Collegiate musicians and teachers from across the Midwest will be in attendance for a concert that includes the talents and music of several U-M faculty members. New music from Composition professors Evan Chambers and Kristin Kuster will be joined by the consortium premiere of a brand new symphony by the lauded Mexican composer Arturo Marquez. Composers capture landscapes not with paints and brushes, but with instruments and notes. Today, you'll hear three of them bring to life the landscapes, traditions and myths of their homelands. Smetana's famous Má vlast (My Fatherland) is a tribute to his native Czech Republic. The colourful sounds of Vltava (The Moldau) are the most iconic, but the other symphonic poems likewise offer striking glimpses of the Bohemian landscape.

The Five Pieces for String Quartet were the work with which Erwin Schulhoff achieved his breakthrough in Salzburg in 1924. The dedication to his French colleague Darius Milhaud reveals what he was aiming for: the concise brevity of the movements, the suite-like sequence, and the aphoristic treatment of the material. The "Five Pieces" are primarily rhythmically inspired, which is probably why one review described them as "nice and lively dance pieces." One should not be fooled by this pleasantness: Schulhoff experiments ingeniously with motivic, metrical, and harmonic forms.

It was by no means just a chamber music appendage in an academy that included major orchestral works such as the C major piano concerto and the Symphony No. 1. When Beethoven presented new works for the first time on his own account in Vienna on April 2, 1800, the E-flat major septet was the longest item on the program. In his letter to the publisher, the composer pointed out that it was a work for seven full voices and not just a string quartet that could be supplemented by wind instruments. The septet became Beethoven's most popular work during his lifetime: it was not only played frequently, but also appeared in countless more or less authorized arrangements.

This Septet was by no means a mere appetiser at the mammoth premiere concert featuring large orchestral pieces such as the C major Piano Concerto and Symphony No. 1. When Beethoven himself first organised a self-financed Akademie concert in Vienna on 2 April 1800 to present his latest works, the E-flat major Septet was in fact the longest item on the programme. In a letter to his publisher, the composer stressed that this work contained seven fully independent parts and was not simply a string quartet with optional winds. The Septet became Beethoven’s most popular work during his lifetime: not only was it frequently performed, but it also appeared in countless official (and unauthorised) arrangements.

Since the four saxophonists repeatedly emphasize how much they have learned from the strings of the Artemis Quartet, we can look forward to their blown version of Dvořák's American string quartet. Erwin Schulhoff, who felt close to Dada, Communism and jazz, was very fond of the saxophone, and so the arrangement of his string pieces op. 14 is just as fitting as the tonal re-dedication of Ástor Piazzolla's Suite del Ángel . After all, Piazzolla is about angels dancing tango. And about an angel who dies (in the final movement, La Muerte del Ángel) – after a fugue, of all things…

The saxophone can do more than many people believe and know! Today it can be found in jazz and pop, but it was actually invented in the middle of the 19th century as a classical concert instrument: The Frenchman Adolphe Sax wanted to create a bridge between the supple sound of the clarinet and the piercing, nasal sound of the oboe. The Signum Saxophone Quartet features the four most common sizes, from soprano to baritone saxophone. Each instrument is unique, and four of them form a quartet that sometimes sounds like an entire orchestra. In its program for young audiences, whose works the ensemble has arranged for itself, the Signum Saxophone Quartet shows what it takes for instruments and musicians to come together.

Our honorary conductor Iván Fischer is a guarantee for unusual programmes. This time, he and the Konzerthausorchester will perform works by four composers who were ostracised and persecuted by the National Socialists and whose works shaped the avant-garde of the interwar period. Paul Hindemith, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler found their way to the United States via detours, but Erwin Schulhoff was interned in Prague, deported and died of tuberculosis in a camp in Bavaria.

The former Czechoslovakia has always been a breeding ground for string players and string quartets, in particular. Great quartets pop up there like mushrooms, and they don't all stick together. The Pavel Haas is the one of their generation that exceeds all. Founded by first violin Veronika Jaruskova, she leads them with grace and ferocity. They will play their countryman Schulhoff's ironic, jazzy, early Five Pieces for String Quartet, written 20 years before his death in a Nazi prison in 1941. They will also play Martiniu, who isn't played enough outside his homeland - these are the right ambassadors. Of course, the Tchaikovsky is irresistible.

The composer Korngold is remembered best for his film scores to silver-screen classics like The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood, but his concert works are also a testament to his prodigious talent. (He published the Piano Trio when he was only 13.) In this first FWSO Chamber Program, Korngold’s music appears alongside Mozart’s Serenade in C minor and a Divertissement by Schulhoff, whose music was buried by the Nazis but has been reemerging in recent years.

It conveys the causes, connections and consequences of the Nazi tyranny in a scientifically sound and didactically memorable way. Germany - a melting pot of cultures and religions for centuries! In the course of the turmoil of German history, where the darkness of the past has often wrestled with the light of the present, the sounds of memory still resonate in the most diverse forms and expressions. Among the artists who once shaped the cultural landscape, the names of Jewish composers rise up like gentle melodies in a stormy orchestra - their works and their biographies are in danger of being forgotten. And so it was above all the Jewish composers who were able to portray human existence in their multifaceted compositions, which tell of triumph and tragedy, of love and loss, of hope and despair. Their music is like a river that flows through the troubled waters of history and yet never loses its essence - a reflection of the soul. During the Nazi era in particular, artistic freedom was nipped in the bud and the sounds of Jewish composers had to give way - their music was defamed as "degenerate". Many Jewish composers were driven from their homeland, went into exile or died in concentration camps - leaving their music behind as silent witnesses to an immense tragedy. Despite the horror and destruction, the music of these brave artists survived like a tender seed rising from the rubble. In the post-war years and up to the present day, their music continues to resonate as a living legacy of a bygone era and a source of inspiration for future generations. This must be preserved. Composers such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Darius Milhaud and Erwin Schulhoff stand as symbols of human endurance and the unshakable belief in the power of art, even in the darkest hours. Their works remind us that music is more than just sound - it is a language that connects across borders, a bridge between past, present and future. In order to endure and come to terms with the repression, some Jewish composers used humor as a survival strategy, true to the motto "Joy in suffering". A special form of musical expression is Klezmer: Its roots go back to the music of the people of Israel in the time of the Old Testament, when instrumental music was used, among other things, to put priests into a kind of trance state. The "Klezmorim" were often traveling artists who played music at celebratory occasions such as weddings or at aristocratic festivals. Klezmer music is known for its lively and stirring melodies, which are often spiced with a pinch of humor and a melancholic undertone. The musicians often used improvisation to express their feelings and thoughts, and humor was an integral part of their performances.By using unusual harmonies, fast tempos and playful rhythms, Klezmer musicians were able to create an atmosphere of joy and laughter, even in the midst of difficult living conditions. One of the world's best Klezmer musicians is the clarinetist Helmut Eisel, who with his composition "Rhapsody for an Unknown Klezmer" commemorates the "Klezmorim" who were persecuted and murdered in the Holocaust and thus carries their traditional art into the future.

Combine these 20th-century works for two, three, and four musicians, and the result is an intriguing concert that expands horizons. Written in 1994, Jean Françaix’s lighthearted Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano is charming and witty. Folk and classical idioms intertwine in Erwin Schulhoff’s 1925 Duo for Violin and Cello, while Maurice Ravel’s revolutionary encounter with jazz reverberates throughout his electrifying second Sonata for Violin and Piano. The Borromeo String Quartet, heralded for their “edge-of-the-seat performances” (Boston Globe), takes on the intelligent intensity of the String Quartet No. 6 by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

The effects of war are profound and far-reaching. Such is the case with Erwin Schulhoff and André Caplet, whose lives changed drastically and were shortened by World Wars I and II. This concert pays tribute to their earlier work paired alongside an early work of Johannes Brahms — his titular Sextet No. 2 written at a time in his life marked by the sudden loss of his mother and a broken engagement to the singer Agathe von Siebold.

Career highlights include a performance of Penderecki's flute concerto under the baton of the composer, Bach’s B Minor suite with both Yannick Nézet-Seguin and Nicholas McGegan, the Ibert concerto with Juanjo Mena, Nielsen with Yan Pascal Tortelier and most recently the Mozart G major with Manfred Honeck. Upcoming highlights include performances of the Saariaho Flute Concerto entitled “Aile du Songe” with both the Pittsburgh Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra.

This concert offers a real discovery: the lively Concertino by Prague composer Erwin Schulhoff for the unusual combination of flute, viola and double bass. And Schulhoff was not the only one who liked this instrumentation. Milhaud's student Pierre Max Dubois also demonstrated how well the three instruments fit together. Also on the program: trios by Jean-Marie Leclair and Joseph Haydn in appropriate arrangements as well as solo and duo literature from the 1980s.

Renowned violinist Erin Keefe (’03), concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra and Curtis faculty member, joins dynamic conductor, clarinetist, and composer Osmo Vänskä and Curtis’s extraordinary emerging professional musicians for a tour of North America. Built around the octet version of Sibelius’s evocative tone poem En Saga, this eclectic program features cherished classics by Mozart and Sibelius, alongside striking early twentieth-century works such as Dohnányi’s string trio, Serenade in C major, and Schulhoff’s fiery, folk-influenced Concertino for flute, viola, and double bass.
