Season XIX concludes with Navarro’s joyful Downey Overture for Orchestra, Debussy’s gorgeous Nocturnes, and Rachmaninoff’s lush and dramatic Symphony No. 2. Guest conductor Marcelo Lehninger and the Tulsa Chorale will help us end the 2024-2025 season on a high note.

“For Ed” is a heartfelt tribute concert honoring the remarkable 20-year legacy of Dr. Edward C. Harris, who served as music and artistic director of the San José Wind Symphony until his retirement in 2022. Under the direction of Dr. David Vickerman, the San José Wind Symphony will perform a program that reflects Dr. Harris' profound impact on the ensemble and its audiences. In honor of Ed's instrument, the concert features Steve Sanchez, clarinetist, performing Oscar Navarro's II Concerto. The concert also features some of Ed's favorite works for band, as we celebrate his passion, dedication, and the musical excellence he fostered. Join us for an afternoon of music and memories as we honor Dr. Harris and his extraordinary contributions to the San José Wind Symphony!

From the passionate rhythms of Spain to the vibrant energy of American dance, this concert is a celebration of the joy found in making music in both traditional and contemporary works. Featured in this program will be Hispania by Oscar Navarro, March by Jennifer Jolley, along with many others that are sure to stir the soul.

Jump off your couch and run, don’t walk, to the symphony for a can’t miss Opening Night! We start with audience-favorite
Sorcerer’s Apprentice and an exquisite recent work for clarinet played by our own principal clarinetist, Trevor Stewart. Then we’ll blow the roof off the hall with the thrilling Pictures at an Exhibition, complete with the original artwork that inspired this masterpiece. You have to be there to see and hear it all!

This concert marks the final event in the Bakersfield Symphony 2021-2022 concert season, and it’s a performance you won’t want to miss.  The concert opens with Oscar Navarro’s oboe concerto Legacy, performed by our very own principal oboist, Laura Arganbright.  Laura will then rejoin the orchestra for the emotionally intense and beautiful Symphony No. 1 by Mahler, also known as Titan.

Steve Sanchez, captivating performer and virtuoso clarinetist, joins us for a season finale that packs a punch! The intensity and expression of Samuel Barber leads us into Óscar Navarro’s second clarinet concerto, which is truly cinematic in its scope and jazzy in its sensibilities. Pioneering American composer Amy Beach transports us through musical imagery and Scottish folk song to her Gaelic roots in Scotland. A dramatic finish to a beautiful season of music.
