Composer

From ragtime to music for ballet and film, this program showcases American music in a wide range of styles from four of its greatest composers: William Bolcom, an American icon as prolific as Mozart; Amy Beach, who broke the gender barrier with works of genius; Bernard Herrmann, a New York City wunderkind who took Hollywood by storm; and Aaron Copland, whose music personified the American spirit.

Generations of European classical music composers made their livelihoods at the behest of courtly patrons, developing their craft (and feeding their families) as they turned out countless scores for ballrooms, theaters, and chapels. Patronage played a role in American music, too—but here, the siren song of Hollywood arguably played a bigger role in how music developed in America. Studios offered handsomely paid work, while keeping the sounds of orchestral instruments in the ears of moviegoers who might never visit a concert hall. Composers like Bernard Hermann, Elmer Bernstein, and John Williams became household names, crafting timeless scores that would enter the concert-music canon. And few can match the extraordinary success achieved by the charismatic composer, pianist, and conductor Leonard Bernstein, who fused urban swagger with jazz and Latin dance music to create one of the 20th century’s most beloved works: West Side Story, a perennial hit on stage and screen.

Just in time for Halloween, you’ll experience this chilling classic with new eyes and ears as the orchestra performs the score live in sync with the big screen. Quite shocking at the time of its 1960 release, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho was the first “slasher” flick; it became a popular success and one of the most influential events in cinematic history, all the more remarkable because of its small budget. It was not only the performances by Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins which brought accolades, but also the groundbreaking music by Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, The Birds, Cape Fear). Like Hitchcock, Herrmann was an innovator who developed his own methods and language quite apart from the trusted conventions of Hollywood scoring.

Horrific beauty: The works in this concert program truly offer music to indulge in, all of them nostalgic echoes of the lush orchestral sounds of the late Romantic period. But beware: Abysses lurk beneath the harmonious facade... Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack to Alfred Hitchcock's legendary psychological thriller "Vertigo" sounds for long stretches – especially in the "love scene" – as if the composer had taken Richard Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde" further: pleading string gestures, sweeping harmonies, intoxicating crescendos. This music absolutely belongs on the concert stage! And only those who have the familiar images in mind must think of murder, possession, acrophobia, and perfidious deception...

The James Bond Experience: Music Behind The Man

Barnstable High School

Proudly featuring WMP artists, Crystal Lee and Heidi Sturniolo in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, our production of ‘Mozart and the Movies’ will be a crowd favorite! This concert brings to life many moments inspired by dramatic scenes in film such as Pulitzer Prize Winner, Caroline Shaw’s deeply-affecting Entr’acte for string orchestra which is a soulful work inspired by the classical traditions of Haydn. Shaw says, "I love the way some music (like the minuets of Haydn's Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition". For those drawn to mid-century Hollywood film, Bernard Hermann’s (composer extraordinaire) Scene d'Amour from 'Vertigo' is a lush, timeless classic sure to jog some movie memories. The program will conclude with Erich Korngold’s music from The Sea Hawk – a film score that continues to captivate listeners and bring audiences together for a heroic, victorious finale.

Korngold and the Hollywood Sound

Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center

Cinematic drama stalks through a concert that opens with Bernard Herrmann’s suite from his score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and continues with the luscious Romanticism of Korngold’s richly melodic Violin Concerto, for which the composer – a former child prodigy – borrowed themes from his own Golden Era Hollywood scores. No stranger to the stage, if not the screen, Prokofiev in his Third Symphony drew on music from his hypnotic Symbolist opera The Fiery Angel to create a work heavy with bells, cymbals, sinister dances and flashes of musical moonlight. Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno makes his Proms debut, leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
