Conductor Nicholas Hersh makes his Masterworks debut with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, “Reformation,” written to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, when Martin Luther established the Protestant Reformation. The world premiere of a Festival-commissioned work by composer Xinyang Wang, who draws equal inspiration from classical music and traditional Chinese arts, opens this program, which also features clarinetist Todd Levy in Academy Award–winning composer Bernard Herrmann’s quintet Souvenirs de Voyage, a cinematic journey through England, Ireland, and Italy.

Lights, Camera, Action – the LSO on Film

Celebrating the art form of film scoring and cinematic music, Guest violinist Charles Yang, recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award, has been described by the Boston Globe as one who “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star.” His amazing talent will be displayed through his performance of Kris Bowers’ For a Younger Self. The work explores the journey of a young protagonist as they overcome fear, stress, and self-doubt. The ASO will also perform works by John Williams, Herrmann, Korngold, and Schreker. Proudly featuring WMP artists, Crystal Lee and Heidi Sturniolo in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, our production of ‘Mozart and the Movies’ will be a crowd favorite! This concert brings to life many moments inspired by dramatic scenes in film such as Pulitzer Prize Winner, Caroline Shaw’s deeply-affecting Entr’acte for string orchestra which is a soulful work inspired by the classical traditions of Haydn. Shaw says, "I love the way some music (like the minuets of Haydn's Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition". For those drawn to mid-century Hollywood film, Bernard Hermann’s (composer extraordinaire) Scene d'Amour from 'Vertigo' is a lush, timeless classic sure to jog some movie memories. The program will conclude with Erich Korngold’s music from The Sea Hawk – a film score that continues to captivate listeners and bring audiences together for a heroic, victorious finale.

Chinese composer Tan Dun, Oscar winner for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, weaves athletic percussion and graceful melodies into his Double Concerto, featuring Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov and Daniel Hope. A celebration of the American West completes the program with a special arrangement of music by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.

 This spooky program, led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, begins with HK Gruber’s Frankenstein!!, a raucous and humorous work for orchestra and vocalist that merges genres from jazz to Viennese cabaret. Then, Bernard Herrmann’s legendary Suite from Psycho plunges into the darkest corners of the human psyche, mirroring the film’s infamous twists and turns. With pounding intensity and bleak foreboding, Béla Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin caps off the evening with a tale of fraud, seduction, and murder.

Hailed as "a band of world-class soloists...in which egos dissolve and players think, breathe and play as one" (Time Out New York), the Israeli Chamber Project is a dynamic ensemble comprising strings, winds, harp, and piano. Its performances have taken it from The Kennedy and Lincoln Centers to Tokyo's Suntory Hall and Wigmore Hall in London in programs that draw on repertoire from the Eighteenth Century to present day, including specially commissioned arrangements and original works.
