Conductor Nicholas Hersh makes his Masterworks debut with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, “Reformation,” written to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, when Martin Luther established the Protestant Reformation. It includes the famous Dresden Amen. A noted arranger, Hersh introduces the first performance of his own orchestration of Clara Schumann’s piano collection “4 Pièces caractéristiques.”

The first half of the concert is a tribute to the pioneering women of electronic music, Delia Derbyshire and Wendy Carlos, with performances of synth-heavy, sci-fi movie soundtracks. Highlights include Wendy Carlos's Moog-overdubbed Bach arrangements and the score for Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The program also features pieces like Bernard Herrmann's Fahrenheit 451 Suite, Charles Ives's The Unanswered Question, and themes from iconic films and TV shows such as John Carpenter's Escape from New York, Vangelis's Chariots of Fire, and the Doctor Who theme by Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire.

Adding a unique twist, the concert includes the London premiere of Will Gregory’s suite for synths and orchestra, Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project. This performance is enhanced by the presence of Matt Parker, a renowned stand-up mathematician, who blends comedy with mathematical insights, creating an engaging and educational experience. This event promises a captivating journey through the retro-futurist world of electronic music, celebrating its rich history and innovative future.

For the third year in a row, the American Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to kick off our season in the lush surroundings of Bryant Park. "Beyond the Hall" invites audiences to explore music beyond the traditional concert hall setting, featuring an eclectic mix of compositions. From Florence Price's vibrant "Suite of Dances" to the theatrical melodies of Weill's "Threepenny Opera," from Scott Joplin's operatic "Treemonisha" to Bernstein's lively "On the Town," and the haunting strains of Herrmann's "Psycho," this program promises to captivate with its exploration of music's dramatic and diverse roles across various venues and genres.

Bryant Park enhances the experience by offering hundreds of free picnic blankets, comfortable bistro chairs, and a curated selection of food and drink available for purchase from local vendors. With no tickets required and no lines for entry, attendees are welcomed to a hassle-free and immersive musical evening.

Celebrating the art form of film scoring and cinematic music, Guest violinist Charles Yang, recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award, has been described by the Boston Globe as one who “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star.” His amazing talent will be displayed through his performance of Kris Bowers’ For a Younger Self. The work explores the journey of a young protagonist as they overcome fear, stress, and self-doubt. The ASO will also perform works by John Williams, Herrmann, Korngold, and Schreker. This concert brings to life many moments inspired by dramatic scenes in film such as Pulitzer Prize Winner, Caroline Shaw’s deeply-affecting Entr’acte for string orchestra which is a soulful work inspired by the classical traditions of Haydn. Shaw says, "I love the way some music (like the minuets of Haydn's Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition". For those drawn to mid-century Hollywood film, Bernard Hermann’s (composer extraordinaire) Scene d'Amour from 'Vertigo' is a lush, timeless classic sure to jog some movie memories. The program will conclude with Erich Korngold’s music from The Sea Hawk – a film score that continues to captivate listeners and bring audiences together for a heroic, victorious finale.

Cinematic drama stalks through a concert that opens with Bernard Herrmann’s suite from his score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and continues with the luscious Romanticism of Korngold’s richly melodic Violin Concerto, for which the composer – a former child prodigy – borrowed themes from his own Golden Era Hollywood scores. No stranger to the stage, if not the screen, Prokofiev in his Third Symphony drew on music from his hypnotic Symbolist opera The Fiery Angel to create a work heavy with bells, cymbals, sinister dances and flashes of musical moonlight. Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno makes his Proms debut, leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
