Kerson Leong, who dazzled TSO audiences in 2022, returns to perform Korngold’s romantic Violin Concerto, written during his Hollywood years and first performed by the great Jascha Heifetz. The Hollywood-themed first half begins with Bernard Herrmann’s iconic music for the film Psycho. Conductor Nicholas Hersh makes his Masterworks debut with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, “Reformation,” written to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, when Martin Luther established the Protestant Reformation. It includes the famous Dresden Amen. A noted arranger, Hersh introduces the first performance of his own orchestration of Clara Schumann’s piano collection “4 Pièces caractéristiques.”

Celebrating the art form of film scoring and cinematic music, Guest violinist Charles Yang, recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award, has been described by the Boston Globe as one who “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star.” His amazing talent will be displayed through his performance of Kris Bowers’ For a Younger Self. The work explores the journey of a young protagonist as they overcome fear, stress, and self-doubt. The ASO will also perform works by John Williams, Herrmann, Korngold, and Schreker. Proudly featuring WMP artists, Crystal Lee and Heidi Sturniolo in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, our production of ‘Mozart and the Movies’ will be a crowd favorite! This concert brings to life many moments inspired by dramatic scenes in film such as Pulitzer Prize Winner, Caroline Shaw’s deeply-affecting Entr’acte for string orchestra which is a soulful work inspired by the classical traditions of Haydn. Shaw says, "I love the way some music (like the minuets of Haydn's Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition". For those drawn to mid-century Hollywood film, Bernard Hermann’s (composer extraordinaire) Scene d'Amour from 'Vertigo' is a lush, timeless classic sure to jog some movie memories. The program will conclude with Erich Korngold’s music from The Sea Hawk – a film score that continues to captivate listeners and bring audiences together for a heroic, victorious finale.

From the ominous fog horns of the San Francisco Bay in Hitchcock’s Vertigo to the chaotic city streets of Gershwin’s An American in Paris, New Century puts you at the heart of the drama with a selection of music from iconic films. Chinese composer Tan Dun, Oscar winner for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, weaves athletic percussion and graceful melodies into his Double Concerto, featuring Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov and Daniel Hope. A celebration of the American West completes the program with a special arrangement of music by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.

 This spooky program, led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, begins with HK Gruber’s Frankenstein!!, a raucous and humorous work for orchestra and vocalist that merges genres from jazz to Viennese cabaret. Then, Bernard Herrmann’s legendary Suite from Psycho plunges into the darkest corners of the human psyche, mirroring the film’s infamous twists and turns. With pounding intensity and bleak foreboding, Béla Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin caps off the evening with a tale of fraud, seduction, and murder.

The opening concert of the Charleston Symphony Pops season will commemorate timeless music from classic movies such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s (“Moon River”), Dances with Wolves, The Wizard of Oz, Vertigo, Titanic and the renowned musicals West Side Story and La La Land.

Known for his memorable and award-winning film scores, legendary composer and conductor John Williams celebrated his 90th birthday in 2022. This concert will feature music from Williams’ film score from Lincoln and Jurassic Park.

With an affinity for both jazz and classical, Aaron Diehl brings his imaginative and elegant approach to Gershwin’s much-loved Rhapsody in Blue. Bramwell Tovey leads Gershwin’s An American in Paris, which inspired the 1951 film, plus classic film scores by Bernard Herrmann.

Then hear how Tchaikovsky captures the essence of Romeo and Juliet’s tragic love story without using a single word. And finally, Rachmaninoff’s cinematic Third Symphony.

Get ready for an evening where cinematic drama and symphonic grandeur collide. The night opens with Bernard Herrmann’s suspenseful Psycho: A Short Suite, arranged by Palmer. Violinist Nancy Zhao then takes center stage for Korngold’s lush and romantic Violin Concerto. The evening concludes with Strauss’ awe-inspiring tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra, famously immortalized in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
