The centerpiece of this program is the Quartetto Concertante, op 55, by Pedro Ximenez Abrill Tirado (1784-1856), the most prolific South American composer of the first half of the 19th century. Ximenez, born in Peru during the independence movement that led to the country’s founding, hosted a famous salon at his home that was celebrated by artists and revolutionaries alike. At the invitation of the Bolivian president in 1833, Ximenez became Maestro de Capilla in Sucre, the Bolivian capital, a post he held until his death. The Valencia Baryton Project has dedicated itself to the performance of music written for an ancient and little-known instrument, the baryton. A cross between the viola da gamba and lirone, with 10 resonating and plucked strings down the back of the instrument, the baryton gives the traditional string trio an entirely new dimension.

Jorge Vera started his musical journey in his hometown, Pirayú (Paraguay), thanks to a social program named Sonidos de la Tierra, and years later, at the Escuela Musical Miranda. In 2017, he was part of the Youth-Classics Orchestra in Switzerland and the European tour with the baroque orchestra Sonidos de Paraqvaria. Moreover, he was part of several music festivals in South America. Jorge was a prize winner at the First Violin Competition in Paraguay, the Chamber Music Competition Lorenzo Livieres Banks, and the Golden State International Music Competition. His commitment to making music education available to everyone took him to rural areas in the countryside of Paraguay to teach violin for seven years, where he additionally was a conductor of the Orquesta Juvenil Ovetense. Currently, Jorge is studying with Professor William van der Sloot in the Master of Music Performance program at the Carnegie Mellon School of Music.

With their “polished sonority and well-balanced, tightly synchronized ensemble” (Chicago Classical Review), the young Isidore Quartet has swiftly soared to prominence, winning the 2022 Banff Competition and a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant. Now, they present a new work written for them by foremost American composer and Grammy-winning jazz pianist Billy Childs. Jeremy Denk, “a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs” (The New York Times) joins them for Schumann’s expansive Piano Quintet.

Our season concludes with music that inspires peace and hope in times of upheaval and uncertainty. The tranquility of the English countryside in The Banks of Green Willow, Silvestrov's serene and meditative prayer for Peace in Ukraine, and the sacred a cappella choruses of The Peaceable Kingdom lead us to Haydn's powerful and climactic choral work. Widely acknowledged as a call for peace, the jubilant finale reflects strength and hope.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, directed by Nicholas Quardokus, will join the CSO and talented soloists for this uplifting season finale concert weekend. Haydn’s “London” Symphony and Dvořák’s Te Deum are also included in the roster of music from renowned composers.

The New School

The season closes with the Katarina String Quartet, 2025 Grand Prize winner of the Fischoff Competition. Selected by curating/performing ensemble Ulysses Quartet, the Katarina will perform works by Vivian Fung and Franz Joseph Haydn, and be joined by the Ulysses Quartet in a performance of Felix Mendelssohn's Octet.
