Two musical Dames at the very tops of their respective professions – Dame Sarah Connolly received The King’s Medal for Music in 2023, whilst Dame Imogen Cooper received the late Queen’s Medal for Music in 2019 – once again join together in recital as they previously have to considerable acclaim at such venues as the Cheltenham Festival and the Oxford International Song Festival. ‘The warm relationship between both performers came across in their performance and the audience was delighted’, wrote the Henley Standard. The programme includes songs both familiar and unfamiliar , including Loewe’s setting of texts better known from Schumann and examples by the neglected Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck.

We open our 2024/25 season with a portrait of one of the most misunderstood pioneers of the early 20th-century avant-garde. Arnold Schoenberg's early works such as his Chamber Symphony, written in 1906, expanded the lush harmonies of late Romanticism to the extent that it scandalised audiences and incited them to riot at the strange physicality of the sounds they were hearing.

In the first of four concerts directed by Maria Włoszczowska in her new role as Artistic Partner, Rebecca Bottone joins musicians from Royal Northern Sinfonia in Sage Two. You might remember Rebecca from our Viennese New Year’s Day Concert 2023.

Experience the legendary dramatic prowess of The Met Orchestra in the historic splendor of Carnegie Hall. In the first of three performances this season, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the orchestra are joined by soprano Lise Davidsen, who debuted at the Met Opera in 2019 in the lead role of The Queen of Spades. The concert begins with Webern’s reimagining of J. S. Bach’s six-part fugue, followed by Wesendonck Lieder, which include some of Wagner’s most popular non-operatic songs. The second half of the concert comprises Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a work close to Nézet-Séguin. “What is orchestral music? Here’s the example … it’s a symphony that has everything,” he recently told WRTI.

Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in a captivating Sunday matinee performance, featured as part of Carnegie Hall’s Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice festival. Prokofiev’s Second Symphony was his work of “iron and steel,” and it suggests the wonderment, scope, and brutal machinery of 1920s technological advancements. It is carefully paired with Webern’s miniature Symphony, Op. 21, a sparse and exacting piece in which “every note has so much meaning and is completely indispensable,” according to Welser-Möst. The concert concludes with Prokofiev’s Fifth, an enduring symphonic favorite that was written during the summer of 1944.

When the Fifth was premiered in the US, Prokofiev’s picture graced the cover of Time magazine, and the magazine’s lengthy profile of him quoted Koussevitzky’s assessment: “[The Fifth Symphony is] the greatest musical event in many, many years. The greatest since Brahms and Tchaikovsky! It is magnificent! It is yesterday, it is today, it is tomorrow.”

The Alexander String Quartet and Robert Greenberg look back 100 years to the tumultuous social and political era of the early 20th century—times not unlike our own—and explore enduring works of the great music it produced. Programs will include works by Debussy, Ravel, Webern, Schoenberg, Sibelius, and Nielsen. 

As Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lay on his own deathbed, he sketched out the broad outlines of his Requiem in 1791. He still managed to put the work’s phenomenal choral parts and basso continuo accompaniment on paper. Before he can orchestrate the music, the composer died. Yet the requiem has survived Mozart thanks to his former pupil and colleague, Frans Xaver Süßmayr. Indeed, he made sure to complete the work, to the liking of his master. Based on the surviving material and Süßmayr’s knowledge of Mozart’s composing, it is as if he brought him back to life.

Music and architecture share a vocabulary and they overlap through analogies and metaphors. Composers "build" symphonies, which are highly structured. And architects dream of buildings that unfold to the senses like music, a seamless flow of experience through time and space. Both forms use terms like ornament, balance and symmetry. But is architecture really "frozen music," an idea that emerged in the late 18th century when musical forms were becoming longer and more complex?

Bouncing Off the Walls: Music and Architecture

Schoenberg revered Wagner whose piano Elegy introduces the expressionist moods of Three Piano Pieces, Op. 11, Schoenberg’s first important piano work. The passion of Berg’s Piano Sonata Op. 1, a single movement ripe with Wagnerian chromaticism follows. Lyris Quartet performs Webern’s zingy Five Pieces of String Quartet. Then Jacaranda Chamber Ensemble, with David Bloom conducting, gives the world premiere of Peter Knell’s Arkhipov Synthesis, based on his gripping tale of apocalypse averted. This program is part of the California Festival: A Celebration of New Music — 100+ music institutions showcase forward-looking voices with new works written within the past five years.

The third of 16 planned concerts and four events, Perilous Balance sees three young composers respond to Arnold Schoenberg’s groundbreaking Three Piano Pieces, Op. 11 with three brand new compositions. Also premiering is Peter Knell’s orchestral synthesis of ARKHIPOV, his gripping two-act opera depicting a Soviet submarine run amok. Among its musical arsenal, Arkhipov Synthesis uses a key technique invented by Schoenberg. Additionally, Tomas Peire Serrate's Awake reconsiders Schoenberg’s famous “Pierrot ensemble” with a fresh approach.

The University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra (UISO) is the School of Music's premier orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra performs major literature from the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Musicians in the orchestra consist of the finest students in the School of Music, as well as exceptionally talented non-majors from across the University of Illinois campus.
