A major chapter in string quartet history is coming to a close: After more than 40 years as an ensemble, the Hagen Quartet is entering its final season. They bring a program to the Elbphilharmonie that revives the highlights of recent decades with works by Mozart, Schubert, and Weber.

Described by Strad Magazine as being, “vigorous, extrovert and emphatic players with a vitality all their own,” the Nisaika Quartet’s origins go back to the 1980s at the Curtis Institute of Music. Four chamber-music-hungry friends and classmates, coached by Karen Tuttle and Felix Galimir, went on to win Deuxième Prix at the 8e Concours International de Quatuors à Cordes, a moment described as one of the greatest adventures of their musical lives. After finishing their undergraduate studies, this group of tenacious young musicians went their separate ways to pursue graduate and job opportunities, but always found themselves connected through the years. Now, after more than four decades and four illustrious careers as performers and pedagogues, the Nisaika Quartet reunites for a very special performance, featuring works by Webern, Beethoven, Puccini and Brahms.

Klas Torstensson’s magnificent opera The Expedition tells the story of Andrée’s ill-fated Arctic journey – a subject that has fascinated Torstensson since his early teens. We hear Intermezzo and Epilogue from the opera – two sections that vividly reflect the contrasts in his music. The beautiful epilogue, a kind of aria based on letters and diary entries, comes strikingly close to Puccini in its lyrical depth.

"Way back in the late 1950s I was a member of a large, self-governed chamber group called the Gramercy Chamber Ensemble. The group had strings, winds, brass, piano, and singers, and selected repertory during group meetings. One of the members blurted out that we should do this amazingly original work called Pierrot Lunaire. 'What is Pierrot Lunaire?' was the response of the members. One year and fifty rehearsals later we were mesmerized and excited by this work and desperate to perform it.

Yunchan Lim, who at 18 became the youngest-ever winner of the Van Cliburn Competition, climbs the summit of Baroque keyboard music in Bach’s Goldberg Variations. A miraculous series of 30 transformations on a single theme — ranging from the contemplative to the euphoric — the Goldbergs are a showcase for Bach’s prismatic range and imagination.

The Five Pieces for String Quartet were the work with which Erwin Schulhoff achieved his breakthrough in Salzburg in 1924. The dedication to his French colleague Darius Milhaud reveals what he was aiming for: the concise brevity of the movements, the suite-like sequence, and the aphoristic treatment of the material. The "Five Pieces" are primarily rhythmically inspired, which is probably why one review described them as "nice and lively dance pieces." One should not be fooled by this pleasantness: Schulhoff experiments ingeniously with motivic, metrical, and harmonic forms.

The young dynamic Viano Quartet traces the evolution of the string quartet, from classical elegance to modern complexity. It opens with Haydn’s Quartet in D Major, Hob. Next is Mendelssohn’s Quartet in D Major, Op. 44, No. 1, blending lyrical beauty with energetic drive, showcasing the composer’s Romantic expressiveness.

“As a young man I participated in an ensemble called the Gramercy Chamber Ensemble. It was a rather unwieldy group that had a full complement of strings, winds, brass, percussion, singers, and a pianist. We chose repertoire by consensus. When one of the members mentioned a work called Pierrot lunaire there were puzzled faces all around. When he described an orchestration consisting of flute-piccolo, violin-viola, clarinet-bass clarinet (each pair of these instruments played by one person), cello, piano, and a singer who did not really sing but performed a hybrid of singing and speaking on pitch, we were really perplexed.

The 2024/2025 season traditionally concludes with Music Director and Chief Conductor Emmanuel Villaume. The evening's honored solo position will be taken by outstanding violinist Romana Špačková, Prague Philharmonia's long-standing concertmaster.

The evening opens with Anton Webern's Passacaglia, an early work combining strong Romantic influences with experimental tendencies. The epic arch of this Baroque-inspired variation form sets the stage for the dramatic atmosphere of the early 20th century, which we'll fully explore in Dmitri Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor. The post-war period during which the concerto was written marked another turbulent phase in the composer's life, as he faced intense criticism of his work and political persecution.

“Ground-breaking implosions of the musical language of their time” – while being dismissed in their day at the dawn of the 20th century, the compositions of Schoenberg and Webern nowadays are understood as important milestones of music history, which also have a lasting influence on contemporary composers such as Enno Poppe and Beat Furrer.

Moments after becoming the youngest musician to ever win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Yunchan Lim shared that the next piece he intended to learn for performance was J. S. Becoming aware of this can be comforting and dealing with these emotions can even have a healing effect. Peter Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony is pain turned into sound and the expression of a deep personal crisis: his unhappy marriage plunged the homosexual composer into depression, and death seemed to him the only way out.

Considered a “brilliant musician and an extraordinary visionary” (The Wall Street Journal), French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard enjoys an internationally celebrated career. As a master performer of Beethoven, Aimard recorded Beethoven’s entire catalogue of piano concertos and both the “Hammerklavier” Sonata and “Eroica Variations.” He is widely acclaimed as a key figure in the music of our time and has had close collaborations with many leading composers including György Ligeti, whose complete works for piano he has recorded. We can only imagine how much courage, self-confidence and steadfastness the African-American Julia Perry had to muster on her way to becoming a composer, at a time when the doors of classical music were not open to women or people of color. And yet she pursued her goal unswervingly, studying first with Luigi Dallapiccola and later with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Her career began in 1951 with the "Stabat Mater", but it was never given the attention it deserved. A fate that Florence Price had already suffered at the end of the 19th century. She was also a woman and an African-American - and, against all odds, managed to compose an impressive number of around 300 compositions. And a century earlier, Joseph Bologne also had to struggle with racism and discrimination, for he was born in Guadeloupe to a slave and a French nobleman and was later admired at the court of Paris as the "black Mozart". With Brandon Keith Brown, the conductor is vehemently committed to ensuring that people of color, both past and present, are finally given the attention they deserve. As part of the "New Ways" project "Music-Axis-Times", the concert aims to help finally establish this repertoire that has been suppressed for too long and to give people of color a visible place on the stage.

Anton Webern came up with the idea of ​​a string quartet in 1905 during a hiking holiday with his cousin Wilhelmine Mörtl, with whom he had fallen madly in love and whom he married in 1911. The work remained a fragment, and Webern only completed the slow movement. This is almost orchestral in nature, the harmony largely tonal, even though Webern certainly explores its limits - but always with references to the sound world of late Romanticism.

The program — led by Karina Canellakis, also in her NY Phil debut — begins with Webern’s remarkably spare, yet haunting Six Pieces. The concert’s two tone poems look past earthly life: Richard Strauss’s meditation on the death of an artist, and Scriabin’s mystical and rhapsodic Poem of Ecstasy.

“Caution – Musicians at Play” reads a large, hand-painted sign on the rural Vermont hilltop where, each summer, musicians from all over the world come together to study and rehearse beloved and less-known chamber works. The third Marlboro touring ensemble of this season offers a richly varied program that begins with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s harmonically beguiling Five Fantasiestücke and concludes with Arnold Schoenberg’s intense, enthralling Verklärte Nacht.
