Klas Torstensson’s magnificent opera The Expedition tells the story of Andrée’s ill-fated Arctic journey – a subject that has fascinated Torstensson since his early teens. We hear Intermezzo and Epilogue from the opera – two sections that vividly reflect the contrasts in his music. The beautiful epilogue, a kind of aria based on letters and diary entries, comes strikingly close to Puccini in its lyrical depth.

"Way back in the late 1950s I was a member of a large, self-governed chamber group called the Gramercy Chamber Ensemble. The group had strings, winds, brass, piano, and singers, and selected repertory during group meetings. One of the members blurted out that we should do this amazingly original work called Pierrot Lunaire. 'What is Pierrot Lunaire?' was the response of the members. One year and fifty rehearsals later we were mesmerized and excited by this work and desperate to perform it.

The Five Pieces for String Quartet were the work with which Erwin Schulhoff achieved his breakthrough in Salzburg in 1924. The dedication to his French colleague Darius Milhaud reveals what he was aiming for: the concise brevity of the movements, the suite-like sequence, and the aphoristic treatment of the material. The "Five Pieces" are primarily rhythmically inspired, which is probably why one review described them as "nice and lively dance pieces." One should not be fooled by this pleasantness: Schulhoff experiments ingeniously with motivic, metrical, and harmonic forms.

“As a young man I participated in an ensemble called the Gramercy Chamber Ensemble. It was a rather unwieldy group that had a full complement of strings, winds, brass, percussion, singers, and a pianist. We chose repertoire by consensus. When one of the members mentioned a work called Pierrot lunaire there were puzzled faces all around. When he described an orchestration consisting of flute-piccolo, violin-viola, clarinet-bass clarinet (each pair of these instruments played by one person), cello, piano, and a singer who did not really sing but performed a hybrid of singing and speaking on pitch, we were really perplexed.

The 2024/2025 season traditionally concludes with Music Director and Chief Conductor Emmanuel Villaume. The evening's honored solo position will be taken by outstanding violinist Romana Špačková, Prague Philharmonia's long-standing concertmaster.

The evening opens with Anton Webern's Passacaglia, an early work combining strong Romantic influences with experimental tendencies. The epic arch of this Baroque-inspired variation form sets the stage for the dramatic atmosphere of the early 20th century, which we'll fully explore in Dmitri Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor. The post-war period during which the concerto was written marked another turbulent phase in the composer's life, as he faced intense criticism of his work and political persecution.

Peter Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony is pain turned into sound and the expression of a deep personal crisis: his unhappy marriage plunged the homosexual composer into depression, and death seemed to him the only way out.

As a master performer of Beethoven, Aimard recorded Beethoven’s entire catalogue of piano concertos and both the “Hammerklavier” Sonata and “Eroica Variations.” He is widely acclaimed as a key figure in the music of our time and has had close collaborations with many leading composers including György Ligeti, whose complete works for piano he has recorded. We can only imagine how much courage, self-confidence and steadfastness the African-American Julia Perry had to muster on her way to becoming a composer, at a time when the doors of classical music were not open to women or people of color. And yet she pursued her goal unswervingly, studying first with Luigi Dallapiccola and later with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Her career began in 1951 with the "Stabat Mater", but it was never given the attention it deserved. A fate that Florence Price had already suffered at the end of the 19th century. She was also a woman and an African-American - and, against all odds, managed to compose an impressive number of around 300 compositions. And a century earlier, Joseph Bologne also had to struggle with racism and discrimination, for he was born in Guadeloupe to a slave and a French nobleman and was later admired at the court of Paris as the "black Mozart". With Brandon Keith Brown, the conductor is vehemently committed to ensuring that people of color, both past and present, are finally given the attention they deserve. As part of the "New Ways" project "Music-Axis-Times", the concert aims to help finally establish this repertoire that has been suppressed for too long and to give people of color a visible place on the stage.

Anton Webern came up with the idea of ​​a string quartet in 1905 during a hiking holiday with his cousin Wilhelmine Mörtl, with whom he had fallen madly in love and whom he married in 1911. The work remained a fragment, and Webern only completed the slow movement. This is almost orchestral in nature, the harmony largely tonal, even though Webern certainly explores its limits - but always with references to the sound world of late Romanticism.

Imperial Theatre

Catalyst Quartet makes its exciting Fortas series debut. Founded by the Sphinx Organization in 2010, the ensemble has been praised for its “perfect ensemble unity” and “unequaled class of execution” (Lincoln Journal Star). Building its programs and projects around a belief in the unifying power of music, the group acts as a catalyst—redefining and reimagining the classical music experience. The ensemble brings this mission and compelling new music to the relaxed lounge setting of the Club at Studio K.

“Caution – Musicians at Play” reads a large, hand-painted sign on the rural Vermont hilltop where, each summer, musicians from all over the world come together to study and rehearse beloved and less-known chamber works. The third Marlboro touring ensemble of this season offers a richly varied program that begins with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s harmonically beguiling Five Fantasiestücke and concludes with Arnold Schoenberg’s intense, enthralling Verklärte Nacht.

Celebrating its seventh decade of performances, the Musicians from Marlboro are praised for their joyous and thoroughly prepared performances. The Washington Post calls them “so fresh and full-blooded, so full of earthy vitality and sheer sensual pleasure, that it made you happy to be alive.”

In collaboration with Music for Food, Musicians from Marlboro present a concert of Coleridge-Taylor, Dvořák, Webern, and Schoenberg in support of local hunger initiatives. General admission tickets are $30, available for purchase on Marlboro’s website, and additional donations will be accepted online and at the door. 100% of donated proceeds will go to Women’s Lunch Place.

Simone Young conducts music by three composers at the peak of their creative power: Johann Sebastian Bach's Ricercar, arranged by Anton Webern, Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto with soloist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Johannes Brahms' Symphony no. 3.

Experience the legendary dramatic prowess of The Met Orchestra in the historic splendor of Carnegie Hall. In the first of three performances this season, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the orchestra are joined by soprano Lise Davidsen, who debuted at the Met Opera in 2019 in the lead role of The Queen of Spades. The concert begins with Webern’s reimagining of J. S. Bach’s six-part fugue, followed by Wesendonck Lieder, which include some of Wagner’s most popular non-operatic songs. The second half of the concert comprises Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a work close to Nézet-Séguin. “What is orchestral music? Here’s the example … it’s a symphony that has everything,” he recently told WRTI.

Symphony Hall in Birmingham

Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in a captivating Sunday matinee performance, featured as part of Carnegie Hall’s Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice festival. Prokofiev’s Second Symphony was his work of “iron and steel,” and it suggests the wonderment, scope, and brutal machinery of 1920s technological advancements. It is carefully paired with Webern’s miniature Symphony, Op. 21, a sparse and exacting piece in which “every note has so much meaning and is completely indispensable,” according to Welser-Möst. The concert concludes with Prokofiev’s Fifth, an enduring symphonic favorite that was written during the summer of 1944.

This young German quartet has already performed at major halls around the world including Vienna’s Konzerthaus, London’s Wigmore Hall, and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. Making its debut, the Goldmund offers a program featuring Borodin’s celebrated work.

This pairing of Prokofiev symphonies includes two examples of differing character: his intense Second Symphony, “a piece of iron and steel” as he described it, and his most popular symphony, the more uplifting, irrepressible Fifth. When the Fifth was premiered in the US, Prokofiev’s picture graced the cover of Time magazine, and the magazine’s lengthy profile of him quoted Koussevitzky’s assessment: “[The Fifth Symphony is] the greatest musical event in many, many years. The greatest since Brahms and Tchaikovsky! It is magnificent! It is yesterday, it is today, it is tomorrow.”
