Dame Sarah Connolly’s duo partnership with Joseph Middleton, forged over many years, rises from the telepathic understanding that passes between them whenever they make music. The celebrated mezzo-soprano’s ‘rapport with top Lieder pianist Joseph Middleton’, notes BBC Music Magazine, ‘allows for some very special interchanges’. Their recital includes treasures from Brahms’s Op. 57 collection and the hauntingly beautiful Late Romanticism of Webern’s Early Songs.

Vienna, early twentieth century. Under pressure from industrialization, the rise of psychoanalysis and growing social tensions, familiar world views are losing their footing and the refined styles of the fin de siècle their lustre. In music, literature and the visual arts, the boundaries of expression are being radically pushed back. Composers such as Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alexander von Zemlinsky each sought, in their own way, a new sound idiom, rooted in late Romanticism but unmistakably turned towards the future. During this concert, Alain Altinoglu will showcase three of their masterpieces, all written at this turning point in European cultural history.

L'Ensemble Cordance celebrates chamber music: voice and piano sublimate the lied and mélodie, intimate poetry and emotion. By inventing the mélodie with orchestra, Berlioz gave the genre an entirely different scope, and he was followed by composers such as Chausson and Ravel. The expressive possibilities of the genre inspired the ensemble Cordance to transcribe for voice and string quartet a number of mélodies by Chausson and several lieder by Brahms, featured in the program of this concert.

The title is not misleading – Anton Webern's "Im Sommerwind" (In the Summer Wind) from 1904 is indeed an unclouded orchestral idyll, still firmly in the tradition of Liszt, Wagner, and Strauss. Almost nothing betrays the future avant-garde artist – except perhaps the 20-year-old's already perceptible sensitivity for the finest sound blends. The germ of Mahler's Second Symphony was also a one-movement symphonic poem. It was initially titled "Totenfeier" (Funeral Celebration). This ultimately evolved into the five-movement "Resurrection Symphony," which transcends all boundaries in every respect. The finale, based on the chorale "Aufersteh'n, ja aufersteh'n wirst Du" (Resurrection, yes you will rise), features a huge orchestra, an equally large choir, and two vocal soloists, unfolding with poignant power.

Musical modernism in the 20th Century, contrary to views expressed by conservative critics, came in an arresting diversity of styles, as Hugo Ticciati and Pierre-Laurent Aimard confirm with their choice of recital repertoire. Messiaen’s yearning Theme and Variations raises the curtain on the rhapsodic intensity of Schoenberg’s last instrumental work and Janáček’s impassioned Sonata, before the programme turns to music by three gloriously individual American moderns.

Two great masters of counterpoint meet in this transcription by Anton Webern of the six-part ricercare from Das Musikalische Opfer ( The Musical Offering ) by Johann Sebastian Bach. This transcription, written between November 1934 and January 1935, made a notable contribution to the knowledge and dissemination of the Musical Offering , which had unfortunately fallen into oblivion, as had other works by Bach. While Mendelssohn's celebrated performance of the Matthäus Passion ( St. Matthew Passion ) in Berlin on March 11, 1829, had sparked the so-called Bach Renaissance and, thus, the rediscovery of the great German composer's work, the Musical Offering had remained largely forgotten. This may find some justification in the intellectualistic nature of this work, born almost by chance on a theme composed by the monarch Frederick II of Prussia, a flautist and composer of good calibre, at whose court Bach's second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, had worked as a harpsichordist since 1741. The meeting with the sovereign musician is described in a chronicle published in a Potsdam newspaper on May 11, 1747: "We learn that last Sunday, May 7, the famous Kapellmeister of Leipzig, Herr Bach, arrived with the intention of enjoying and listening to the excellent music of the local royal court. In the evening, around the time when the usual chamber music usually begins in the royal apartments, His Majesty was informed that Herr Bach had arrived in Potsdam and was now in His Majesty's antechamber, where he was awaiting the most gracious permission to listen to the music. His Majesty immediately gave the order to have him enter, and once inside, he went to the so-called Forte and Piano and was pleased to play himself, without any preparation, a theme that Kappellmeister Bach was to develop into a fugue. This was done so skillfully by the aforementioned Kappellmeister that not only His Majesty wanted to demonstrate his most gracious satisfaction, but also everyone else." Those present were amazed. Mr. Bach found the theme given to him so extraordinarily beautiful that he intends to put it on paper and develop it into a regular fugue, and then engrave it on a plate. On Monday, this famous man performed on the organ of the Church of the Holy Spirit, winning general approval from the large audience. In the evening, His Majesty again commissioned him to perform a six-part fugue, which, to His Majesty's delight and everyone's amazement, he executed as skillfully as before.

What happens when music breathes, when sound drifts like mist, or lingers like falling rain? For Japanese composer Tōru Takemitsu, silence was as meaningful as any note. One of the most important voices of the postwar era, Takemitsu drew deep inspiration from nature, composing music that feels both intimate and expansive, rooted in stillness and mystery.

In Between Sound and Silence, the London Sinfonietta brings Takemitsu’s world to life. You'll hear his beautiful, meditative works such as - Rain Coming, and And Then I Knew ’Twas Wind - alongside music by composers who inspired him, including Debussy, Messiaen, and Webern. Their influence helped shape Takemitsu’s unique sound: rich in colour, alive with detail, yet always deeply human.

Described by Strad Magazine as being, “vigorous, extrovert and emphatic players with a vitality all their own,” the Nisaika Quartet’s origins go back to the 1980s at the Curtis Institute of Music. Four chamber-music-hungry friends and classmates, coached by Karen Tuttle and Felix Galimir, went on to win Deuxième Prix at the 8e Concours International de Quatuors à Cordes, a moment described as one of the greatest adventures of their musical lives. After finishing their undergraduate studies, this group of tenacious young musicians went their separate ways to pursue graduate and job opportunities, but always found themselves connected through the years. Now, after more than four decades and four illustrious careers as performers and pedagogues, the Nisaika Quartet reunites for a very special performance, featuring works by Webern, Beethoven, Puccini and Brahms.

The Five Pieces for String Quartet were the work with which Erwin Schulhoff achieved his breakthrough in Salzburg in 1924. The dedication to his French colleague Darius Milhaud reveals what he was aiming for: the concise brevity of the movements, the suite-like sequence, and the aphoristic treatment of the material. The "Five Pieces" are primarily rhythmically inspired, which is probably why one review described them as "nice and lively dance pieces." One should not be fooled by this pleasantness: Schulhoff experiments ingeniously with motivic, metrical, and harmonic forms.

“As a young man I participated in an ensemble called the Gramercy Chamber Ensemble. It was a rather unwieldy group that had a full complement of strings, winds, brass, percussion, singers, and a pianist. We chose repertoire by consensus. When one of the members mentioned a work called Pierrot lunaire there were puzzled faces all around. When he described an orchestration consisting of flute-piccolo, violin-viola, clarinet-bass clarinet (each pair of these instruments played by one person), cello, piano, and a singer who did not really sing but performed a hybrid of singing and speaking on pitch, we were really perplexed.

The final work is Schumann’s Opus 121, a work that its creator explicitly described as a “great” sonata – which refers both to its dimensions and to the demands placed on virtuoso playing.

We can only imagine how much courage, self-confidence and steadfastness the African-American Julia Perry had to muster on her way to becoming a composer, at a time when the doors of classical music were not open to women or people of color. And yet she pursued her goal unswervingly, studying first with Luigi Dallapiccola and later with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Her career began in 1951 with the "Stabat Mater", but it was never given the attention it deserved. A fate that Florence Price had already suffered at the end of the 19th century. She was also a woman and an African-American - and, against all odds, managed to compose an impressive number of around 300 compositions. And a century earlier, Joseph Bologne also had to struggle with racism and discrimination, for he was born in Guadeloupe to a slave and a French nobleman and was later admired at the court of Paris as the "black Mozart". With Brandon Keith Brown, the conductor is vehemently committed to ensuring that people of color, both past and present, are finally given the attention they deserve. As part of the "New Ways" project "Music-Axis-Times", the concert aims to help finally establish this repertoire that has been suppressed for too long and to give people of color a visible place on the stage.

Anton Webern came up with the idea of a string quartet in 1905 during a hiking holiday with his cousin Wilhelmine Mörtl, with whom he had fallen madly in love and whom he married in 1911. The work remained a fragment, and Webern only completed the slow movement. This is almost orchestral in nature, the harmony largely tonal, even though Webern certainly explores its limits - but always with references to the sound world of late Romanticism.
