A nocturnal serenade, a colourful parade of animals, and a cheerful wine tasting  –  the concert by Ensemble Wien-Berlin promises many surprises. The programme opens with Mozart’s mysterious Serenade in C minor, followed by Luciano Berio’s Opus Number Zoo, which transports listeners to rural Italy where hen and fox engage in a dance. Vinko Globokar’s Avgustin, dober je vin playfully mocks intoxicated musicians, while Joachim Raff’s Sinfonietta revives the lighthearted tradition of the Viennese serenade. Ensemble Wien-Berlin, made up of members from both the Berliner and Wiener Philharmoniker, is joined by additional colleagues from Berlin for this performance.

As part of the Spring celebrations, legendary conductor Neeme Järvi, who began his musical journey as a percussionist, will make a much-anticipated return to ERSO’s stage. He will be joined by the dynamic Estonian Percussion Group, an ensemble of four virtuoso percussionists: Karl Johann Lattikas, Lauri Metsvahi, Tiit Joamets, and Tanel-Eiko Novikov. Their passion and skill bring a unique energy that resonates with audiences of all ages. Earlier in 2025, the ensemble made headlines with a remarkable concert marathon, performing ten concerts across Estonia in a single night. For this concert, they will join forces with ERSO for a performance of Antonín Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances, arranged by Peeter Vähi.

Program Nine • An Evening with the Orchestra

Longtime faculty member and clarinet virtuoso Joaquín Valdepeñas conducts top wind students. The program opens with Richard Strauss’s lyrical and melodious Serenade, composed when he was only 17. British composer William Alwyn was also an accomplished conductor and flutist, who showcased his instrument in a 1980 concerto inspired by memories of his youth. In Alwyn’s words, the work “came (to me) like recollections of joy once experienced. I just wanted to write a piece of musical beauty." The program concludes with the Swiss Romantic composer Raff’s sunny and technically brilliant Sinfonietta. Raff was the first composer to use the term to describe a work in several movements similar to a symphony, but shorter and lighter in content.
