An award-winning classical pianist of Nigerian-Filipino heritage, Adam Heron is the titleholder of the 2020 Harriet Cohen Bach Prize, and a laureate of multiple British and international competitions. Born in Hong Kong, he rose to prominence following his 2018 television debut as a BBC Young Musician piano finalist. Through his unique artistry, coupled with an innate flair for communication, Adam strives to become a leading ambassador for classical music.

Italy’s Il Messagero’s enthusiastic review described her playing as, “… particularly compelling to follow the development of the music as guided by this great American soloist, so in tune with the music she so intimately interprets.” Delbeau has performed as collaborative pianist and soloist in several of the world’s most prominent venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Carnegie Hall and Weill-Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, Boston’s Jordan Hall, and Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center. Internationally, she has performed at the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland, and in concerts at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France.

Appropriately, the Midland Symphony Orchestra launches our season of journey and discovery with an evening that begins as a calm voyage, progresses through lyrical enchantment, and finally builds to an imaginative fiery peak! We start with an epic 19th-century sailing adventure -- Mendelssohn’s delightful Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, inspired by Goethe’s poetry. Traveling into the early 20th century, the Orchestra pairs with 2024 Sphinx Competition Robert Frederick Smith Prize winner Nathan Amaral for a performance of the work that won him the prestigious award, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto in G minor, op. 80. Stravinsky’s enchanting The Firebird Suite, made familiar to many in Disney’s Fantasia 2000, follows the heroic adventure of a blazing and beautiful Firebird, closing out this exciting and intrepid evening with a monumental crescendo!

The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra’s 65th season begins with a concert of majestic music to stir the soul. The dramatic sweep of the Hiawatha Overture shows why Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is considered one of the finest composers of the late 19th century. Chineke! return to the festival in 2024. The concert begins with the sparkling Ballade, Op. 33, by the British composer Samuel Coleridge- Taylor, a work of late Romanticism that immediately catches the ear. It might be reminiscent of Tchaikovsky or Dvořák. The latter undoubtedly influenced the symphonic music of the African American composer Florence Price. In 2022, Yannick Nézet-Séguin introduced Price’s First Symphony to Lucerne, and now we can hear her Third. In between, things get jazzy with the Violin Concerto by the legendary trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis.

LLEF, a flute and cello duo by the Welsh-born composer Hilary Tann, is a drone-anchored meditation with breathy pentatonic lines that mingle in the shadows of Welsh hymns. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor weaves endlessly inventive, folk-inflected melodies that Shimmer in a nest of Brahmsian form and Dvořák-esque harmony for his robust quintet for clarinet and strings. Light keyboard filigree provides the titular sparkle for Jennifer Higdon’s glimmering, neo-tonal confection Summer Shimmers for winds and piano.
