Hungarian musician Áron Horváth began playing his country’s national instrument – the cimbalom – at the age of seven. He initially performed traditional Hungarian folk music, but over the years has broadened his scope to include both classical and jazz. In 2023, he was admitted to the prestigious Liszt Academy in Budapest to study classical cimbalom, and in the same year became a member of two prominent ensembles: Elán, which explores the folk music of Central and Eastern Europe, and Intergeese, a jazz trio performing original compositions.

The virtuoso flute tones come from the young Fabian Egger, a competition prize winner, scholarship holder at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and flautist at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. The conductor is Torsten Johann, harpsichordist and co-founder of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.

On the way we take in Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony – an arrangement by Rudolf Barshai of his 8th string quartet, originally written in 1945 and dedicated “to the victims of fascism and war”. CYS will present its final season concert featuring both the Associate Orchestra and the Virtuosi and Intermezzi String Ensembles at 1:00 PM on May 18 at Smithwick Theater, Foothill College. Maestra Kati Kyme will conduct works by Gabriel Fauré, C.P.E. Bach, and Joseph Haydn with the Virtuosi String Ensemble. Haydn composed his Symphony No. 45 in 1768 during his “Sturm und Drang” (Storm and Stress) period, and it carries the subtitle “La Passione”. The Intermezzi Strings will perform works by Mozart and Schubert, as well as selections from Gustav Holst’s St. Paul Suite.

Those who frequent the KSO (indoors and out), know that all forms of jazz fit comfortably within the KSO’s wheelhouse. Stumbling upon intriguing jazz orchestrations of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Dvorak, Gershwin, Holst, Suppe, Verdi, led James Cassidy to assemble an All-Star Big Band to end the 33rd season with a bang.

The concert opens with the jazz piano stylings of Eugen Cicero and his take on C.P.E. Bach’s Solfeggio in C minor. Consummate 1950s-60s arranger Billy May’s no-holds-barred approach to Hungarian Dance No. 5, Poet and Peasant Overture, Humoresque and others, paired with today’s big band guru Gordon Goodwin’s interpolations of the Two-part Invention in D minor, Symphony No. 40 in G minor and Rhapsody in Blue, and Jeremy Levy’s re-imagining of The Planets sets the stage for a veritable “hornucopia” of in your face classics à la jazz to close the KSO’s 33rd campaign.

During the 17th century, the term "Symphony" or "Sinfonia" was usually applied to the opening music for operas, oratorios and cantatas. But gradually, during the 18th century, the symphony developed to become the most important format for independent orchestral music. At this Sunday matinee we present works full of dance-like lightness, joie de vivre and musical surprises. Such as Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's spirited Symphony No. 5, which oscillates at breakneck speed between bold acceleration and abrupt deceleration. Inspired by the magic of such late baroque - or early classical - pearls, Edvard Grieg wrote his suite "From Holberg's Time" - a homage to the Nordic baroque poet Ludvig Holberg. Sometimes this music blossoms dreamily and sweetly, sometimes it is completely soul-sore, then it is outrageously good-humored and always dressed in wonderful melodies. At this matinee our chamber orchestra plays under the direction of our deputy concertmaster Stefan Hunger, who has rendered great service to this ensemble.

Long associated with the instrumental genre, Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach is most well-known for his concertos, sonatas, and symphonies. These works earned him a leading position in the years of the Rococo period, bridging the Baroque and Classical eras. Less well-known are his vocal compositions: his oratorios—a genre he explored only twice—are rarely, if ever, performed. For the first time in the U.S., the ASO presents Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu (The Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus) (1774). First performed during Easter in 1774, the work illustrates some of the unique features of the Rococo period, such as abrupt changes in mood, fluid dynamics, and highly chromatic harmonic writing that point less to the music of C.P.E. Bach’s illustrious father, and more strongly to the innately expressive, passionate flavor of the Romantic period’s music. Accompanying the oratorio in its U.S. premiere is C.P.E. Bach’s choral work Heilig ist Gott (Holy is God) (1776). The composer thought highly of the work, cheekily writing that it “may serve to ensure that I am not too quickly forgotten after my death.”

With his fifth and final piano concerto, Beethoven goes beyond the traditions of his early inspirations and ultimately crafts an innovative and epic masterpiece that surpasses his predecessors’ wildest dreams. Sharing the program with Beethoven is one such early inspiration: C.P.E. Bach. Son of J.S. Bach and a master in his own right, C.P.E. Bach left a huge impact on future generations, including Beethoven. Rounding out the program is Brahms, the man perhaps most preoccupied with Beethoven’s legacy. As Beethoven’s de facto successor, Brahms revered, grappled with, and eventually transcended his idol’s legacy through his magnificent symphonies.

The fundamentally humanistic sound ideal of Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach meets the youthful romantic gesture of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: The 4th Academy Concert continues the series of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos that began in the 1st Academy Concert. Music that is so popular and admired that in 1977 it flew through space on a data disk on board the "Voyager 2" space probe - and is now back in Hamburg. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach does not have to hide from the overwhelming legacy of his famous father, as shown by his Symphony No. 6, nicknamed "Hamburger". A piece of breathtaking tension with rich timbres and a humorous wink. The latter Bach served as a role model for another composer, namely Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The "Youth Symphony" by the twelve-year-old already gives an idea of ​​the composer's great visionary potential.

This year’s Hofkapellen season does not begin as usual with an » unearthed « piece that has been lying dormant in an archive for 200 years and needs to be kissed awake by our musicians. But it starts with music that was played in Bonn: music from two of the most important musical families of the 18th century. When the thunderbolt boy Wolfgang Amadeus stopped off in London at the age of eight, the Mozart family befriended the youngest son of the famous St Thomas-Kantor: Johann Christian Bach was an elegant figure, a bon vivant and composer in the gallant style. But he was not the only influence on the travelling child prodigy. His eldest brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – a very contrasting, rather austere figure – was later even described by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as his » musical father «. The programme includes a festive symphony by Johann Christian Bach, a stormy cello concerto by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and – as a symphonic coupling – a four-movement version of Mozart’s magnificent Posthorn Serenade. But Johann Sebastian Bach, who is at the centre of the Bach family for us today, should not be missing from this concert: If there is enough applause, the audience will experience in the encore which lines of music by Papa Bach were found on the back of a sketch by the teenager Ludwig van B. … Music that was most likely performed in Bonn at the time – at one of the leading musical courts in Europe!

With Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel, the baroque orchestra displays its rich palette of colors. Dated 1721, the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 (so titled because of its dedication to the Margrave of Brandenburg) gives pride of place to the horns, while the Overture No. 1, rich in three trumpets, three oboes and a pair of timpani, is inspired by the splendor of Versailles. It was also towards France and its dances that Handel looked in 1717, when he composed his famous Music for the royal fireworks at the request of King George II: on April 27, 1749, a grandiose spectacle was offered to Londoners to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. But in the first three movements of Brandenburg No. 1, we also perceive the Italian model that Carl Philipp Emanuel, the second son of John Sebastian, would assimilate. This is evidenced by his Symphony No. 4 of 1776, which already turned towards the classical style of the end of the century.

The warmth of Brahms’ third symphony has made it a favourite of many concertgoers. His friend Clara Schumann wrote: “Each movement is a jewel! I could not tell you which I loved most.”  A century earlier, Carl Philip Emanuel Bach composed his emotional and imaginative flute concerto – complete with stormy, calm, angry, and joyous moods, with its dazzling melodies requiring breath-defying skills. Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski’s overture is an exciting exploration of musical buoyancy, rising and falling both in volume and intensity.

Join us for an exquisite chamber orchestra concert featuring the remarkable talents of Magdalena Hoffmann on harp and Henrik Wiese on flute, under the artistic direction of Radoslaw Szulc. This special performance is scheduled for Sunday, 29th October 2023, at 11:00 am in the prestigious Prinzregententheater, Munich. This event is brought to you in cooperation with München Musik, promising an unforgettable musical experience.

The program for the day includes a selection of classical masterpieces that showcase the intricate beauty of chamber music. The repertoire features Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Harp Concerto in C minor, an arrangement of the Harpsichord Concerto, H. 448, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concerto for flute and harp in C major, KV 299, along with his Rondo in C major, KV 373, arranged for flute and orchestra. The concert will conclude with Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 52 in C minor, Hob. I:52, a piece that embodies the depth and complexity of classical symphony.

This concert is a part of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks' event calendar and is a must-attend for classical music enthusiasts. The Kammerorchester des Symphonieorchesters will accompany the soloists, ensuring a performance of the highest caliber.

Distinguished international pianist Angela Brownridge makes a much anticipated return solo recital appearance at Merkin Hall. Her program features a rarely performed sonata by CPE Bach, Haydn’s great E flat Sonata, followed by Chopin and Debussy. The New York Times described her as "...one of the world's finest pianists". The Guardian remarked "...true genius. Her performances were passionate, rhapsodic and totally compelling. She is a marvellously exciting artist with a strong sense of musical structure”. French music critic Adrian Quanier noted her as “A pianist of the highest echelon”.

The tantalizing Concerto Doppio for Harpsichord and Fortepiano (1788) may have been Emmanuel Bach's final composition, having died in the same year at the age of 74. Telemann's vocal masterpiece Ino (1765) was composed two years before his death at the age of 84, and its premiere was likely led by C.P.E Bach (the elder composer’s godson!)
