This evening, our concertmaster Ilian Garnetz will have the opportunity to showcase his talent on stage. His talent was nurtured from an early age: raised in an artistic family, he made his solo debut at the age of ten and later studied with, among others, Igor Oistrakh. Today, he is a prizewinner of major competitions and a sought-after chamber musician. For this chamber concert, he has compiled a richly evocative and captivating program, which he will present with great pleasure together with Stanislav Jar at the piano – a musical reflection of a vibrant era full of contrasts. The concert opens with a dazzling work by George Enescu, often called the "Romanian Mozart," who, as a violinist and composer, masterfully wove folkloric elements into his music.

“After dinner, I prevailed upon CPE Bach to sit down again to a clavichord…he grew so animated and possessed, that he not only played, but looked like one inspired.” Possessed and entranced too is the F major symphony by CPE Bach: kinks and coils at every turn, with heaps of non-sequiturs that fit bizarrely and beautifully together. Internationally renowned violinist and Philharmonia favorite Shunske Sato guides us through the connection between works by some of the 18th and 19th centuries’ most beloved composers.

As a globally sought-after specialist and interpreter of early music, he regularly unearths pieces from the Baroque to the Bel Canto era: Attilio Cremonesi has compiled rarities from the 18th century for this program. From the so-called Age of Sensibility come the first examples of the emerging genre of symphony, whose development into the classical form in Haydn can be observed in this concert. These are complemented by artful concert arias, sung by soprano Josefine Mindus from the music theater ensemble.

6th Symphony Concert: Early Classical period

Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden

Pianist Sebastian Knauer and a string quintet take a musical journey from the Baroque to the Classical period, in which the development of the piano concerto genre within the Bach family is shown in a fascinating way. Father Johann Sebastian was the first composer ever to give the piano/harpsichord a solo role alongside the orchestra. His sons Carl Philipp Emanuel, Wilhelm Friedemann and Johann Christian masterfully continued this tradition, and adapted their concertos both to contemporary taste and to innovations in musical instrument making. In this respect, the Bach family made a significant contribution to the emancipation of the piano as a solo instrument in the mid-18th century on the way to Mozart. The Bach sons’ piano concertos in this program are rarities, very rarely heard in concert.

Curated and conducted by David Hayes, this program juxtaposes Baroque and Pre-Classical music with works inspired by this period, offering a fresh perspective—like old wine in new bottles. Anchored by Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 and C.P.E. Bach’s Symphony in D Major, the program contrasts these masterpieces with works from the early 20th c.—Respighi’s Gli Uccelli and Richard Strauss’ Dance Suite after Couperin—compositions that were inspired by Baroque keyboard music. Known for his inventive programming, David Hayes pairs unexpected works to invite audiences to experience the thrill of discovery and hear older music through a new lens.

Baroque Inspirations

He was perhaps the greatest genius in music history, later eclipsed, if at all, only by the child prodigy Mozart. Yet Johann Sebastian Bach not only gifted posterity with numerous musical masterpieces, but also with several sons, some of whom followed in their all-powerful father's footsteps. First and foremost, Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Sebastian Bach's second eldest son, whose "sensitive" style made him the most popular Bach of the second half of the 18th century—while Johann Sebastian Bach's eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, was famous during his lifetime primarily for his phenomenal improvisational skills on all keyboard instruments. When Asya Fateyeva and her fellow musicians perform Baroque sonatas by the Bach dynasty, they do so on an instrument that Bach himself could not have even known, for the saxophone was not invented until the 19th century. When the saxophonist approaches early music on a comparatively modern instrument, she does so in the spirit of Bach: He was not only interested in the compositional possibilities of new or improved instruments such as the "Well-Tempered Clavier," but was also extremely flexible in instrumentation questions in his masterful compositions.

Then we explore three symphonies of different styles: Stravinsky’s expressive Symphony in C; C. P. E. A toast to defiance! Nothing inspires creativity more than the will to resist. Take, for example, when Josef Suk writes variations on the secret national anthem of the Czechs on the eve of World War I. Or when Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach lets loose in his D minor concerto, while his employer, Frederick II, prefers galant tones. Further examples are the serenade with which Hugo Wolf responded to the failure of his overture to the opera "Penthesilea": a Mediterranean serenade with the motto "just don't let yourself be defeated." And the Opus 4 of the frustrated college student Benjamin Britten: His "Simple Symphony" consists of musical snippets he composed when he was 10 or 12 years old...

During the 17th century, the term "Symphony" or "Sinfonia" was usually applied to the opening music for operas, oratorios and cantatas. But gradually, during the 18th century, the symphony developed to become the most important format for independent orchestral music. The formal proportions were dramatically expanded and the instrumentation refined and expanded, paving the way for the genre's dominant status in the Romantic period with composers such as Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler.

At this Sunday matinee we present works full of dance-like lightness, joie de vivre and musical surprises. Such as Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's spirited Symphony No. 5, which oscillates at breakneck speed between bold acceleration and abrupt deceleration. Inspired by the magic of such late baroque - or early classical - pearls, Edvard Grieg wrote his suite "From Holberg's Time" - a homage to the Nordic baroque poet Ludvig Holberg. Sometimes this music blossoms dreamily and sweetly, sometimes it is completely soul-sore, then it is outrageously good-humored and always dressed in wonderful melodies. Long associated with the instrumental genre, Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach is most well-known for his concertos, sonatas, and symphonies. These works earned him a leading position in the years of the Rococo period, bridging the Baroque and Classical eras. Less well-known are his vocal compositions: his oratorios—a genre he explored only twice—are rarely, if ever, performed. For the first time in the U.S., the ASO presents Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu (The Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus) (1774). First performed during Easter in 1774, the work illustrates some of the unique features of the Rococo period, such as abrupt changes in mood, fluid dynamics, and highly chromatic harmonic writing that point less to the music of C.P.E. Bach’s illustrious father, and more strongly to the innately expressive, passionate flavor of the Romantic period’s music. Accompanying the oratorio in its U.S. premiere is C.P.E. Bach’s choral work Heilig ist Gott (Holy is God) (1776). The composer thought highly of the work, cheekily writing that it “may serve to ensure that I am not too quickly forgotten after my death.”

Iconic, legendary, epic — the Emperor stands alone as an unrivaled titan among concertos. With his fifth and final piano concerto, Beethoven goes beyond the traditions of his early inspirations and ultimately crafts an innovative and epic masterpiece that surpasses his predecessors’ wildest dreams. Sharing the program with Beethoven is one such early inspiration: C.P.E. Bach. Son of J.S. Bach and a master in his own right, C.P.E. Bach left a huge impact on future generations, including Beethoven. Rounding out the program is Brahms, the man perhaps most preoccupied with Beethoven’s legacy. As Beethoven’s de facto successor, Brahms revered, grappled with, and eventually transcended his idol’s legacy through his magnificent symphonies.
