The fundamentally humanistic sound ideal of Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach meets the youthful romantic gesture of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: The 4th Academy Concert continues the series of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos that began in the 1st Academy Concert. Music that is so popular and admired that in 1977 it flew through space on a data disk on board the "Voyager 2" space probe - and is now back in Hamburg. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach does not have to hide from the overwhelming legacy of his famous father, as shown by his Symphony No. 6, nicknamed "Hamburger". A piece of breathtaking tension with rich timbres and a humorous wink. The latter Bach served as a role model for another composer, namely Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The "Youth Symphony" by the twelve-year-old already gives an idea of ​​the composer's great visionary potential.

With Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel, the baroque orchestra displays its rich palette of colors. Dated 1721, the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 (so titled because of its dedication to the Margrave of Brandenburg) gives pride of place to the horns, while the Overture No. 1, rich in three trumpets, three oboes and a pair of timpani, is inspired by the splendor of Versailles. It was also towards France and its dances that Handel looked in 1717, when he composed his famous Music for the royal fireworks at the request of King George II: on April 27, 1749, a grandiose spectacle was offered to Londoners to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. But in the first three movements of Brandenburg No. 1, we also perceive the Italian model that Carl Philipp Emanuel, the second son of John Sebastian, would assimilate. This is evidenced by his Symphony No. 4 of 1776, which already turned towards the classical style of the end of the century.

The warmth of Brahms’ third symphony has made it a favourite of many concertgoers. His friend Clara Schumann wrote: “Each movement is a jewel! I could not tell you which I loved most.”  A century earlier, Carl Philip Emanuel Bach composed his emotional and imaginative flute concerto – complete with stormy, calm, angry, and joyous moods, with its dazzling melodies requiring breath-defying skills. Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski’s overture is an exciting exploration of musical buoyancy, rising and falling both in volume and intensity.

Her program features a rarely performed sonata by CPE Bach, Haydn’s great E flat Sonata, followed by Chopin and Debussy. The New York Times described her as "...one of the world's finest pianists". The Guardian remarked "...true genius. Her performances were passionate, rhapsodic and totally compelling. She is a marvellously exciting artist with a strong sense of musical structure”. The tantalizing Concerto Doppio for Harpsichord and Fortepiano (1788) may have been Emmanuel Bach's final composition, having died in the same year at the age of 74. Telemann's vocal masterpiece Ino (1765) was composed two years before his death at the age of 84, and its premiere was likely led by C.P.E Bach (the elder composer’s godson!)

As second of five surviving sons, Emanuel Bach (as he was known) embarked on an unusual journey to overcome the prodigious shadow of his father, Johann Sebastian Bach. Although he was personally trained in music by his father, Phillip Emanuel, didn’t seriously pursue his career as a composer in earnest until he graduated from law school and obtained an appointment as the harpsichordist in Frederick the Great’s royal orchestra in 1738. He spent the next 50 years of his life establishing an impeccable reputation of his own as an accomplished composer, music theorist who wrote the first important treatise on keyboard playing, and mentored scores of Classical giants such as Mozart and Haydn. In fact, when asked about C.P.E. Bach, Mozart famously noted that “He is the father, we’re the children.”

However, he never escaped the omnipresent legacy of his own father and, consequently, his music became forgotten over time. Our musical offering focuses on C.P.E. Bach’s Berlin years and features.

The Academy join American Cellist Gary Hoffman on a tour of the USA. Making his musical debut at the Wigmore Hall in London at the age of fifteen, quickly followed by New York, Gary became the youngest faculty appointee in the history of the Indiana University School of Music at the age of twenty-two. After winning the Premier Grand Prix of the Rostropovich International Competition in Paris in 1986, he embarked on an international career, appearing with the world’s most noted orchestras, in major recital and chamber music series and at prestigious festivals.

Pianist and composer Conrad Tao made his SPCO debut in a program built around Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 24. A Renaissance madrigal by Carlo Gesualdo, a sunny keyboard concerto by C.P.E. Bach, and a cryptic work for viola and piano by Morton Feldman were like a twisting labyrinth of darkness and light that anticipated the harmonic instability and searching quality of Mozart’s concerto. Ruth Crawford-Seeger’s Music for Small Orchestra framed this journey with a slow, pensive descent into the dark maze and a roguish finale that climbs towards a window of light.

The festival begins on a celebratory note, connecting Joseph Haydn, the father of the Classical style, with the Baroque era’s greatest master, Johann Sebastian Bach. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, son of Johann Sebastian, composed his dashing A major Cello Concerto only three years after his father’s death, setting a new standard of instrumental brilliance. In Haydn’s dramatic cantata, the heroine Ariadne is abandoned during the night on the island of Naxos by her lover Theseus, whom she had saved from the Minotaur. Haydn’s ever popular C major Violin Concerto follows, and the evening closes with Johann Sebastian Bach’s secular cantata Be still, stop chattering (in essence, a short comic opera), which tells the humorous, cautionary tale of a young woman addicted to coffee.

Although we were unable to celebrate Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday at the 2020 Festival, cellist Keiran Campbell (principal, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra) and fortepianist Sezi Seskir (Bucknell University) join forces for an exploration of music by Beethoven and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, whose embracing of the empfindsamer Stil (“sensitive style”) presaged Beethoven’s dramatic extravagances. Among works the duo will play will include Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 5, No. 2; as well as C.P.E. Bach’s Gamba Sonata in C major, Wq. 136.

Iconic, legendary, epic — the Emperor stands alone as an unrivaled titan among concertos. With his fifth and final piano concerto, Beethoven goes beyond the traditions of his early inspirations and ultimately crafts an innovative and epic masterpiece that surpasses his predecessors’ wildest dreams. Sharing the program with Beethoven is one such early inspiration: C.P.E. Bach. Son of J.S. Bach and a master in his own right, C.P.E. Bach left a huge impact on future generations, including Beethoven. Rounding out the program is Brahms, the man perhaps most preoccupied with Beethoven’s legacy. As Beethoven’s de facto successor, Brahms revered, grappled with, and eventually transcended his idol’s legacy through his magnificent symphonies.

Long associated with the instrumental genre, Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach is most well-known for his concertos, sonatas, and symphonies. These works earned him a leading position in the years of the Rococo period, bridging the Baroque and Classical eras. Less well-known are his vocal compositions: his oratorios—a genre he explored only twice—are rarely, if ever, performed. For the first time in the U.S., the ASO presents Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu (The Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus) (1774). First performed during Easter in 1774, the work illustrates some of the unique features of the Rococo period, such as abrupt changes in mood, fluid dynamics, and highly chromatic harmonic writing that point less to the music of C.P.E. Bach’s illustrious father, and more strongly to the innately expressive, passionate flavor of the Romantic period’s music. Accompanying the oratorio in its U.S. premiere is C.P.E. Bach’s choral work Heilig ist Gott (Holy is God) (1776). The composer thought highly of the work, cheekily writing that it “may serve to ensure that I am not too quickly forgotten after my death.”

During the 17th century, the term "Symphony" or "Sinfonia" was usually applied to the opening music for operas, oratorios and cantatas. But gradually, during the 18th century, the symphony developed to become the most important format for independent orchestral music. The formal proportions were dramatically expanded and the instrumentation refined and expanded, paving the way for the genre's dominant status in the Romantic period with composers such as Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler.

Called “a brilliant musician and an extraordinary visionary” by The Wall Street Journal, pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard is renowned for his masterfully intuitive performances of works both cutting edge and deeply historic. This afternoon performance of musical fantasias is a prime example, opening with a piece by J. P. Sweelinck—a foundational Dutch fantasia composer of the late 16th century—and proceeding through roughly 400 years of works from the expansive, evolving tradition. Discover musical innovations and explorations by Sweelinck, Mozart, C. P. E. Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Ives, and Carter.

Those who frequent the KSO (indoors and out), know that all forms of jazz fit comfortably within the KSO’s wheelhouse. Stumbling upon intriguing jazz orchestrations of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Dvorak, Gershwin, Holst, Suppe, Verdi, led James Cassidy to assemble an All-Star Big Band to end the 33rd season with a bang.

The concert opens with the jazz piano stylings of Eugen Cicero and his take on C.P.E. Bach’s Solfeggio in C minor. Consummate 1950s-60s arranger Billy May’s no-holds-barred approach to Hungarian Dance No. 5, Poet and Peasant Overture, Humoresque and others, paired with today’s big band guru Gordon Goodwin’s interpolations of the Two-part Invention in D minor, Symphony No. 40 in G minor and Rhapsody in Blue, and Jeremy Levy’s re-imagining of The Planets sets the stage for a veritable “hornucopia” of in your face classics à la jazz to close the KSO’s 33rd campaign.
