Portable Infinity is a dynamic jazz quartet formed by Danish saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, one of Europe’s leading jazz artists. With nearly 60 solo albums and collaborations with legends like Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, and Randy Brecker, Koppel brings his expansive musical vision to the group.

Joining him is the legendary bassist Scott Colley, renowned for his work with Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, and Carmen McRae. Colley’s mastery of the bass and composition adds depth and innovation to the band.

Swedish pianist Jacob Karlzon, a prominent heir to Esbjörn Svensson’s legacy, contributes his exceptional skill and creativity, having released several acclaimed albums with ACT and Warner.

Drummer Magnus Öström, known for his groundbreaking work with E.S.T. and collaborations with Pat Metheny and Benny Golson, completes the quartet. Together, these musicians create a fresh, exciting sound that pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz.

Pianist Myra Melford and drummer Allison Miller draw on their shared passion for nature and the life-giving power of light in their Lux Quartet. Saxophonist Dayna Stephens and bassist Scott Colley amplify the two bandleader’s innovative compositions to craft an intense, glowing sonic experience. The combination of artists is, according to Melford, “like throwing a spark at tinder—everything immediately bursts into flames.”

Chris Potter is a phenomenon on the sax. Whether he is pulling solo angular melody lines out of his sleeve or creating soft harmonies with his ensembles, it is always an impressive performance. At the request of the leading San Francisco Jazz Festival – where Potter since last year has been artistic director-in-residence – he wrote a new work Generations. “A meditation on the links between people through time, and on the relationships between events in the past, present and future,” this is how the saxophonist describes his creation.

Lage’s final night of residency is a celebration of the late guitar legend Jim Hall, a lasting influence on and mentor to Lage, featuring an all-star quartet with deep ties to the 2004 NEA Jazz Master who passed away in 2013.

The masterful rhythm section of veterans Scott Colley and Joey Baron performed widely in Hall’s trio during his last years, with Lage joining during a memorable week at New York’s Blue Note in 2012. Of Lage, Hall said, “Incredible player. Julian Lage is the new jazz guard.”

Luciana Souza returns to Joe’s Pub after a long hiatus to present The Book of Longing and to premiere her new Chamber Music America grant, Twenty-Four Short Musical Episodes. The Book of Longing is Luciana’s tribute to Leonard Cohen and a collaboration with Brazilian guitarist Chico Pinheiro and bassist Scott Colley. Twenty-Four Short Musical Episodes is a song-cycle that loosely tracks the 24 hours of a day in someone’s life in an out-of-order way. Each episode springs from an improvisation that was later notated and then titled, using the first lines from poems by Emily Dickinson.

The series begins on February 1 with a rare US date by Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, joined by two of the top players in jazz, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade. Muthspiel lives in Vienna and is considered one of the most influential guitarists of his generation. After studying at the New England Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he toured with the Gary Burton Quintet, establishing a wide reputation on the jazz scene. His recordings as a leader on the ECM Record label have featured collaborations with Ralph Towner, Brad Mehldau, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Larry Grenadier. He has also been a regularly sought-after sideman for artists such as Dave Liebman, Peter Erskine, Paul Motian, Gary Peacock, John Patitucci, and many more. Muthspiel’s latest album, Angular Blues, with Scott Colley and Brian Blade, was released in the spring of 2020. The Times (London) wrote, “…moods shift from sunny and pastoral through the sharper edges of the title track... The three play with a relaxed precision that comes from long hours at the bandstand together… an exercise in fine-spun lyricism with echoes of Scarlatti and Bach … a quietly impressive album.”

Wolfgang Muthspiel is one of the most influential jazz guitarists of our time. In the 1980s, the man with the smooth guitar sound and unerring picking technique left his native Austria for the USA, where he quickly made a name for himself with his versatile playing. He enhanced records by singers such as Rebekka Bakken, Maria João, and Youssou N'Dour and was invited to concerts and studio recordings by jazz giants such as John Patitucci. Since then, he has continued to expand into new spheres. In 2018, he introduced a new all-star trio with Scott Colley on bass and living legend Brian Blade on drums, both of whom enjoy the trust of greats such as Herbie Hancock and John Scofield.
