This is a double bill not to be missed! Clarinet virtuoso Anat Cohen has always felt a deep connection to the joy, inventiveness, and deep grooves of Brazilian musical traditions. During her frequent trips to Brazil, Anat has found kindred spirits in the remarkable musicians there including the brilliant guitarist Romero Lubambo who was in the thick of the original bossa nova explosion in the 1960s. Anat and Romero have each become regulars on our stage in different combinations. Together, their approach to samba, bossa nova, and other Brazilian music styles is absolutely sublime.

With her vocal prowess, it’s no surprise that Dianne Reeves has received five Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album, an honorary doctorate of music from Julliard, and was recently named a 2018 National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master – the highest honor the United States bestows on jazz artists. The albums in her Blue Note discography are among the finest jazz vocal albums every made, featuring side players who are all giants in their own rights — Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard, and many others. To close this special 50th Anniversary concert, Dianne will be accompanied by her quintet and by a full orchestra conducted by multi-Grammy winner Vince Mendoza.
The SJW 50th Anniversary Band is truly a superband of musicians who have shaped the sound of jazz in recent decades. The astonishing artists of this ensemble share one thing in common: time at SJW as young jazz musicians. Now they’re going to be raising a glass — and their horns and voices — to celebrate 50 years of the Stanford Jazz Workshop.

February 6 brings two of today’s leading jazz guitarists from Brazil, Romero Lubambo and Chico Pinheiro, who united in September 2021 to record a duo album. Known to Athenaeum audiences from past appearances with Luciana Souza and Trio Da Paz, Lubambo has performed and recorded with many of the outstanding artists of our time, including a range spanning from Dianne Reeves, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, and Gal Costa to Yo-Yo Ma, Kathleen Battle, and Billie Eilish. Jazziz wrote, “Guitarist Romero Lubambo may be the best practitioner of his craft in the world today... [his] facility, creativity and energy are in a class all their own.” Downbeat commented, “Lubambo is by himself the equivalent of an entire samba band… He tosses melodies, bass lines and rhythms in the air like juggling clubs.” Chico Pinheiro is known to Athenaeum audiences from past appearances with fellow guitarist Anthony Wilson and as the leader of his own quintet with saxophonist Bob Mintzer. Guitar giant Pat Metheny wrote, “There are many incredible guitarists out there. On the top of that list, I'd include Chico Pinheiro.” The Boston Globe called him, “one of the brightest lights on today’s Brazilian jazz scene.”
