Opening the program is Felix Mendelssohn’s first cello sonata, a work of luminous interplay that reveals both the cello’s expressive depth and the piano’s crystalline brilliance. Then, Nadia Boulanger’s striking miniatures demonstrate the full range of the cello’s capabilities, as do Robert Schumann’s folk-inspired short compositions. The program concludes with the trailblazing composer Rebecca Clarke, whose rich, expressive Viola Sonata is presented here in its cello arrangement. Written in 1919 for a competition, the work tied for first place with a sonata by Ernest Bloch and is admired for its sweeping lyricism, harmonic richness, technical brilliance, and sheer expressive power.

"The Fantastic" is the theme of this season's chamber concerts in the Apollosaal, based on the season's first opera premiere, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann. Musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin have developed programs that approach this idea and concept, which play a key role in music, in a variety of ways. Ranging from the Baroque to the present day, with a particular focus on the Romantic period, featuring Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and the multitalented E.T.A. Hoffmann (who, in an idealized form, became the title character in Offenbach's opera), "The Fantastic" will be explored with a variety of chamber music works in diverse ensembles.

September’s chamber concert will be headlined by acclaimed Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu, who will also appear as soloist in the Orchestra’s season-opening concert the previous evening. The programme presents a diverse selection of solo and chamber music, ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach and Clara Schumann to James Lee III and Missy Mazzoli. Audiences will also have the rare opportunity to hear works by lesser-known composers such as Emmy Schäfer Klein and Leokadiya Kashperova. The ERSO Chamber Ensemble will be joined by a chamber arrangement of Wolfgang Amadus Mozart’s well-known Rondo in D major for piano and orchestra. Additional featured composers include Amy Beach, Florence Price, and Nadia Boulanger.

This concert transports us to Paris to celebrate legendary pedagogue Nadia Boulanger and some of her remarkable students. From Aaron Copland to Astor Piazzolla to Quincy Jones, many young talents sought her guidance, solidifying her legacy as the Grande Dame of 20th-century composition. The program also includes works by Stravinsky, whom she admired and advised on several of his pieces, music by her talented sister Lili Boulanger, and the G minor Piano Quartet of her own teacher, Gabriel Fauré.

Mary Bevan released her debut solo disc, Voyages, in 2017 (with pianist Joseph Middleton on the Signum label), which explores the music of eminent French composers and the settings they wrote for the poems of Charles Baudelaire. For this recital, Mary revisits her favourite repertoire from Voyages, including songs by Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Chabrier, and more, but this time, each song is paired with another by a female composer writing around the same time. In this way, the recital seeks to bring the female composers from out of the shadow of their male counterparts and restore them to their rightful places as composers of equal quality and interest.

Four saxophones fill rooms. Their sound is rich, loud, and colorful. As a mini big band, they can replace an orchestra, and that's exactly what they do here. You can hear cello concertos and orchestral works arranged for cello, piano, and saxophone quartet. Schwetzingen artist in residence Raphaela Gromes takes on the string part, arranger Julian Riem sits at the grand piano, and the four spirited wind players of the Signum Saxophone Quartet, founded in 2016, ensure that the music not only sounds beautiful, but also explodes at times. For example, when the forest witch Baba Yaga swings herself on her broom in Anatoly Lyadov's tone poem. During the long clarinet glissando at the beginning of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue . In Bernstein's groovy Mambo . Or during the musical shared apartment of rock, jazz, Vivaldi, and Schubert in Friedrich Gulda's Cello Concerto. You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Domonkos Csabay is a UK-based Hungarian concert pianist, chamber musician and accompanist. He studied with András Kemenes and István Lantos at the Liszt Academy Budapest, and is a graduate of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where his professors were Pascal Nemirovski and John Thwaites.

He has made several concerto appearances and has been invited to many prestigious venues and festivals, such as the Budapest Spring Festival or the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival.

Competition successes include 1st prize at the Lyon International Chamber Music competition in 2022 and 1st prize at the Birmingham International Piano Competition in 2016 and special award in the Budapest Liszt Competition in 2021, as well as prizes won as a composer in Romania and as member of a Lied duo in Wales. His performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and on Hungarian Radio

The surging passions of César Franck’s repurposed sonata perfectly complement the lyricism, humour, and prescient unrest that infiltrate the Shostakovich that precedes it. We have so much to celebrate this season - The BI Database reaching its one-year anniversary, Women’s History Month, Our 6th-annual WoCo fest coming up in April, but most of all the 40th Birthday of our Co-Founder, Artistic and Executive Director, Dr. Laura Colgate.

This concert, performed by our two co-founders, will be a festive occasion to celebrate all that BI has done so far and look forward to all of the exciting things to come. The program will include works for violin and organ by Alexandra Gardner, Lili Boulanger, Amy Beach, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Florence Price, Isabella Leonarda, and more! In their ISO debuts, pianist Alexandra Dariescu and conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya perform legendary composer and pedagogue Nadia Boulanger’s newly-discovered Fantaisie variée, composed in 1912. Dariescu was the first pianist to perform this work in the United States. Yanlovskaya also leads music by Ukranian composer Mykola Lysenko and Tchaikovsky’s heart-wrenching Symphony  No. 6, “Pathétique.”

After our first performance together back in 2019 and a solo performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with the MSO, Thomas Mesa returns as we collaborate once again in a program of organ and cello music. Mr. Mesa and I will both perform works by women composers, such as Nadia Boulanger’s gorgeous Trois Pièces, as well as a solo cello work written for him by Spanish composer Andrea Casarrubios. We will close this exciting evening with a commissioned work written for the two of us, Daniel Ficarri’s Sonata in C minor for Organ and Cello, which was inspired by our first performance at Overture Hall.
