Some photos on Giorgi Gigashvili's Instagram profile suggest he's more likely to be in a Berlin techno club than on a classical concert stage. For the Georgian pianist, born in 2000, these worlds aren't so contradictory after all – he's playing sonatas by Scarlatti one moment, singing and accompanying folk songs from his homeland the next, and experimenting with electronic music shortly after. And with success: Prizes at prestigious piano competitions, a place among Georgia's Forbes magazine's most influential "30 under 30," and a nomination as a "Rising Star" by the European Concert Hall Organization all mark his young career.

Founded 40 years ago, Concerto Köln is one of the outstanding protagonists of early music. It's fortunate that the journey to Duisburg is not far – and that the Duisburg Philharmonic also includes seasoned experts in musically informed performance practice. This creates ideal conditions for an extraordinary encounter in a concert that brings together well-known and lesser-known masterpieces by composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Examples such as those of the Italian Antonio Vivaldi, the German George Frideric Handel, the Frenchman Jean-Philippe Rameau, the Bohemian Jan Dismas Zelenka, and the Englishman Henry Purcell demonstrate that all of Europe was shaken by the tremendous musical developments of this period. Some of these masters will perform "vocal specialties" – arias from operas or sacred works – or, like the piano pioneer Domenico Scarlatti, excerpts from their instrumental works. The name of countertenor Valer Sabadus, who is another guest from Cologne in Duisburg, shines as brilliantly as his voice.

The celebrated Yorkshire pianist, Sarah Beth Briggs, makes her fourth visit to the series with another festive programme of simple and sparkling pieces. She begins with Scarlatti’s ‘Pastorale’ sonata, whose melody comes from an old Neapolitan Christmas song, and four of Mendelssohn’s charming song-like Christmas pieces. Debussy’s famous Suite looks back to the courtly dances of the French Baroque and includes the stunning Clair de Lune. Tchaikovsky portrays a jovial Troika ride in November and the pure joy of Christmas, before Sarah’s programme ends with one of Mendelssohn’s finest piano works: 17 variations, full of energy and passion.

Guitar sensation Raphaël Feuillâtre is rapidly becoming the new voice of classical guitar. Our first guest artist of the 25-26 concert season, pianist Evren Ozel, recently competed in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Ozel came away with two awards: Best Performance of the Mozart Concerto Award, and the Bronze Medal for the overall competition – bravo!! We are thrilled to have him perform at our season opener on September 13 and are pleased to partner with Opening Nights at FSU to offer audiences an additional chance to hear his talent. At this special recital, Evren Ozel will perform some of his favorite solo piano works in the more intimate setting of Opperman Music Hall.

Favorably reviewed by American Record Guide, she has recorded for Fleur de Son and Mark Records, establishing herself as an interpreter of twentieth- and twenty-first-century piano solo music. She has been featured on numerous radio and television broadcasts worldwide. Hong made her debut at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall as a winner of the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition. She participated in the Van Cliburn International Audition, Robert Casadesus International Competition, William Kapell International Piano Competition, and UNISA International Piano Competition, among others. She has been a featured performer on Robert Sherman’s Young Artists Showcase (WQXR) and countless other radio broadcasts throughout the nation and abroad. She has studied with such luminaries as Martin Canin, Jerome Lowenthal, Sergei Babayan, Dmitrii Paperno, Ann Schein, Karen “Doc” Shaw, James Tocco, and Marylou Deitzer. Hong is an alumnus of the IU Jacobs School of Music (D.M.), The Juilliard School (M.M.), and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins (B.M). She currently serves as professor and area head of piano at The Ohio State University. Her students have won competitions and positions in music academia. She is a Steinway Artist, a recipient of the Steinway Top Teacher Award, founder of the American Liszt Society Ohio Chapter, American Liszt Society Board Member, executive and artistic director of the Franz Liszt (U.S.) International Festival and Piano Competition. Other professional affiliations include Columbus Symphony Orchestra where she holds the Reinberger Foundation Chair. This summer she will be serving as artist faculty for the Pianale International Piano Competition and Academy.

Mahan Esfahani is a genius harpsichordist and an irresistible advocate for the music he performs. In his anticipated return, he presents a thoughtful tribute to the music—and musical devotees—of 17th- and 18th-century London. He begins with one of Handel’s “eight great suites,” followed by selected works by composer and Westminster Abbey organist Orlando Gibbons. Though written by an Italian composer in the service of the kings of Portugal and Spain, the Scarlatti sonatas also found their first advocates among London’s music enthusiasts. The program closes with the final so-called “English” keyboard suite composed by a young J. S. Bach.

Our final concert of the 2023 concert season features a recital by pianist Clayton Stephenson, the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022 and a 2022 Gilmore Young Artist. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making. Now studying in the Harvard-New England Conservatory Dual Degree Program, Stephenson grew up in New York City and began piano lessons and age 7. He was accepted into the Julliard Outreach Music Advance Program for underprivileged children the next year and credits the generous support of community programs with providing him musical inspiration and resources along the way. Making his Tippet Rise debut, Stephenson will perform a program Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonata in E Major, Scriabin’s Sonata No. 4 in F-sharp Major, Beethoven’s Sonata Appassionata, a virtuoso transcription of a work by George Gershwin, an Art Tatum arrangement of Tea for Two, as well as Hiromi Uehara’s The Tom and Jerry Show.

Enter through the white doorway on Park Avenue between 91st and 92nd Street, where you'll find a welcoming entrance with a hand-rail and two small steps.

This special event features core musicians Nicholas DiEugenio on violin and Jeffrey Grossman on harpsichord, who will explore the violin's Italian roots and its evolution into the orchestra's diva. The program will highlight the instrument's journey from the streets to the concert hall, showcasing works by legendary composers such as Giovanni Battista Fontana, Domenico Scarlatti, Johann Sebastian Bach, Giovanni Battista Somis, and George Frideric Handel. The concert will include a mix of solo and duo repertoire, with a special focus on Bach's sonatas and partitas, which were heavily influenced by Italian music.

The concert will last approximately 80 minutes without an intermission, promising an uninterrupted musical journey through time.

American pianist Clayton Stephenson’s love for music is immediately apparent in his joyous charisma onstage, expressive power and natural ease at the instrument. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making.

Growing up in New York City, Clayton started piano lessons at age 7 and was accepted into the Juilliard Outreach Music Advancement Program for underprivileged children the next year, where he attended numerous student recitals and fell in love with music. At the age of 10 he advanced to Juilliard’s elite Pre-College program with the help of his teacher, Beth Nam. At Juilliard he studied with Matti Raekallio, Hung-Kuang Chen and Ernest Barretta.

Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov launched his career by winning the London International Piano Competition in 2009 at the age of 18 and has made a seamless transition from prodigy to celebrated career musician. He performs frequently in recital at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, among many others, as well as in chamber music performances and as soloist with leading orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, San Francisco Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, and Concertgebouworkest. The exciting program includes Schumann’s dramatic Kreisleriana and Rachmaninoff’s riveting Variations on a Theme of Corelli.

A native of South Korea, Kim has inspired a dedicated and passionate fan base by defying conventional wisdom and expanding on the traditional classical concert experience. Globally lauded for her Baroque artistry, Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt won the prestigious City of Leipzig Bach Medal in 2020 and The Daily Telegraph has praised her “crispness and clarity” and “exquisite precision.” Her mastery shines in a program of Baroque brilliance: two adventurous Bach works, the fiery virtuosity of Scarlatti, and Rameau’s elegant Suite No. 2 – her Hyperion recording of which The Times (London) hailed as “magnificent.”

Pergolesi's incomparable setting of the Stabat Mater rose to great fame immediately following the composer's untimely death at the age of 26. Known for its beautiful arias and duets for soprano and alto, the writer and composer Jean-Jacques Rousseau praised the opening movement as "the most perfect and touching duet to come from the pen of any composer." The uniquely captivating music of Pergolesi's setting attracted Johann Sebastian Bach about a decade later, inspiring him to compose an arrangement of the instrumental parts that included a very elaborate part for the violas. After all, Bach was a fine violist himself, and he must have yearned for the opportunity to contribute to Pergolesi's beautiful music in a way that would flatter its composer.
