It couldn't be more Christmassy! The anticipation of the upcoming holidays is audible in this concert full of Christmas tunes, sleigh rides, and Christmas wishes. The focus is on the music for Erich Wolfgang Korngold's fairytale ballet "The Snowman": Colombine and her admirer Pierrot attempt to escape from the clutches of Uncle Pantaloon – and succeed with the help of a snowman. The story is narrated. Finally, things get particularly festive with Otto Nicolai's Christmas Overture, featuring ever-changing variations of the chorale "Vom Himmel hoch."

With this program, the orchestra wants to give its audience a real Christmas present. In the program, we have tried to collect the most beautiful Christmas melodies and the most famous Christmas songs. Everything from Sibelius' Christmas Carol, Koppången and Klang min vackra bjällra , to Sleigh Ride and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, which are also included in the program. To help us, we have Norrköping-born Olle Persson as soloist and the choirs Bel Canto and Musikaliska Sällskapets Kammarkör. It almost couldn't get better. Here you really get the chance to fill up on all the energy and Christmas spirit needed for the holidays.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold was just eleven years old when he composed the ballet The Snowman . The piece's musical brilliance caused such a sensation that even the emperor took notice of the child prodigy's creation and commissioned a performance at the Imperial and Royal Court Opera. This year, excerpts from The Snowman, reminiscent of Tchaikovsky's great ballets, will open the Christmas concert, in which the KSO and the City Theater Chorus will strike a festive, contemplative, and cheerful tone—including Mozart's Ave verum corpus and Leroy Anderson's exhilarating Sleigh Ride .

British baritone Rodney Earl Clarke captured every heart when he starred in the Halle’s Christmas Concert a couple of years ago. We couldn’t wait to bring him back, so here he is with a sack full of treats for the festive period, including operatic and Hollywood favourites, as well as some chestnut-roasting seasonal classics. Our master of ceremonies is genial conductor Stephen Bell, who’ll be taking us through a roll call of Christmas hits from Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov and heartwarming movie music from Home Alone to Frozen. And as it’s Christmas you can enjoy some good old-fashioned audience participation singing along with White Christmas and trying to keep up with the reindeer in Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride.

Local favorites Steve and Allison Martin join HSO for festive selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s classic Sleigh Ride, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and some of the Martins’ favorite songs, including “The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.”  Rounding out the family-friendly concert will be the audience favorite “Christmas Singalong,” full of well-known holiday carols! Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University.  He has taught at the college level and is now Director of Music and Fine Arts at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

The evening will commence with the lobby opening at 6:30 pm, followed by the concert beginning at 7:30 pm. Cynthia Yeh, renowned for her role as principal percussionist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since June 2007, brings her extraordinary skills to the forefront of this performance. With a rich background that includes serving as principal percussionist for the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and holding degrees from the University of British Columbia and Temple University, Yeh's participation promises to elevate the evening's musical offerings.

Don't be happy too late is the inversion of the well-known motto. Or as a classic: "Always look on the bright side of life". The motto comes from the comedy troupe Monty Python and is still apt. Children and fools are in a good mood and they tell the truth. They dare to do things that are not otherwise appropriate: to be blunt and direct, to hold up a mirror to others, to look at themselves in it, not to take themselves too seriously and to infect others with their anarchic cheerfulness. Sometimes fools also fib. Never mind. When you laugh, you recognize a truth that you would otherwise only suspect through deep thought. A New Year's concert about fools and comedians in music.
