From his beginnings as a teen prodigy, to his groundbreaking solo work with Shanachie Records, to his founding of Irish-American powerhouse band Solas, to his current work as one of the leading composers and interpreters of the tradition, Seamus Egan has inspired multiple generations of musicians and helped define the sound of Irish music today. His work as a film composer and musical director of countless live shows has allowed Egan to experience music’s unique ability to tell stories. And what season is more about stories than the season of Christmas! Tradition, ritual, and collective memory, all come together in Seamus Egan’s Good Winter: A Celtic Christmas with Moira Smiley and Yann Falquet. Songs of the season, original songs, traditional and original music, poetry and spoken word seamlessly weaving together to create an intimate story full of joy, humor, and reverie. Combining fiddle, flute, whistle, guitar, banjo, piano and piano accordion with vocals to raise the rafters in celebration, Seamus Egan’s Good Winter: A Celtic Christmas is sure to brighten the darkest midnight. We invite you to “push the old year against the wall and welcome in the new” and celebrate the holiday season with us! We are excited to have Seamus joined by Moira Smiley, an American singer, composer, and musician who performs on banjo, accordion, piano, and body percussion, as well as Blackstone River Theatre favorite Yann Falquet who plays guitar and sings with the Quebecois group, Genticorum.

Effervescent and engaging, Boston-based fiddler Hanneke Cassel’s fiddle music fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton with Americana grooves and musical innovations. Her music is a blend of the contemporary and traditional, described by the Boston Globe as “exuberant and rhythmic, somehow wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness.”  For this duo project, Hanneke joins forces with pianist Dave Wiesler who has built a national reputation for his rhythmic and innovative piano playing, and his sensitive accompaniment of dance music, choruses, and soloists.  Hanneke and Dave have played together for over 20 years, recorded together on six albums, and have toured the East coast of the United States and across France, performing concerts and playing for Scottish Country Dances.

With multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, Genticorum have earned a reputation as a leading voice in the evolution of Québécois traditional music. For over twenty years, the trio has earned a place of privilege on world, traditional, folk and Celtic music stages. Solstice Festival favorites, they are known for their unbridled energy, their musicianship, and their magnetic stage presence. Pascal Gemme (fiddle) and Yann Falquet (guitar), the group’s two founding members, are both recognized individually as major contributors to the trad music scene in Québec. Since 2015, they have been joined by accomplished multi-instrumentalist and composer Nicholas Williams (flute, accordion). Together, they weave precise and intricate fiddle, flute, and accordion work, gorgeous vocal harmonies,and energetic foot percussion and guitar accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast.
