Join us for an enchanting evening of dance and music at the "Oh Flying Shoes Dance" event, hosted at the Rockport Opera House on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. This special Community Dance & Contra Dance is presented by Belfast Flying Shoes, the Rockport Opera House, and the Town of Rockport, featuring the extraordinary talents of Eloise & Co. with calling by the renowned dance leader, Lisa Greenleaf.

The evening kicks off at 6:30 PM with simple and accessible community dances suitable for all ages, ensuring everyone can join in the fun. These dances include contras with gender-neutral role terms and a selection of couple dances like the waltz, polka, and schottische, creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for both new dancers and experienced enthusiasts.

Music for the event is provided by the All Comers Band, a unique ensemble open to musicians of all ages, instruments, and skill levels. Musicians are invited to warm up at 6:00 PM, with tunes available at belfastflyingshoes.org. At 8:00 PM, the evening transitions to a contra dance called by Lisa Greenleaf, accompanied by the mesmerizing music of Eloise & Co., featuring Becky Tracy, Rachel Bell, and Bethany Waickman. Lisa Greenleaf, highly regarded for her wit and vast repertoire, ensures a connection-filled experience for dancers, while Eloise & Co. bring their electrifying grit and spacious beauty to reels, jigs, and waltzes.

The Rockport Opera House, located at 6 Central Street in downtown Rockport, provides the perfect setting for this intergenerational and chem-free program. Admission is on a sliding scale of $15-$25, or $1 for kids and $2 for adults only participating in the Community Dance. Tickets are available at the door only.

With engaging stage presence and masterfully-crafted music, Boston-based Matt and Shannon Heaton offer well-travelled Irish music from the heart. Their new album “Whirring Wings” is a seamless blend of brand-new and centuries-old music. The title comes from Robert Burns’ line “the moorcock springs on whirring wings,” and the Heatons took it as stimulus to find lift and space with favorite tunes on flute, guitar, and bouzouki. The Heatons are an integral part of Boston’s vibrant trad music scene. Shannon cofounded Boston’s Celtic Music Fest and was named Mass. Traditional Artist Fellow in 2016. She also hosts the culture podcast “Irish Music Stories.” Matt has performed with the Karan Casey Band, Boys of the Lough, Robbie O’Connell and many others.
