Once again celebrating the very best in American classical music, IPO, together with co-presenter American Music Project in conjunction with their 10th Anniversary, opens its 47th season on September 21st, 2024 at 5:30PM with Three Great American Symphonies. “The Diamond Second is an epic wartime work and, arguably, the great American symphony,” explains Lawrence Johnson of AMP. “I’m delighted that Stilian feels as strongly about this piece as I do and that we will be able to bring this music, as well as the Still and Vincent symphonies, to a local audience.”

Pianist Awadagin Pratt joins Daniel Hope and New Century for this program of potent 20th century American works for strings that speak to our collective emotions. Coping with the senselessness of war is the heartbeat of the program’s first half, with composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson confronting his concerns about the Korean War through his work Grass. In contrast, composer David Diamond wrote his exuberant work Rounds to dispel the gloomy wartime mood of the 1940s in vivid fashion. The program closes with Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium), an epic work for solo violin, strings and percussion inspired by the ancient Greek debate over love in its many forms.

Samy Moussa has burst onto the music scene winning plaudits for his compositions and his conducting alike. For his Ensemble 10:10 debut, he brings compelling composers rarely heard on these shores – Jacques Hétu (from Canada) and David Diamond (from the US), but also serene music from the UK’s Edmund Finnis. Moussa also introduces us to his acclaimed Violin Concerto with a UK premiere starring our very own Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Leader, Thelma Handy as soloist. Moussa’s music is described as ‘dazzlingly coloristic’, full of ‘intoxicated harmonies and noisy energy’ – this concert will encompass all that and more.

Music Director Daniel Hope leads New Century Chamber Orchestra in a program of works from the mid-20th century that shaped the American sound for a new generation, headlined by Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite, in its intimate original setting for 13 instruments. American soprano Leah Hawkins joins New Century for a collection of works highlighting influential voices from the Harlem Renaissance, including William Grant Still, Florence Price, Duke Ellington and Harry Lawrence Freeman.
