The most traditional way to celebrate Christmas is to turn to Gregorian chant. The Tallis Scholars do this in three different styles: the interpretation of it by the 12th century abbess Hildegard of Bingen (these are her own compositions); the living Gregorian tradition as shown in settings of the Salve regina and Nunc dimittis, and as adapted in the medieval popular song In dulci jubilo; and Arvo Pärt’s reimagining of this tradition, partly in the Orthodox view. In particular there is his Da pacem, where the alto voice quotes a whole chant melody, running from start to finish of the piece. For a thousand years, chant represented all there was of ‘classical’ music. And it remains second to none in evoking the atmosphere of the great feast days.

The Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal and the Orchestre Métropolitain are coming together with the Chœur Métropolitain and singers Laura Anglade, Ranee Lee, Kim Richardson and Dawn Tyler Watson for this major concert. Your favourite Christmas, orchestral, jazz and pop classics are on the program, in an updated arrangement by Antoine Gratton.

Eight singers, a conductor, choral settings for the great biblical hymn about love, the Song of Songs, plus songs about flowers: the a cappella program of the British Marian Consort offers stimulation for all the senses and pure seduction. In addition, you experience music history in fast forward, starting with music of the late Renaissance, lingering longer with Benjamin Britten's Five Flower Songs , which are composed in the style of Edward Elgar, Charles Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford, and ending with two commissioned works. One of them, composed by the British Laura Cannell, dares to combine folk, old and experimental new music. This suits an ensemble that has earned itself the reputation of a vocal pioneering group in program compilation and presentation. Rory McCleery conducts the program, the intense sound of which should unfold optimally in the wide space of the Trinity Church in Speyer.

The members of the Azahar Ensemble all come from Spain - but what does that mean? Spain is more than just castanets, fandango and flamenco. The country consists of different regions with very different cultures, and with a corresponding panoramic view, the five musicians on flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon want to introduce themselves and their country in this night concert. Their program ranges from Catalonia to Galicia to Andalusia, from sacred music of the 16th century to chamber music of the mid-20th century. You can hear arrangements of folk songs, a fantasia after Domenico Scarlatti by Miquel Ramos, and we get to know two composers with the surname Turina, a grandfather and his grandson. Grandfather Joaquín pays homage to his birthplace Seville in his Opus 2, grandson José Luis has written a virtuoso wind quintet entitled Quinteto de Agua , and the Azahar Ensemble will do everything in its power to make the premiere of this entertaining piece a lavish sound festival.
