Stage Director

The San Francisco Girls Chorus, under the direction of Artistic Director and Conductor Valérie Sainte-Agathe, presents the world premiere of Tomorrow’s Memories: A Little Manila Diary, a new SFGC-commissioned choral-opera from American composer Matthew Welch.

A collaborative project three years in the making, this semi-staged work, featuring SFGC's award-winning Premier Ensemble, is based on the 1924-1928 diary writings of Filipina immigrant Angeles Monrayo and highlights the importance of the Filipino diaspora’s cultural impact throughout the United States, particularly in the Bay Area. Featured guest artists for this program include stage director Sean San José, guitarist Florante Aguilar, violinist Patti Kilroy and percussionist Haruka Fujii.

Marc Anthony Thompson is a world renowned composer, songwriter, musician, performer- who has spent the past two decades creating new performance pieces for the stage with the great Roger Guenveur Smith. In his first full fledged play, Marc Anthony takes us into an inspired true story of  a couple who miraculously escaped from chattel slavery from a plantation in Georgia to freedom in Boston. A provocation in Black creation, from its brazen title to the intentional inversion of minstrelsy, this genre-shattering piece will layer original music, movement, and film and engage us in the horror and humor of history masterfully retold.
