A new artistic impulse that emphasized extreme emotions and sublime moments emerged around 1770 that is prominently exhibited in the instrumental works of C. P. E. Bach and Joseph Haydn, and became the defining aesthetic of the German dramatic and poetic “Sturm und Drang” (“Storm and Stress”) movement, exemplified by the early writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The Hillsdale 18th-Century Chamber Orchestra’s second salon of the semester features symphonies by Haydn and C. P. E. Bach, interspersed with portions of Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther and other emotionally charged literature from the period that parallel the emotive poignancy of the music.
