Whether he’s collaborating with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Creative Chair for Jazz or dialing in outer-space sounds on his keytar, Herbie Hancock is always on the move. Since making a splash with the Chicago Symphony at the age of 11 – when he played the soloist’s role for a Mozart piano concerto – and winding through his time as a member of Miles Davis’ legendary Second Great Quintet, he has become one of the most revered and innovative musicians in jazz history. His restless reinventive spirit has found him exploring African music, funk, classical, electronic music, hip-hop, and more. He returns to the Hollywood Bowl stage for a night of freewheeling and thought-provoking jazz.

Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960's. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet that pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz, he also developed new approaches on his own recordings, followed by his work in the 70s — with record-breaking albums such as "Headhunters" — that combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. "Rockit" and "Future Shock" marked Hancock's foray into electronic dance sounds; during the same period he also continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P.

Chicago native Herbie Hancock returns to the Orchestra Hall stage for the 14th time. In his 26-year history with the series, he has thrilled audiences with “expansive, free-ranging, densely textured performances” (Chicago Tribune) and a devotion to evolving the genre through “cross-pollination, adventurism and faith in what’s ahead” (The New York Times).
