The program showcases Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The vibrant musical depictions of Viktor Hartmann’s paintings, including the majestic Great Gate of Kiev, have been inspiring audiences for generations. Fourteen-year-old Japanese violinist Himari has been described as a once-in-a-generation talent. The prodigy will perform Bruch’s richly Romantic Violin Concerto No. 1. Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Abels is best known for his genre-defying scores for the Jordan Peele films Get Out, Us, and Nope. His work Amplify was co-commissioned by Sarasota Orchestra.

Violinist Randall Goosby returns to the San Francisco Symphony for an Edward Gardner–led program featuring Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto. Although Bruch lived to be 82 and produced an impressive catalogue of music, he never wrote anything as enduringly popular as his First Violin Concerto. It was an immediate hit, interspersing Hungarian-spiced licks with plenty of crowd-pleasing passagework. Gustav Holst had many esoteric interests, including astrology. The seven movements of The Planets, his best-known composition, range from the brutal rhythms and spooky effects of “Mars, the Bringer of War” to the dissonance and tolling bells of “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age,” and the closer, “Neptune, the Mystic,” which calls to mind an Impressionist painting of outer space.

The stage is filled to bursting point when Copenhagen Phil, together with their colleagues in the Odense Symphony Orchestra and their chief conductor Pierre Bleuse, plays Richard Strauss' mammoth work, the Alpine Symphony . "The Art of Fugue" is, quite bluntly put, a collection of compositions on a theme whose possibilities are systematically explored. Here, Johann Sebastian Bach not only employs various types of fugues (simple fugue, counter-fugue, double fugue, triple fugue, mirror fugue, canon) and their traditional forms (inversion, augmentation, and reduction), but also other, more general musical means. Swedish Malin Broman has been concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2008, and she also has an international career as a soloist and conductor. The evening's program is framed by two works for the ensemble of piano, viola and clarinet, an ensemble for which Mozart was the first to write a work back in 1786, which was to have a significant impact on the spread of the clarinet as a classical instrument. “Back in My Day” offers a generational 300-year history of the orchestra and western music, with pieces from the early 1700s (e.g. Handel’s Water Music) to popular movie scores of the new millennium. Visible from afar, the imposing Elbphilharmonie building towers over Hamburg's Hafencity as the metropolis's new landmark and one of the world's most exciting concert venues. The Duisburg Philharmonic's invitation to make its debut there in September is also a sign of the esteem in which this traditional orchestra is held far beyond the borders of its home city - a philharmonic accolade, so to speak. And for this special occasion, conductor Stefan Blunier has put together a program that revels in the most beautiful Romantic tones: Among the most popular operas of all time is "Der Freischütz", for whose overture Carl Maria von Weber anticipated the greatest hits of his Romantic opera. Full of catchy melodies, the yearning and melancholy First Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, played by Diana Tishchenko, a well-known singer to Duisburg audiences, follows . And finally, Antonín Dvořák's Eighth Symphony, a work overflowing with musical ideas. The "melodies just fly to me," the composer wrote of this cheerful and life-affirming work, for which he borrowed some themes from Bohemian folk music. On June 29, 2024, Nabil Shehata gave his farewell performance as artistic director of the Südwestfalen Philharmonic. A search committee consisting of representatives from the orchestra, the sponsoring association, the support association, and district politicians, chaired by the district administrator, is currently deliberating on who he will pass the baton to.

Thierry Escaich is a guest in the chamber music series, presenting highlights such as Mozart's "Kegelstatt" Trio and Schumann's "Märchenerzählungen" (Fairy Tales), as well as his own virtuosic "Trio américain," both as a chamber music partner and as a gifted improviser. Mozart's Trio for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano once marked the birth of a new instrumental formation, to which Schumann offered his first musical response 70 years later. After hearing the "Kegelstatt" Trio with his wife Clara at the piano, he made his decision and composed his four wonderfully poetic pieces in a very short time, during a final creative frenzy before his ultimate collapse. Schumann is also the subject of a piano improvisation by Thierry Escaich in this program, who in turn evokes reminiscences from much earlier eras in his own Trio – "one thing works and lives within the other," thus creating a truly exceptional concert.

A magnificent mosaic of magnificent compositions and exceptional musicians: a concert evening with the LGT Young Soloists promises nothing less. The highly talented young members hail from over 20 nations, all performing as soloists and accompanying musicians. Since its founding in 2013, the ensemble has enjoyed success with this concept; two years ago, it made its US debut and toured internationally through Australia, Asia, and North America. Under the direction of their founder, Alexander Gilman, the LGT Young Soloists will present serene string divertimenti, romantic and wistful works by Max Bruch, baroque lightness from Schnittke's new music, Paganini virtuosity on the double bass, and, last but not least, the passionate tango counterpart to Vivaldi's classic "The Seasons."

But I wonder if we will still arrive in Scotland with dry shoes when we are going to experience our Danish superstar Nicolaj Znaider in one of his increasingly rare appearances as a soloist on Danish soil in Max Bruch's  Scottish Fantasy – a violin concerto in every way except name. Max Bruch was bitten by a mad Scotsman and so fascinated by the wild people to the north that when he found a sheet music book with folk melodies from the proud people, he simply had to use them. It became a violin concerto, which he did not want to call that because he had stolen them all – but that does not make them any less languid and beautiful in Bruch's warm orchestrations. And in the hands of Nicolai Znaider, we dare say that the wall coverings almost melt in Tivoli's Concert Hall in this rarely heard gem.

With nearly 7500 concerts in more than 500 cities and 64 countries, the Bamberg Symphony regularly tours the USA, South America and Asia as cultural diplomats for Bavaria and all of Germany. Our guest appearances in Asia in particular have a long-standing tradition: the first trip to China took place in 1986, followed by a tour to Taiwan in 1990. In Japan, we have already played a total of 125 concerts on 15 tours. This year, we are travelling to Japan, Korea and Taiwan again, where in the spring of 2023 we celebrated sensational success in front of sold-out halls. However, as a travelling orchestra, we are particularly committed to minimising the environmental impact of our tours and guest performances. For this reason, our travel planning in the current season also includes several residencies with more than one concert in one place. In Taiwan and Korea, we will again stay a few days longer to present education projects on location. We are compensating for our carbon footprint with climate protection projects that have a local impact and a positive side effect on society and the environment. As we did in 2023, we will be supporting a reforestation project in Seoul.

Beethoven's Trio op. 11 was called the "Gassenhauer Trio" because of the variation theme, which was very popular at the time. With Max Bruch's virtuoso pieces for clarinet trio and Poulenc's duo, the program draws a connection to the sound worlds of saxophonist Daniel Schnyder, who has found his own way in "Worlds Beyond" on a fine line between classical, avant-garde and jazz. Four bassoons "speak" in the composition by Wynton Marsalis, who is at home between classical and jazz, bringing an instrument that is rarely heard as a soloist from the back rows of the orchestra to the podium ramp.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan Academy regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. As can be expected at a lunch concert, catering is available from 12 noon until shortly before the concert begins.

Vasily Petrenko has made a habit of spine-tingling, sell-out performances in Nottingham and this one will be no exception, as he’s joined by the brilliant American violinist Esther Yoo for a programme that’s high on drama and passion. The youngest winner of the Jean Sibelius Violin Competition and former BBC New Generation Artist has been described as ‘the model of a violin soloist in the modern age’ (The Strad) and her highly expressive playing is tailor-made for Bruch’s ripely Romantic and virtuosic First Violin Concerto.
