The subject of "nature" or "landscape" is frequently used in music as a reflection of the external world, but also as an expression of inner feelings. Composers draw on the sounds, rhythms, and moods provided by nature to make images, atmospheres, or specific emotions audible. In his Sixth Symphony, the "Pastoral," Ludwig van Beethoven depicts a rural idyll with unprecedented vividness: the babbling of the brook, the call of the cuckoo, or the thunder of the storm are not ends in themselves, but rather contribute to a higher level of expression that guarantees the formal rigor and meaningfulness of the symphony. In his "Scottish Fantasy" for solo violin, Max Bruch achieves an atmospheric tone painting full of local color through the use of Scottish folk songs, inspired by the novels of Sir Walter Scott, even though he never actually set foot in Scotland. A similar subtle connection between nature and emotion can be found in Frederick Delius's "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring": Here, the call of the cuckoo becomes the initial inspiration, unfolding a delicate, impressionistic soundscape. Delius eschews programmatic effects in the classical sense, allowing the music to grow organically from moods, colors, and melodic suggestions, so that nature is not merely observed but poetically experienced. As with Beethoven and Bruch, nature here becomes a medium that transcends mere imitation and reveals inner resonances. This demonstrates that landscape painting in music is always more than mere tone painting: It connects external impressions with inner feeling and opens a direct path to moods that words often cannot express.

When Beethoven wanted to unwind, he headed for the countryside, and with its birdsong, its mountain streams and its summer storms, there’s still no better example of a composer in harmony with nature than his lovely ‘Pastoral’ Symphony. Add the world’s favourite violin concerto, played by Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, and you could hardly ask for more melody in a single concert. But nature is nothing if not dynamic, and Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s CATAMORPHOSIS is charged with all the brooding, volcanic power of her native Iceland.

At the age of 15, violinist Daniel Lozakovich signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. He will perform Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, one of the most popular concertos of the 19th century. In the second half of the concert, Klaus Mäkelä and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will interpret Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5. The Concertgebouw Orchestra has one of the longest Mahler traditions in the world. It was the first orchestra to popularize Mahler's works in Europe and continues to cultivate this tradition to this day.

We are joined by Esme Greenwood as the centrepiece in our Spring concert to play Bruch’s Violin Concerto. From Sheffield, Esme started learning the violin at the age of 6, and is a precocious talent. Currently studying at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music she won her first competition two years ago when aged only 12. Not only a budding soloist, she also enjoys orchestral and chamber music, recently becoming one of the youngest players to be awarded a place in the National Youth Orchestra, which sees her performing in some of the country’s major concert venues including the Barbican, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.

World class cellist Mischa Maisky joins Christoph Eschenbach as he returns to the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra for an evening of captivating Romantic works. Mendelssohn’s Ruy Blas Overture sets a dramatic tone, followed by Tchaikovsky’s Nocturne for Cello and Orchestra, where Maisky’s emotive playing brings the lyrical beauty to the forefront. Bruch’s Kol Nidrei showcases the cello’s rich, mournful voice, before Respighi’s Adagio con variazione offers a moment of reflective tranquillity. As a conductor, he has the chance to "paint with a huge brush," says Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider. As a violinist, the brush is considerably smaller. Szeps-Znaider knows and can do both: He is one of the few who are equally successful as a violin soloist and conductor, often performing both roles in one evening – as in this concert with the hr Symphony Orchestra. "I was simply curious and only knew the diverse orchestral and operatic repertoire as a listener," explains the Copenhagen-born musician with Polish roots, justifying his dual career. "Ultimately, the repertoire for solo violinists was too narrow for me." And narrowness simply doesn't suit this artist's understanding of music, who is incredibly reflective and undogmatic, even when dealing with such well-known violin concertos as the popular one in G minor by Max Bruch. Questioning every note in relation to the whole is Szeps-Znaider's credo – "that's why playing it feels to me as if I'm discovering the piece for the very first time. It's never boring." Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider can be experienced as both violinist and conductor, performing two absolute classics – Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 and Dvořák's Symphony No. 7 – as well as a surprising orchestral work by the featured artist Unsuk Chin.

In February, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) will welcome British conductor Jonathan Bloxham for a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica—a revolutionary work that marked a turning point in orchestral music, echoing the ideals of the French Revolution. ERSO’s principal clarinetist Soo-Young Lee will join acclaimed German violist Nils Mönkemeyer to perform Max Bruch’s Concerto for Clarinet, Viola and Orchestra. The concert opens with the Faust Overture by 19th-century German composer Emilie Mayer.

The Soviet authorities called it an “optimistic tragedy”. Shostakovich simply called it his Tenth Symphony. Dark, tense, packed with secret messages and featuring a hair-raising musical portrait of Stalin himself; what’s certain is that Shostakovich’s Tenth is one of the mightiest of 20th-century symphonies – one of those pieces that you simply have to hear live.

Critics have described the conductor Daniel Raiskin as “stunningly good”, so who better to probe Shostakovich’s secrets – and to partner the distinguished British violinist Jennifer Pike in Britain’s favourite romantic violin concerto?

The Sitkovetsky Trio is a well-established and exceptional piano trio, having previously received the BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Music Award. This  concert starts with a fresh interpretation of works from Max Bruch’s ‘Eight Pieces’, (originally written for piano, viola and clarinet), that allows each of the trio’s soloist talents to shine through in turn. The concert’s a rare opportunity to hear music by French composer Cècile Chaminade. In 1913, she was awarded the Légion d’Honneur, a first for a female composer. Her Piano Trio No. 2 in A min is a work filled with gorgeous and lyrical melodies, as is the concert’s finale work, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 in C Major.

A violist of international reputation, Roberto Díaz is president and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music, following in the footsteps of renowned soloist/directors such as Josef Hofmann, Efrem Zimbalist, and Rudolf Serkin. As a teacher of viola at Curtis and former principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Mr. Díaz has already had a significant impact on American musical life and continues to do so in his dual roles as performer and educator. Since founding Curtis on Tour in 2007, Mr. Díaz has taken this successful initiative to North and South America, Europe, and Asia, performing chamber music side-by-side with Curtis students and other faculty and alumni of the school.

The program showcases Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The vibrant musical depictions of Viktor Hartmann’s paintings, including the majestic Great Gate of Kiev, have been inspiring audiences for generations. Fourteen-year-old Japanese violinist Himari has been described as a once-in-a-generation talent. The prodigy will perform Bruch’s richly Romantic Violin Concerto No. 1. Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Abels is best known for his genre-defying scores for the Jordan Peele films Get Out, Us, and Nope. His work Amplify was co-commissioned by Sarasota Orchestra.

Violinist Randall Goosby returns to the San Francisco Symphony for an Edward Gardner–led program featuring Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto. Although Bruch lived to be 82 and produced an impressive catalogue of music, he never wrote anything as enduringly popular as his First Violin Concerto. It was an immediate hit, interspersing Hungarian-spiced licks with plenty of crowd-pleasing passagework. Gustav Holst had many esoteric interests, including astrology. The seven movements of The Planets, his best-known composition, range from the brutal rhythms and spooky effects of “Mars, the Bringer of War” to the dissonance and tolling bells of “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age,” and the closer, “Neptune, the Mystic,” which calls to mind an Impressionist painting of outer space.

What's twice as cool as one symphony orchestra? Two symphony orchestras! The stage is filled to bursting point when Copenhagen Phil, together with their colleagues in the Odense Symphony Orchestra and their chief conductor Pierre Bleuse, plays Richard Strauss' mammoth work, the Alpine Symphony . The whole splendor begins with Bruch's atmospheric violin concerto – a favorite among musicians and audiences – with the 19-year-old Danish talent, Selma Teilmann, as soloist.

"The Art of Fugue" is, quite bluntly put, a collection of compositions on a theme whose possibilities are systematically explored. Here, Johann Sebastian Bach not only employs various types of fugues (simple fugue, counter-fugue, double fugue, triple fugue, mirror fugue, canon) and their traditional forms (inversion, augmentation, and reduction), but also other, more general musical means. Under Bach's hands, the project of a practical teaching tool attained an unexpected quality and, despite all its erudition, remains pure music of infectious vitality and typically Bachian expressiveness.

Vivid and emotional, the third program on our Masterworks series features the lively rhythms of Scottish folk music. Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances leads into Bruch’s virtuosic Scottish Fantasy, performed by American violinist Stefan Jackiw in his Des Moines debut. The concert closes with Beethoven’s triumphant masterpiece, the Eroica Symphony.
