Wynton Marsalis’ Liberty promises a vivid musical portrait of America at 250, told in the singular voice of a composer who uses the language of jazz to illuminate the nation’s stories. A true documentarian of American history through sound, Marsalis brings a perspective that is both celebratory and clear-eyed, weaving narrative and rhythm into a distinctly American tapestry. Nicola Benedetti then gifts us a performance of Bruch’s beloved Violin Concerto, which grips the listener from its very first phrase and gathers momentum until the entire orchestra seems to glow from within. Urgent and emotional, the concerto lays its heart bare on the way to a fiery, exhilarating finish.

The subject of "nature" or "landscape" is frequently used in music as a reflection of the external world, but also as an expression of inner feelings. Composers draw on the sounds, rhythms, and moods provided by nature to make images, atmospheres, or specific emotions audible. In his Sixth Symphony, the "Pastoral," Ludwig van Beethoven depicts a rural idyll with unprecedented vividness: the babbling of the brook, the call of the cuckoo, or the thunder of the storm are not ends in themselves, but rather contribute to a higher level of expression that guarantees the formal rigor and meaningfulness of the symphony. In his "Scottish Fantasy" for solo violin, Max Bruch achieves an atmospheric tone painting full of local color through the use of Scottish folk songs, inspired by the novels of Sir Walter Scott, even though he never actually set foot in Scotland. A similar subtle connection between nature and emotion can be found in Frederick Delius's "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring": Here, the call of the cuckoo becomes the initial inspiration, unfolding a delicate, impressionistic soundscape. Delius eschews programmatic effects in the classical sense, allowing the music to grow organically from moods, colors, and melodic suggestions, so that nature is not merely observed but poetically experienced. As with Beethoven and Bruch, nature here becomes a medium that transcends mere imitation and reveals inner resonances. This demonstrates that landscape painting in music is always more than mere tone painting: It connects external impressions with inner feeling and opens a direct path to moods that words often cannot express.

Three eminent musicians, clarinetist James Campbell, cellist Cameron Crozman, and pianist Meagan Milatz—all originally from the Prairies—join forces for a program rich in lyricism, virtuosity, and storytelling. Beethoven’s early clarinet trio brims with wit and bold originality, showcasing a young composer eager to push boundaries. A new suite for cello and piano written for Meagan and Cameron by James’s son, Graham Campbell, adds an exciting new voice, infused with jazz rhythms and sweeping landscapes. Brahms’s late clarinet trio offers a window into the introspective character of the composer. Written for his close friend and favourite clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, a deep personal expression emerges from the supreme blending of the three instruments.

When Beethoven wanted to unwind, he headed for the countryside, and with its birdsong, its mountain streams and its summer storms, there’s still no better example of a composer in harmony with nature than his lovely ‘Pastoral’ Symphony. As a conductor, he has the chance to paint with a ‘huge brush’, says Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider. As a violinist, the brush is much smaller. Szeps-Znaider knows and can do both: he is one of the few people who are equally successful as a violin soloist and conductor, and is happy to do both on the same evening - as in this concert by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. ‘I was simply curious and only knew the diverse orchestral and operatic literature as a listener,’ says the Copenhagen-born musician with Polish roots, explaining his dual career path. ‘The repertoire for solo violinists was ultimately too narrow for me.’ And narrowness simply does not suit the musical understanding of this artist, who knows how to deal with even such well-known violin concertos as the popular one in G minor by Max Bruch in an incredibly reflective and undogmatic way. Szeps-Znaider's credo is to scrutinise every note for its relationship to the whole - ‘that's why when I play it, it feels like I'm discovering the piece for the first time. It's never boring.’ Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider can be experienced as a violinist and conductor with two absolute classics - Bruch's 1st Violin Concerto and Dvořák's 7th Symphony - as well as surprising orchestral music by focus artist Unsuk Chin (hr-Sinfonieorchester).

The Soviet authorities called it an “optimistic tragedy”. Shostakovich simply called it his Tenth Symphony.
