We are joined by Esme Greenwood as the centrepiece in our Spring concert to play Bruch’s Violin Concerto. From Sheffield, Esme started learning the violin at the age of 6, and is a precocious talent. Currently studying at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music she won her first competition two years ago when aged only 12. Not only a budding soloist, she also enjoys orchestral and chamber music, recently becoming one of the youngest players to be awarded a place in the National Youth Orchestra, which sees her performing in some of the country’s major concert venues including the Barbican, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.

As a conductor, he has the chance to paint with a ‘huge brush’, says Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider. As a violinist, the brush is much smaller. Szeps-Znaider knows and can do both: he is one of the few people who are equally successful as a violin soloist and conductor, and is happy to do both on the same evening - as in this concert by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. ‘I was simply curious and only knew the diverse orchestral and operatic literature as a listener,’ says the Copenhagen-born musician with Polish roots, explaining his dual career path. ‘The repertoire for solo violinists was ultimately too narrow for me.’ And narrowness simply does not suit the musical understanding of this artist, who knows how to deal with even such well-known violin concertos as the popular one in G minor by Max Bruch in an incredibly reflective and undogmatic way. Szeps-Znaider's credo is to scrutinise every note for its relationship to the whole - ‘that's why when I play it, it feels like I'm discovering the piece for the first time. In February, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) will welcome British conductor Jonathan Bloxham for a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica—a revolutionary work that marked a turning point in orchestral music, echoing the ideals of the French Revolution. ERSO’s principal clarinetist Soo-Young Lee will join acclaimed German violist Nils Mönkemeyer to perform Max Bruch’s Concerto for Clarinet, Viola and Orchestra. The concert opens with the Faust Overture by 19th-century German composer Emilie Mayer.

Critics have described the conductor Daniel Raiskin as “stunningly good”, so who better to probe Shostakovich’s secrets – and to partner the distinguished British violinist Jennifer Pike in Britain’s favourite romantic violin concerto?

The Sitkovetsky Trio is a well-established and exceptional piano trio, having previously received the BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Music Award. This  concert starts with a fresh interpretation of works from Max Bruch’s ‘Eight Pieces’, (originally written for piano, viola and clarinet), that allows each of the trio’s soloist talents to shine through in turn. The concert’s a rare opportunity to hear music by French composer Cècile Chaminade. In 1913, she was awarded the Légion d’Honneur, a first for a female composer. Her Piano Trio No. 2 in A min is a work filled with gorgeous and lyrical melodies, as is the concert’s finale work, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 in C Major.

Violinist Randall Goosby returns to the San Francisco Symphony for an Edward Gardner–led program featuring Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto. Although Bruch lived to be 82 and produced an impressive catalogue of music, he never wrote anything as enduringly popular as his First Violin Concerto. It was an immediate hit, interspersing Hungarian-spiced licks with plenty of crowd-pleasing passagework. Gustav Holst had many esoteric interests, including astrology. The seven movements of The Planets, his best-known composition, range from the brutal rhythms and spooky effects of “Mars, the Bringer of War” to the dissonance and tolling bells of “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age,” and the closer, “Neptune, the Mystic,” which calls to mind an Impressionist painting of outer space.

What's twice as cool as one symphony orchestra? Two symphony orchestras! The stage is filled to bursting point when Copenhagen Phil, together with their colleagues in the Odense Symphony Orchestra and their chief conductor Pierre Bleuse, plays Richard Strauss' mammoth work, the Alpine Symphony . The whole splendor begins with Bruch's atmospheric violin concerto – a favorite among musicians and audiences – with the 19-year-old Danish talent, Selma Teilmann, as soloist.

"The Art of Fugue" is, quite bluntly put, a collection of compositions on a theme whose possibilities are systematically explored. Swedish Malin Broman has been concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2008, and she also has an international career as a soloist and conductor. “Back in My Day” offers a generational 300-year history of the orchestra and western music, with pieces from the early 1700s (e.g. Handel’s Water Music) to popular movie scores of the new millennium. Visible from afar, the imposing Elbphilharmonie building towers over Hamburg's Hafencity as the metropolis's new landmark and one of the world's most exciting concert venues. The Duisburg Philharmonic's invitation to make its debut there in September is also a sign of the esteem in which this traditional orchestra is held far beyond the borders of its home city - a philharmonic accolade, so to speak. And for this special occasion, conductor Stefan Blunier has put together a program that revels in the most beautiful Romantic tones: Among the most popular operas of all time is "Der Freischütz", for whose overture Carl Maria von Weber anticipated the greatest hits of his Romantic opera. Full of catchy melodies, the yearning and melancholy First Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, played by Diana Tishchenko, a well-known singer to Duisburg audiences, follows . And finally, Antonín Dvořák's Eighth Symphony, a work overflowing with musical ideas. The "melodies just fly to me," the composer wrote of this cheerful and life-affirming work, for which he borrowed some themes from Bohemian folk music. The exuberant orchestral jubilation at the end of the symphony provides a fitting conclusion to this guest performance in the far north.

The Tapiola Sinfonietta's autumn season opens on a romantic note. Elina Vähälä, one of our country's most internationally successful instrumental soloists, interprets Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, the immense popularity of which the composer tried in vain to achieve in his later concerts. Andrew Manze became known as one of the most respected baroque violinists of our time before taking up the baton with a completely different repertoire.

Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma is known worldwide for her polished, expressive and intense playing, and she returns to WASO with Bruch’s ever-popular First Violin Concerto. The dark ambition and ruthless fury of Shakespeare’s iconic tyrant is brought thrillingly to life in Strauss’ early tone poem, Macbeth, performed by WASO for the very first time. Asher Fisch then leads the Orchestra in Schumann’s Symphony No.4, a work of passionate urgency and grand emotions.

Nature and humanity meet in this imaginative program capped by Elgar’s Enigma Variations, an intimate musical portrait of the composer’s closest friends. Associate Conductor Daniel Reith leads this beloved work alongside Bruch’s impassioned and rarely performed Second Violin Concerto, played by Assistant Concertmaster Stephen Tavani. The program opens with a brand-new work by Gabriella Smith, which pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
