Inseparably linked to the "Rhine Romanticism" is the story of the Loreley, who combed her golden hair while singing on a rock so that sailors looked up at her and sailed towards dangerous reefs and shallows of the river. The myth inspired painters,
poets and musicians, including the Rhinelander Max Bruch, who composed "The Loreley" in 1863, a very rarely performed opera. The Violin Concerto in E minor by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is completely different; it has been an indispensable part of concert halls since its premiere in Leipzig in 1845. Just a few years later, in 1850 in Düsseldorf, Robert Schumann's "Rhenish Symphony" was written. It is not a portrait of the river - rather, it combines sound-painting elements in which the Rhineland can be rediscovered.

With his First Violin Concerto, Max Bruch rightfully joins the ranks of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Brahms. Renowned violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim recognized this during its 1866 premiere. Now, South Korean violinist Bomsori enchants with Bruch's masterpiece, showcasing the lyrical power of the violin. Flemish master August De Boeck drew inspiration for his lively Dahomian Rhapsody from street musicians in Brussels playing folk music from Dahomey. Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony offers a different experience—orchestral might alternate with moments of profound intimacy. Tchaikovsky, fearing creative dryness, hoped to gather enough material for just one symphony, but his worry was unfounded. Following this delightful Fifth, a Sixth Symphony awaits on January 10th. The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, led by Shiyeon Sung, bids farewell to its audience in Antwerp with this exquisite program, preceding their tour through Slovenia, Austria and Germany.

This secular oratorio grew out of troubling political events and reflects Tippett’s pacifism in its sincere and profound call for peace. The piece embraces a fascinating array of influences, from Bach’s Passions and Handel’s Messiah to African American spirituals such as ’Deep River’, used like Bach chorales to punctuate the oratorio with folk music, emphasising the work’s universal message. By the end of the work, we have moved from winter to the hope of spring but, as Tippett put it, ’spring with an ache in it’.

Conductor Nikolai Malko was born in Ukraine in 1883, was educated at St. Petersburg and worked as both conductor and teacher, but left what had become the Soviet Union in 1929 and did not return. In return, he gained invaluable importance for e.g. The Radio Symphony Orchestra, now the DR Symphony Orchestra, here in Denmark. He helped to build the orchestra and was on the podium when the first Thursday concert was played in 1933. Although he settled in the USA, he was a regular guest conductor of the orchestra and therefore a few years after his death the first international conducting competition was held under his name. It has been held under the auspices of DR since 1965. It is a competition for young conductors who, in addition to money, probably just as importantly win more engagements so that they can perform as they should - on the podium in front of an orchestra.

Antonio Méndez returns after his terrific SDSO debut last season with a program bursting with overwhelming romantic feelings, surging love-songs and hair-tingling premonitions of melodramatic tragedy and fate. Mendelssohn’s surging and brilliantly orchestrated overture compresses into less than 10 minutes the essence of a play by the French poet Victor Hugo (celebrated author of Les Misérables): a poor poet falls in love with the Queen of Spain, with disastrous consequences for both of them. Max Bruch pours out one melody after another in one of the best-loved violin concertos of all time. And Tchaikovsky thrills us with the tumultuous operatic energy of his Fifth Symphony, complete with doom-laden trumpet-calls, dreamlike dance sequences, rushing strings, and in the slow movement a love song for the solo horn that is one of the sweetest and most heartfelt moments from anywhere in the marvelous composer’s output.

We’re all the heroes of our own lives. Strauss’s contemporaries couldn’t see the funny side of Ein Heldenleben (‘A Hero’s Life’): a riotously tuneful self-portrait of the artist as superhero, written for a colossal orchestra and featuring some of the most stupendous sounds ever imagined. The great Sir Mark Elder brings all his matchless flair for musical storytelling to a concert that opens in the shimmering wonderland of Ravel’s fairytale ballet, and stars Canadian virtuoso James Ehnes in the underrated sequel to Bruch’s ever-popular First Violin Concerto. It’s almost never heard – and it’s a delight.

The world will hardly ever find the unambiguously correct answer to what was the underlying "meaning" of Shostakovich's music. Was there anyone at all? Was he making fun of Stalin or paying tribute to him? Was he an elitist "formalist" who should be shamed and criticized, or a loyal party soldier who did honor to the Soviet state? Or was he really just a privileged official who wrote his music as he pleased and tried to go under the party's radar? Shostakovich spent most of his career falling in and out of favor with the communist authorities. And when the 10th Symphony premiered in December 1953, just nine months after Stalin's death, the expected speculation arose as to whether the work can be considered a musical portrait of the late dictator. This thesis had its supporters - but we can also choose to be content with hearing the 10th as an intensely emotional and dramatic tale of universal, human conditions, emotions and conflicts, written by one of the 20th century's undisputed greatest artists.

Praised for performances that are “all that could be desired, and more,” Massachusetts-born pianist Justin Bartlett has performed in the United States, South America, and France, striving to reach new audiences and to champion fresh repertoire. His solo performances have been featured at Portland Piano International’s Rising Stars Series, where he delivered the world premiere of Michael Johanson’s Eternal Gardens and gave lecture recitals on the music of Szymanowski. He has performed concertos of Bach and Liszt with members of the Oregon Symphony, and his chamber partners have included violinists Alex Kerr and Yehonatan Berick. Outreach programs are also central to his musical work: As a student in Oberlin Conservatory Justin was sent to Ecuador as guest artist and faculty at the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Quito, and he has organized local recitals in Indiana with the proceeds being donated to public school music programs. He earned a B.M. degree at Oberlin Conservatory, where he was granted the Dean’s Talent Scholarship, under the guidance of Robert Shannon. He earned a Doctor of Music in Piano Performance degree with Arnaldo Cohen at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he received a Jacobs Fellowship, the school’s highest academic award. He also benefited greatly from studies with Elisabeth Wright, Émile Naoumoff, and Menahem Pressler. Among his other musical passions have been conducting and harpsichord. Bartlett is adjunct lecturer in piano performance at the Jacobs School, where he also teaches music theory for the String Academy. Beyond music, he nurtured a love of modern ballet as a member of the Oberlin Dance Company.

The string octet offers the best of both worlds, combining the full resonance of a string orchestra with the soloistic virtuosity and clarity of a chamber music ensemble. Max Bruch, an incurable romantic, composed his swansong, the String Octet in B-Flat Major, towards the end of his life. A few years later, Dimitri Shostakovich would embrace modernity in his Prelude and Scherzo, opus 11. Reinhold Glière’s String Octet in D Major strikes a compromise between the two. Virgil is joined by pianist Juyoung Park for Saint-Saëns’ fervent Danse macabre, Bloch’s deeply moving “Nigun,” and other selections from his second album, Incantation, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Also featured are Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in A Minor, and Janáček’s Violin Sonata.

Virtuoso violinist Sarah Chang returns to NatPhil for Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in a program conducted by Maestro Piotr Gajewski. Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is a masterpiece of romantic music with soaring melodies and lush harmonies that make it one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire. Paired with the concerto on the first half of the program is Cuban-born composer Tania León’s Ácana, inspired by Cuban Laureate Poet Nicolás Guillén’s poem dedicated to the towering ácana tree, an essential force in Cuban life and society. León received the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Music and was named a recipient of the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements in 2022.

We close our 80th Masterworks season with a return appearance from Melissa White, the HSO’s 2023-2024 Joyce C. Willis Artist in Residence performing the soaring melodies of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. According to Carlos Simon, his intent for Amen! was “to re-create the musical experience of an African American Pentecostal church service that I enjoyed being part of while growing up in this denomination.” Each movement flows into the next to reflect the way the worship service flows. Inspired by the astrological characters of each planet, Holst’s The Planets bears the richness and emotional warmth of humanity, encapsulating the theme of the entire program bringing people together through the spirit of music.

Robert Schumann composed his Spring Symphony during the wintertime, dreaming of warmer days to come and the signs of life that would soon abound in nature. This sounds like the kind of activity many of us in Minnesota would understand! Thomas Søndergård conducts this bright, joyful symphony and collaborates with Concertmaster Erin Keefe for a performance of Max Bruch’s elegant First Violin Concerto. The Frost Symphony Orchestra will showcase the winners of the FSO Violin and Cello Concerto Competition in two romantic concertos. The German Romantic composer Richard Strauss wrote ten tone poems, and these works are often seen as the high point of the tone poem genre. Till Eulenspiegel’s “Merry Pranks” was the fifth one written in 1895, and it is based on the German folk hero of the same name. Sergei Rachmaninov wrote his last major composition, the Symphonic Dances, in the United States. Premiered by Eugen Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1941, this piece had programmatic origins and many underlying allusions to Rachmaninov’s own life.

Both Elvis Presley and Stanley Kubrick were partial to a (Richard) Strauss sunrise, and his early morning wake-up call for Zarathustra gives us one of music’s most glorious openings ever. The rest of it isn’t half bad either. Strauss’s take on Nietzsche is philosophy “lite” but “full fat” on flair. Gregorian chant, mathematical puzzles and an uplifting Viennese waltz are all whizzed up in a blender to create one of the most sumptuous orchestral pieces ever written. We rewind to the delight of Mozart – the melodies in this symphony are as characterful as anything he wrote in his operas. And taking centre stage is Bruch’s First Violin Concerto – rich melodies, dazzling folk rhythms and a glorious slow movement are just some of the reasons why this Romantic giant repeatedly tops the Classical charts.
