Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 is a perfect match for the local graduation season, and to bring the concert to a resplendent close, Richard Strauss’s suite from his opera Der Rosenkavalier—a lush and emotive masterpiece that carries you through the heart of Vienna’s romantic operatic tradition.

Join us for an exquisite afternoon of violin mastery as Rose Marie Haselhorst takes the stage for her Master of Music recital. This captivating event will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 2:30pm CDT in the Regenstein Master Class Room at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University. 

Rose Marie, a talented student of Blair Milton, will be accompanied by Nathan Canfield on piano, presenting a program that promises to enchant and inspire. The repertoire includes J.S. Bach's profound "Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004," the emotionally charged "Sonata No. 3 in D Minor Ballade, Op. 27" by Eugène Ysaÿe, and Max Bruch's evocative "Scottish Fantasy, Op. 46."

We close our 80th Masterworks season with a return appearance from Melissa White, the HSO’s 2023-2024 Joyce C. Willis Artist in Residence performing the soaring melodies of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. According to Carlos Simon, his intent for Amen! was “to re-create the musical experience of an African American Pentecostal church service that I enjoyed being part of while growing up in this denomination.” Each movement flows into the next to reflect the way the worship service flows. Inspired by the astrological characters of each planet, Holst’s The Planets bears the richness and emotional warmth of humanity, encapsulating the theme of the entire program bringing people together through the spirit of music.

Virtuoso violinist Sarah Chang returns to NatPhil for Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in a program conducted by Maestro Piotr Gajewski. Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is a masterpiece of romantic music with soaring melodies and lush harmonies that make it one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire. Paired with the concerto on the first half of the program is Cuban-born composer Tania León’s Ácana, inspired by Cuban Laureate Poet Nicolás Guillén’s poem dedicated to the towering ácana tree, an essential force in Cuban life and society. León received the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Music and was named a recipient of the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements in 2022.

First, Principal Violist DJ Cheek will perform Bruch’s achingly sweet Romance for viola and orchestra. English horn player Tim Daniels stars as the majestic voice of the swan in Sibelius’ epic tone poem Swan of Tuonela, and Principal Trumpeter Kyle Sherman gives voices to Tartini’s graceful and precise Concerto in D Major, a testament to the splendor of Italian baroque music.

The night will conclude with Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet," a Fantasy Overture that encapsulates the essence of Shakespeare's tragic love story through Tchaikovsky's passionate and genius musical interpretation.
