This unparalleled concert event starts with Spanish Dance No. 1 by de Falla from his opera, La vida breve or "Life is Short". The opera tells the story of Salud, a gypsy girl who is passionately in love with a wealthy man named Paco. He is engaged to be married to someone else and has kept this secret from her. Once the truth is known, Salud and her uncle crash the wedding party and confront the man and his new bride. Paco rejects Salud and in grand opera fashion, she dies of broken heart and collapses at his feet. For its Christmas concert, the OPRL, under the direction of Austrian conductor Christoph Campestrini, explores some major works by composers inspired by the melancholic beauty of winter. In his Seasons , Glazunov delicately evokes the winter season, with its frost, ice, hail, and of course, snow! Taken from an opera about the life of Ukrainian villagers, Rimsky-Korsakov's Christmas Eve suite is adorned with Slavic colors and irresistible picturesque dances. Finally, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 1 captures the beauty and intense emotion of a dreamlike journey to the heart of winter and its misty lands.

The Winter Experience features three remarkable ballets, each promising to enchant and inspire. Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen presents a one-act re-envisioning of Marius Petipa's "Raymonda" as "Raymonda Grand Divertissement." This homage to classical ballet is infused with new choreography and costumes, celebrating the art form's rich heritage while showcasing the technical prowess and expressive capabilities of the Boston Ballet's dancers. The lavish sets, dazzling costumes, and Alexander Glazunov's sumptuous score will transport audiences to a world of exquisite beauty and dramatic storytelling.

Helen Pickett's world premiere of "SISU" draws inspiration from the Finnish concept of inner strength and resilience. This work is a tribute to the courage and tenacity of the ballet community, particularly highlighted during challenging times. Set to the music of Mikael Karlsson, "SISU" is an exploration of change, bravery, vulnerability, and the ephemeral nature of the art of dance.

"Petal," also choreographed by Helen Pickett, offers a sensory feast of motion, light, and music. Dancers navigate the evolution of relationships through sweeping movements and innovative partnering, all set to the vibrant compositions of Philip Glass and Thomas Montgomery Newman. This colorful and dynamic ballet promises to leave audiences feeling fulfilled and hopeful.

Two fifth symphonies from Russia: In 1944, Sergei Prokofiev spent some time in the countryside where he had all the peace and calm he needed in order to compose, while back home in Moscow, people were suffering from hunger and homelessness. What Prokofiev brought to paper is lushly orchestrated, patriotic, and deliberately Russian in its rhythm and melodies. Not to mention a tremendous amount of heroic pathos, in light of the global war against Nazi Germany. In his op. 100, we see the composer as a mature, experienced symphonist, and as grand master of instrumentation. He creates veritable »orchestral paintings« – some lyrical and sumptuous, some dark and warlike.

This season, works for horn can be enjoyed in the chamber concert of the hr Symphony Orchestra in Friedberg - all about hr solo horn player Marc Gruber in a recently modified program. He will be able to be heard in a duo with Beethoven and Glazunov and, as planned, in a sonorous and soulful trio with Brahms. Valentin Kovalev is a passionate and ebullient classical saxophonist seeking to elevate the voice of saxophone in classical music. He has won the most prestigious international saxophone competitions, including the MTNA Competition (USA), Manhattan International Competition (USA), Classic Winds Competition (Israel), Andorra SaxFest (Andorra), Anches Simples de Toulouse (France), EkaterinburgSaxFest (Russia) and Golden Sax (Ukraine).  He is also the recipient of significant awards from Foundation pour la Vocation in France, the Rostropovich Foundation in Russia, and the Musical Fund Society in the United States.

A profound unfolding of stillness and rebirth, Henryk Górecki’s third symphony – Symphony of Sorrowful Songs – not only topped the classical charts but cracked the British pop charts in 1992, selling over a million copies and rocketing the Polish composer into global fame. History can be unkind to composers. It was Alexander Glazunov’s misfortune to be remembered more as the (allegedly) inebriated conductor who ruined the premier of Rachmaninov’s first Symphony, rather than as a supremely gifted composer in his own right. His mentor Rimsky-Korsakov said of the young Glazunov that his ‘development progressed not by the day, but literally by the hour’. He went on to become a highly influential figure in Russian music with an impressive body of innovative and cosmopolitan orchestral works and a gift for glorious melodies.

If you’re not familiar with the music of Glazunov, his concert waltzes are a wonderful place to start. This is the sort of music you can imagine a princess whirling round a packed ballroom to, and Glazunov’s Concert Waltz No.2, which we hear today, blushes with rosy-cheeked colour and romance. Glazunov composed it in 1894, a year after his Fourth Symphony. The 1890s marked the transition for Glazunov from national treasure to international success, and many of his most popular works date from this period. Symphony No.4 is "marvellous, noble and expressive" according to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov who conducted the premiere. And no wonder it was so well received – Glazunov started young when it came to symphonies. He was 16 when he composed his very first, and even at that age, his maturity of expression was staggering.

For twelve years, Lorna, Jenny and Rhian have played together in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This concert will be recorded for CD and all proceeds from the recording will go towards the PSO Musicians’ Care Fund, chaired by Rhian Kenny. The mission of the Fund is to provide musical experiences to all children, regardless of the ability of their family or school district to pay. The symphonic poem "A Night on Bald Mountain" is the only major orchestral work by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, although it was never performed publicly during his lifetime. The piece describes the dance of the witches on Midsummer Night on Lyssaja gora ("Bald Mountain"), a place in Slavic mythology that, like Blocksberg, is considered a meeting place for witches. Walt Disney, among others, used the music of this work in Leopold Stokowski's adaptation as part of his animated film "Fantasia" in concise scenes.

Wilmington Symphony’s River Rhapsody concert will feature Schumann’s final symphony, Symphony No. 3, "Rhenish," which drew inspiration from one of Europe’s main rivers, the majestic Rhine River.

In addition, the concert will showcase the exceptional talents of the High School and UNCW Division winners of our 48th annual Richard R. Deas Young Artist Concerto Competition. Emily Bullard, High School Division winner and harpist, will perform Aria in Classic Style, Op. 19 by Marcel Grandjany. UNCW Division winner, Nicholas Strickland, will perform Alex Glazunov’s Concerto in E-flat major, Op. 109 on alto saxophone.
