The Winter Experience features three remarkable ballets, each promising to enchant and inspire. Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen presents a one-act re-envisioning of Marius Petipa's "Raymonda" as "Raymonda Grand Divertissement." This homage to classical ballet is infused with new choreography and costumes, celebrating the art form's rich heritage while showcasing the technical prowess and expressive capabilities of the Boston Ballet's dancers. The lavish sets, dazzling costumes, and Alexander Glazunov's sumptuous score will transport audiences to a world of exquisite beauty and dramatic storytelling.

Helen Pickett's world premiere of "SISU" draws inspiration from the Finnish concept of inner strength and resilience. This work is a tribute to the courage and tenacity of the ballet community, particularly highlighted during challenging times. Set to the music of Mikael Karlsson, "SISU" is an exploration of change, bravery, vulnerability, and the ephemeral nature of the art of dance.

"Petal," also choreographed by Helen Pickett, offers a sensory feast of motion, light, and music. Dancers navigate the evolution of relationships through sweeping movements and innovative partnering, all set to the vibrant compositions of Philip Glass and Thomas Montgomery Newman. This colorful and dynamic ballet promises to leave audiences feeling fulfilled and hopeful.

Tamara Rojo reclaimed one of ballet’s timeless classics with this adaptation of RAYMONDA" class="css-u850">RAYMONDA" class="css-u850">Raymonda. Set against the backdrop of the 19th-century Crimean War, Rojo expertly draws on the figure of Florence Nightingale to create a Raymonda who redefines the role of women in wartime and society. Two fifth symphonies from Russia: In 1944, Sergei Prokofiev spent some time in the countryside where he had all the peace and calm he needed in order to compose, while back home in Moscow, people were suffering from hunger and homelessness. What Prokofiev brought to paper is lushly orchestrated, patriotic, and deliberately Russian in its rhythm and melodies. Not to mention a tremendous amount of heroic pathos, in light of the global war against Nazi Germany. In his op. 100, we see the composer as a mature, experienced symphonist, and as grand master of instrumentation. He creates veritable »orchestral paintings« – some lyrical and sumptuous, some dark and warlike.

By the tender age of 23, Jess Gillam has already achieved remarkable milestones, including topping the UK Classical Charts, winning a BRIT Award, and making a sensational debut at the BBC Proms. Now, she's set to demonstrate the captivating capabilities of the saxophone in Glazunov’s 1934 concerto, a piece that, much like Gillam herself, has played a pivotal role in elevating the saxophone's status in the classical music realm.

The evening will commence with Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducting Shostakovich's Suite from Moscow, Cheryomushki, a composition by Glazunov’s student that is filled with humor, waltzes, and fiery dances. This season, works for horn can be enjoyed in the chamber concert of the hr Symphony Orchestra in Friedberg - all about hr solo horn player Marc Gruber in a recently modified program. He will be able to be heard in a duo with Beethoven and Glazunov and, as planned, in a sonorous and soulful trio with Brahms. Instead of the planned horn concerto by Ethel Smyth and the "Music with Horn" by Vagn Holmboe, Grace Kyung Eun Lee will also present three distinctive duos for violin and piano in the first part of the concert.

Valentin Kovalev is a passionate and ebullient classical saxophonist seeking to elevate the voice of saxophone in classical music. He has won the most prestigious international saxophone competitions, including the MTNA Competition (USA), Manhattan International Competition (USA), Classic Winds Competition (Israel), Andorra SaxFest (Andorra), Anches Simples de Toulouse (France), EkaterinburgSaxFest (Russia) and Golden Sax (Ukraine). History can be unkind to composers. It was Alexander Glazunov’s misfortune to be remembered more as the (allegedly) inebriated conductor who ruined the premier of Rachmaninov’s first Symphony, rather than as a supremely gifted composer in his own right. His mentor Rimsky-Korsakov said of the young Glazunov that his ‘development progressed not by the day, but literally by the hour’. He went on to become a highly influential figure in Russian music with an impressive body of innovative and cosmopolitan orchestral works and a gift for glorious melodies.

If you’re not familiar with the music of Glazunov, his concert waltzes are a wonderful place to start. This is the sort of music you can imagine a princess whirling round a packed ballroom to, and Glazunov’s Concert Waltz No.2, which we hear today, blushes with rosy-cheeked colour and romance. Glazunov composed it in 1894, a year after his Fourth Symphony. The 1890s marked the transition for Glazunov from national treasure to international success, and many of his most popular works date from this period. Symphony No.4 is "marvellous, noble and expressive" according to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov who conducted the premiere. And no wonder it was so well received – Glazunov started young when it came to symphonies. He was 16 when he composed his very first, and even at that age, his maturity of expression was staggering.

For twelve years, Lorna, Jenny and Rhian have played together in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The symphonic poem "A Night on Bald Mountain" is the only major orchestral work by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, although it was never performed publicly during his lifetime. The piece describes the dance of the witches on Midsummer Night on Lyssaja gora ("Bald Mountain"), a place in Slavic mythology that, like Blocksberg, is considered a meeting place for witches. Walt Disney, among others, used the music of this work in Leopold Stokowski's adaptation as part of his animated film "Fantasia" in concise scenes.

This season, Musical Interludes explores the work and legacies of three influential music educators: Antonio Salieri, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Nadia Boulanger. In the second concert of the 23/24 season we focus on the work of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, renowned for his richly textured orchestrations and use of Russian folk melodies. Wilmington Symphony’s River Rhapsody concert will feature Schumann’s final symphony, Symphony No. 3, "Rhenish," which drew inspiration from one of Europe’s main rivers, the majestic Rhine River.

In addition, the concert will showcase the exceptional talents of the High School and UNCW Division winners of our 48th annual Richard R. Deas Young Artist Concerto Competition. Emily Bullard, High School Division winner and harpist, will perform Aria in Classic Style, Op. 19 by Marcel Grandjany. UNCW Division winner, Nicholas Strickland, will perform Alex Glazunov’s Concerto in E-flat major, Op. 109 on alto saxophone.

Violinist Jorge Ávila won attention as an outstanding young violinist and has performed as a soloist, recitalist, concertmaster, and chamber musician throughout the world. A recipient of numerous awards and honors, Jorge received his resident status in the United States under the “Extraordinary Talent” category, and was awarded first prize in the Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Competition in 2001.

The American virtuoso Esther Yoo makes her Festival debut in the richly Romantic Violin Concerto by Alexander Glazunov. And guest conductor Ken-David Masur conducts a rarely heard orchestration of Mussorgky's audience favorite, Pictures at an Exhibition, by Sergei Gorchakov. The concert opens with music by Atlanta-native and University of Michigan-alum Carlos Simon.

Ib Andersen’s world premiere will create a whole new look to the orchestral work, initially composed by Stravinsky in 1911 and 1912. Andersen will modernize the composition with transformational choreography that captures the energetic and emotional feel of the music through ballet.

“Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is one of the most challenging scores composed for ballet,” said Ib Andersen. “It’s a score I have lived with for almost 40 years, always thinking about how to deal with the extraordinary energy the music creates. I have decided now is the time to face and embrace this masterpiece for Desert Botanical Garden with new added visual elements.”

In a style reminiscent of Glazunov, Stravinsky’s rhythmic Petrushka is the story of a mischievous puppet who comes to life. With his sidekicks, he transforms the orchestra into a theatrical performance of love and jealousy. The concert opens with Mozart’s tragic Idomeneo, which brings together fate, passion and despair under the baton of guest conductor Nicholas Carter. Violinist Karen Gomyo brings all of Glazunov’s romanticism and brilliance to life.

Stephen Mills brings this treasured fairy tale of perseverance and love to life, with a compiled score from Alexander Glazunov and live accompaniment. Add a dose of humor to the majesty of classical ballet, and Cinderella becomes the perfect way to close Ballet Austin’s 2022/23 Season with four performances on Mother’s Day weekend.

Two piquantly contrasted works by Balanchine are joined by a treasured Robbins classic. Raymonda Variations features dances of “indescribable happiness” and “simple deftness,” as one critic wrote, and includes subtle nods to the choreography of the Marius Petipa story ballet of the title, although it is a plotless work. Agon, one of Balanchine’s supreme collaborations with Stravinsky, was inspired by classic French dance steps, but reimagines and reinterprets them in the spare but powerful style of Balanchine’s historic Black & White leotard ballets. Robbins’ Fancy Free concludes the program on a note of jovial comedy with its depiction of sailors on shore leave looking for love – or just an evening of freewheeling fun.

On May 7, the Dexter Community Orchestra will perform Gustav Holst's "The Planets". This is a monumental work for large orchestra and female chorus. To help us present this wonderful piece, we are offering the community a chance to support the DCO by "adopting a planet". Adoptive planetary parents will be listed in the concert program.

Named Curtis Institute of Music’s string quartet in residence for 2021–22, the Viano Quartet comes to Curtis with an impressive list of accomplishments and experience, including top prizes at the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2019 and a residency at the Colburn School.

A plotless divertissement, the ballet features archetypal characters such as Snow, Frost, the Faun and the Rose. Alexander Glazunov composed the music for The Seasons for Marius Petipa to use in his original 1900 ballet—one of the last productions Petipa choreographed prior to his retirement. This new version features original choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, who has chosen to retain almost all of the original character names, though the monikers are designed to serve more as abstract ideas than literal representations.
