Valentin Kovalev is a passionate and ebullient classical saxophonist seeking to elevate the voice of saxophone in classical music. He has won the most prestigious international saxophone competitions, including the MTNA Competition (USA), Manhattan International Competition (USA), Classic Winds Competition (Israel), Andorra SaxFest (Andorra), Anches Simples de Toulouse (France), EkaterinburgSaxFest (Russia) and Golden Sax (Ukraine).  He is also the recipient of significant awards from Foundation pour la Vocation in France, the Rostropovich Foundation in Russia, and the Musical Fund Society in the United States.

History can be unkind to composers. It was Alexander Glazunov’s misfortune to be remembered more as the (allegedly) inebriated conductor who ruined the premier of Rachmaninov’s first Symphony, rather than as a supremely gifted composer in his own right. His mentor Rimsky-Korsakov said of the young Glazunov that his ‘development progressed not by the day, but literally by the hour’. He went on to become a highly influential figure in Russian music with an impressive body of innovative and cosmopolitan orchestral works and a gift for glorious melodies.

If you’re not familiar with the music of Glazunov, his concert waltzes are a wonderful place to start. This is the sort of music you can imagine a princess whirling round a packed ballroom to, and Glazunov’s Concert Waltz No.2, which we hear today, blushes with rosy-cheeked colour and romance. Glazunov composed it in 1894, a year after his Fourth Symphony. The 1890s marked the transition for Glazunov from national treasure to international success, and many of his most popular works date from this period. Symphony No.4 is "marvellous, noble and expressive" according to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov who conducted the premiere. And no wonder it was so well received – Glazunov started young when it came to symphonies. He was 16 when he composed his very first, and even at that age, his maturity of expression was staggering.

Ib Andersen’s world premiere will create a whole new look to the orchestral work, initially composed by Stravinsky in 1911 and 1912. Andersen will modernize the composition with transformational choreography that captures the energetic and emotional feel of the music through ballet.

“Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is one of the most challenging scores composed for ballet,” said Ib Andersen. “It’s a score I have lived with for almost 40 years, always thinking about how to deal with the extraordinary energy the music creates. I have decided now is the time to face and embrace this masterpiece for Desert Botanical Garden with new added visual elements.”

With his sidekicks, he transforms the orchestra into a theatrical performance of love and jealousy. Stephen Mills brings this treasured fairy tale of perseverance and love to life, with a compiled score from Alexander Glazunov and live accompaniment. Add a dose of humor to the majesty of classical ballet, and Cinderella becomes the perfect way to close Ballet Austin’s 2022/23 Season with four performances on Mother’s Day weekend.

Two piquantly contrasted works by Balanchine are joined by a treasured Robbins classic. Raymonda Variations features dances of “indescribable happiness” and “simple deftness,” as one critic wrote, and includes subtle nods to the choreography of the Marius Petipa story ballet of the title, although it is a plotless work. Agon, one of Balanchine’s supreme collaborations with Stravinsky, was inspired by classic French dance steps, but reimagines and reinterprets them in the spare but powerful style of Balanchine’s historic Black & White leotard ballets. Robbins’ Fancy Free concludes the program on a note of jovial comedy with its depiction of sailors on shore leave looking for love – or just an evening of freewheeling fun.

A plotless divertissement, the ballet features archetypal characters such as Snow, Frost, the Faun and the Rose. Alexander Glazunov composed the music for The Seasons for Marius Petipa to use in his original 1900 ballet—one of the last productions Petipa choreographed prior to his retirement. This new version features original choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, who has chosen to retain almost all of the original character names, though the monikers are designed to serve more as abstract ideas than literal representations.

This eclectic program celebrates both a beloved instrument and classical music’s most rigorous contrapuntal form. Arguably the king of musical innovators, Joseph Haydn took from the past and created the future, as in his Opus 20 Quartet which begins with a cello solo (a historical first) and concludes with a lively fugue that could have come straight from the pen of J.S. Bach. From cellist-composers Luigi Boccherini and Michael Finckel (David Finckel’s cousin) to the Frenchman Alexandre Tansman and the Russian Aleksandr Glazunov, we will hear cellos throughout this concert in delightful combinations, even cello quartets, with exhilarating fugues popping up unexpectedly.

A conductor who is “paving the way” (NBC News) and a “trailblazer” (Minnesota Star Tribune), Roderick Cox returns to the Seattle Symphony. He’s joined onstage by Concertmaster Noah Geller for Glazunov’s Violin Concerto, followed by Bartók’s lurid Miraculous Mandarin.

Maestro Eylar has chosen a highly eclectic and exciting program for our Spring Concert Series, with works by Gershwin, Glazunov, Schoenberg, and Bernstein. Composed in 1932 after a two-week vacation in Cuba, Gershwin’s Cuban Overture (originally titled Rhumba) makes prominent use of Caribbean rhythms and Cuban native percussion, with a wide spectrum of instrumental color. The Overture includes references to Cuban folk melodies and the well-known Spanish song La Paloma. The Overture was a smash success at its premiere in August 1932 and was very favorably reviewed by music critics. Our featured Young Artist Competition Winner Andromeda Kepecs will perform the ultra-romantic and hauntingly beautiful Violin Concerto by Alexander Glazunov, completed in 1904 and dedicated to the Russian violin virtuoso Leopold Auer. Cast in one continuous movement, the work is a tour-de-force of technical virtuosity and soaring melodic invention. We continue with the Finale of Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G Minor, orchestrated by Arnold Schoenberg. This Rondo a la Zingarese is a whirling gypsy-inspired dance movement that illustrates both the melodic genius of Brahms and the deft orchestral technique of Arnold Schoenberg. Our closing work is the monumental Symphony no. 2, subtitled Age of Anxiety, by Leonard Bernstein. A highly unusual work, the Age of Anxiety calls for a piano soloist of the highest caliber, and we are delighted to have former YAC winner Parker Van Ostrand joining the orchestra for this performance. The Symphony is based on W.H. Auden’s poem of the same name and is a programmatic work that deals with the theme of isolation, loneliness, and disquietude, and the journey from that state of being toward faith and hope. This highly charged work, which has great relevance for our times, is sure to move and inspire listeners.

Join us at the Bedford Corn Exchange for an unforgettable evening of classical music with the Philharmonia Orchestra, featuring the extraordinary talents of Santtu-Matias Rouvali as conductor and Jess Gillam on saxophone. This special concert, taking place on Saturday, 30th November 2024 at 7:30 pm, promises a lineup of irresistible tunes and captivating performances.

The evening will commence with Shostakovich's suite from his satirical operetta, "Moscow, Cheryomushki," arranged by Cornall, showcasing humor, lilting waltzes, and fiery dances. Following this, Jess Gillam will take the stage to perform Glazunov's Saxophone Concerto, a piece that has significantly contributed to the saxophone's prominence in classical music. Known for her dynamic performances, Gillam's rendition of this 1934 concerto is eagerly anticipated.

After an interval, the concert will conclude with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, "Pathétique." This passionate symphony, a masterpiece by the composer, remains one of the most beloved works in the classical music repertoire.

Tickets are priced between £15 and £40, with priority booking available for Friends of the Philharmonia. General booking opens at 10 am on Tuesday, 23rd April. This event is suitable for audiences from the age of 7, and the total running time is approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes, including a 20-minute interval.

Tonight, the household name shows us exactly what the saxophone can do, in Glazunov’s 1934 concerto. By the tender age of 23, Jess Gillam has already achieved remarkable milestones, including topping the UK Classical Charts, winning a BRIT Award, and making a sensational debut at the BBC Proms. Now, she's set to demonstrate the captivating capabilities of the saxophone in Glazunov’s 1934 concerto, a piece that, much like Gillam herself, has played a pivotal role in elevating the saxophone's status in the classical music realm.

The evening will commence with Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducting Shostakovich's Suite from Moscow, Cheryomushki, a composition by Glazunov’s student that is filled with humor, waltzes, and fiery dances. The concert will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s emotionally charged Symphony No. 6, 'Pathétique', a piece that showcases the composer's mastery and remains a beloved staple in the classical music canon.

This homage to classical ballet is infused with new choreography and costumes, celebrating the art form's rich heritage while showcasing the technical prowess and expressive capabilities of the Boston Ballet's dancers. The lavish sets, dazzling costumes, and Alexander Glazunov's sumptuous score will transport audiences to a world of exquisite beauty and dramatic storytelling.

Helen Pickett's world premiere of "SISU" draws inspiration from the Finnish concept of inner strength and resilience. This work is a tribute to the courage and tenacity of the ballet community, particularly highlighted during challenging times. Set to the music of Mikael Karlsson, "SISU" is an exploration of change, bravery, vulnerability, and the ephemeral nature of the art of dance.

"Petal," also choreographed by Helen Pickett, offers a sensory feast of motion, light, and music. Dancers navigate the evolution of relationships through sweeping movements and innovative partnering, all set to the vibrant compositions of Philip Glass and Thomas Montgomery Newman. This colorful and dynamic ballet promises to leave audiences feeling fulfilled and hopeful.
