Bassist

Beethoven and Banjos, an annual project organized by the Northwoods Music Collaborative, is more than a simple presentation of the respective styles of classical and traditional music. The program integrates music and musicians from around the world to create new music and new interpretations of old music. Their past performances at NMU have been very well-received, and this year Beethoven and Banjos will be featuring Icelandic music with musicians Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir and Halldór Smárason. Evan Premo performs with Saeunn through his work with Decoda (an affiliate ensemble of Carnegie Hall). Saeunn and Halldór, along with Evan Premo and Laurel Premo will present classical and folk music from Iceland.

Before leading a master class with Shepherd School students, Ruckus will perform for approximately 15 minutes.

Alice Pratt Brown Hall

Flutist and program curator Catherine Gregory, percussionist Ian Rosenbaum, and soprano Ariadne Greif, explore the relationship of sound, breath, and life through a collection of newly written miniatures by a diverse array of composers. The human voice and percussion join the flute to fashion a trio of the world’s oldest instruments in this theatrically conceived program, Just Breath(e).

Works by Timo Andres, Clarice Assad, Kinan Azmeh, Juhi Bansal, Viet Cuong, Ellis Ludwig-Leone, Diane Monroe and Matthew Evan Taylor are intertwined with specially arranged works by Raven Chacon, Chris Cerrone, and Kevin Puts that play on the same theme.

Moab Wilderness

The Music Makers Summer Session, the inaugural month-long concert series at the WYSO Center for Music, kicks off with an hour-long performance by the Tuuli Quartet, an Upper Peninsula-formed string ensemble that performs regularly across the Midwest, at 6:30pm. The group includes musicians and music educators Lauren Pulcipher (violin), Danielle Simandl (violin), Kelly Quesada (cello), and WYSO Music Maker Director Ria Hodgson (viola).
