The Santa Fe Opera

A brand new production of La traviata opens the Festival and will be directed by Maxine Braham and designed by Jamie Vartan, who makes his Festival debut, with lighting design by Johanna Town. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is conducted by renowned exponent of Verdi (including Falstaff at the Met, and Simon Boccanegra and Il trovatore at the Royal Opera) Richard Farnes – another Festival debut. The cast includes Samantha Clarke as Violetta – a role she was recently critically acclaimed for with Opera Australia, Nico Darmanin as Alfredo and a Festival debut from Dario Solari as Giorgio Germont.

The love between a father and daughter, a lustful Duke, revenge and a curse. The court jester Rigoletto loves his daughter Gilda above all else. When the Duke of Mantua and his courtiers play a cruel trick on them, Rigoletto plots murderous revenge. But Gilda’s love and devotion lead to devastating consequences.

Sir Bryn Terfel is Pushkin’s Romantic hero, a tormented victim of passion with a knife at the ready for any wrong-doing.

He has turned his back on the ordinary world to be with Zemfira who breaks him. The blood-drenched show-down presents a side of Bryn that is rarely – if ever – seen.

n marked contrast, Bryn is Puccini’s comic trickster Gianni Schicchi
(pronounced Junny Skikki), called in by the wealthy Donatis to solve a family problem.

He refuses – until his daughter sings Puccini’s most famous aria O mio babbino caro.

This comic masterpiece (Puccini’s only comedy and written towards the end of his life) is built on every family’s nightmare: the reading of a will that goes disastrously wrong.
