The Academy of St Martin in the Fields present a stunning and varied programme of works by female composers, including a World Premiere from Eleanor Alberga, her Symphony No. 2 written for ASMF. The concert’s finale is with violinist Elena Urioste, who with ‘her airy, silvery tone and fine filigree detail’ (The Arts Desk) will perform Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 1. The concerto in D Major, which despite its reference to Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in the violin’s solo entrance and references throughout, is distinctly Price’s own style and launches into new musical ideas with the last movement ending the evening on a flourish.

The Ivalas Quartet, currently the Graduate Resident String Quartet at Juilliard, is renowned for their charismatic performances and dedication to showcasing BIPOC composers. Their program for this concert is a celestial exploration of musical compositions, featuring Osvaldo Golijov's "Tenebrae," inspired by a planetarium visit; Eleanor Alberga's "String Quartet No. 1," a piece that delves into the mysteries of the cosmos; and Ludwig van Beethoven's "String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 130," a profound expression of beauty and emotion.

The quartet, composed of Reuben Kebede and Tiani Butts on violin, Marcus Stevenson on viola, and Pedro Sanchez on cello, has been praised for their "tremendous heart and beauty" by The Strad. Since their formation at the University of Michigan in 2017, they have been changing the face of classical music, performing at prestigious venues and winning numerous competitions.

This concert will last approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes, including an intermission, allowing audiences to fully immerse themselves in the talent and passion of the Ivalas Quartet. Join us for an unforgettable musical experience as the Ivalas Quartet graces the stage at Caramoor on February 25, 2024, at 2:00 pm. This remarkable ensemble, serving as the 2022-23 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, will present their final concert in this residency, a performance that was eagerly anticipated and has been postponed from June 2023. The concert will take place in the intimate setting of the Chamber Music Room, offering a perfect acoustic environment to appreciate the quartet's artistry.

The Ivalas Quartet is renowned for their commitment to showcasing diverse voices in classical music, and this concert is no exception. Their program features works by Black and indigenous composers, including a world premiere by the exceptionally talented Derrick Skye, whose compositions reflect his Ghanaian, Nigerian, Native American, and British/Irish heritage. Skye's new work, "Deliverance," promises to be a transcultural exploration blending Persian classical melodic systems with rhythmic elements from West and North African music, offering a unique and enriching musical experience.

The quartet, composed of Reuben Kebede and Tiani Butts on violins, Marcus Stevenson on viola, and Pedro Sánchez on cello, will also perform pieces by Jessie Montgomery, Carlos Simon, and Eleanor Alberga, creating a program that celebrates the richness and diversity of classical music. Each piece has been carefully selected to align with the Ivalas Quartet's mission to disrupt and enhance the classical music world by amplifying voices less known and sometimes unheard.

This concert is not just a performance but a statement of the Ivalas Quartet's dedication to representation, diversity, and the power of music to unite and inspire. **About the Concert:**  
At the heart of this programme is Samuel Barber’s masterpiece, *Knoxville: Summer of 1915*, a poignant setting of a prose poem by James Agee. Composed shortly after World War II, Barber’s work presents a child’s view of life and loss in rural America, juxtaposing the beauty of a safe and loving world with the underlying tragedy of its potential loss.

Inspiring PSC favorite returns with pianist Shai Wosner for the world premiere of composer/ jazz pianist Vijay Iyer’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, written for Shai Wosner and East Coast Chamber Orchestra, and co-commissioned by Peoples’ Symphony Concerts through a grant from the Roger Shapiro Fund and with support from Richard Replin and Elissa Stein,  Michael Hindus and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.

Our 49th Season opens as a journey through art as expression, with works from literature and painting as the composers’ inspirational backdrop. Our gifted guest vocalist, bass-baritone Christopher Humbert Jr.,  will be on hand for two selections with literary origins. Living composer Eleanor Alberga’s romantic work for baritone and string orchestra, The Soul’s Expression (2017), is set to texts from three very different 19th century writers: George Eliot, Emily Brontë, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. And Maurice Ravel’s song cycle (his last composition) is based on the story of Cervantes’ epic novel Don Quixote. The concert opens with the familiar overture to Verdi’s opera “The Power of Destiny,” based on a Spanish drama, and closes with Modest Mussorgsky’s powerful masterpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition.

Gnarly blues and blistering cross-rhythms launch the 2023-24 season at full-speed with Filter for solo violin by the genre-bending Haitian-American composer Daniel Bernard Roumain. The luxuriant Shining Gate of Morpheus for horn and strings by Eleanor Alberga, a British composer of Jamaican descent, compliments a world premiere for flute, oboe, and clarinet by longtime Radius collaborator and Boston local Curtis Hughes. Igor Stravinsky’s own trio arrangement of L’Histoire du Soldat, a neo-classical Parable, brings the concert to a close. L’Histoire du Soldat is the Faustian tale of a soldier who makes a fateful trade with the Devil: his violin for a book that can predict the future.

The program features Edvard Grieg’s heartrending Holberg Suite “in the olden style”; Jamaican composer Eleanor Alberga’s tender elegy for her mother; and Franz Schubert’s searing, intense “Death and the Maiden” Quartet, heard here in Gustav Mahler’s unforgettable arrangement for string orchestra.

Individual lives tell the stories for this programme. Jamaican-born British composer Eleanor Alberga is inspired by the memory of a dear friend, a “tower of strength”, with music that brings a character to life. Meanwhile, Vaughan Williams tells the tale of a vagabond on his travels who demands “give to me the life I love”. Tippett’s oratorio relates the tragedy of an individual’s desperate act, and over 80 years after its premiere, still resonates with its themes of oppression and disenfranchisement. His use of African-American spirituals to evoke, as he put it, those “cast out from the centre of our society onto the fringes” is as pertinent now as it was then.

A Child of Our Time

Doreen Carwithen’s swashbuckling overture was written for a 1954 British adventure film. Anna Clyne tells the story of a seamstress, lost in her thoughts, imagining a series of five fantastical tales. The evening ends with Eleanor Alberga’s ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, adapted from Roald Dahl’s subversive retelling of the Brothers Grimm story.

Daring, sultry, and playfully evocative, flutist and composer Valerie Coleman’s musical memoir, Portraits of Josephine, captures the irreverent spirit and joie de vivre of one of the 20th century’s most charismatic entertainers, Josephine Baker. Ensemble 20/21 presents this electrifying suite for wind quintet, featuring three significant moments throughout Baker’s life. From her humble beginnings in St. Louis to creating a multiracial utopia within the majestic walls of her 15th-century château, Les Milandes, and causing a splash on the 1920s Parisian club scene, this captivating portrait chronicles her triumphant rise to international stardom.

Summer Broadcast Series: Music of Change

Whenever Isata Kanneh-Mason comes together with players of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, they click – one critic described the result as “music-making between friends”. Expect the same magic as she joins them in the beautiful surroundings of St George’s Hall Concert Room for music by Mendelssohn and the Jamaican-born, British-based composer, Eleanor Alberga.

With unparalleled artistry and enduring vigor, the Juilliard String Quartet—celebrating its 75th Anniversary this season—​continues to inspire audiences around the world. Founded in 1946 and hailed by the Boston Globe as “the most important American quartet in history,” the ensemble draws on a deep and vital engagement to the classics, while embracing the mission of championing new works. Each performance of the Juilliard String Quartet is a unique experience, bringing together the four members’ profound understanding, total commit­ment and unceasing curiosity in sharing the wonders of the string quartet literature. Ronald Copes, former faculty member in UCSB’s Department of Music, has played with the Juilliard String Quartet since 1997. In May 2022, the Quartet named violist Molly Carr to its ensemble, filling the void left by the passing of Carr’s mentor and friend, much-loved violist Roger Tapping.

Now enjoying their 20th year together, this tight-knit ensemble is firmly established as an important voice in the world of chamber music.

Young British pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason’s recording debut of the works of Clara Schumann had an auspicious launch at No. 1 on the U.K. Classical Charts in 2019. Gramophone proclaimed it “one of the most charming and engaging debuts.” She has seven musical siblings—including cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason—who are fast becoming Britain’s first family of classical music.

RNCM hosts the official Northern launch show for Meraki Duo’s debut album, Notes from the Living Room, following its worldwide release on Delphian Records (Fri 11 Sep 2026). (London launch: Mon 7 Sep 2026 at Ronnie Scott’s). Hear the internationally sought-after, prize-winning duo of British flautist of Trinidadian heritage Meera Maharaj (Chineke! Orchestra, Meliora Collective) and Oslo-based British guitarist James Girling (Agbeko, The Easy Rollers) perform their record in full. Autumn 2026 marks 13 years since the duo formed as first-year undergraduate students at the RNCM, making this an especially meaningful homecoming for Meraki Duo.
