Watch out, there's something to discover here! The 3rd Loh concert features two opera specialists and a film composer with spectacular instrumental works. Like so many before him, Antonio Salieri, who has chosen to live in Vienna, wrote variations on the popular "Follia" bass. He took the original meaning of "Follia", "madness", very seriously and created extravagant miniatures with highlights for violin, harp, percussion and wind instruments. The fact that his compatriot, the Oscar-winning film music composer Nino Rota, was also at home in classical genres is demonstrated by his bassoon concerto, which is also crowned by a series of variations. The concert concludes with Weber's 1st Symphony, a work full of energy and dynamism that already gives an idea of ​​the later creator of "Freischütz".

Following the acclaimed performances of Gustav Mahler's Sixth Symphony, Nicola Luisotti returns to the podium of the Staatsorchester Stuttgart, with whom he has worked closely since his debut in 2001. In the Fantasy Overture Romeo and Juliet at the beginning of the concert, Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky brings together the contrasting worlds of Shakespeare's tragedy with shimmering romantic colours: the hatred of the hostile Capuleti and Montecchi families and the infinite longing of the young lovers. Deeply rooted in the language of romanticism is the Italian Nino Rota, who became known above all for his film music, such as that for Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather.

This sigh, attributed to the young Franz Schubert, expresses - on behalf of so many other composers up to the end of the 19th century - the difficulty of creating any more symphonies after Beethoven's symphonies, which were considered so perfect. In a world where film and music are inseparably linked, Music@Menlo will focus its lens on the relationship between composers and “the seventh art.” Music has always played a paramount role in the movie theater, supporting the rich emotional connection between the audience and the silver screen, and many composers have been deeply influenced by cinema’s traditions, tropes, and heritage. This Focus Residency will explore the why and how behind several such composers’ works as our camera moves through all the angles: music written for cinema, because of it, mimicking it, and even establishing the cinematic sound. Join us for a fascinating look into the life and works of several composers, featuring Dmitry Shostakovich and his relationship to Soviet cinema; the chamber music of Nino Rota, the man behind The Godfather; Patrick Castillo, a name so dear to Music@Menlo, and his fascination with Ingmar Bergman; the vibrant world of Libby Larsen and her dive into the smoky atmosphere of film noir; and, of course, the “Father of Soundtrack,“ the “Haydn of Film Music“ himself: Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

As every year, the North German Philharmonic Orchestra Rostock starts the season with three concerts as part of the MV Festival, which take place in cooperation with the summer campus of the hmt Rostock. Hildur Guŏnadóttir's experimental yet warm From the Other Place, played from a color map rather than a traditional score, provides room for the strings to organically make music together for a one-of-a-kind performance. The Graber-Graham-Rose Trio or G-G-R Trio, was formed in 2013 and made its debut performance at Trinity Chamber Concerts in Berkeley. Since then, the group has performed at Old First Church and NoonTime Concert in San Francisco, Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, Four Seasons Arts Cameo Concerts, and other venues. Because works of major composers for this instrumentation are limited, G-G-R Trio also explores arrangements and works by lesser known composers, including Mikhail Glinka, Marko Tajevi, Paul Juon and Gunter Raphael.

Unfortunately, there is no symphony by the opera composer Giuseppe Verdi. However, the Italian did compose a melodious string quartet, which the American double bassist and university professor Lucas Drew arranged for string orchestra and entitled "Symphony." It promises a special listening experience.

Love tangles, deception, double standards: Rossini ignites a fast-paced firework display in the lively overture to his opera La scala di seta. Hardly anyone could deliver this with more spirit than a stylistically assured conductor like Antonino Fogliani. Things get exciting in Bruno Maderna's Giardino religioso. There are no fixed sequences here; musicians and conductor decide in real time where the journey will take them. It sounds chaotic, but it's cleverly executed! The result is a truly special concert moment. No less thrilling is Nino Rota's Bassoon Concerto, played by Sophie Dervaux, the principal bassoonist of the Vienna Philharmonic. Rota was much more than "just" a film music genius. In addition to ten operas, he composed numerous other works – and this charming, joyful concerto. Haydn's Symphony "Mit dem Paukenschlag", which sparkles with wit and inventiveness, is another highlight of a program that promises to be as unusual as it is entertaining.

Janine Jansen has no problem playing popular works like Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" again and again, because, as she says, "ultimately, every interpretation is unique." The CAMERATA audience can also expect such unique performances when the orchestra's artistic partner embarks on an adventurous and atmospheric journey through the Italian seasons of the early 18th century, still unclouded by climate change. The music magazine Stereoplay praised Janine Jansen's performance of "The Seasons" as "a completely natural, breathing flow." Janine Jansen also brings two other great Italian Baroque violinists into play, bundled together in one work: Vivaldi's contemporary Geminiani reworked a violin sonata by Corelli on the voluptuous Portuguese dance "folía" into a brilliant concerto grosso. Jansen and the CAMERATA will demonstrate how productive this concert form still is in our time in a string concerto by film music king Nino Rota from 2007 and a charming concerto combination for string quartet, string orchestra and harpsichord by Richard Dubugnon from 2020.

Just like the epic saying "When in Rome," you can expect an epic concert led by Marcelo Lehninger to make the audience feel like they are in Rome. Featuring the must-hear Italian composer Ottorino Resphigi's Pini di Roma or known as the Pines of Rome.

When in Rome

Nino Rota had every reason to be happy in 1973 – at least for a short time: his music for Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Godfather was initially nominated for an Oscar, but was suddenly removed from the list. During this time, the Italian composer wrote his clarinet trio, which shows him from both a romantic, yearning and humorous side. Rota did win the Oscar two years later. The melodic arcs in the Phantasy Quintet by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams are shrouded in mist. These elegiac sounds blend 16th and 17th century idioms with moments of English folk song. Just as Vaughan Williams transformed his most successful film music for Scott of the Antarctic into his seventh symphony, Erich Wolfgang Korngold incorporated music from many films into his concert music. The sonorous passion so typical of his style also pervades his large-scale Piano Quintet in E major op. 15, where exuberant intensity and eruptions of sound alternate with the most delicate lyricism and airy sentiment in the smallest of spaces.

7. Chamber Music Concert

In Nino Rota's "Nonetto," his characteristically sensitive melodic structure and Mediterranean flair combine to create one of the most elegant chamber music works of the entire 20th century. Rota's first version of this piece was created in 1959 – the same year as Bohuslav Martinu°'s Nonet No. 2. Martinu° completed it shortly before his death. His biographer, Harry Halbreich, called it "Martinu°'s chamber music legacy," which, despite its apparent modesty, surpasses almost all of the composer's other works. Here, he said, is a piece of eternal beauty. "As with Mozart's late work," Halbreich summarized, "in this work, the deepest feeling and the wisdom of a lifetime are concealed behind the facade of graceful divertissements and smiling purity of expression."

Rome is where Corelli developed the concerto grosso, where Respighi was inspired while celebrating its beauty, and where Nino Rota composed countless film scores. For Handel, Rome played a decisive role during his early career, even though his opera about the most famous Roman emperor was composed in London. This tribute to the Eternal City will mark the debut of contralto Rose Naggar-Tremblay and young conductor Kyrian Friedenberg with Les Violons du Roy.
