"Who can do anything after Beethoven?" This sigh, attributed to the young Franz Schubert, expresses - on behalf of so many other composers up to the end of the 19th century - the difficulty of creating any more symphonies after Beethoven's symphonies, which were considered so perfect. Schubert himself left behind a whole series of symphonic fragments in his search for his own path, including perhaps the most beautiful torso of Romanticism with "the Unfinished". Only two movements, but they traverse an entire emotional cosmos.

Philip Kleutgens, a Master of Music student under the tutelage of Taimur Sullivan, will be performing a captivating recital on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 8:30pm CDT. Philip will be joined by a talented ensemble of musicians, including Isaac Boone on soprano saxophone, Yun Qu Tan on alto saxophone, Brian Kachur on tenor saxophone, Natalia Warthen on baritone saxophone, and Nathan Canfield on piano. The program promises a diverse range of pieces, featuring works by Sam Alvarez, John Anthony Lennon, and Paul Creston, as well as transcriptions by Philip Kleutgens himself, including selections from Nino Rota's Concerto for Strings and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Souvenir d’un lieu cher.

In a world where film and music are inseparably linked, Music@Menlo will focus its lens on the relationship between composers and “the seventh art.” Music has always played a paramount role in the movie theater, supporting the rich emotional connection between the audience and the silver screen, and many composers have been deeply influenced by cinema’s traditions, tropes, and heritage. This Focus Residency will explore the why and how behind several such composers’ works as our camera moves through all the angles: music written for cinema, because of it, mimicking it, and even establishing the cinematic sound. Join us for a fascinating look into the life and works of several composers, featuring Dmitry Shostakovich and his relationship to Soviet cinema; the chamber music of Nino Rota, the man behind The Godfather; Patrick Castillo, a name so dear to Music@Menlo, and his fascination with Ingmar Bergman; the vibrant world of Libby Larsen and her dive into the smoky atmosphere of film noir; and, of course, the “Father of Soundtrack,“ the “Haydn of Film Music“ himself: Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

As every year, the North German Philharmonic Orchestra Rostock starts the season with three concerts as part of the MV Festival, which take place in cooperation with the summer campus of the hmt Rostock. This year's concerts in the Holy Spirit Church in Wismar, in the Bützow Collegiate Church and in the Katharinensaal of the hmt Rostock will not only feature the results of the master classes, but also well-known musicians such as the pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimar, the violinist Henja Semmler, the cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and the trombonist Jamie Williams, who act as lecturers during the summer campus. The varied program of the three evenings under the direction of chief conductor Marcus Bosch presents music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Camille Saint-Saëns and Nino Rota.

With a nostalgic, golden-age voice that routinely inspires comparisons to “legendary singers from earlier eras” (Associated Press), Maltese-born Joseph Calleja has become one of the most acclaimed tenors today, and he will make his BroadStage return as part of the 2023/24 Celebrity Opera Recital Series. Calleja’s extensive discography and appearances on the world’s leading opera, concert, and television stages have marked him as one of the most sought-after tenors of today. Recent operatic seasons have included appearances at notable opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Royal Opera House in London. Discovery Open Rehearsal  - Francesco pairs the Ballet Suite from La Strada (The Road), by influential black-and-white film score composer Nino Rota with Sergei Rachmaninoff's brilliant Symphony No. 1. Hildur Guŏnadóttir's experimental yet warm From the Other Place, played from a color map rather than a traditional score, provides room for the strings to organically make music together for a one-of-a-kind performance.  RACH & the Hollywood Sound is a four-year exploration in which Rachmaninoff's monumental orchestral works are brought together with works by influential Hollywood composers of the past and present, illustrating their shared lush, lyrical and highly praised Hollywood sound.

The Graber-Graham-Rose Trio or G-G-R Trio, was formed in 2013 and made its debut performance at Trinity Chamber Concerts in Berkeley. Since then, the group has performed at Old First Church and NoonTime Concert in San Francisco, Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, Four Seasons Arts Cameo Concerts, and other venues. Because works of major composers for this instrumentation are limited, G-G-R Trio also explores arrangements and works by lesser known composers, including Mikhail Glinka, Marko Tajevi, Paul Juon and Gunter Raphael.

Following the acclaimed performances of Gustav Mahler's Sixth Symphony, Nicola Luisotti returns to the podium of the Staatsorchester Stuttgart, with whom he has worked closely since his debut in 2001. In the Fantasy Overture Romeo and Juliet at the beginning of the concert, Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky brings together the contrasting worlds of Shakespeare's tragedy with shimmering romantic colours: the hatred of the hostile Capuleti and Montecchi families and the infinite longing of the young lovers. Deeply rooted in the language of romanticism is the Italian Nino Rota, who became known above all for his film music, such as that for Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather.

Watch out, there's something to discover here! The 3rd Loh concert features two opera specialists and a film composer with spectacular instrumental works. Like so many before him, Antonio Salieri, who has chosen to live in Vienna, wrote variations on the popular "Follia" bass. He took the original meaning of "Follia", "madness", very seriously and created extravagant miniatures with highlights for violin, harp, percussion and wind instruments. The fact that his compatriot, the Oscar-winning film music composer Nino Rota, was also at home in classical genres is demonstrated by his bassoon concerto, which is also crowned by a series of variations. The concert concludes with Weber's 1st Symphony, a work full of energy and dynamism that already gives an idea of ​​the later creator of "Freischütz".
