“I grew up performing in floor shows in Black neighborhoods in a segregated Kansas City in the 1950s & 60s. My mother was a dancer and a jazz singer, and my father sold real estate and ran a bar called Al and Bud’s. During this era, Black businesses were booming, and there was great hope for upward mobility after World War II.

Celebrating what would have been composer/keyboardist Sun Ra's 110th birthday on May 22, Grammy-winning, Earth-born, New Orleans pianist/keyboardist Sullivan Fortner has summoned his most galactic-minded of friends to delve into Sun Ra's inventive and adventurous music. From swing to free to earthy and spacey, Fortner and his fellow explorers – including Sun Ra Arkestra veterans and Grammy-winners –  will embrace the eclecticism that marked Sun Ra's atmospheric musical forays.

Join us at Harlem Stage for an unforgettable evening with Craig Harris as he presents "TONGUES OF FIRE in a harlem state of mind." This concert, scheduled for Saturday, October 21, 2023, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, promises a fusion of music, poetry, and movement that explores the evolution of the Harlem community from the mid-seventies to the present day.

Craig Harris, a renowned trombonist, composer, and sonic shaman, has assembled an all-star intergenerational cast for this performance. The lineup includes Harlem-based artists across three generations, such as Henry Jeria, Calvin Jones, Damon DueWhite, Carla Cook, Sam McKelton, Du’Bois A’Keen, Milton Suggs, Sista Zock, Ngoma Hill, Kayden Hern, Anubis, and Naomi Extra. This event not only showcases Harris's journey and contributions to creative music but also highlights his commitment to using his musical voice to address social injustice and humanity.

The concert will take place at Harlem Stage, located at 150 Convent Avenue, New York, United States. Reserved seating is available, ensuring an intimate experience for all attendees. Following the performance, join us for a special After Performance Talk Back session where Carl Hancock Rux interviews Craig Harris. They will discuss the groundbreaking first Tongues of Fire concert at Harlem Stage, featuring luminaries such as Ntozake Shange, Amiri Baraka, and many others, and delve into the reconceptualization of this concert with a new set of music and poetry luminaries thirty years later.
