The Shepherd School celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with a Spanish-language recital performed by faculty member and international opera star Ana María Martínez, six opera department students, and surprise guests. The performance includes projected images inspired by the musical works and on-screen translations.

GRAMMY-winning soprano Jessica Rivera, who appears as Donna Elvira in Cincinnati Opera’s season-opening production of Don Giovanni, returns to perform “Canciones de Mi Alma Latina: Songs of My Latin Soul,” an exploration of her musical career through the lens of her Peruvian-American heritage. Rivera will perform music by Osvaldo Golijov, Fernando Obradors, Manuel de Falla, Antonio de Salazar, and Federico Moreno Torroba, as well as operatic favorites by Puccini and Mozart. Joining Rivera is her longtime collaborator Mark Carver on piano.

This exclusive event, part of the Segovia Classical Guitar Series, showcases Russell's exceptional musicianship and technical prowess, which have earned him international acclaim, including a Grammy Award and induction into the Guitar Foundation of America's Hall of Fame.

David Russell's performance will include a diverse repertoire, featuring works by José Brocá, Benedetto Marcello, Federico Moreno Torroba, J.S. Bach, Francis Kleynjans, and Francisco Tárrega. Named after the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid, the early form of Spanish musical theatre emerged as early as the 17th century, parallel to Italian opera. Related to vaudeville, farce and operetta, hundreds of these entertaining and effective works were written within a few decades. The genre was increasingly forgotten and only experienced a revival in the mid-19th century. However, it is still neglected on theatre programmes today. Star director Christof Loy, who has been a strong advocate of the zarzuela for many years, is staging an evening at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
