This chamber music concert is a celebration of musical textures featuring the number three. It was inspired by Thomas Adès’ Sonata with its unusual instrumentation of oboe, horn, and harpsichord that combines a contemporary style with French Baroque flair. Adès wrote this work as an homage to Claude Debussy, thus providing the perfect link to Debussy’s exuberant and extremely popular Sonata. In between the two works, Franco Donatoni’s Small II lends a striking contrast. After an intense first half, the second half of the concert features more “classical” trios, so to speak, that are connected through the use of the piano. Unusually, however, these were written by the rarely performed composers Charles Koechlin, August Klughardt, and Eugène Goossens. These works are distinguished by profound, lavish, and distinct melodies that allow each instrument to showcase its vocal qualities.

Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen found inspiration in Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale for his own Catch and Release. Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 1 is a master class in skill and beauty, over 15 years in the making.

To parallel our celebrations of Symphony Hall’s 125th anniversary, frequent guest pianist Randall Hodgkinson joins the Chamber Players for a program featuring composers active at the time of the hall’s opening in 1900. Amy Beach and Charles Martin Loeffler were both prominent in Boston’s musical community at the turn of the last century. Charles Koechlin and Camille Saint-Saëns represent two generations of Parisian music, while Mahler (and his younger colleague Schoenberg) were both active in Vienna.

Horn Trios

Classical music is rarely experienced in such a relaxed, informal setting. The lunch concerts of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra make it possible: On a flying visit to Hamburg? A bit of time during your lunch break? Looking for an idea for a group outing? Every one or two months, you can simply drop by the Brahms Foyer of the Laeiszhalle on a Tuesday afternoon. You don't even need a ticket for these chamber music delicacies. Entry is free, but places are limited (and the seats even more limited!). There is just a donation box at the exit - for anyone who enjoyed it.

Louise Farrenc was the first woman to receive a piano professorship at the renowned Paris Conservatory. Born in 1804 into a family of artists belonging to the Parisian Bohème, she was supported in her musical career from a young age. Her popularity as a composer was rather unusual in the male-dominated musical world of the 19th century. Her music was performed, published and discussed in reviews. Encouraged by the premiere of her Nonet, in which the star violinist Joseph Joachim was performing, she insisted upon receiving the same salary from the conservatory as her male colleagues - with success. Clara Schumann was only 15 years younger than Farrenc and her Trio op. 17 from 1846 is her greatest work of chamber music. As her husband Robert had not yet composed a classical trio at the time, she was able to express herself freely in this area without being exposed to the often inhibiting comparison with her husband. Her trio captivates with expressive themes and a touching melancholy. The concert opens with the yearning sounds of the trio composed by Charles Koechlin around 1900, who was a fellow student of Maurice Ravel at the famous Paris Conservatory.

Hector Berlioz poured all his unrequited longing into a symphony like nothing you’ve ever heard – an outrageous opium-fuelled fantasy of glittering ballrooms, guillotines and demonic revels. Making her Liverpool conducting debut is Ariane Matiakh, who takes us to the stars with a sultry French nightscape by Charles Koechlin, before the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir continue our journey to the heavens in Poulenc’s exuberant Gloria.

Ivy Ringel is principal bassoon of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and adjunct lecturer in bassoon at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Prior to her time in Indianapolis, Ringel served as principal bassoon of the Atlanta Opera and the Des Moines Metro Opera. She has performed as guest principal bassoon with the Atlanta Symphony and performs regularly with such orchestras as the Houston Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Louisiana Philharmonic, and the Jacksonville Symphony. Ringel has held teaching positions at Butler University and Morehouse College and earned degrees from Rice University and the Eastman School of Music. Her primary bassoon teachers include Benjamin Kamins, Michael Burns, John Hunt, and Charlie Bailey. When she is not playing the bassoon or making reeds, Ringel enjoys cooking, baking bread, traveling, live music, and hiking.

Highlighting the evening is Koechlin's "Les Bandar-Log, op. 176," a piece inspired by the anarchic troop of monkeys from The Jungle Book, promising a wild potpourri of sounds and stylistic devices.

Sir Simon Rattle's affinity for French music, recognized by his award of the Order of Knight of the French Legion of Honor in 2010, guarantees a performance that explores the fascinating sound world of these composers, showcasing the orchestra's distinctive virtuosity and the rich colors of the music.

Sierra Ensemble is an innovative violin, French horn, and piano trio based in Richmond, California. Performing worldwide and throughout the United States since 1998, Sierra has built audience and expanded repertoire through numerous composer commissions and education projects. Sierra has been awarded grants from both CEC ArtsLink and U.S. Department of State. These grants funded two groundbreaking residency programs at universities in Turkey in May and June 2013. Deeply committed to music education and development of young artists, Sierra served as Ensemble in Residence for the John Adams Young Composers Program, at the Crowden Music Center in Berkeley in 2012. Recent local performances include appearances in Berkeley at the East Bay Music Collective in January, and a free livestream concert at the Center for New Music, San Francisco in July, In addition, the American Federation of Musicians, San Francisco Local, via the Music Performance Trust Funds, sponsored Sierra Ensemble in a free livestream concert to East Bay schools in April 2021. Sierra Ensemble is currently recording the Brahms Horn Trio. Their performance, noted for “… glowing dexterity … a first-class blend of sensitive Brahms…,” is set be released in early 2022.

Richard Aldag’s Trio For Violin, French horn and Piano was commissioned by Sierra Ensemble with the support of the Musical Grant Program, which is administered by InterMusic SF, and supported by the Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, and San Francisco Grants for the Arts.

François Mardirossian brings to light the gems of the brilliant American outsider Louis Thomas Hardin, aka Moondog; and Jodyline Gallavardin celebrates the dazzling works of the poet Anna de Noailles, interweaving readings and rare works by her contemporaries (Déodat de Séverac, Lili Boulanger, Gabriel Dupont…).
