This special evening marks nearly 30 years since Sir Antonio Pappano's first encounter with the LSO, revisiting the opera that captures the longing for love against a backdrop of family disapproval. The performance promises a rhapsodic and romantic journey, light on its feet yet rich with emotion, concluding at approximately 9:05 pm after a 20-minute interval. A repeat performance will be held on 12 December.

Most music lovers are familiar with the “Great B’s,” Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, but this is not the only alliterative group of brilliant composers. In our December concert, we invite listeners to celebrate the “Great P’s.” Highlights include three selections from operas by the master of drama, Giacomo Puccini, and a violin concerto by the master of orchestration, Sergei Prokofiev, featuring rising-star violin soloist Beau Henson. The concert opens with music by film score composer Rachel Portman, and includes the moving Agnus Dei from the Polish Requiem by the brilliant composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

A garret in Paris on a cold winter’s day around Christmas. Rodolfo, a writer, and Marcello, a painter, are working on their masterpieces. They have no money to buy food, pay the rent or fuel the stove. Colline, a philosopher, returns from the pawn shop empty handed, having failed to get rid of some books. Only Schaunard, a musician, has managed to come up with some victuals, kindling, cigars and cash, so off they go to Café Momus - without Rodolfo, who’s trying to work. Mimì, the embroiderer from next door, arrives to ask for a match to light her candle with. She collapses and loses her key; cue for Rodolfo to fall in love with Mimì, who is terminally ill with TB, although he dumps her two months later because the prospect of her ailment getting steadily worse in her freezing home is too much for him. Six months go by. Musetta, Marcello’s ex, arrives with Mimì, whose condition is grave. Musetta sells some earrings with a view to buying medicine; Colline gives up his coat. Gratitude and happiness for a short while. Rodolfo thinks Mimì is sleeping and her body regenerating, …but in fact she’s dead.

“How ice-cold is this little hand” – a hand held by the poet Rodolfo in the darkness of his artists’ commune! The ice-cold hand belongs to the seamstress Mimì – with whom he proceeds to throw himself into the Christmas season in Paris. Only a few months later, though, she finds living with Rodolfo torturous. It is not jealousy, however, which explains Rodolfo’s behaviour: he knows that Mimì will not last the year. "La Bohème" was based on Henri Murger’s extremely successful novel "Les scènes de la vie de bohème", which had entranced Puccini when he first read it. His wish to set the tale to music was so strong that he even risked ruining his friendship with Ruggero Leoncavallo, who was also working on a opera version of it. Today, the opera premiered in 1896 is considered one of the most popular stage works of all times – thanks to an overabundance of melodies and Puccini’s genius for character portraits.

Tosca is a political thriller, set in Rome in June 1800 (during the Napoleonic wars and a time of great political unrest). The action takes place over less than 24 hours, making it an intense experience! The plot centres around three main characters – Rome’s diva Floria Tosca, her lover Mario Cavaradossi (a painter and republican) and the corrupt Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia. Scarpia has long lusted after Tosca, and when he suspects Cavaradossi of assisting an escaped political prisoner, seizes the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. He will manipulate Tosca into revealing the prisoner’s hiding place and Cavaradossi’s involvement, and have her for himself. When Cavaradossi is captured, Scarpia offers Tosca a horrific bargain – she must give herself to Scarpia, or her lover is killed… what will she choose, and who will survive?

Tenor Jonathan Tetelman is the callous Pinkerton, with Hyona Kim as Suzuki, Cio-Cio-San’s devoted maid who sees right past his gentlemanly facade, and Michael Sumuel as Sharpless, the sympathetic American consul. James Conlon, "the most accomplished music director currently working on the podium of an American opera house" (Opera News), opens the season conducting Puccini's poignant and unforgettable score.

From Bizet’s iconic and seductive Carmen, to Donizetti’s yearningly romantic O mio Fernando, journeying via Puccini’s dramatically passionate and soaring Preludio Sinfonico and Mascagni’s hymnal Intermezzo Cavalleria there is something for everyone to enjoy.

In Italian, the celebration of 100 year anniversary is called a "Centenario." This celebration of Giacomo Puccini is celebrating that it has been 100 years since his death. While Puccini-nario may be difficult to say, it is not difficult to see why BARN OPERA would join the world-wide celebration of this master of Italian opera. Known as being a man of the theatre, it is no wonder why such dramatic titles such as Tosca, La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot would be written by him. However, while this celebration concert will of course have favorites such as Vissi D'Arte, Un. Bel Di Vedremo, and Nessun Dorma, there will be music from his lesser-known works like Edgar, Le Villi, Manon Lescaut and La Fanciulla del West.

Following the 2023-24 season’s traditional production of Puccini’s La bohème, in September the Atlanta Opera Discoveries series continues the “Bohème Project” with two immersive productions at Pullman Yards. Produced by Tomer Zvulun with Ukranian-Israeli American designer, director, and multimedia artist Vita Tzykun, the Discoveries series “Bohème Project” comprises repertory performances of a modern-day La bohème–with the COVID-19 pandemic in place of tuberculosis—with the Broadway show it inspired, Jonathan Larson’s Rent, which updated Puccini’s story of friendship, passion, and art by setting it in the midst of the 1990’s HIV/AIDS crisis. Both performed on the same set, with the action taking place in and around the seated audience, the productions will feature different casts and musical forces and will alternate nights for most of the run.

Joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Chorus and BBC Singers are Grammy Award-winning American soprano Angel Blue and one of Britain’s best-loved pianists, Sir Stephen Hough. The band's farewell concert on this beautiful stage requires ravishing music and a fantastic soloist. The Danish opera star Brit-Tone Müllertz, who is world-renowned on the opera stage, will enchant the audience with arias from the most beloved works in opera and operetta literature. Livgarden's Music Corps will also deliver exuberant waltzes, tight marches and soft sounds from Baermann's Adagio with clarinetist Martin Kejser. The concert is led by conductor Giordano Bellincampi, who has served as artistic director of the Livgardens Music Corps during this period when Stærekassen has been the home of the music corps.

He had the perfect subject matter in the compelling story of the young Prince Ivan outwitting the evil sorcerer Kashchey and freeing the 13 enchanted Princesses with the help of the magical Firebird. Tianyi Lu also conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Puccini’s effortlessly lyrical Preludio sinfonico, Dukas’s retelling of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tale and a new Cello Concerto by Francisco Coll, powered by dances ranging from the tango to the waltz.

Chamber music, show tunes, opera, and more! “Nate’s World: Songs of Love” sets famous arias side by side with classic popular songs and virtuosic instrumental interludes, all touching on aspects of love. From La bohème to Leonard Bernstein, Carmen to a country ballad, these are all filled with timeless, universal sentiments, and chamber music’s exquisite intimacy is the perfect setting. Conceived, curated, and performed by Nate Farrington, principal bassist of the Los Angeles Opera, joined by special guest soprano Kathleen O'Mara and PCMF Resident Artists Susie Park and Henry Kramer.

With Puccini's "The Girl from the West", the gold digging environment moves from the rough life around the saloon in the western USA into the grand amphitheater of the gravel pit in Opera Hedeland in the summer of 2024.

In the Wild West, the strong woman Minnie resides in her gentle regime. She is a woman with a bone in her nose and a heart for the true values ​​of life when she has to act in a male-dominated world.

True love forms the focal point of the story, as the gifted Minnie must fight for love after falling in love with a wanted bandit, so that they can face a common future.

Minnie is thus a strong female figure and she is the rallying point for the men in Puccini's opera, which is unusual for his plays, where the women have otherwise been through great suffering.

Puccini’s gift for mesmerising melodies captures the essence of romance and love at first sight between a Parisian courtesan, Magda, and her naive and ardent admirer Ruggero. Magda, a metaphorical swallow, is torn between the life she needs and the life she knows.

Puccini’s exquisite score is warm and sensually delicate. It vividly shapes the characters and choruses, evoking the beguiling essence of Parisian life. La Rondine navigates a spectrum of emotions from the gaiety of the City of Love, the bittersweet sorrow of regret, and the sensuality of young love.
