This question lies at the heart of Tosca, uniquely blending musical brilliance with a gripping plot and historical events with archetypes of the operatic stage. Throughout a single fateful night, the audience follows the story of the singer Floria Tosca, the painter Mario Cavaradossi and the unscrupulous police chief Scarpia, a night that ends fatally for all three. The greatest stars of opera history have graced Boleslaw Barlog’s historically accurate production for over 50 years. Joining this chronicle for the first time in this season’s initial run are, among others, Aleksandra Kurzak, who has already sung Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Opera in London, and Roberto Alagna, who showcases his exceptional tenor in another role at Deutsche Oper Berlin. Antonino Fogliani, one of the most gifted Puccini conductors of our time, will be appearing at Deutsche Oper Berlin for the first time.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan-Akademie regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. As can be expected at a lunch concert, catering is available from 12 noon until shortly before the concert begins.

From the very start of Puccini's wintry La Bohème, the orchestra is transformed into an oversized fireplace: a flickering fiery scherzo full of orchestral colors that warms the freezing bohemians. We’ll be hearing the latter in a top-class cast – including Carolina López Moreno as Mimì and star tenor Benjamin Bernheim as Rodolfo. The production will feature music director Marco Armiliato, a globally sought-after maestro who is engaged at the Met, La Scala, and the Wiener Staatsoper.

This was the young Puccini’s very first opera which he wrote for a competition in Italy long before he became the operatic giant we all know and love. Sadly, his entry didn’t win and so he later returned to it, re-wrote certain parts  and relaunched it to considerable acclaim in Milan. Unfortunately, being a relatively short opera, this early gem was soon eclipsed by the titanic successes of “La Boheme”, “Tosca” and “Turandot”. As a result, this Gothic, Central European story of an unfaithful mortal who is forced to dance himself to death by vengeful fairies (and yes, this is indeed the same story as the much more well known ballet, “Giselle” by Adolphe Adam!), all but disappeared, unjustly, from the verismo repertoire. It remained rarely performed until a few years ago when our friends at Opera Rara made an award winning recording starring the famous Albanian soprano, Ermonela Jaho, who many of you will have seen bringing down the house in our Silver Anniversary Gala Concert with the BBC in July 2025.

Opera Wilmington presents a double bill of passion, sacrifice, and unforgettable music with the staging of these two Italian one-acts.

The pairing, according to Opera Wilmington Artistic Director Nancy King, “offers a compelling narrative arc, putting women’s voices at the center of both works.”

Puccini was inspired by the success of Mascagni’s one-act Cavalleria rusticana to write three one-acts himself. That set, which he called Il Trittico (The Triptich), consists of Suor Angelica, Il Tabaro and Gianni Schicci. Suor Angelica, however, is often staged on its own.

Set in a convent, the opera tells of the personal heartbreak and uplifting religious redemption of a young sister, Suor Angelica.

Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana is a tale of love, jealousy and revenge, set in Sicily. The opera’s Intermezzo is often performed as an orchestral piece.

She has it all: love, marriage and a beautiful house on top of a hill overlooking the ocean. For Pinkerton she joins church, angering her family, who abandons her. Madama Butterfly, as Pinkerton lovingly calls her, does it all for love. Pinkerton on the other hand, sees her only as a beautiful distraction before he gets married to an American woman: Like the houses in Japan, also marriage is for rent. He leaves her behind and she never loses hope, that he returns. When Pinkerton finally returns, he doesn’t come alone: His wife Kate is with him to pick up the little boy, that Cio-Cio-San has born. A garret in Paris on a cold winter’s day around Christmas. Rodolfo, a writer, and Marcello, a painter, are working on their masterpieces. They have no money to buy food, pay the rent or fuel the stove. Colline, a philosopher, returns from the pawn shop empty handed, having failed to get rid of some books. Only Schaunard, a musician, has managed to come up with some victuals, kindling, cigars and cash, so off they go to Café Momus - without Rodolfo, who’s trying to work. Mimì, the embroiderer from next door, arrives to ask for a match to light her candle with. She collapses and loses her key; cue for Rodolfo to fall in love with Mimì, who is terminally ill with TB, although he dumps her two months later because the prospect of her ailment getting steadily worse in her freezing home is too much for him. Six months go by. Musetta, Marcello’s ex, arrives with Mimì, whose condition is grave. Musetta sells some earrings with a view to buying medicine; Colline gives up his coat. Gratitude and happiness for a short while. Rodolfo thinks Mimì is sleeping and her body regenerating, …but in fact she’s dead.

From Opera Holland Park’s foundation in 1996, Puccini has been central to the company’s programming. From multiple productions of La bohème, Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly and La rondine across three decades to individual highlights including the Royal Philharmonic Society Award-nominated 2015 production of Il Trittico, our first staging of Le Villi in 2023 and the triumphant 2024 revival of Stephen Barlow’s ground-breaking 2012 production of Tosca, our work has included a semi-staging of the early romance, Edgar and a concert performance of the Messa di Gloria. In 2026, following Martin Lloyd-Evans’s new production of La fanciulla del West, the company’s third staging of this opera, we complete this journey of discovery with a concert staging of Puccini’s final opera, Turandot, completed after the composer’s death in 1924 by Franco Alfano.

“Al’alba vincerò - at sunrise I will win“, the unknown prince bawls out to the city, making him one of the few heroes of Italian opera whose arioso sleeplessness is due to confidence rather than despair. The others have to despair instead. Primarily the inhabitants of the city, in which – “nessun dorma“ – no one is allowed to sleep because everyone has to search for the name of the unknown man on the highest orders and under threat of the death penalty. That Turandot should actually end well by Puccini’s standards can be felt – like so much else – in the central tenor aria of the work. Puccini knew better than anyone how to force an emotional involvement on the audience through the merciless immediacy of his musical language. The piece itself ends happily, albeit without Puccini, who had to lay down his arms in his battle against laryngeal cancer before the finale was finished. And so Turandot joins the ranks of the great opera fragments of the 20th century. But not only is the piece more or less a chimera, the title character herself also seems to be primarily a projection: “Turandot does not exist! Only nothingness exists“, Ping, Pang and Pong warn the unknown prince to prevent him from attempting the three riddles that need to be solved in order to win the emperor’s daughter Turandot. Anna Sophie Mahler, whose Stuttgart production of Saint François d’Assise 2023 was named the “most unusual opera experience of the year“ by the journal Opernwelt, will set out 100 years after the premiere of Puccini’s enigmatic last opera in search of the “fluid of love“ with which the composer wanted to pacify nerves stretched to the limit in the opera’s finale. Because, this much is certain: this fluidum would also be useful today.

A tale of poor artists in Paris’ Bohemian Quarter, friends Rodolfo and Marcello are in love with two very different women. Musetta is a flirt who is in constant battle with Marcello. Floria Tosca, a young opera singer, agrees to sleep with Scarpia, Rome's corrupt Chief of Police, in order to save her lover's life. Instead, she stabs Scarpia in the chest killing him. But Scarpia's promises also turn out to be hollow. Her lover is executed at the Castel Sant'Angelo prison. Pursued by guards, she jumps to her death from the Castle's tower. One of Puccini's most famous works, Tosca  packs a dramatic force and a level of suspense unsurpassed in the verismo repertoire.

The Chinese princess Turandot is obliged to marry only the man who solves her three riddles - a vow that has already cost countless princes their lives. Anyone who fails will be executed that very night. However, when Calaf, a Tartar Prince, sees Turandot, he cannot resist her enigmatic beauty. He solves the tasks, but the princess refuses the marriage. Calaf turns the game round: In order to avoid the marriage, Turandot must discover his name before dawn - a task that pushes everyone to their limits. The aria "Nessun dorma" marks the opera's dramatic climax. But after the naming of the name, "Love", Puccini's last work ends with the note "e poi "Tristano" - "and then Tristan". Led by an all-female, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) creative team, the production offers a fresh, culturally informed perspective on this timeless classic.

Representatives of Italian church music will gather in Mainz Cathedral for the 9th Symphony Concert. Giovanni Gabrieli, born in 1554, was a Venetian church musician at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice and one of the most important musicians of the Venetian School at the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque. His avant-garde work attracted musicians from all over Europe to Venice. His most famous student was the German Heinrich Schütz. He made early use of the basso continuo in his works, and his Sonata pian' e forte contains some of the earliest dynamic markings, i.e. markings for the specific use of volume in music. The works of the German Baroque, which culminated in the music of J.S. Bach, are based on this tradition, the roots of which lie in this very Venetian school under Giovanni Gabrieli.

Opera in Concert: Puccini’s Il trittico

The world premiere of Giacomo Puccini's final masterpiece took place at La Scala on April 25, 1926. The composer had died in Brussels on November 29, 1924, without being able to complete the score. Arturo Toscanini had asked Franco Alfano to prepare a finale, which remained problematic. On the night of the premiere, Toscanini placed his baton on the last note composed by Puccini, upon Liù's death: a gesture that has remained in the history of La Scala and is also remembered in the production conceived by Davide Livermore for Puccini's centenary. A rich production, combining technological marvels and artisanal expertise, revived under the baton of Nicola Luisotti.
