The Chinese princess Turandot swears that she will not marry any man – except for the one who can solve her three-question riddle. Giacomo Puccini's final, unfinished opera tackles fairy-tale and socio-philosophical questions at the same time. The OPERA’s new production is staged by acclaimed choreographer Dóra Barta – a woman interpreting the most mysterious female title role in the world opera. Her staging approaches the work through the exciting stage language of movement and physical theatre as well as from the perspective of commedia dell'arte, from which Carlo Gozzi also drew inspiration at the time for his play on which the opera is based on. The abstract nature of the language of dance and movement helps to bring the philosophical content of the work into focus, while the aspect of power also remains important, because Turandot’s father, the emperor is not only looking for a husband for her daughter, but also for the future ruler for China…

The action takes place over less than 24 hours, making it an intense experience! The plot centres around three main characters – Rome’s diva Floria Tosca, her lover Mario Cavaradossi (a painter and republican) and the corrupt Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia. Scarpia has long lusted after Tosca, and when he suspects Cavaradossi of assisting an escaped political prisoner, seizes the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. He will manipulate Tosca into revealing the prisoner’s hiding place and Cavaradossi’s involvement, and have her for himself. When Cavaradossi is captured, Scarpia offers Tosca a horrific bargain – she must give herself to Scarpia, or her lover is killed… what will she choose, and who will survive?

This production features a stellar cast, including thrilling debuts and the return of San Diego Opera favorites. Kathleen O’Mara and Tasha Koontz share the role of Mimì, with performances by Joshua Blue and César Delgado as Rodolfo. The cast also includes Latonia Moore as Musetta, Leroy Davis as Marcello, and Harold Wilson as Colline, under the baton of the debut conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, leading the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.

The opera is sung in Italian with English and Spanish subtitles projected above the stage, ensuring an accessible and immersive experience for all attendees. Enhance your evening with a pre-opera talk, starting at 6:40 pm before the Friday and Saturday performances and at 1:10 pm before the Sunday matinee, offering deeper insights into the opera's themes and production. Rodolfo falls deeply in love with the delicate seamstress Mimi, while Marcello is entangled in a tumultuous relationship with the flirtatious Musetta. Amidst their artistic pursuits and poverty, the bonds of friendship are tested as love and jealousy intertwine.

Three thrilling leading ladies trade off as the volatile diva Floria Tosca. First, soprano Aleksandra Kurzak reprises her riveting portrayal of the title role, starring alongside tenor SeokJong Baek as her revolutionary lover, Cavaradossi, and baritone George Gagnidze as the sadistic chief of police Scarpia. Later in the season, the extraordinary Lise Davidsen sings Tosca for her first time at the Met, alongside tenor Freddie De Tommaso in his eagerly anticipated company debut and powerhouse baritone Quinn Kelsey. And in the winter, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and tenor Brian Jagde reunite following their acclaimed 2021 performances of the lead pair, joining forces with legendary bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, who returns to the Met after more than a decade. Maestro Xian Zhang conducts.

Directed by the Goya Award-winning Mario Gas, this stunning Madame Butterfly gets a cinematic twist as all the action takes place on a 1930s film set. Korean soprano Karah Son reprises her signature role as Puccini’s tragic heroine trying to find her way in a world dominated by men. Tenor Jonathan Tetelman is the callous Pinkerton, with Hyona Kim as Suzuki, Cio-Cio-San’s devoted maid who sees right past his gentlemanly facade, and Michael Sumuel as Sharpless, the sympathetic American consul. James Conlon, "the most accomplished music director currently working on the podium of an American opera house" (Opera News), opens the season conducting Puccini's poignant and unforgettable score.

In Italian, the celebration of 100 year anniversary is called a "Centenario." This celebration of Giacomo Puccini is celebrating that it has been 100 years since his death. While Puccini-nario may be difficult to say, it is not difficult to see why BARN OPERA would join the world-wide celebration of this master of Italian opera. Known as being a man of the theatre, it is no wonder why such dramatic titles such as Tosca, La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot would be written by him. However, while this celebration concert will of course have favorites such as Vissi D'Arte, Un. Bel Di Vedremo, and Nessun Dorma, there will be music from his lesser-known works like Edgar, Le Villi, Manon Lescaut and La Fanciulla del West.

Following the 2023-24 season’s traditional production of Puccini’s La bohème, in September the Atlanta Opera Discoveries series continues the “Bohème Project” with two immersive productions at Pullman Yards. Produced by Tomer Zvulun with Ukranian-Israeli American designer, director, and multimedia artist Vita Tzykun, the Discoveries series “Bohème Project” comprises repertory performances of a modern-day La bohème–with the COVID-19 pandemic in place of tuberculosis—with the Broadway show it inspired, Jonathan Larson’s Rent, which updated Puccini’s story of friendship, passion, and art by setting it in the midst of the 1990’s HIV/AIDS crisis. Both performed on the same set, with the action taking place in and around the seated audience, the productions will feature different casts and musical forces and will alternate nights for most of the run.

The band's farewell concert on this beautiful stage requires ravishing music and a fantastic soloist. The Danish opera star Brit-Tone Müllertz, who is world-renowned on the opera stage, will enchant the audience with arias from the most beloved works in opera and operetta literature. Livgarden's Music Corps will also deliver exuberant waltzes, tight marches and soft sounds from Baermann's Adagio with clarinetist Martin Kejser. The concert is led by conductor Giordano Bellincampi, who has served as artistic director of the Livgardens Music Corps during this period when Stærekassen has been the home of the music corps.

Tianyi Lu also conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Puccini’s effortlessly lyrical Preludio sinfonico, Dukas’s retelling of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tale and a new Cello Concerto by Francisco Coll, powered by dances ranging from the tango to the waltz.

Chamber music, show tunes, opera, and more! “Nate’s World: Songs of Love” sets famous arias side by side with classic popular songs and virtuosic instrumental interludes, all touching on aspects of love. From La bohème to Leonard Bernstein, Carmen to a country ballad, these are all filled with timeless, universal sentiments, and chamber music’s exquisite intimacy is the perfect setting. Conceived, curated, and performed by Nate Farrington, principal bassist of the Los Angeles Opera, joined by special guest soprano Kathleen O'Mara and PCMF Resident Artists Susie Park and Henry Kramer.

With Puccini's "The Girl from the West", the gold digging environment moves from the rough life around the saloon in the western USA into the grand amphitheater of the gravel pit in Opera Hedeland in the summer of 2024.

In the Wild West, the strong woman Minnie resides in her gentle regime. She is a woman with a bone in her nose and a heart for the true values ​​of life when she has to act in a male-dominated world.

True love forms the focal point of the story, as the gifted Minnie must fight for love after falling in love with a wanted bandit, so that they can face a common future.

Minnie is thus a strong female figure and she is the rallying point for the men in Puccini's opera, which is unusual for his plays, where the women have otherwise been through great suffering.

Puccini’s gift for mesmerising melodies captures the essence of romance and love at first sight between a Parisian courtesan, Magda, and her naive and ardent admirer Ruggero. Magda, a metaphorical swallow, is torn between the life she needs and the life she knows.

Puccini’s exquisite score is warm and sensually delicate. It vividly shapes the characters and choruses, evoking the beguiling essence of Parisian life. La Rondine navigates a spectrum of emotions from the gaiety of the City of Love, the bittersweet sorrow of regret, and the sensuality of young love.

Burleigh, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, and Damien Sneed — plus works by Copland, Mozart, Puccini, Gershwin, and Strauss.

Set in early 20th-century Japan, the story tells of Ciòciò-san, a very young geisha, and Lieutenant Pinkerton, a U.S. Naval officer entranced by her beauty. Pinkerton will do anything to have her and takes part in a marriage ceremony but, inevitably, he returns to America. Butterfly never loses faith that one day her love will return, and she raises their child alone, rejecting other suitors. Three years later, Pinkerton does reappear but, devastatingly, with an American wife.

GRAMMY-winning soprano Jessica Rivera, who appears as Donna Elvira in Cincinnati Opera’s season-opening production of Don Giovanni, returns to perform “Canciones de Mi Alma Latina: Songs of My Latin Soul,” an exploration of her musical career through the lens of her Peruvian-American heritage. Rivera will perform music by Osvaldo Golijov, Fernando Obradors, Manuel de Falla, Antonio de Salazar, and Federico Moreno Torroba, as well as operatic favorites by Puccini and Mozart. Joining Rivera is her longtime collaborator Mark Carver on piano.
