San Francisco Opera is taking opera out of the Opera House for Bohème Out of the Box. These free, live performances of an abridged version of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, featuring powerful emotions and soaring arias, will travel to outdoor locations throughout the Bay Area this spring. The very first opera to be presented by San Francisco Opera 101 years ago, Puccini’s popular work of love and loss among a group of bohemian artists will be performed in an intimate one-hour version on a converted shipping-container-turned-mobile opera stage.

Directed by Jose Maria Condemi, Bohème Out of the Box, sung in Italian and featuring English narration, will be performed by guest artists and San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellows with piano accompaniment. Guests will be able to read live English translations on their smartphones.

"Tosca" will unfold in three acts, each performed in a different, historically significant location within Cento, offering spectators not just an opera but a journey through time and space. The journey begins at the Basilica Collegiata di San Biagio, a baroque church with Renaissance influences, rich in art, setting the scene for the opera's dramatic first act. The narrative then moves to the Monumento ai Caduti, a monument reminiscent of Rome's imperial grandeur, for the second act, and concludes at the Rocca di Cento, a fortress that will serve as the setting for the opera's climactic finale.

Kimono designer Sueko Oshimoto of SK Kimono, and the South Bay Singers led by Naoko Suga also return for this production, which was first premiered in 2019 in LA’s Little Tokyo and was described as “on a visual scale beyond anything it has taken on before – a sumptuously costumed, fully staged, bilingual co-production” by San Francisco Classical Voice.

Inspired by Alfred de Musset’s play "Le coupe et les lèvres," and set against the backdrop of medieval Flanders, "Edgar" has undergone several revisions since its premiere in 1889, with this production showcasing Puccini’s 1905 edition. 

Audiences will have the opportunity to experience three semi-staged performances, offering a unique chance to engage with Puccini's vivid characterizations of regret and redemption. This production continues Opera Holland Park's tradition of exploring operatic rarities, under the direction of Ruth Knight.
