The singer Floria Tosca, who is even invited to the royal court, and the painter Mario Cavaradossi are respected and adored artists, yet their standing does not safeguard them against the malicious police chief Baron Scarpia. Cavaradossi dies not only because he, a Voltairean, tries to save the life of Cesare Angelotti, the former Consul of the Roman Republic, but also for being Tosca’s lover, Scarpia’s rival. Giacomo Puccini had mulled over Victorien Sardou’s La Tosca ever since 1889, when he saw in Milan a performance of the drama, starring the celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt.

Passion, politics, and betrayal collide in Tosca—a breathtaking opera where love burns bright against the dark tides of tyranny. Set amidst upheaval and war in 1800s Rome, the fiery singer Floria Tosca is caught in a deadly triangle between her beloved, the revolutionary artist Mario Cavaradossi, and Baron Scarpia, the corrupt, sadistic chief of police.

Puccini’s masterful score will crackle with emotion under the baton of VO Music Director Jacques Lacombe, as Floria navigates a brutal game of power and sacrifice where even her voice—the thing she holds most sacred—becomes a weapon. This new co-production with Pacific Opera Victoria is directed by their celebrated Artistic Director, Brenna Corner, with a cast that includes baritone Gregory Dahl, who has recently stunned VO audiences as both Marcello in La Bohème and Don Pasquale, David Pomeroy, who The New York Times called “a powerful, agile tenor,” and the captivating Lebanese-Canadian soprano Joyce El-Khoury in the title role.

More than a tale of doomed love, Tosca is a searing portrait of resistance in the face of oppression, where art and faith are tested against cruelty and injustice. It’s opera at its most visceral—intimate yet grand, deeply human and tragically heroic. In Tosca, the personal becomes political, and every choice cuts deep.

Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Directed by Mariusz Treliński and designed by Boris Kudlička, this production of Madama Butterfly premiered over a quarter of a century ago, in 1999. It was an epoch-making performance. Just like Emperor Meiji modernised Japan at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Treliński and Kudlička revolutionised the idiom of Polish opera. Coincidentally, the Meiji era (1868–1912) is when the story of Madame Butterfly is set – the libretto cites the year 1904. The period saw Japan’s transformation from a feudal state dominated by the Tokugawa shogunate into a modern country with a thriving economy and culture. Treliński and Kudlička’s achievement was an event of similar magnitude for Polish (and international) opera. Owing to their imaginativeness and sensitivity, the two artists paved the way for the introduction of a more accessible and universal language into contemporary opera directing. The production is not just a story about Butterfly’s love or a study of the clash between two cultures; it is a token of cultural transformation.

One hundred and thirty years after its premiere in Turin, La bohème continues to hold an immortal place among the most performed and beloved works in the operatic repertoire. Perhaps it is the allure of the seemingly carefree artistic milieu of Paris. Perhaps it is Puccini’s ravishing score, with its recurring motifs that follow each character and render the drama so immediate. Above all, it is surely the timeless portrayal of love – genuine and fragile – in a world where it is too often cheaply traded.

Magda leaves her wealthy patron when she meets the young Ruggero. But the feeling of first love cannot be relived. Puccini's "La rondine" (The Swallow), commissioned by Vienna's Carl Theater, is an unusual blend of opera and operetta that puzzled critics: some found it too heavy, others too light. Despite several revisions to the ending, Puccini considered his "problem child" a gem that remains rarely performed to this day. Christof Loy directs this work as an impressive rediscovery. This was the young Puccini’s very first opera which he wrote for a competition in Italy long before he became the operatic giant we all know and love. Sadly, his entry didn’t win and so he later returned to it, re-wrote certain parts and relaunched it to considerable acclaim in Milan. Unfortunately, being a relatively short opera, this early gem was soon eclipsed by the titanic successes of “La Boheme”, “Tosca” and “Turandot”. As a result, this Gothic, Central European story of an unfaithful mortal who is forced to dance himself to death by vengeful fairies (and yes, this is indeed the same story as the much more well known ballet, “Giselle” by Adolphe Adam!), all but disappeared, unjustly, from the verismo repertoire. It remained rarely performed until a few years ago when our friends at Opera Rara made an award winning recording starring the famous Albanian soprano, Ermonela Jaho, who many of you will have seen bringing down the house in our Silver Anniversary Gala Concert with the BBC in July 2025.

Opera Wilmington presents a double bill of passion, sacrifice, and unforgettable music with the staging of these two Italian one-acts.

The pairing, according to Opera Wilmington Artistic Director Nancy King, “offers a compelling narrative arc, putting women’s voices at the center of both works.”

Puccini was inspired by the success of Mascagni’s one-act Cavalleria rusticana to write three one-acts himself. That set, which he called Il Trittico (The Triptich), consists of Suor Angelica, Il Tabaro and Gianni Schicci. Suor Angelica, however, is often staged on its own.

Set in a convent, the opera tells of the personal heartbreak and uplifting religious redemption of a young sister, Suor Angelica.

Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana is a tale of love, jealousy and revenge, set in Sicily. The opera’s Intermezzo is often performed as an orchestral piece.

“Al’alba vincerò - at sunrise I will win“, the unknown prince bawls out to the city, making him one of the few heroes of Italian opera whose arioso sleeplessness is due to confidence rather than despair. The others have to despair instead. Primarily the inhabitants of the city, in which – “nessun dorma“ – no one is allowed to sleep because everyone has to search for the name of the unknown man on the highest orders and under threat of the death penalty. That Turandot should actually end well by Puccini’s standards can be felt – like so much else – in the central tenor aria of the work. Puccini knew better than anyone how to force an emotional involvement on the audience through the merciless immediacy of his musical language. The piece itself ends happily, albeit without Puccini, who had to lay down his arms in his battle against laryngeal cancer before the finale was finished. And so Turandot joins the ranks of the great opera fragments of the 20th century. But not only is the piece more or less a chimera, the title character herself also seems to be primarily a projection: “Turandot does not exist! Only nothingness exists“, Ping, Pang and Pong warn the unknown prince to prevent him from attempting the three riddles that need to be solved in order to win the emperor’s daughter Turandot. Anna Sophie Mahler, whose Stuttgart production of Saint François d’Assise 2023 was named the “most unusual opera experience of the year“ by the journal Opernwelt, will set out 100 years after the premiere of Puccini’s enigmatic last opera in search of the “fluid of love“ with which the composer wanted to pacify nerves stretched to the limit in the opera’s finale. Almost incidentally, Angelica learns of her son's tragic death. She reaches for the poison – then, in the distance, she hears angelic voices...

Giacomo Puccini's incomparable masterpiece, “La bohème” is a beloved tale of love and bitter tragedy. “La bohème” has inspired audiences for more than 130 years with its glorious melodies illuminating the eternal story of starving artists and star-crossed lovers in the Latin quarter of Paris. Puccini sets the poet Rodolpho and the fragile Mimi in the garrets of Paris and the raucous streets of the Latin Quarter. Amidst the revelry, the lovers and their artist friends, Colline the philosopher, Schaunard the musician, Marcello the painter and his fiery girlfriend Musetta, charge headlong into a series of tragic trysts and romantic misadventures.

Some of the most cherished melodies in all of opera, poignant and touching moments of heartfelt emotion, true love and ultimate loss, are yours to wrap your heart around. It is said that when Puccini penned the final notes which accompany Mimi's tragic death in La Bohème, he wept copiously. Audiences forever after have been doing the same thing. Let the music and the sheer, human helplessness of the characters carry the day; but be warned, Rimrock Opera's La Bohème is a three-handkerchief show!

A tale of poor artists in Paris’ Bohemian Quarter, friends Rodolfo and Marcello are in love with two very different women. Musetta is a flirt who is in constant battle with Marcello. Mimi and Rodolfo are devoted lovers with no quarrels, except with the poverty which has stolen Mimi’s health. Despite all their hardships, the friends live lives of joy and generosity until death comes.
