Mozart was just 14 years old when he wrote this rare gem that has all the hallmarks of musical brilliance and hormonal adolescence. Angst, risky behavior, and fraught romance never sounded quite so good. Opera Philadelphia’s first production of Mitridate, re di Ponto stars blockbuster tenor Lawrence Brownlee as the titular king, alongside countertenor and OP General Director & President Anthony Roth Costanzo as his eldest son, Farnace, and soprano Meredith Wohlgemuth as the younger son, Sifare. Glittering soprano Lauren Snouffer portrays Aspasia, the woman all three love.

Matt Aucoin’s Music for New Bodies, created in collaboration with acclaimed director Peter Sellars, is a bold operatic meditation on our shifting place in the natural world. Fusing poetic texts from Jorie Graham with visceral soundscapes, Aucoin crafts a work that is at once urgent and transcendent, while Sellars’ visionary staging brings the music into striking visual focus. Together, they invite us to imagine new forms of life, connection, and transformation.

Funny, elegant, erotic, melancholic: women in society are viewed in the panorama of a fake world. A society lady in a midlife crisis leaves her marriage with a young lover, but soon wisely leaves him with a younger woman. A bon vivant who thinks he can exchange his noble name for fresh meat and money is thrown out. A boy of rank and name changes from one great love to another and a young daughter from a nouveau riche family still believes in the one and only. All beautiful appearances, full of waltz music, kitsch and sugar coating - with a dash of biting irony and yet full of truth.

How can we confront injustice in society? Mahatma Gandhi, the famous Indian freedom fighter, developed a spiritual response to this as a young lawyer in South Africa: "Satyagraha", holding on to the truth. The truth is propagated here as the most effective means in the fight against injustice, the opposing side is to be convinced by peaceful means, through non-violent resistance. Philip Glass has dedicated an emphatic work of art to this idea with his great choral opera Satyagraha : His catchy minimal music transports us to other spheres of consciousness, the timeless verses from the Bhagavad Gita invite us to inner contemplation - an inspiring experience.

The Los Angeles Times heralded Derrick Skye's music as "something to savor...enormous fun to listen to”. In his sparkling new cantata, Skye surveys our troubled world and, setting his own original poetry, finds a humane and optimistic response. In dialogue, we present the first-ever Carnegie Hall performance of a luminous choral-orchestral work by Mozart's Viennese contemporary Marianna von Martines, alongside the 18-year-old Mozart's exuberant treatment of the same text. Rounding out the program: a toe-tapping triptych by Bartok, whom Skye has named as a source of inspiration.
