In modern times, "Cenerentola" evokes the wondrous realm of childhood. Yet, Rossini and Ferretti aimed to tone down the fairy tale elements in their opera. I’ve allowed for a touch of enchantment, transforming the guardian Alidoro into an all-knowing demigod puppeteer of our narrative.
Alidoro will initiate the tale by opening a grand scenic book marked "Cenerentola" and turn its pages through the unfolding scenes, conjuring brooms and carriages, even puppeteering the characters during the complex "Questo è un nodo avviluppato."
The costumes blur the lines between the 18th and 19th centuries, contrasting the old, embodied by Don Magnifico, with the new in Don Ramiro, leaping into Sun King-style extravagance with Dandini.
Working with Rossini always inspires me to craft a choreography that echoes the opera's musical structure. "Cenerentola" especially lends itself to playful and nearly surreal moments, like the brilliantly conceived end of the first act.
