Franz Schubert set the scene of the "cheerful," "capricious trout" from Christian Schubart's poem to music in one of his most famous and popular songs. So popular that, a few years after this popular success, he used the themes of the "Trout" song as the basis for a sequel: the equally cheerful "Trout Quintet." Within Schubert's oeuvre, the posthumously published piano quintet is the only one of its kind. Before the Simply Quartet crowns its Ordenssaal concert with this captivating and characterful piece, it will perform excerpts from the first string quartet by jazz musician and composer Wynton Marsalis and the late-discovered and published "Poem" by the late Romantic composer Rebecca Clarke.

Finding coherence in the complex – that is the Simply Quartet's recipe for success. After winning several international competitions, including the Carl Nielsen Competition in Copenhagen and the Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna, the young ensemble is one of the rising stars of the quartet scene. For their debut in our quartet series, the four musicians will perform classics of the genre such as Mozart's “Hunting Quartet” and Grieg's Opus 27, as well as Wynton Marsalis’ jazzy Creole Contradanzas and American composer Rebecca Clarke’s thought-provoking Poem.

Female composers have long faced challenges, largely ignored by history. This year's chamber concert by the hr-Symphony Orchestra in Erbach offers the opportunity to experience several of them, showcasing their rich music and creative output. Clara Schumann, Lili Boulanger, and Rebecca Clarke are still familiar figures, but the same cannot be said for Isabella Leonarda, a 17th-century Italian nun who was among the most prolific composers of her era, or Marie Jaëll, a 19th-century French pianist and composer. The French composer Mélanie Bonis, whose works were mostly published under the pseudonym Mel Bonis in the 19th century, is also largely unknown in Germany, as is the Austrian Maria Theresia von Paradis, who was blind from childhood and a prominent figure in the Viennese Classical music scene as a pianist, singer, and composer. In this concert you can get to know them all, including Emilie Mayer, a 19th-century German composer who was celebrated during her lifetime as the "female Beethoven".

The violist Rebecca Clark, born in London in 1886, is one of England’s most important composers. When she anonymously submitted her Sonata for Viola and Piano, which is characterized by dense harmonies, intoxicating emotions and a high degree of virtuosity, to a competition in 1919, the jury assumed that Maurice Ravel was the composer. The fact that a woman was behind such a phenomenal work was inconceivable to the jury at that time. Almost a century later, Thomas Adès, one of the most frequently performed composers of our time, was also born in London. In his piece Catch from 1991, he plays with different combinations of the four instruments. The clarinet takes on the role of a wanderer: sometimes it is far away from the other instruments, sometimes it joins them. Adès’ piece is followed by Ludwig van Beethoven’s Septet, which premiered at the Vienna Burgtheater in 1800. Its six-movement structure goes back to courtly light music, but the symphonic features go far beyond. The work was already a public favorite in Beethoven’s time.

Now celebrating its 10th season together, the Telegraph Quartet formed with an equal passion for the standard chamber music repertoire and contemporary works alike. Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “…an incredibly valuable addition to the cultural landscape” and “powerfully adept… with a combination of brilliance and subtlety,” the Telegraph Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2016 Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the 2014 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. For their Newport debut, the Quartet explores compositions that may never have been fully experienced by the creators themselves. Rebecca Clarke, a truly accomplished composer of the 20th century, composed her Poem for String Quartet but would never see the work published and disseminated in her lifetime. Beethoven had begun losing his hearing by his late 20s and by the time the good-natured “Harp” Quartet was composed, its cheery quality belied the composer’s 11-year-long struggle with hearing loss that would have kept him from fully experiencing this work. Similarly, Smetana would not have been able to even hear his first string quartet at all, as he fell victim to severe hearing loss in 1874. His autobiographical string quartet, for all its joy and enthusiasm, ends with a piercing e-string note that denotes the onset of that hearing loss two years before the quartet’s creation.

Pixels Ensemble is a versatile group of chamber music players with a shared interest in performing the finest repertoire, from the classical period to the present day. Its players are all established soloists, chamber musicians, recording artists, orchestral principals and explorers of contemporary music. Formed in 2016 by pianist and director Ian Buckle, the group appears in a wide range of line-ups and combinations, lending itself to innovative programming and enabling huge variety within individual concerts. The are performing a work by Rebecca Clarke who is described as one of the most distinguished British female composers of the inter-war generation . In addition they offer Elgar’s Piano Quintet, described by the Gramophone magazine as “big chamber music, with at times an almost orchestral sonority to it.” Their programme is completed with a classic Mozart piano concerto providing an intimate chamber music quality.

Aaron Copland made four highly publicized government-sponsored trips to Latin America between 1941 and 1963. During these visits, he shared contemporary American concert music with Latin American audiences, including his own violin sonata, heard on tonight’s program. Back home, he drew US attention to the composers and musicians he met in Latin America, such as Heitor Villa-Lobos of Brazil and Silvestre Revueltas and Manuel Ponce of Mexico, all whom Copland knew personally and whose works are also featured. Another contemporary of Copland was the Black American composer William Grant Still, whose Panamanian Dances were inspired by a collection of Latin American folk songs. The history of Pan-American musical exchange predates Copland.

This special concert, taking place in the intimate setting of the Kleiner Saal at Gasteig HP8, is scheduled for Tuesday, 11 June 2024, at 8:00 PM. The evening is dedicated to celebrating the remarkable contributions of Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) to the 20th-century musical landscape, featuring her sonata for viola and piano alongside two violin sonatas.

Judith Ingolfsson, wielding both the viola and violin, alongside pianist Vladimir Stoupel, promises an engaging performance that bridges connections and tells stories through the heart of chamber music. This event not only showcases the duo's imaginative programming but also highlights their dedication to expanding the viola repertoire, including a tribute to Clarke's outstanding compositions.

The recent passing of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho ended a brilliant career in the highest echelons of the music world. Aure, a work for violin and viola, demonstrates her mastery and originality. Danny Elfman, prolific film composer (Spider-Man, Good Will Hunting), singer, and percussionist, turns his protean talents to the Piano Quartet, with amazing results. The ravishing renegade Rebecca Clarke explores both modern concepts and ancient styles with her duo-concertante Dumka. Lastly, the autobiographical String Quartet No. 1 (“From My Life”) of Bedřich Smetana, father of Czech nationalist music, closes our season with one of the most beloved works in the chamber repertoire.

South African soprano Golda Schultz has been gracing the stage of the world’s greatest opera houses—from the Metropolitan Opera to the Vienna State Opera. Equally at home in leading operatic roles as she is as a soloist with the world’s foremost orchestras and in the most venerated recital halls, she has quickly become a leading voice in a new generation of star singers. For her Princeton University Concerts debut, she brings the extraordinary warmth of her voice to a program hailed as “a love-letter to women in music” exploring themes of love, nature, folklore and belief from a distinctly female perspective. Discussing the program’s curation, she shares: “Emilie Mayer, whose music was never recorded, was a genius on the level with Beethoven, but she was forgotten the day after she died in 1883. Nadia Boulanger became one of the greatest pedagogues with a touch that defined American culture. Even when we forget these women, what they’ve done still remains.”

Mojave Trio is dedicated to presenting a wide variety of classical music from the standard repertoire of the 18th-19th centuries to new works of our time and has performed throughout Southern California at LA County Museum of Art, Monk Space, Pomona, Occidental and Scripps Colleges, and have been heard on the “Sundays Live” radio broadcast from LACMA's Bing Theater. Their Pomona College program features music by Rebecca Clarke, Nico Muhly, Gao Ping, and James Diaz.

Join us for a captivating evening as ROCO’s Connections Series continues on January 27, 2024, in collaboration with The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rienzi house museum. The concert will take place at 5:00 PM in the glorious ballroom of the Rienzi, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, located on Kirby Drive.

This special event, now at capacity, will feature a stunning program including Charles Loeffler's "Rhapsodies" and the world premiere of Nicky Sohn's "Colors of Life’s Garden," inspired by the plants and flowers in the 4.4-acre Rienzi Garden. The evening will also include performances of Margaret Bonds' "Troubled Water," Rebecca Clarke's "Morpheus," and Alyssa Morris' "Four Personalities: Yellow."
