Ensemble BREVE was inaugurated in 1985 in New York City as a group offering unique programs of music from many eras on period instruments, in historically informed style. BREVE refers to the essence of great music making — its heartbeat. A breve symbol originally defined the tactus (pulse) or a single beat. BREVE has toured the United States, Mexico, and Europe.

Lisa Terry and Webb Wiggins have explored and performed music together for several decades, most often with the Dryden Ensemble in Princeton. François Couperin's magnificent suites for viola da gamba and continuo have been the focus of many concerts and will be featured in their upcoming recording. In addition to the two suites published in 1728, Lisa will perform two 17th-century French suites for solo basse de viole, and Webb will perform two pieces by Armand-Louis Couperin which open a door to the astounding tastes of the next generation. Works by M. de Sainte-Colombe and Le Sieur de Machy round out the program.

By popular demand, BALAM presents a sequel performance from the Garden of Love. This version will reunite our winning artist team from the original work but add a new music trio to begin the show, as well as a third masked dance character. Return to the Garden of Love will begin with the Trio Sonata in D Major by Georg Philipp Telemann performed by expert period musicians. Immediately following this piece will be BALAM's new 30-minute theatrical sequel entertainment showcasing a mezzo-soprano and masked Baroque dancers performing as masked fantasy characters to the Entrée d’Apollon by Jean Baptiste Lully, transcription for solo harpsichord by Jean Henri d’Anglebert, excerpts from Francois Couperin’s Concert Royaux, and the aria “Sans Freyeur Dan Ce Bois” by Marc Antoine Charpentier. This magical and charming program suggests the Baroque opera entreact divertissement and combines all the performative arts: music, dance, costumes, and acted text.
