Musik für 3 Streicher, a product of the composer’s mid-20s, sets out to encompass the span of human emotions and experience. Ilya Gringolts, Lawrence Power and Nicolas Altstaedt begin their expedition through the string trio repertoire with two movements from Wolfgang Rihm’s monumental work. Their programme also includes the remarkable Ricercari by Roman Haubenatock-Ramati, who escaped Nazi and Stalinist persecution to join General Anders’s Polish Army and survived the Second World War to become editor of new music for Universal Edition in Vienna.

Tapiola Sinfonietta's artistic partner Nicolas Altstaedt once again performed as both cellist and conductor. Mozart offered Tchaikovsky an image of a time of happiness and a world of beauty, which he sought in his Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra. The version of the Variations that spread around the world was tampered with by cello soloist Fitzenhagen, but Altstaedt offers an opportunity to hear the work in the form the composer intended. Wilhelm Killmayer (1927-2017), who was active in Munich, experimented with modernism early in his career before surrendering to the tonal joy of life, La joie de vivre. This is also reflected in the Transylvanian folk dances that follow in the footsteps of Veressin Bartok with a lighter step. Haydn's energetic Symphony No. 70 shed optimism on the Esterházy princely court after a devastating fire.

“All aboard!” – Paul and his friend Lily set sail. They discover a sunken island, a ship among the stars, a city on the sea, and a golden fish which reveals to them the secrets of the deep. Boris Friedewald’s story Paul’s Journey to the Fish is inspired by the colourful marine paintings of Paul Klee – as is Sándor Veress’s sonorous Hommage à Paul Klee. Rufus Beck’s reading, Klee’s paintings, and music by Veress combine to form a magical meeting of storytelling, art, and music. This musical journey unfolds over two enchanting evenings, starting on Saturday, 23rd March 2024, at 8:00 pm in the historic Max Joseph Saal of the Munich Residence, followed by a Sunday performance on 24th March 2024, at 6:00 pm at the serene Tutzing, Evangelische Akademie.

The program promises an auditory feast, featuring a selection of masterpieces that span the breadth of chamber music. The evening begins with Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio für zwei Oboen und Englisch Horn C-Dur, op.87, followed by Francis Poulenc's Sonate pour deux clarinettes, FP 7, and Sándor Veress's Sonatina für Oboe, Klarinette und Fagott 1931. After an interval, the concert resumes with Carl Reinecke's Sonate e-moll Undine für Fl. u. Klav., op.167, Camille Saint-Saëns's Caprice sur des Airs Danois et Russes für Flöte, Oboe, Klarinette und Klavier, op. 79, and concludes with Francis Poulenc's Trio für Oboe, Fagott und Klavier.

The performances will showcase the talents of renowned musicians, including Ivanna Ternay on flute, Stefan Schilli and Melanie Jessica Rothman on oboe, Tobias Vogelmann on English horn, Christopher Patrick Corbett and Heinrich Treydte on clarinet, Jesús Villa Ordóñez on bassoon, and Lukas Maria Kuen on piano. Please note, due to illness in the ensemble, the program and participants have undergone changes.
