This program will explore the structure of operatic arias as antecedent to the Italian instrumental forms.  Works for voice and harp by Claudio Monteverdi and sonatas by Dario Castello for violin and harp will explore opposites.  We most deeply appreciate the standard sonata form’s storytelling structure by comparison to its structural opposite, the wildly unstructured stylus fantasticus.

Garth Newel Music Center

This program will contain a variety of music whose structure or style is of British origin.   It will feature traditional English, Irish, and Scottish ballads as they made their way to early American settings, as well as dance forms of England borrowed by composers from other European countries.  Featured will be baroque triple harp, baroque violin/fiddle, dulcimer, tin whistle, baroque flute, and vocalists.

Three Notch’d Road Baroque Ensemble – English Baroque Structures

Xacarilla explores the sumptuous sound world of 17th-c. Spanish songs and dances. “Cantos y Suspiros” tells of the pleasures and treacheries of love as depicted in nature by the birds, wind, sea, and forest. This rich poetic landscape is illuminated by the music of master composers Juan Hidalgo, Juan de Návas, José Marín, Cristóbal Galán, Santiago de Murcia, Diego Fernández de Huete, and others. Selected songs from a collection held at the Hispanic Society of America in New York City round out the program. Colombian soprano Camila Parias’ crystalline tone joins eloquent plucked strings, plaintive winds, and colorful percussion to bring to life these rarely-heard love songs. Learn More

Filigree Ensemble, featuring soprano Christina Kay and mezzo-soprano Kim Leeds, delves into music about the iconic figure, Mary, mother of Jesus. Works by female Baroque composers are paired with selections from the Cantigas de Santa Maria, exploring the complexity of Mother Mary as a human and divine figure through these epic — and sometimes even comic — miracle stories from the 13th century.
