Jacopo Peri holds a monumental place in the history of opera as its pioneering figure, often called the "father of opera." Living at the dawn of the Baroque era, Peri laid the foundation for the development of opera as a genre capable of exploring profound human emotions and stories, influencing generations of composers from Monteverdi to Handel and beyond. Our concert presentation of Peri’s Euridice will feature a cast of celebrated artists both familiar and new to Newberry and Haymarket audiences, and an orchestra of expert period instrumentalists assembled from within Chicago’s flourishing early-music scene and beyond.

Dame Jane Glover leads the Music of the Baroque Chorus, Orchestra, and international stars Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen and Heidi Stober in our first performances of Gluck’s emotionally charged Orfeo ed Euridice. Follow Orfeo’s desperate journey to the underworld as he battles fate to rescue his beloved Euridice, armed with nothing but his voice. With soaring arias like “Che farò senza Euridice,” dramatic choruses, and famous instrumental music including “Dance of the Blessed Spirits,” will music—and love—conquer all?

On Concert II, soprano Hannah De Priest, baritone Schyler Vargas, and pianist Brent Funderburk join artistic director Nicholas Phan for a program unpacking the question.

Curated by Phan, this program weaves musical explorations from classical and romantic composers to those writing art song today who are grappling with Shakespeare's texts, his iconic characters, and themes of love and loss explored in his writing.

In Concert I of The Song of the Bard, journey with us to the 16th and early 17th century, back to the time when William Shakespeare was deep in the writing of his acclaimed plays and sonnets. This concert allows audiences to explore the music of famed composers creating alongside Shakespeare.

Hear how contemporaries, such as John Dowland, Francesca Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi, Alfonso Ferrabosco II, and others were exploring music and literary themes during this crucial period for European art and music.

Concert I : Shakespeare's Time

Haymarket brings Handel’s blockbuster oratorio La Resurrezione to the stage with an updated nod to its visually sumptuous 1708 premiere. Building on Haymarket’s “brilliantly performed” (Chicago Tribune) films that incorporated projected scenic elements, designer Camilla Tassi makes her Haymarket debut with lavish projections inspired by eye-witness accounts of the first performances of this oratorio. Handel’s score is an opera in all but name, and demands breathtaking vocal and instrumental virtuosity. Early music specialist Christian Curnyn conducts the Haymarket Opera Orchestra with a star-studded cast led by soprano Sarah Brailey as the Angel and baritone Douglas Williams as Lucifer. Vocal fireworks combine with religious fervor in a heroic showdown between Heaven and Hell.

Saul’s insane jealousy tests the loving bond between David and Jonathan, ending on the battlefield with suicide and heartbreak. Haymarket returns to French Baroque opulence with the Chicago premiere of Charpentier’s tragic David et Jonathas.
