Join the SDSO as we celebrate American composers, both past and present.  Two world premieres, including Dorff's clarinet concerto written for SDSO principal clarinet Christopher Hill and Bernstein's beloved Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

Schubert's profound Symphony No. 9 "The Great C Major" waited for a decade after the composer's death for its professional premiere.  Known for her virtuosity, lyricism, and power, Joyce Yang plays Rachmaninoff's formidable Piano Concerto No. 2.

An Evening of Poetry through Music: Mahler Symphony No. 4 / Mozart Symphony No. 29 and “Exsultate, jubilate”

Bookended by compelling symphonies from classical masters Mozart and Haydn, this concert also features Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw's "Entr'acte", a world premiere by Thomas Parente, and SDSO's own principal oboist Jeffrey Paul takes the stage for Vivaldi's Oboe Concerto.

Join the SDSO for a star-spangled salute, opening the night with the Presentation of Colors by the Ellsworth Air Force Base Color Guard.  Featuring music of John Williams, Aaron Copland, and a commemoration of South Dakota’s military men and women including songs from the branches of the Armed Forces.  Darrel Fickbohm will feature stories of South Dakota veterans punctuated by the music.  Matched with the vocal power of soprano Andrea Ross, non-stop chills await.  The South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra will also join their professional counterparts for a special side-by-side experience.

Celebrate America!

One of the most original and interesting performers on today's classical music scene, pianist Emanuele Arciuli returns for this performance of Lou Harrison's colorful Piano Concerto, inspired by the Indonesian gamelan.  You'll then be taken away by the storytelling of "Scheherazade".

One of the most famous symphonies of all time, Beethoven's 5th opens the season.  Jessie Montgomery's "Banner," a rhapsody of the Star Spangled Banner and Adolphus Hailstork's engaging Symphony No. 3 are on the first half of this dynamic program.

Niloufar Iravani  /Commissioned by the League of American Orchestras with the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation, World Premiere by the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra.
Beethoven’s glorious Symphony No. 9 and the famous “Ode to Joy” is a call for the triumph of universal brotherhood over desperation.  Delta David Gier pairs this message with Reena Esmail’s “My Sister’s Voice” and a world premiere by Niloufar Iravani.

Joined by the vocal power of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Mozart’s choral masterpiece is paired with the gripping thirteenth century purity of Part’s Stabat Mater.

Shostakovich wrote his massive Symphony No. 7 during the siege of Leningrad.  “Neither savage raids…nor the grim atmosphere of the beleaguered city could hinder the flow.  I worked with an inhuman intensity I have never before reached.”  Dmitri Shostakovich.

Celebrate the year of the Rabbit with Chinese composer Chen Yi’s ‘Ge Xu’.  Vowing to give up composing anything other than film music until Hitler was defeated, Korngold’s ‘Violin Concerto’ was that first such piece after the end of WWII.  Hear Minnesota Orchestra Assistant Concertmaster Rui Du bring it to life.

Featuring the inspiring Hallelujah Chorus, Handel’s Messiah returns to usher in the holiday season.  Join your South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Chorus at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls for this divine masterpiece!

Conductor Delta David Gier rings in the new year and kicks off our Music Director Search with the lively and colorful Espejos en la Arena by Mexican composer, Arturo Márquez featuring the exceptional Francisco Vila-Haas on cello. The program concludes with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, a mysterious and triumphant masterpiece that explores the composer’s own life experiences.
